How does Experience Points work for Prestige Classes.

Pretty much the title says it call. Our DM is using the SRD for experience points but no one in our group knows what will happen when we do prestige.
We are unsure if we go back to the bottom of the experience charts or do we just continue where our character's are at.

An example of what i mean is I am a rogue and i want to prestige into shadowdancer at level 7. Does that mean i have to get the exp needed to go to level 8 or the exp to go to level 2.
A character only has one "level" although the things that into that level may vary.  As a character advances (earns XP) he unlocks new potential which we see as class levels.

If you want to add Shadowdancer levels to your PC you'd do it just like if you added another level of Rogue except you getting things from a new class.  Generally, you're going to need the XP to become 8th-level before you can select to add a level of Shadowdancer to the character.
In addition to StevenO's answer, I'd look up the difference between "character level" and "class level".

Your class level is the level  which you have attained in a given class. Barring corner cases (monsters, powerful races, etc), your character level is the sum of your class levels. Rogue 8 / Shadowdancer 1 is a 9th level character, for instance.

You use your character level on those XP tables. That's all. When you gain a level, you choose which class level to advance.

This also works for multiclassing in general (i.e. Rogue 8 / Fighter 1), in addition to prestige classing.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

You stay on the chart for the XP needed for level 7

The chart is your Character level not your class level, and can be any combination fo class level. Thus a level 6 Rogue/level 1 Shadowdancer has an effective character level of level 7

your gain exp based in your ECL that in this case is the add of all your class as example a character rouge lv 6 shadowdancer lv 4 have a ECL 10 therefore he have the exp of a lv 10 character and can put a maximum of 13 ranks in her class skills and need the same exp that a barbarian lv 10 to lv up.

It's basically the same as multiclassing except without the xp penalty... If you don't know about multiclassing, see the multiclassing section on page 59 of the PHB and the introduction to multiclassing on page 176 of the DMG... That should answer your question...
