Your caravel was sailing in high sea when a violent storm erupted and teared your vessel apart and sinked it with the entire crew. You washed up on the beach of a tropical island blown by a hurricane. Running for cover you stayed hidden until it passed. The sky is still dark with clouds in the morning when the calm returns, finding the beach full of debris and bodies. Some may still be alive and there might be food and weapons among the debris. Stuck on the island with no way of leaving it, you will need to search the debris for ressources if you want to have any chance of surviving...

1-4E play style
The 4E play style is a high action cinematic style of play where characters worry less about being killed in one hit and more about strategy and what their next move is and the one after it. The players talk back and forth about planning a battle and who can do what to influence the outcome. 4E play is filled with cinematic over the top action. An Eladrin teleports out of the grip of the Ogre. The Fighter slams the dragons foot with his hammer causing it to rear up and stagger back in pain. The Cleric creates a holy zone where their allies weapons are guided to their targets and whenever an enemy dies the Clerics allies are healed. 4E is about knowing when to lauch your nova attack, whether its a huge arcane spell that causes enemies to whirl around in a chaotic storm, or if its a trained adrenaline surge that causes you to attack many many times with two weapons on a single target, or a surge of adrenaline that keeps you going though you should already be dead. Its about tactics and the inability to carry around a bag of potions or a few wands and never have to worry about healing. Its about the guy that can barely role play having the same chance to convince the king to aid the group as the guy that takes improv acting classes and regularly stars as an extra on movies.
Stormwind Fallacy
The Stormwind Fallacy, aka the Roleplayer vs Rollplayer Fallacy Just because one optimizes his characters mechanically does not mean that they cannot also roleplay, and vice versa. Corollary: Doing one in a game does not preclude, nor infringe upon, the ability to do the other in the same game. Generalization 1: One is not automatically a worse role player if he optimizes, and vice versa. Generalization 2: A non-optimized character is not automatically role played better than an optimized one, and vice versa. ...[aside]... Proof: These two elements rely on different aspects of a player's game play. Optimization factors in to how well one understands the rules and handles synergies to produce a very effective end result. Role playing deals with how well a player can act in character and behave as if he was someone else. A person can act while understanding the rules, and can build something powerful while still handling an effective character. There is nothing in the game -- mechanical or otherwise -- restricting one if you participate in the other. Claiming that an optimizer cannot role play (or is participating in a play style that isn't supportive of role playing) because he is an optimizer, or vice versa, is committing the Stormwind Fallacy.

How much in depth do you go with your games? Like 33% combat, 33% exploration, 33% social? Do you have any house rules or optional rules that we should be aware of? Do you want a detailed character background or should we make 2-3 extra characters 'just in case'?Smile

I like a  good mix of everything in general thought we might not see as much social this time around. It will not be a hard balance stress test though, especially considering the monsters are't fixed yet. So it will be more a casual playtest session to check how things flows in general, class feels etc..and have fun kicking stuff around. (Or get kicked by some :P)

I also wanted to give people without playtest group the opportunity to try out the latest D&D Next packet if they want to. Hopefully we will get more players!

Additionally my brother would like to play as a former guild enforcer for the same guild for which I was a doctor. We left on friendly terms and may return (more like are expected to return) in the future. His Axe oft gets him in trouble as it boosts his already overwhelming confidence...

I'll get him to add you if you approve.

Will do, I just finished making a lvl 1 version I will level her up and post a summary as soon as it is finished.
I'm interested, though I haven't got a microphone. I type pretty quickly, though. Is that 23:45 Daylight Saving Time, or not?

Character idea: Hierarch Sullomus (Human Priest Protector Cleric), a priest of Menoth the Wall-builder, who, given access to the virgin land and primitive peoples of the Isle of Dread, seeks to emulate the great Menite priest-kings of old.
@faer4 - Unfortunatly, i ask players to have a microphone to play sorry. If you can get yourself one let me know and i will gladly take you onboard if i still have room.

Question is the gear starting gear + 100g + 1 magic item, or just 100g + 1 magic item?   The default is 150g or 175g for lvl 1 character depending on rather you read the background document or the character creation document.
@Philip - Oops I made a mistake its 150 gp + 1 magic item, not 100 gp. I corrected the OP. You have to buy starting gear.

Background

Turnip grew up in the small halfling town of Potsticker.  Her curiosity and resourcefulness drew her to tinkering and eventually trapsmithing to ward off potential threats that she had read about in story books.  When few such threats presented themselves, she decided that she would present herself to them and she set out to become an adventurer.

Turnip is the ripe age of 19 years old.  She is a packrat that carries many of her tools and gadgets in her little cart she drags behind her.  She is a little know-it-all who proudly displays her trapsmithing certifications and guild membership to both willing and unwilling ears.

@Philip - Thanks for the Summary. Cool art ! As for the equipment im fine with them.

no, he doesn't have a forum name.
I just took the default packages. The gp cost of the items that were listed fell well below 150gp. Things like the horse and associated gear aren't listed with prices in the packet. So mainly I'm guesstimating. I need to pick a magic item though. I forgot about that...Smile

I'm new to Google+, how exactly does it work? Should I set it up before hand?

Dreaming the Impossible Dream
Imagine a world where the first-time D&D player rolls stats, picks a race, picks a class, picks an alignment, and buys gear to create a character. Imagine if an experienced player, maybe the person helping our theoretical player learn the ropes, could also make a character by rolling ability scores and picking a race, class, feat, skills, class features, spells or powers, and so on. Those two players used different paths to build characters, but the system design allows them to play at the same table. -Mearl
