This thread is for discussion of magicthegathering.com's Magic Arcana, Card of the Day, and Daily Decks features for the month of November, 2012.
Cancel may be the standard "counter target spell" option, but that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't get used.  Particularly when something strictly better such as Dissipate is available.

Standard Pauper! (play it on MTGO)
Just a small factual correction for today's Jedit Ojanen description: Jedit was an uncommon card in Legends, not a common. Legends itself didn't have any common gold cards. Still a great character who I hope will someday get an updated W/U version as well, not just his green alternate ego.
If the Simic Guild Symbol was intentional, there should have been a few more bubbles on the right side. The way it is now, it really just looks like a curve, not a tree.

I couldn't tell from what but that Dispel art did feel Simic to me

For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

The Magic Arcana has a problem, only two decks are shown and the simic deck is replaced with the Dimir deck.
Actually,  Archon of the Triumvirate is not the first multi-colored Archon. Krond the Dawn-Clad from Planechase was technically the first.
I'm glad the Izzet guildmage got such better art, but Rakdos wins best art on a guildmage, because both of their mages have their hands on fire.
I'm still severely dissapointed there arnt any cards from Return to Ravnica!

Aslo the dissapointing use of delibrtly more expensive cards or less versitle cards like Faith's Fetters over Arrest or forced worship

Or the personally dissapointing use of Assault strobe rather than double cleave.

I use red a lot, but it's like the Izzit deck of the last update; I am severely dissapointed as to the choice of cards rather than more powerful counter parts.  (Arc Lightning over Arc Trail, ect.)

I dont know how they determin what card go in a deck, but card like my suggestions are obvious choices over the ones they have chosen and they dont even cost any more in actual monitary value.

The Axebane Stag actually seems significantly smaller in the final art than it did in the second sketch. I guess, looking at the column, that it's still supposed to be really big, but it just doesn't look it. Maybe it's the viaduct/wall lurking in the background, or maybe it's the tree to the left hanging over it, but it just doesn't seem as large.

Come join me at No Goblins Allowed

Because frankly, being here depresses me these days.

Yeah, the first time I saw the card, I assumed it was just a vanilla 2/3. I had to do a double take when I realised the truth.

Really? This is bigger than Craterhoof Behemoth? I mean, I know the Behemoth can grow, but it's still incredibly jarring.
I feel like the last sketch got it right but the artist failed to recapture the important details that made the stag look tough. Notice for example the stag's head in the sketch vs. the final art; It's looks much more primordial and beastly.
I think this week's Card of the Day theme is to do with Julius Caesar. He was a general, a praetor and a member of the First Triumvirate. He was also famously assassinated. I can't quite pinpoint how Arcanis the Omnipotent fits with Caesar, but the other four seem to resonate well enough with him for me to think that he is the theme.
It's nice that the artist sent in an adjusted sketch to make Axebane Stag bigger than the first sketch, but this creature still doesn't visually represent a 6/7 creature very well. Most dragons in magic are 5/5 or 6/6, and this stag doesn't look like he'd survive any fight with a dragon...

Until I saw the enlarged art, I never realized Axebane Stag was actually armored.  I agree, the art doesn't really show that it's a 2/2, 3/3, or 9/9.  It just looks like a big elk.  Needs some birds to show scale.  ;)

Yea, I think the Creative and Artwork teams dropped the ball with Axebane Stag. It's an Elk. I don't care how thick its skin is or how horny its horns are -- it just doesn't feel tougher than Roar of the Wurm tokens! Maybe "Axebane" was supposed to mean "insanely magically powerful," but if so then they shouldn't have put the name "Axebane" on one other creature, Axebane Guardian, and make that creature an 0/3!
I agree with above sentiments.  Whoever thought this card was a good example of drawing a huge creature must have been celebrating the passing of recent ballot measures in Washington and Colorado.

Dragon's Maze, huh?

Looks like the ever popular Niv-Mizzet's playing a big role in the 3rd set. Unless maybe it has something to do with all the new dragons in Ravnica but I don't see that happening.
All those Selsnya flavour texts talking about "preparing for the Izzet's madness" or somesch always struck me as a pretty desperate attempt at flavouring before, but now? Who knows?
Ral Zarek! Welcome to paper Magic.
Nicol Bolas and Niv Mizzet maybe?

