So, this won't actually be called "Mathset", but I don't have a name for it yet. It isn't an un-set, so BF, your silly cards won't work here - though feel free to post them because they are amusing. Oh, and I'm still working on M'Nool - but lately I've been having a lot more ideas about this, so even though it is probably a bad idea to start two Sets at once - I just can't help myself.

The rest of this post is reserved for Story I guess.

Oh, and here is the first card released to the public - no that one I posted yesterday doesn't count.

Oxidizer
Creature - Elemental (C)

"Fickle are the glowing embers."

1/2//1/21

1. Note on this. You may choose this creature's power and toughness to be any combination of these numbers at any given time. Priority and the stack still resolve normally. Or whatever.

And yes, there will be reasons to make it a 1/1, or a 1/2, or a 2/1.

Orbit (This permanent does not untap as usual. During each untap step it rotates 90o clockwise. When it has returned to an untapped position, it has completed its orbit. Any effect that would untap it, causes it to untap.)
Parity: As long as this creature's power and toughness are even/odd EFFECT.
Matrix [cost] - If you pay this card's Matrix Cost X becomes X2.
Maximize (appearing on spells with multiple options, videlicet, "up to three targets") - If you chose the maximum effect for this spell, EFFECT.
Prime - If an instant or sorcery with a single target that DOES SOMETHING, copy that spell. The copy targets this permanent.
X/Y//Z/N - A power/toughness system that allows a player to chose the value of their creature's power and toughness instantly.
Points - Points are like lands, except that they are spells. You still may only cast one point per turn. You may not have Points and Lands in the same deck. You may have any number of Basic Points in a deck.

The Legendary Illusions

For as long as any Euclidean can remember the five illusions have wandered the grid. The travel hither and thither, with no obvious pattern. This has confounded the Plane's mathamagician's for eons. Why would they track such creatures, one might inquire. Well, besides the obvious reason that every other being on the Plane has understandable patterns and rhythms to its motions and movements, there is one other reason. In the center of the grid, where X meets Y sits a temple as old as the grid itself. There are many antiquities within, and pilgrimage to the spot is extremely common. There are few adult Euclideans alive who have not seen the Temple. What do they see when they enter? On the far wall there is an alter and above it a Sacred Tapestry hangs. The Tapestry depicts the Holy Grid with each of its Four Quadrants. But below that image there is another. A Pentagrid. There is hovers between the Painted Quadratic Grid and the Real One, and under it the inscription reads: "There will come a day, and it shall be foretold, that on this day, the Five Pentalli (meaning the Illusions) shall be lain to dust. And from their deaths shall arise a new quadrant - nay, a pentadrant, and the grid shall become shaped in the manner befitting, and there will be many tears, and much blood, and a great deal of spittle." So, the prophesy tells it, and so the people believe it. And so, too, do the trackers and holy men watch these creatures, awaiting the day that the Grid is forever altered.
Torae Yokur

The Illusion of the Oxen. The Illusion of the Oxen hovers at all times half the length of its horns off the Grid. It chews incessantly. Its left eye is closed in what appears to be slumber. Its right eye peers straight ahead. Above the Oxen floats a Beryl Hecatohedron. As it travels, nearby eggs hatch, even those thought infertile. Winds calm and grass grows in its wake. To be born near the passing of the Ox, is to be a blessing unto future fertility. Offices associated with the Oxborn are often political or religious. When the Oxen is in your Quadrant it is said to be a good time to spare. Spare your children their punishments. Spare your animals their slaughter. Spare yourself your reprimands.

Talpulial

The Illusion of the Toad. The Illusion of the Toad hops slowly across the Grid. Its tongue is forever fully extended at a 45 degree angle from the ground and three times the length of its body. Its eyes constantly twitch in an attempt to view all that surrounds it. Above the Toad floats a Hyacinth Trapezohedron. As it travels streams and rivers reverse their flows. Wind will change direction. In its wake a great meandering estuary forms. To be born near the passing of the Toad, is to be a blessing unto future knowledge. Offices associated with the Toadborn are often scholarly in nature. When the Toad is in your Quadrant it is said to be a good time to learn. Learn through texts and tomes. Learn through listening to others. Learn through listening to yourself.

Dylocro

The Illusion of the Crocodile. The Illusion of the Crocodile swims through the air at the height of two-tall men stacked upon each other. Its tail forever dances back and forth. Its eyes are closed. Above the Crocodile floats a Carnelian Antiprism. As it travels the dying take their final breaths. Long-held desires are granted. A starving creature may find a quick demise or an incredible feast. In its wake bones sprout from the ground. These are considered sacred, and it is societal principle that one does not touch them. To be born near the passing of the Crocodile, is to be a blessing unto future power. Offices associated with the Crocodileborn are often Military or Competitive in nature. When the Crocodile is in your Quadrant it is said to be a good time for death. If one is dying, or is longing for death, one should end one's life. If one is longing for the death of another, it is a good time to kill.

