Is Niv-Mizzet Trying to Create an Artificial Spark?

So here's my wildly ridiculous idea for the next block.  I remember a recent article (maybe the Planeswalkers Guide to Ravnica) that said that Niv has a bevy of seemingly unrelated projects/experiments going on all at once.  Only Niv knows why they're truly important, and how the pieces fit.  My theory is the he's trying to create an artificial planeswalker spark in order to usurp Nicol Bolas as the Multiverse's eminent planeswalker/knower of all things.

Their epic battle spans multiple planes (Planechase style, perhaps).  Perhaps the first two blocks of the set could deal with the two of them and their effects on multiple planes.  Perhaps other walkers like Gideon, Ajani or Tamiyo are in pursuit, trying to minimize the chaos and casualties.  Then, in the third block, they make it to Zendikar and have to do the (admittedly cliched) "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing and duke it out with the Eldrazi.

This random scenario just popped into my head a few minutes ago, and I wanted to share it.  I now bestow it to the community, for your ridicule.

It's a theory that has already been talked to death.
And is largely seen as without merit.
Here's the thing, the spark isn't as special as it used to be. Know what Niv Mizzet with a spark would be? Niv Mizzet that could hop around the multiverse.

And he doesn't need a spark for that. Niv is smart enough that he could easily construct a planeshifting engine. Niv is very likely an order of magnitude more intelligent than someone like Urza. If Urza could do it, you can almost be damn certain that Niv could.
Niv is so intelligent he understands meta-magic. The actual mathematics of WHY magic works like it does, not just how to perform magic.

But yeah, Niv isn't going to make an artificial spark. It doesn't actually grow the character in any meaningful way.

Bolas, btw, would largely wipe the floor with Niv. Niv is almost without a doubt more intelligent than Bolas, but he doesn't have the same advantages Bolas does in terms of raw power and ruthless cunning.
Bary is right - but if you look at it from a marketing perspective, it seems more plausible. Jace and Niv team up to take on the greatest threat in the Multiverse. Niv is popular, and not just because he is Izzet. I can see him becoming a more-than-just-Ravnica character. For the profits.

Still, even after all that, it seems unlikely. Wizards will probably do something just as lame, but less marketable - because they aren't too good at that side of things. Though, admittedly, they have come a long way.

Being a planeswalker has to add to the character or else, what's the point of making them a planeswalker?

For example, Avacyn could have been a planeswalker (I'm talking on a meta level here), but it wouldn't have added anything to her character. She still needs to remain on Innistrad. Her being a planeswalker is wasted.

Why does Niv need to be a planeswalker? He's a main-stay on Ravnica, he doesnt need to travel to other planes, and I don't think they'd lame the character out by making him show up all the time outside of Ravnica*. So making him a planeswalker does nothing for the character.

* Niv-Mizzet is not the kind of character you want as your main character. He's an incredibly strong, incredibly smart, and a master at magic. There is very little you could throw at him that he wouldn't:

A) Destroy in moments.
B) Leave, find a solutin, and return.
C) Flee to another plane.

^ Alot of people forget that Niv will run away from a losing fight. He's not an idiot. That makes him a difficult character to put into a challening position because when push comes to shove, he runs. And at the same time, he's so powerful that any minor threat would be brushed aside.
… and then, the squirrels came.
I would totally buy in on the idea of him building a planeshifting engine, though. One of Niv-Mizzet's core passions is discovery. He wants to know everything. We know that he's met Jace, and probably other planeswalkers as well, so he knows that there are several worlds worth of knowledge out there that he cannot reach. If Jace told him about the Eldrazi, he would want to find them. Not to fight them, but to see what happens if you expose them to different types of magic. He would want to see how his regular experiments would function under the influence of Innistrad's moon. He would want to learn the potion magic of the kithkin of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor.

The world is his playground, but somtimes the world is not enough. And that is why Niv-Mizzet would want to leave Ravnica.
Skibo's post makes Niv sound like a terribly designed character. I'm not sure why people are obsessed with a character whose design seems to entierly be "I'm so smart I can do anything".

