10/8/2012 Draft Simulator

This thread is for discussion of this week's Draft Simulator, which goes live Monday morning on magicthegathering.com.
I went Golgari and I think the deck would work quite well. No real bombs, but a good curve and good removal. Maybe you should even flatten the curve further and take in the Dark Favor which passed by so often.
The mana is slightly unclear. You want green mana first as most cheap creatures are in green, however all the removal needs double black mana, so its a little tricky. But I think 18 lands with 50:50 should do the trick and if you get flooded then you still have Diabolic Revelation  as an X-spell and Liliana's Shade loves lots of (black) mana anyway.

Creatures:

1 Arbor Elf G
1 Duty-Bound Dead B
2 Timberpack Wolves 1G
2 Deadly Recluse 1G
2 Walking Corpse 1B
1 Centaur Courser 2G
1 Spike Baloth 3G
1 Bloodhunter Bat 3B
1 Liliana's Shade 2BB
1 Veilborn Ghoul 4B
1 Silklash Spider 3GG
1 Vastwood Gorger 5G
15

Spells
1 Crippling Blight B
2 Murder 1BB
1 Cower in Fear 1BB

I may have cheated a bit by refreshing the second I saw Krenko, but gobbos is the way to go. Final deck:

17 x Mountain

1 x Dragon Hatchling
4 x Goblin Arsonist
1 x Goblin Battle Jester
1 x Krenko, Mob Boss
3 x Mogg Flunkies
1 x Reckless Brute
2 x Rummaging Goblin

1 x Fervor
2 x Krenko's Command
1 x Reverberate
1 x Ring of Valkas
2 x Searing Spear
1 x Trumpet Blast
1 x Volcanic Geyser
1 x Wild Guess

I tried the same and ended up with the following differences:

- 2 x Rummaging Goblin
+ 1 x Canyon Minotaur

- 1 x Searing Spear
+ 2 x Ring of Valkas

- 1 x Fervor
- 1 x Volcanic Geyser
- 1 x Wild Guess
+ 3 x Volcanic Strength

I have less removal which is probably bad. The extra Ring of Valkas's and Volcanic Strengths will make it play quite differently, I think. The reliability and speed of monochrome goblins should make it a really good deck regardless.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.

All I'm saying is, I don't really see how she goes around petrifying swords and boots and especially mirrors. How the heck does she beat a Panoptic Mirror? It makes no sense for artifacts either. Or enchantments, for that matter. "Well, you see, Jimmy cast this spell to flood the mountain, but then the gorgon just looked at the water really hard and it went away."

Krenko, Mob Boss
Searing Spear

3Mountain
2Swamp

Something fishy about this draft, pack 1 contains extra Rare, pack 2 extra uncommon, really late Epic.  Oh well, seeing the Door in the first pack caused me to plan for it to table, when it did, it became my alternate win option, then with Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker showing up late, I am going more for those two than anything else really.

Predominately G/b deck though.

Creatures (11):
Arbor Elf x 2  -- Accleration
Deadly Recluse x 2 -- Fast defenders who are good early and late.
Elvish Visionary -- Cantrip + defensive fodder
Walking Corpse x 2 -- Was thinking of including ring, but it just missed the cut, still need bodies though.
Mwonvuli Beast Tracker -- find those spiders
Garruk's Packleader -- Every deck needs some beef
Silklash Spider -- Control the sky, defend rest
Vastwood Gorger -- The other beefy option

Spells (8):
Farseek -- Most likey to be used to get a Plains
Titanic Growth x 2
Searing Spear x 2 -- You NEED removal, single red is easily do-able
Murder x 2 -- Unconditional kill
Oblivion Ring -- removes more than problem CREATURES

Artifacts (3):
Gem of Becoming x 2 -- Helps find those lands
Door to Nothingness -- The "I win!" card

Planeswalker (1):
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker -- Nasty Epic, unexpected bonus

Land (17):
Swamp x 4
Forest x 7
Plains x 2
Mountain x 2
Island x 2

Deck is creature light, but also have 5 removal and 2 combat tricks.  Any land distruction or mill will likely kill your chance for Door.  But with all that removal and some well timed Titanic Growth, it can win the traditional way.  But being able to win with either Door to Nothingness or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker is the aim.

Wondering if I should find a way to add 3rd Plains because Gem won't fish those up.

Unfortunately, I don't really have time @ the moment to create the actual deck for this draft.  But after my first real-life experience with an 8 person, competitive draft I decided that KISS was the way to go.  Creature based, green and fast if possible, preference to creatures with flying, flash, vigilance and other special abilities.  When G/U first pack.  Hate drafted O-ring.  Thought, "hey maybe splash some white", then Krenko came...then BOLAS?  Too bad I didn't start drafting black and red oh...3 PACKS AGO!

Also, to an earlier poster: I didn't see Odric!

So I lied...I took the time to build the deck.

