Gloom Surgeon

Now I've never been to a big tourney, but my LGS consists of players who top 40 consistantly at said tourneys. This card has been smashing aggro decks for me. Why is it still considerred ****?

Even the flavor text is winning

What archetype are you using it for?

I suppose it's not terrible as a blocker/swinger against aggro decks. But it is a very, very limited indestructibility, and is vulnerable to Olivia Voldaren/Electrickery (should it need to be played)/any removal--while nice to have on Turn 2 against an aggro deck, it becomes irrelevant in the late-game (beyond turn 4, or so) I think Knight of Infamy or Blood Artist (depending on matchup) is a safer bet in general. Both are relevant as topdecks, unlike the Surgeon.

It need flying or vigilance or deathtouch to be a playable card, which I don't think would be a stretch given its rarity. Deathtouch would fit its flavor perfectly, while narrowly avoiding the "no deathtouch + indestructible creatures" mantra that I believe WotC follows. Oh well. It's a miss.

Because it's a bad Fog Bank

I currently run it in my esper spirits build and it's doing wonders. My deck is allowing his vulnerability to removal to be irrelevant (via Drogskol Captain and negates) and he really just thrashes decks trying to race me.

@Wynzer: Fog bank doesn't deal damage.

I know he's not nutty good, but he's great at not losing the race.

Saying this card is good because it's not bad doesn't make it good.

2 is a very relevant power on a creature that doesn't die in combat. Bumpinthenight.dec doesn't stand a chance against it if two hit, unless they've got a removal heavy hand, in which case they're losing anyways. And it smokes silverblade paladin, precinct, and elite inquis. Can eat thragtusk hits post board wipe, it's just really versatile.

Dies to removal. Need I say more?

Sweepers deal with all of the cards you suggest it's good against as well. Why not just play those?

Also, there's little that doesn't die to removal. I don't see where that's a valid point

I suppose if you are playing esper it is not a bad alternative to Centaur Healer/Thragtusk for dealing with dirty red/etc (not that it compares).

Gloom Surgeon

I would only use it with Laboratory Maniac... otherwise I do take it like the others. A worst Fog Bank and Spirit Mantle.

Sometimes one has to admit the Johnnyness :D

It's really not a worse Fog Bank... Gloom Surgeon threatens to kill early attackers, while the Bank just sits there and mitigates damage. If aggro was playing low-drop evasion creatures than it would be different, but if I had a choice between boarding in Surgeon or Bank vs. a RDW or other aggro deck then I would likely pick the Surgeon.

That and picking away at your library is irrelevant in an aggro matchup.

I ca see it as a decent sideboard card in unburial rites decks.  Basically it wants a deck that needs protection and wants to mill itself.

It Exiles, so it does nothing for the self-mill/reanimator builds.
"I have existed from the morning of the world and I shall exist until the last star falls from the night. Although I have taken the form of Gaius Caligula, I am all men as I am no man and therefore I am a God."
I can see it assideboard tech against aggro decks, but I wouldn't main deck it and a sweeper is better if the aggro player drops his hand on the table.

Think aggro vs aggro match-ups.

I think he would see play of he was just one black mana.

Oh god, if he cost 1 black. That would make 4 1-drop black dudes in standard. MONO BLACK SLIGH

I think he'd be too powerful for B.
