Grabs, Gelatinous Cubes, Damage Shields, and Shields that Push

I had a situation in a session where a Gelatinous Cube was trying to grab a player that specialized in damage shields (Dragon Magic Sorcerer). There were two situations where I wasn't clear on what should happen.

First there's an ability that's attached to the Sorcerer's daily called Lightning Breath. This ability creates a shield after the ability's damage which causes people that attack him to be pushed back one square. When a Cube grabs a target with such a shield do they both get pushed one square toward the Cube due to how engulf works, does the Cube get pushed away since he has to grab as part of the description of engulf, or does engulf just negate the push effect?

Another situation is while the grappler is sustaining the grab. The sorcerer has an ability that happens when using Burning Spray that gives him a damage shield for a round. The shield causes anyone who attacks him in melee to receive his strength mod in damage. Since the grappler is holding him, does he take that damage or does sustaining a grab not trigger that effect? Same with Engulf with Cubes, does the damage shield do damage to the Cube while the sorcerer is engulfed?

1) When the cube moves (push is a move), it pulls with it any creature grabbed by it, and the creature remains grabbed and within the cube’s space.

2) No damage unless there's an attack as part of the Sustaining process that can hit.
Thank you for the reply, Plaguescarred.

Well, what I was really asking about was while the cube is in the process of grabbing. If the cube grabs at a person with this shield on and successfully hits would it knock back before the player gets engulfed?

2) No damage unless there's an attack as part of the Sustaining process that can hit.

So in the case of a normal player they wouldn't receive the damage but with a cube, since it has an attack that goes off every round (10 acid damage), the cube would receive the damage of the shield?
The push resolves as a Reaction. So they are grabbed+Engulfed, then the push happens.

No, "attack" means "rolls a d20." Not "Does damage" or "Sutains an effect." If you use a power that has a Target: line or roll a d20 and check it against a defense, you are attacking. If you don't, you aren't. And "using" a power only counts when you take an action to use it. So sustaining a grab isn't taking an action to use a power and the damage involved is automatic, not part of an attack, so the cube is not attacking them.
