[Modern Masters]

Modern Masters set explained as a limited product with the intent of giving players cards necessary to play in modern. $6.99 MSRP per pack. 24 packs per box. It has the same rarity break down as M13 and other core sets. The packs can be drafted.

First card previewed on protour stream:
It's Master's Edition, escaped into the paper world!

It's a non-standard, reprint-only, high-powered set that's draftable!
As someone who left Magic just before the Modern perview and only came back to it a couple of years ago, colour me excited.

I missed the announcement; any idea given as to just HOW limited this product will be? (i.e. What are the odds of packs being sold at 3 times their MSRP - looking at you FTV series.)
Goyf is mythic?

=[

When is this out?

Fantastic Idea making modern cards more accessable, it's never fun being priced out of a format.

anyone else thinking how win/win this is? Wizards benefits from the fact that these will sell themselves, players benefit from the eventual lowering of modern entry it will create. Goyf may drop below 60 or 70 for the first time in years.

i can't wait for this my buddy is already complaining about the price of cards dropping when i told him that they said they were going to reprint modern staples and i hope that it will make modern more playable
Sounds fun. Hoping I'll be able to draft it a couple times.
Probably a Confidant in there too, which works quite well for my purposes.  Then again, seven bucks per pack is a bit...expensive.

This will be a retarded good draft format. Unfortunately it's limited print run so save your pennies and buy cases of this so you can hoard it.
Is there a release date yet?

Announced during pro tour coverage by Forscythe. It will be released after Sinker and before the next core set in June of 2013
Note to self...buy a lot of this.  Seriously, what a cool idea.  I've been trying to get into Modern for a while now.  I also assume that this won't be for sale at Target, Wal-Mart ect.  Also, I wonder if the price for a box of this will be the same as a 36-pack box from a normal set.  If so, will we be able to preorder it for $90?  I know he said there will be no official prerelease.

Definitely a cool idea.  My speculatory gears are turning...

I think it's an interesting concept. It seems they really want to push modern (you can tell seeing every pro even has a modern portion now) and this is a good way to do it. However, I have reservations by it being labeled as a limited print run product. I think that's them trying to save themselves if it fails beause there is huge competition with Legacy. I also think Forsythe talking about how they don't want this product to get into the hands of the average Magic player to be a cop out too. Obviously new and bad players are greatly effected by the power level of cards in their play group so one person buying a large amount of "good" product would be "unfair". Obviously this stuff isn't beginner material but I don't like how it's supposed to be all about the casual player.
too bad nobody plays modern here because they suck
Limited print run?  Hello $15 boosters....

A new set of reprints wouldn't make that any more "unfair" than it already is.  The players with more money can do exactly that right now.
Hmm, I wonder if they'd want to reprint the five swords of Mirrodin?

Wow! Skimming through the Banned List I noticed that every single deck of mine is forbidden in this format... o_O

I'm still looking forward to seeing many tasty reprints.

I suspect Noble Heirarch will make an appearance after how many people were upset about it not being in M13.

I think Kird Ape may make an appearance though I'm holding out hope that it gets reprinted in Gatecrash (leave me with my delusions!).

I can't think of anything else off the top of my head tha hasn't already been covered...

Also; Chrome Mox, Golgari Grave-Troll and Umezawa's Jitte are all banned in Modern so won't be making the cut.

I think you're misuderstanding the purpose of the product.  The sole purpose of this product is to reprint Modern staples as to lower the barrier of entry to the format.  They are not going to reprint currently non-Modern-legal cards for the purposes of making them Modern legal.

posts showing how little people know about modern which justifies the existence of this product.
So if these are draftable packs, does that mean only a third of the cards in the set, and only one card in each pack, will be cards people actually have a hard time finding?  Logically, all of the most expensive rare and mythic cards will continue to be rare and mythic in this set, and I'm presuming there will be only one rare per pack (and possibly a foil rare).
Vivid lands (for Reflecting Pool) and Prismatic Omen strike me as options.

I was initially thinking of the Vivid lands, but then they struck me as too slow for the format.

Also, it occurred to me that this set could do more harm than good.  While I'll be happy to get some much needed Modern ammo, the set also sends the message: "Play these cards in Modern."  I can see it making the format more homogeneous than it already is.

fair enough i always seem to forget that onslaught isnt legal in modern
Personally I'm a little disappointed that they HAD to bring this Limited mentality to the product and the format. I'm happy about having staples reprinted anyway, but cracking $7 a pack in order to have the little chance of opening a mythic Goyf isn't exactly appealing, especially considering the bunch of GILBIC commons that will be tossed out just to have a limited format. I guess the quality of the gold rares is going to determine whether I acquire the product or not. If we see Zendikar fetchlands or Stuff like Crucible of Worlds and Life from Loam, sure. If they pretend that stuff that has seen play once like Spellbreaker Behemoth or Avenger of Zendikar deserve our attention, the product deserve to gather dust unsold.
If Limited gets in the way of printing good Constructed cards... Screw limited
Complaining about a set based on one spoiled card?
That's got to be a new record.

The way they're describing this format, it sounds more like a cube draft than anything and those tend to be, technically speaking, the nuts.

I'm not thrilled about the price tag either, but I have to believe that WotC knows what they're doing while also acknowledging it's virgin territory.  I'm not sure how you'd rather them go about it.  Personally, I think it sounds like an awesome Limited idea, one that we probably won't see again.  There are plenty of commons and uncommons to make it worth it.  I'm actually kind of pumped at the prospect of new art for Disenchant.

Tarmogoyf is most definitely a Modern staple, and I hope that it's an indicator of this set's quality.  I love the idea, while remaining cautiously optimistic that it doesn't force the format into a worse state of homogeneity.

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).