@McSlicks  I love you deck.  Cool

These computer drafters are not as good as the real life thing.  Ok, so I have seen some really bad magic players draft, but usually they draft the rares even if they don't need them.

Not sure what I am playing.  I saw three Healer of the Pride and wanted to draft a white deck with the Oblivion ring as you can see, but it is just not there or not good enough compared to what else you can draft.  This is my 3rd look through the pod.  My first draft I think was best I drafted Black/Green with some cards I hate drafted...

Ack1 The weakest offensive deck I've ever had in one of these drafts.  After drafting Bolas P3p7 over the exalted skeleton, I was tickled that in the very last meaningful pick of the draft I was presented with "Gem of Becoming", making Bolas playable!  While he may win me a game or three, I'm still not feeling too good about my overall chances in the tournament.

I inadvertantly picked up some support for Krenko early on, but to be honest, I'd have picked him up even if I didn't have any other goblins in the deck.  Then I Lolled at the Nicky B. showing up and decided to run 4 colors, just cuz and got rewarded by a last pick Gem.

Round 1:
Silklash Spider Hard choice, but this is better in the end than the volcanic geyser
Murder sure, this looks good
Gem of Becoming I have no idea what direction this deck is going
Goblin Arsonist I like him
Deadly Recluse Great blocker
Deadly Recluse Great blocker
Vastwood Gorger Fatty
Elvish Visionary Good low end
Goblin Arsonist I like
Goblin Arsonist I like
Farseek Color fixing is always good to pick up
Titanic Growth eh...
Serpent's Gift eh...
Hydrosurge whatevs
Island whatevs

Round 2:
Sentinel Spider Serra Spider
Garruk's Packleader Good in Green
Ranger's Path Might or might not end up playing with this.
Goblin Arsonist I like
Ring of Thune vigilance
Veilborn Ghoul recurring beater?
Mind Rot eh...
Sign in Blood card draw is nice
Arbor Elf ramp
Ring of Xathrid At the moment I'm still G/B/r so...maybe I'll find some good black critters later on?
Vile Rebirth I desperately need critters
Blood Reckoning sure, why not
Dark Favor whatevs
Hydrosurge whatevs
Forest whatevs

Round 3:
Krenko, Mob Boss Awwwww....gotta pass the Rancor though.  This guy wins games if left unanswered.  Guess now I'm G/R/b
Mwonvuli Beast Tracker I have some nice spiders to fetch...
Duskdale Wurm Fetchable and awesome bomb.
Hellion CrucibleI can splash this
Searing Spear nice removal
Fervor Hasty Krenko
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker O.O...4-colors maybe?
Smelt I don't have artifact removal yet
Krenko's Command more gobbos
Naturalize ah, this is more what I'm looking for
Crippling Blight sure
Fog eh...
Faith's Reward whatevs
Gem of Becoming o.O?  Sweet.  4-colors it is.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

***************************************************************************************

MaRo: I redesigned him while the effect was on the stack.

Reading the topic I think this is one of the more powered drafts I've seen so far.

As usual, I started with one colour and kept looking for a good card to decide my secondary colour (I tend to avoid black, though).
Silklash Spider looked good and I decided on red when Volcanic Strength came along. I suppose I didn't want another draft where I keep picking the same colour until I am forced to choose. Reviewing it maybe I could have actually gone mono green this time. Lots of big creatures in green.

Please do not post any more in this thread, as it is being pointed to from the 10/22 draft which has its own thread.
Ok, admittedly I am a sucker for green in this set.  But I have seen many decks that would benefit from this ring even when not playing green.  Pack 2 had tons of options, but how to squeeze in the Thundermaw Hellkite was the real challenge in deck building for me.

Creatures (15):
War Falcon
Arbor Elf x 2
War Priest of Thune
Silvercoat Lion
Deadly Recluse
Attended Knight
Crusader of Odric
Guardians of Akrasa
Yeva's Forcemage
Griffin Protector
Roaring Primadox
Garruk's Packleader
Thragtusk
Thundermaw Hellkite

Spells (5):
Prey Upon
Rancor
Pacifism
Titanic Growth
Oblivion Ring

Artifacts (2):
Ring of Kalonia
Gem of Becoming

Land (18):
Sunpetal Grove
Rootbound Crag
Plains x 7
Forest x 7
Mountain x 2

Not best please with all the choices I made in the end, but this is the deck I came up with.  I put in the Gem of Becoming strictly as a way to find a Mountain.  Over priced to be sure, but if I have Thundermaw Hellkite I want to be sure it plays.  I ended up cutting the 2nd War Falcon for the Silvercoat Lion because I only have 3 other solider/knight cards to activate the falcon.  Simply put Rancor or ring my weenies into threats, drop big fatties late to finish them off.  If you get the Roaring Primadox - Thragtusk combo up and running, you will have some really ugly looking wins.
