You're own mechanic

If you can come up with your own MTG card mechanic, what would it be called and what effect does it bring? Does it align to only a few of the colors? Does it align with only a few creatures? Is it similar to a pr-existing mechanic? You decide As for me, my mechanic is... Frost (creatures dealt damage by this creature get an Ice counter. A permanent does not untap during their controller's untap step unless their controller pays for each Ice counter on that permanent) It will align strongly with but also and and is for a new creature of Ice Elementals. This ability is solely used to slow down the opponent and will even have non-creature spells that will either move or place down Ice Counters.
I think almost any ability that triggers off of combat damage and merely slows down the opposing creature is going to get compared to Deathtouch and look bad because of the comparison.  Of course in this case I think it fills a different role, because you're almost always going to want to use it on defense rather than offense.  If your Frosty attacker gets blocked, the blocker isn't going to care much because it can just sit there untapped and keep blocking.  If you block an attacker with it though, that probably has more impact.  I'd consider changing it to trigger off of blocking/being blocked rather than off of damage, so it can get used on cheap Defender creatures and distance itself from Deathtouch even more.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

I've been wanting to do an Aura mechanic inspired by Living Weapon, but haven't really found a home for it.

Drake Aspect
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +2/+2 and has flying
Spirit Guide (When enchanted creature dies, if it's not a token, create a 0/0 Spirit creature token and return this Aura from the graveyard to the battlefield attached to it.)

Scorpion Aspect
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +1/+1 and has deathtouch
Spirit Guide (When enchanted creature dies, if it's not a token, create a 0/0 Spirit creature token and return this Aura from the graveyard to the battlefield attached to it.)

Ox Aspect
Enchantment - Aura
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +0/+3 and has defender
Spirit Guide (When enchanted creature dies, if it's not a token, create a 0/0 Spirit creature token and return this Aura from the graveyard to the battlefield attached to it.)
The World of Eldangard - a three act M:tG block by Fallingman Eldangard Stormfront Ragnarok
GUARDIAN (This creature may block multiple attackers. ?It only deals combat damage to one of them?)

The idea for this mechanic would be to showcase a big tough warrior or dragon which fits in the "meatshield" slot for design. The text flanked by question marks is optional, to be kept or removed as necessary to deal with power. This would be primarily a white-green ability, since those are the colors that have to do with teamwork and creatures.
Vengeful [X] (When this creature dies, it deals [X] damage to target creature or player.)

It was used in my first set as a Red/White mechanic.

Matrix: Lose half your life rounded down - X becomes X2.

Own Mechanic

Artifact Creature-Own Artificer
You are Own Mechanic. (Damage dealt to you is dealt to Own Mechanic and vice versa, enchantments and equipment affecting Own Mechanic affect you and vice versa, and if another player gains control of Own Mechanic they gain control of you and vice versa.)
5/5
I came up with a cool "swarm" mechanic (though people suggested I change the name to "surge"), but although it was simple to understand, it took a lot of text to explain. Then again, so does banding :P .

Surge (When ~ enters the battlefield, for each other nontoken creature that shares a type with it, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of it, except it loses Surge. Then put a -1/-1 counter on all creatures that share a type with ~)

A key thing to note is that copy effects don't copy counters, they only copy the properties printed on the card. So let's say I have a Rune-Scarred Demon out. It's a 6/6. I play something with surge, and it creates a copy of Rune-Scarred demon, then puts -1/-1 counters on them both, making them 5/5. If I play something else with Surge, I now have a 5/5 in play as well as two 4/4's. And this can happen as many times until the original card dies from being reduced to 0 toughness, resulting in nothing to be copied next time I try to surge.

The original idea was that it was turning your creatures into a Swarm of small creatures, each wave smaller than the last (for a Plague creature type), but it works for other uses as well.

Before arguing that it's OP, consider that Surge would be an ETB effect, and making the tokens lose Surge prevents ridiculous two-surge combos.

All cards I make have artists credited in the appropriate places. Artist names in "quotes" are DeviantArt usernames unless otherwise mentioned.

"I play a Grave Betrayal. I get all your dead things now, mwahahahaha!"
"Okay. I play a Phage the Untouchable. Piss me off and I will sac it."
"... ... ... so guys, remind me again how to sac my own enchantments?"

Berserk (If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.)

I know its a poor mans indestructible but it has way more flavour and has a lot more design space.

Enraged Troll
Creature - Troll
Berserk (If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.)
If Enraged Troll has been dealt lethal damage this turn it gains trample and gets +3/+0 until end of turn.
3/3

Fresh Recruit
Creature - Human Soldier
Berserk (If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.)
2/1

Bonesnapper
Legendary Creature - Minotaur
Berserk (If this ally would be destroyed it is not until end of turn.)
Whenever Bonesnapper is dealt damage, choose one - target player discards a card at random; target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn; or you gain a life and target player loses a life.

My pet mechanic is Augment. Were it in the Comp Rules, it would be listed something like this (gonna use 97 since that would be the next keyword ability listing):

702.97. Augment

702.97a Augment is a static ability. "Augment N" means "This creature gets +N/+N for each counter on it." "Augment -N" means "This creature gets -N/-N for each counter on it."

702.97b "Augment X" is a special form of augment. "Augment X" means "This creature gets +X/+X for each counter on it, where X is the number of counters on it." "Augment -X" means "This creature gets -X/-X for each counter on it, where X is the number of counters on it."

702.97c If an object has multiple instances of augment, each applies separately.

So, a couple of examples...

Plagueborn Horror
Creature-Carrier Horror
Augment 2
~ enters the battlefield with two -1/-1 counters on it.
0/0

Unseemly Affliction
Instant
As an additional cost to cast ~, remove a -1/-1 counter from a Carrier creature you control.
Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature. Until end of turn, it gains augment -1.

Dispersal Carrier
Creature-Carrier Cleric
Augment X
~ enters the battlefield with three -1/-1 counters on it.
, , Remove a counter from ~: Put a counter of the same kind removed from ~ on each other creature.
-1/-1

Admittedly, most of these are based on an older attempt of mine to make my own set. Originally I used "plague counters" and every creature in the set had some ability that interacted with counters (Augment being the most widespread one), cause at the time Wizards was still sticking to their promise to never use -1/-1 counters again. Now that Shadowmoor and Scars of Mirrodin have both happened...I don't mind using -1/-1 counters instead, which if I revisit an attempt to make the set, will replace a lot of the mechanics.

Technically, this ability could work in all colors, but I think it would be most prominent in colors. With getting almost exclusive use of -N values ( could also get it for -N, but in much smaller quantities).

I, too, wish Wizards would turn mill into a keyword action. Except I'd rather they execute it (using your card's ETB effect as example) as "mills two cards." Attaching an integer to the ability limits the errata of older cards to only those that mill a specified number or X, as opposed to those that don't reference a number, such as Belltower Sphinx or Psychic Spiral.

10/10. Amazing.

"Mills that many cards." Pretty sure people would be able to figure that one out.

If an integer was part of the keyword action (like Scry and Fateseal have), that phrase would be unusable. The best they would be able to do is "Mills X, where X is {value definition}." Which is just as space consuming as what's already written.

I don't see why given that mill would be a keyword action. I mean Echo and Equip normally have a mana cost associated with them, but they don't have to, so I don't see why we couldn't have a theoretical keyword action that follows the mold, but deviates where it needs to.

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.
