The possible implications for MTG if Disney buys Hasbro

It's late and I'm tired, but could a move like this have an effect on Magic?  On one hand, Disney could let WotC go about its business undisturbed.  On the other, it could mean an almost rigidly family-friendly ethos, and a drive to make things super-profitable.  In the long run, this could result in the game getting dumbed down in the name of broader appeal.

Of course, the two previous scenarios are the two extremes.  There is a lot of space between them.

It's so cliche. Everybody thinks that once Disney buys something they make it family friendly. It's like the lol mickey mouse in star wars crap. There is literally no reason for Disney to do this. Disney has the family entertainment on lockdown so why buy a bunch of other companies and convert them to family entertainment? Disney is buying a ton of huge companies that make a lot of money so they can make more money. Has Marvel become a family friendly product since they've been acquired?

Wizards already makes Kaijudo which is the kid's version of magic. I doubt much changes after Disney buys Hasbro. If Disney owns the a ton of property like say, Star Wars and Wizards which is allowed to create Star Wars related gaming content...

Buying a successful company isn't about driving it into the ground. Disney may be evil but they own everything not because of bad business.
Go see Wreck-It Ralph. Then we can talk about how Disney "ruins everything." (I mean, you'll be wrong, but we can still talk about it )

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

Still better than Gleemax.

Btw, glad to see you still sporting that title.
They could go either way. But Disney is usually rather good about not forcing family friendly stuff on successful businesses they acquire. Disney owns Marvel but Marvel sure has not been toned down any time soon.

It could definetly mean price increases and such, though.
Humm... doesnt disney own an horror movie compagny and they dont advertize it much... You know going to see an horror movie with gore isnt good for the family image of Disney....

I could be wrong on this one, it's something I was told quite a while ago and I had never verified it, but the person that told that to me is rather reliable, so I'm just putting it out there, someone might know more about it.

Not sure about a horror movie company but they do own Touchstone Pictures which produced movies like Dark Water and the new Fright Night.

Except it wasn't terrible. They had a chance to do what you're implying and just parade reference-after-reference but instead they decide to actually create a good movie! It is mind-boggling.

Well yes, the advertising is obviously pandering. The movie itself doesn't really make a big deal about the references. Don't know if you've seen it, but there was never a point where they sacrificed plot so they could get in an extra reference.

No. The first Iron Man predates the Disney purchase, and was the best marvel movie until Avengers. The basic plan for Avengers was laid out after Iron Man's success. The change was Marvel having more control over the movies. See the 90's Fantastic Four for why this is a good thing.

My point was more Disney not interfering, but ya, kudos to the status quo.

First of all, everything bad that Disney could do for Magic like a lower skill cap, diluted value on packs, less focus on game balance and cuts to the competitive scene has already happened. I don't see how they could make it even worse except for judging Magic too small of a business and simply shutting it down.

I don't have any problem if Disney actually lets WotC do their stuff alone ala Touchstone Pictures and arguably with less pressure on the quarterly report than Hasbro. That said, all the advocates should admit that whatever Disney directly puts their hands is set on a pretty low common denominator by default. Just see Adam Carter, Narnia chronicles or Tron: Legacy to put a few examples.

They could go either way. But Disney is usually rather good about not forcing family friendly stuff on successful businesses they acquire. Disney owns Marvel but Marvel sure has not been toned down any time soon.

I don't know how recent the acquisition was but Marvel has been doing pretty bad these days. I was an X-Men fan back in the day but I have lost faith in the series as of late. The Avengers vs X-Men saga was godawful and there's a common feeling on disappointment on the entire company in the comic forums. Some Marvel diehard fans have been switching to DC as of late.
If Limited gets in the way of printing good Constructed cards... Screw limited

In all honesty, if Magic got the boot, we'd all die on the inside. But if Disney bought out Hasbro, and kept MTG, DnD and whatever other games alive- We'd probably see very little change, aside from a Planeswalker Duck.
Always right, 102% of the time.
Doesn't Disney own Miramax, though?

Disney's biggest problem is that their movies tend to screw up history. That, and once anything's successful, they buy the rights to it, make an inferior remake, and make sure you don't get to see the original.

So that the movie studio could retain the rights it had held since the classic superman movies. Other movies get rushed to retain rights. X-men 3 could have waited until more of the cast was avilable. The first 2000's FF was rushed. The second has no such excuse. This Summers Spiderman only happened becuase they couldn't hold the rights long enough to have the actors back for spiderman 4. That was actually a good thing.

Is MTG and D&D such a big franchase that it would cause the mouse to buy Hasbro? I understand buying Marvel comics cause the movies are making serious buckroos and of course Lucasarts with it's expanded galaxy and movie rights but Hasbro and it's not like they are going to 6 more transformers movies.

Don't think this is a good invest by Disney if they do it, they would be better off buying Square Enix (which whom they have partnered with in the past)