Taelb

The Illusion of the Goat. The Illusion of the Goat will only move when no one is watching. When it does it seems to teleport great distances across the Grid. Because of its sacred nature, the Goat has many followers. They watch it constantly and in shifts, so that it will not leave their quadrant. However, the Goat always finds a way. It is never in one place for too long. At the pivotal moment, every watcher will blink, or look up at a sudden noise, or drift off to sleep, or be blinded by a cloud of dust. It does not matter. The Goat has never been in any Quadrant for longer than a fortnight. It stands completely still, letting out a low, melodious bleat. The Bleat itself is often that which causes its watchers to fall prey to slumber. Such a soothing sound. Its eyes stare simultaneously into the eyes of every watcher. No one knows what they do when nobody is watching. Above it floats a Chrysalite Rhombihexacron. In its general vicinity, sweet smells abound, memories come to those who long for them, and troubling events in one's past are wiped from one's mind. When it disappears it will leave behind one Crocus growing from the point at which it stood. The Crocus is treated as Holy, and it is crime to in any way injure it. To be born near the passing of the Goat, is to be a blessing unto future spirit. Offices associated with the Goatborn are often Magical or Artistic. When the Goat is in your quadrant, it is said to be a good time for trying. Trying what you've yet to try. Trying what you've failed at in the past. Trying the things that you know you cannot succeed at.

Htr

The Illusion of the Ape. The Illusion of the Ape swings from point to point on the branches of invisible trees. Its brow is forever furrowed and its eyes move freely, looking only at what interests them. Above it floats an Onyx Sphere. When it is near, lost items are found, difficult jars are opened, and questions are answered. In its wake, saplings sprout. To be born near the passing of the Ape is be a blessing unto future nature. Offices associated with the Apeborn are often Agricultural or those that require great traveling. When the Ape is in your quadrant, it is said to be a good time for questioning and answering. Question the things you've always wished to know. Answer the questions that those around you, including yourself, have always asked of you.

Calender

Eight official months or Cycles:
1. Ichcycle - 21 days
2. Nicycle - 25 days
3. Sancycle - 34 days
4. Yoncycle - 35 days
5. Gocycle - 45 days
6. Rocycle - 66 days
7. Nanacycle - 67 days
8. Kucycle - 80 days (This is a remnant from ancient and forbidden cults - it is now colloquially accepted and the history is perhaps a little suppressed. More on that below.)

X. Nurucycle - 0 days (at one time it was 10 days) - The Nurucycle is not spoken of. Its existence is questionable. Whether or not people ever lived in a world with Nine Months is subject to a great deal of disbelief. However there are subverts that believe that at one time, eons ago, there were nine Cycles. They hold that Nurucycle was dismantled and the extra days were installed in Nicycle and Sancycle, with the last day added to Yoncycle. They do this secretly of course. Nurucycle is a highly taboo topic, and discussion of it could lead to banishment or worse.

X2:

The second set in the Block:

Mechanics:

(White) Equality: If this creature's power and toughness are equal to another creature's power and toughness, both creatures gain STUFF.

Function: Targets blah blah blah. Or something.

(Blue) Parallel: Permanents at the same angle as this permanent, EFFECT.

(Red) Mandlebrot X: Whenever a player Mandlebrot's he or she copy's the last spell cast X times. Each time reduce all numbers by half and round down.

E.g.

Mandlegoblin
Creature - Goblin Berserker
Flash
When Mandlegoblin enters the battlefield, Mandlebrot 1 (Copy the last instant or sorcery card cast, reduce all numbers on that spell by half. Round down if need be.)

Then:

Mandleburn
Instant
Mandleburn deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
Mandlbrot 3 (Copy the last instant or sorcery card cast, reduce all numbers on that spell by half. Round down if need be. Repeat this process 3 times.)

(Green) Sum: Target creature's P and T each become equal to its P + its T.

Summoning Strength
Instant
Sum target creature. (Its power and toughness each become equal to its power plus its toughness)

I don't know if these are the mechanics I'm going to use, but I need one more. Black. . .

Hypotenuse: When this permanent taps, put it at a 45 degree angle. Blah, Nevermind. . .

Quotient. No.

Decimal. . .

(Black) Negative: When you cast this spell, you may pay its Negative Cost, if you do EFFECT. Two examples:

Target creature gets +1/-1
Negative : -1/+1

Target player loses 5 Life.
Negative Gain Five Life: Counter this spell.

The formatting seems pretty counter-intuitive, and Un-set-y. I can imagine it being confused with the "1/2" cards from Unhinged specifically.

Have you considered similar but more clear notation, for example (1|2)/(1|2)? Some kind of parenthetical separation seems easier to grok. And as a bonus it looks kind of math-y.

I do like the idea.
Okay, well I'll have to hear some more feedback on the formatting to find out what is the most intuitive way. I can see how it would be difficult to grok in any of the potential formatting. You way does look more mathematical. That's a bonus.