Also Barrinellizzle, how do we know Bolas is THAT smart. I know he is brilliantly brilliant, but has it been written that he is litterally the smartest thing that has ever (and will ever) exist?

Ain't that the truth?

Anyhoo, it's a possibility. I find it unlikely since Magic already has a planeswalking dragon with and tendencies, but it's definately something Niv might attempt. Jarad's Orders suggests that the experiments might be a means to finding something, so a cached spark could be the MacGuffin.

"Ah, the age-old conundrum. Defenders of a game are too blind to see it's broken, and critics are too idiotic to see that it isn't." - Brian McCormick

I just thought it would be interesting, but not because of Niv or Bolas themselves, but the multi-planar chaos and destruction it would bring.  It almost seems like an impetus for a Time Spiral Redux.  And yes, I'm also aware that there's always a vocal refrain of "Make [person's favorite characer/legend] a planeswalker!"  I don't even care if they were to make a Niv PW card.  I just think it would make for an interesting block and narrative arc.

At the very least we know MaRo thinks Niv Mizzet is definitely smarter than Bolas, although less powerful. MaRo is not always the greatest expert in  storyline, though.
Better idea, Niv-Mizzet is working with Jace to steal Bolas's spark. If Yagmoth could do it with a Godwalker, the two of them should have no trouble. However, weren't we promised Bolas had no direct relation to RTR's story?

Yawgmoth didn't do it, only Karn through the legacy and Memnarch with the ascension web ever transfered a spark (ignoring magic heart transplants).

If Niv-Mizzet wanted to steal a spark... Jace is right there. No need to somehow draw Bolas to Ravnica.

Perhaps Niv, in his neverending quest for knowledge, already knows how to planeswalk somehow.  Maybe he's aware that he'd be on Bolas's radar if he were to start walking, and wants to eliminate the threat.  Really though, unless I'm unaware of some other "big bad," the only real threat to a planeswalking Niv would be Bolas.

Personally, I don't think Niv-Mizzet gives a hoot about other planes. The Dracogenius can either create or discover metals (Mizzium) and elements (Nivmagus) and looks set to be inventing more. He doesn't feel like the kind who would think other planes who new things to be discovered when he's still inventing new things on Ravnica.

I get a feeling he's inventing a weapon that can fire throught Aether and hit a target on another plane. Imagine Bolas meditating on his realm and get hit by a laser Niv fired from Ravnica, Niv might be crazy enough to try that.

Just pure speculation, but I do believe whatever Niv is planning, it has to do with other planes. It won't be spark-related.

I hope you're right.  I want a planar Legacy Weapon that can be turned on New Phrexia built yesterday.

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

@mikemearls In essence, all those arguments I lost are being unlost. Won, if you will. We're doing it MY way, baby.

@biotech66 aren't you the boss anyway? isn't "DO IT OR I FIRE YOU!" still an option?

@mikemearls I think Perkins would throat punch me if I ever tried that. And I'd give him a glowing quarterly review for it.

I've said it on other threads, that since "Sinker" only has 1 plansewalker, it would allow Niv to be the sole focus of the set, it couldnt happen in RTR because its too early or GTC because it would overshadow the other guilds. If any of this were to go down tough, I dont think It would have anything to do with Bolas.
There's a whole lot of other reasons for Niv to be interested in planes and planeswalkers:

  • The weird absence and sudden reappearance of 'walkers after centuries

  • The activities of interplanar trade organizations like the Infinite Consortium

  • The separation of the Ghost Quarter from the rest of Ravnica

  • Hoac's nonsense

  • Gideon's nonsense

  • PLANESHIFTING NEPHILIM ZOMG

  • Ral's highly speculative nonsense

  • Countless other schemes that we mortals can only fitfully dream of

And, of course, we're only basing this supposition on a few lines in one article. Now, I think this is what the article is hinting at, but we don't really know, and there are plenty of people who think that it's just a convenient paragraph transition. It's so little to go on that I'm not sure it's worth debating, really.