And is that the red blue planeswalker as art at the bottom?
You are Red/Blue!
You are Red/Blue!

"Dragon's Maze"? Dafuq? I hope there is something really big in the Ravnica plot that accounts for such an underwhelming set name. Like Ravnica becoming the Dragon's (Niv-Mizzet's) Maze, with all its citizens and guilds mere players. Card of the Day being good ole' Dracogenius hinting at this? Can't be a coincidence.

Niv Mizzet/UR Planeswalker maybe? One can hope. With Vraska being a guild-affiliated 'walker I can see at least one in each set.

Set Symbol is just a conglomeration of RTR and GTC symbols--I guess symbolizing that guilds from both sets are combined within DGM set.

@above: Doesn't really look like planeswalker-grade art--not very flashy. I wouldn't be surprised if it was, though. Kinda looks like unshaven Jace, Architect of Thought who laid off a bunch of emotional baggage and realized is the coolest color, though that might be a stretch.
Standard Pauper! (play it on MTGO)
Clearly Ral Zarek in the pic, which seems to confirm our first UR PW (promo pic is not PW pic, but always shows the set's PW these days). Nice. 'Ten guilds, one destination'... curious. What has ol' Nivvy been up to? Is the whole of Ravnica going somewhere?
I wonder if we are going to see Quests come back for this set...

They had better have some sort of nephilim homage in the set.
Besides after Gatecrash shows us the rest of the guilds Dragon's Maze needs to have some sort of gimmick. Really 4 color combinations is the only thing a multicolor set hasn't focused on so I wouldn't be suprised if it were at least a subtheme.

Well, I wouldn't bet any money on it, but I could definitely see a four color subtheme happening. The Nephilim were already a part of the original Ravnica block and Niv Mizzet's plan could certainly involve them in some way. Although I didn’t pay much attention to the background story back then, so I don’t know how much they would need to twist things around. I don't think it will be a major theme though, because the third set is a small one and it also needs to support all 10 guilds, at least to some degree.

In general though I think that Ravnica would be an interesting setting to make a four color theme work. You could make each four color pair a team-up of two guilds (not sharing a color) although the guilds would probably need some kind of incentive to go for such a team up, and I haven't seen anything setting this up (yet). So I don't think this will happen this time around. Of course this is only one option, just to give some flavor to four colors within the Ravnica setting.

I hate announcements that contain no information.
Liliana of the Veil.
Sorin, Lord of Innistrad.

That is definitely our Planeswalker for the set, and also probably (because Wizards xP) the ''official'' art as seen on the card...will not be as cool :P

I like this image because it Red + Blue + City makes me think of Spider-Man :3 I realize this is almost completely irrational a connection to make, but seeing Ral Zarek web-swing....err, whatever the heck that arm-band thingy is? through Ravnica's skyscape to battle the Scientist-Lizard/Dragon.....come on! Movie deal, Yes? :D

:P OK, that would just be silly.

Anyways, because it's Magic, because Maze of Ith was in From the Vault, and because it says "Dragon's Something", I am going to fill the role of Paranoid Person and assume Nicol Bolas is up to something. The rest of you can and will worry about Niv-Mizzet. The consequences of Bolas being up to something and NOT catching it far outweigh the consequences of someone else being up to something and assuming Nicol Bolas did it. If I'm ready for Bolas, then Niv-Mizzet is no threat.
I wonder if we are going to see Quests come back for this set...

I don't know about 'this set' or not, but Quests are definitely something that could come back, being fittable into nearly any kind of block with some sort of 'plot'.

I'd also like to point out that MaRo mentioned Convoke, Bloodthirst, Replicate, and Graft as being the only Guild Keywords he thinks are 'likely' to come back sometime in the vaporous 'future'. What scares/excites me most is that he didn't say FLAT. NO. to Dredge coming back.  Highly unlikely of course, but why not just SAY no?

Unless he wants us to think 'Unlikely' means 'no', while at the same time being able to change his mind about, say, Forecast or Transmute (tamer abilities that the main reason they won't come back is current WOTC philosophy, not like Hellbent which probably is plumbed as a mechanic, or Haunt which I do think is too complicated to be worth it, but ''simplified Haunt'' would be cool)