I'm confused as to whether this actually changes the creature's power, or simply uses it as a variable.
a printed version of a monocolored version of the card gives you 10 mana with 5 lands.

don't think 5 mana at the point is gonna break the game. other than just so much fun. I originally priced it at but thought "heck" this is just fantsy card. lol

yea it meant to reduce the power. but the draw cards were so potent that i don't care about whether or not it actually does change the power. so interpret however you will lol

XD cheers. Thanks for commenting on the cards. appreciate the feedback. Sorry i'm not taking them more serious than i really should.

Glad you like them. Yeah, this set is going to be X-Heavy. I may expand these to a five card cycle. We'll see. I don't think I want more than five cards based on this gimmick though.

Love the even-odd thing. So, what would our colors care about?

: Toughness?
: Cards in hand/library. (I would avoid library, just because it's kinda griefy.)
: Opponent's life total.
: Power?
: Creatures.
: Your life total.
: Cards in graveyard.
: Number of counters? Cards in hand?
: Number of spells cast this turn.
: Number of creatures that attacked this turn.

You'll always want the blue one to be even. I'd change it to mill and tap or I dunno. Draw X cards is usually rare.
I s'pose I could change it to tap. X is going to find homes in every rarity. This set is all about the X.

139359831 wrote:

I actually don't like the Godyl sorcery cycle, simply because you have to choose targets regardless of if you've paid an even X or odd X to cast it.

Example 1: I cast Godyl's Gluttony for X=6. I still have to choose 6 artifacts which are valid targets, even though they won't get destroyed.

Example 2: I cast Godyl's Grandeur for X=8. I still have to target a creature. Oh hey! My opponent kills that creature in response to my spell because they understand the rules as well as, if not better than, I do. The spell's only target is now an illegal target, the spell fizzles, I gain no life even though I paid an even amount for X.

Honestly, it's not that annoying for the black one. But either way, I think you'd be better off finding a way to template them so that they're modal, but at the same time only modal based on what you paid. Because as we all know, you don't have to choose legal targets for all modes of a Bant Charm when you cast it, only the mode you choose.

Perhaps

Choose one--Destroy X target artifacts, where X is odd; or ~ deals X damage to target creature or player, where X is even.

So you choose your mode and then have to pay a valid cost.
I don't know if knifethrower's wording works, but I think "choose one" is necessary here. how about:
choose one--if x is even ~ deals x damage, or, if x is odd, destroy x target artifacts. I'm pretty sure this works.

the only problem with this is that you can still choose to destroy artifacts when x is even.

Yeah, that would work, but I didn't suggest it for the same reason you stated (bolded). Sure, the artifacts wouldn't be destroyed due to the X not being odd, but...

There is another way the spells could be worded, but I think it would seriously mess up the way pablo intended the cycle to be. Using Godyl's Gluttony for example:

Godyl's Gluttony
Sorcery
If X is even, ~ deals X damage to up to one target creature or player.
If X is odd, destroy up to X target artifacts.

The good side: You don't have to choose X target artifacts when X is even. The bad side: You can now destroy an even amount of artifacts when you pay an odd X, as opposed to needing there to be exactly that many legal artifact targets.

Khans of Tarkir Clan Quiz
After three iterations of taking the quiz, it says each time that I'm Temur, the clan. Which is funny because the dual-color tests still yield the same two results as before.

Fatal Abacus

"Once upon this abacus, Godyl did his taxes. Godyl is no longer taxed."

Meh. Maybe I'll just take away the three last ones. I don't really feel like "fixing" them. New cards:

Two-Fingered Horner
Creature - Satyr Druid (C)
Creature spells with a converted mana cost of 10, 12, 14, or 16 cost 2 less to cast.

"Just wait until I lose one of these."

2/2

Shadowy Figure
Creature - Shapeshifter (C)
As long as Shadowy Figure is in your hand, its converted mana cost is the number of your choice.

"You get what you pay for."

3/2

I really need to improve my FT skillz.

So you could make shadowy figure cost ?

I think the ability would only work while the card is in the hand (there are cards that care about CMC in the hand). As far as casting it, it moves to the stack before costs are determined so a player will always be paying the , barring any outside influences.

Although I am worried about the interactions it has with some of the cards I linked above, especially Disaster Radius. Or combining it with Painter's Servant and any of the Shoals (choose the appropriate color for the Shoal, exile the Figure naming what its CMC is, get your X effect worth whatever arbitrarily large number you choose, like 65457263487695623658; since the alternate casting cost cares about the CMC of the card while it's in your hand and the ability of the Figure works from the hand (albeit it doesn't become known information unless it's revealed from your hand or changes zones), it doesn't matter that it's a 3 cmc when it hits the exile zone). I'd put a cap on the ability so nobody can do such crazy things with it. Maybe give it CMC equal to something, like the number of lands you control? Again limiting it to your hand, cause I like that you can't tutor for it using any Transmute card you want to. Or win clashes with it.

Hmm. That is a good point, but since none of those are being reprinted it'll be a strictly modern combo piece, and if it gets out of hand, I can ban it in said format.

I still think it might be too strong, so perhaps lowering the power level of the actual creature? What about a 2/1 for ? Still usable, but not as abusable. I mean, pretty much as abusable, but less, um, efficient.