This.
I feel like the rest of the RTR block Planeswalkers will be:

Gatecrash:
Gideon Jura (Red/White)
Kiora Atua (Blue/Green)

Sinker:
Ral Zarek (Blue/Red)

There is no need for Niv to go to other planes when he still has not yet took control of Ravnica. He could just use Ral as an agent.
Kiora has almost certainly been eliminated by a LOT of evidence.
We say almost, mostly as a formality.

Gideon is also (hopefully) going to remain mono-white.

Also "Taken".
"Has not yet taken control of Ravnica."

Indeed they are popular, as well as being very poorly written. I wasn't saying Niv didn't have a following. Just that he was a **** character.

Really? Sherlock Holmes, poorly written? Batman, poorly written? The important thing about these characters is not "I'm so smart I can do anything", it's the reasons they have for being that way. Sociopathic genius whose only joy comes from being smarter than those around him, and constantly sinking deeper into depression and drug addiction because he cannot find any satisfaction in his life. Not a badly written character.

A man who has devoted his life to strengthen his body and mind to become the ultimate avenger, while constantly being haunted by the memory of the people he lost along the way. Not a badly written character.

Now, I don't know enough about Niv's background and motivations to judge how well or poorly he is written, but saying that a character is automatically bad because of a single character trait is wrong.

Sherlock holmes is most certainly not amazingly well written. He has an illusion of depth but little else. But I'll be honest, arguing about literature gets people nowhere so I'm probably not going to continue on the holmes topic.

They were a mono-white organization. And just because they were doesn't mean Gideon becomes a different color.
Gideon Jura was printed as mono-white despite this showing him AFTER he split from the Order.

The outer layer of the Magic: the Gathering box, the carton, or crust, is fairly thin and light, and contains largely aluminosilcates. Within that lies the middle layer, consisting of the familiar booster pack. Although solid, the booster packs' high temperatures allow them to acutally move around within the booster box. This flow, sometimes called convection, is cited by frustrated box mappers as one of WOTC's most genious uses of thermodynamics since the Ravnica block. No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

MaRo has a thing for people opening boosters with bad cards. He proceeds to wring his hands and twirl his evil mustache that he grew for twirling purposes as a lightning bolt strikes in the background. Afterwards, he goes to make sure that the good cards are only opened by everyone's friends, and that we all only get to open bad cards. He does this by memorising each booster, than switching them around accordingly. Whenever someone complains about a card, he immediately jumps out from behind a chair to yell "WELL, IT'S NOT FOR YOU!" before merging back into the shadows in order to devise new ways in which he can screw over players, then claim that he has valid reasons for doing so.

But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

If you don't talk to anyone, that increases the odds that no one will talk to you.

JuliusPringle wrote:

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

This Niv-Mizzet-as-planeswalker movement as gone entirely too far. The dragon would be less interesting as a planeswalker, not more.

Also: hoping for a full-out Boros colors Gideon.

There's already been a Red/White planeswalker. Also, a Blue/White and Black/White one. Gideon will probably be Green/White.

What....? That isn't how walkers are designed at all. You are so incredibly wrong I am having trouble putting it into words.

Gideon will be mono-white. The ONLY other possibility is w/r if they decide to cater to terrible people who don't understand how colors work.

U/G: not yet
B/R: been done (Can't remember name)

There's no doubling yet, one planeswalker for each color pair. Going into RTR, We were missing U/R, U/G, G/W, and B/G. B/G was done in RTR. U/R is in DotP, and is expected in GateCrash. The U/R PW from the comics appears to be considered non-canon. U/G was also in DotP, and is rumored for the spring set. There is no G/W planeswalker in any media I'm aware of. Gideon may not be the G/W Planeswalker, but G/W is the most likely W/X for any walker.

Dack is canon, but is specifically hands off from the card game.
Kiora is not likely for Ravnica block at all.
Ral is expected in Sinker more than Gatecrash.

Gideon is specifically allied with the Boros... so W/G makes not a damn bit of sense.
Though honestly, I would greatly prefer a mono-white Gideon again. People seem to be completely ignoring the fact that he got his first card after the conclusion to Purifying Fire.

Sadly though, a W/R Gideon is possible considering how they pandered to people with the pathetic W/B Sorin.
