Monomania: Ætheritum Shapeshifter

Ætheritum Shapeshifter
Creature - Shapeshifter
As Ætheritum Shapeshifter enters the battlefield, name a creature card with converted mana cost 3 or less.  Ætheritum Shapeshifter enters the battlefield as a copy of that creature card.
0/0

Oh snap, Mono is off his rocker.  The most important note on this would probably be that you can only name something legal in the format you're playing in (sorry, no Tarmogoyf in Standard).  There are likely a ton of other issues with this, but it's just so darn cool.  I also have no idea of this mana cost makes sense.  The blue is there because copying stuff is blue's thing, while the creature variety stems from green, but it's pretty much a crapshoot.  I think 4 mana with 3 colored mana symbols is the right number, though, since 5 mana is a lot to pay on something that normally costs 3 at best.

Alright, feel free to call me crazy now.  It's okay, I'm already expecting it.

(You can't name a card that isn't legal in the format you are playing)

Problem solved.
So it'd be a new rule since Meddling Mage doesn't have that restriction?

The cost seems fine; Living Wish + three mana for the creature. It's just memory issues.
That's pretty cute. I favor this more than most other shifters I've seen on here.

In standard, this would be a 5/6 flier for four with no drawbacks. Seems a bit too good.
Won a TPmanW contest with Demonic Arbitrator. (see below) My username is a simple continued fraction. Look it up. My favorite cards I've made:
Show
Æther Rider Creatuere - Spirit (U) Vanishing 0 (This permanent enters the battlefield with zero time counters on it. At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter from it. When the last is removed, sacrifice it.) Flying : Put a time counter on ~. Any player may activate this ability. It comes on the wind, from realms unknown. 2/2 Kaldurian Behemoth Creature - Beast (R) Mana produced by lands may not be used to pay ~'s mana cost. Trample On Kalduria, the beasts are too good to eat common grass. 10/10 Demonic Arbitrator Sorcery Starting with you, each player may pay any amount of life. If any player paid life, repeat this process. If a player paid more life in total than any other, that player searches his or her library for a card and puts that card into his or her hand. Then that player shuffles his or her library. "Your sacrifice has been judged worthy. What power do you require?"
In Modern, it could also be an unkillable threat that deals or heals 2 every time it regenerates, or a combo tutor. Considering the fact that it can also turn into any number of awesome utility creatures from throughout the format, and that cards like Splinter Twin turn it into an instant win, you have a ridiculous powerhouse on your hands.

The restriction is so sketchy. How does it work in limited? What if we don't have a copy of the card at hand? Memory issues galore...
The Living Wish comparison is not appropriate, because the wish is limited to your sideboard, while this is limited by the format, and being able to draw from a much larger pool (and not being restricted by colour) can offer immense versatility.
I favour Razor's suggestion.
Nothing really matters.
Anyone can see.
You're not searching your sideboard, you're not searching an opponent's library, you're spending 20-30 minutes going through lists of hundreds or thousands of cards!

So, you're the kind of person that loves doing that? Here's another version that's just for you:

Ætheritum Shapeshifter -
Creature - Shapeshifter
At the beginning of each upkeep, name a creature card with converted mana cost 3 or less.  Ætheritum Shapeshifter becomes a copy of that creature card and then gains this ability.
0/3
It does concern me a little that the most similar card I can think of is Richard Garfield, PhD.
The rule about naming a card not legal in your format is not new. Any card that says "name a card" already comes with that restriction (I learned this when I cast Spoils of the Vault naming Black Lotus in a Legacy tournament).
Etiamnunc sto, etiamsi caelum ruat.

I don't know if that is true, but if it is it must be fairly recent, and I have an amusing anecdote to prove it.

About two years ago, I was drafting Time Spiral block on MODO, and in game 1 of round 2 I killed my opponent with a Fledgling Mawcor. In game two, after I play a morph, my opponent casts a Voidstone Gargoyle. He must've only vaguely remembered the card I played because the one he named was... Mawcor. He seemed very annoyed when I turned my Fledgling Mawcor up, and proceeded to ping him a new one.

It might be just MODO, and maybe they've changed even that now, but whenever you are asked to name a card, I remember it has a drop down menu with ALL cards on it.
Nothing really matters.
Anyone can see.
I get the comparison to Green Sun's Zenith, but zenith is more flexible.  It can get a Dryad Arbor on turn 1, a 1-drop the next turn, a 2-drop the next, and beyong 4 mana, it can get more expensive stuff.  Also, there is the fact that it costs a ton of colored mana.  My card is, however, admittedly very good.

It is pretty obvious that memory issues are the most problematic aspect of this.  I surmise that in draft, with the appropriate ruling would that it could only name cards in packs that were actually opened.

On another note, I'm shocked that nobody has called me insane yet.

I wasn't gonna call you insane but then you said that thing about Draft. you won't even know 84 of those cards.

Uh, no, don't worry, it was just me phrasing my wording poorly.  I mean cards from the sets your drafting, as in you can't choose Snapcaster Mage if you were drafting Zendikar.

Moriok Rigger is not a Rigger in print. Only in Errata WHAT NOW! (yes, I did put that phrase in for that exact reason)
Congratulations, they have activated your trap card!

120.6. Some effects replace card draws.
what he originally said was kinda logically sound but doesn't make much sense.

Which would be a double negative, indicating you could only choose Snapcaster Mage if you were drafting Zendikar. This may have been his intention, but it would place him back in the crazy pile.

oh yeah Zendikar isn't Innistrad.

that is logically unsound : P
can't choose mage if you weren't drafting zen != can choose mage if you were.

Oh yea. Brain fart.

I am full of miswordings.
You can only choose Snapcaster if you're drafting Innistrad at all.  I don't know why I put down Zendikar.
