New Trick with Pariah and Nomad ---Version: Aura Servants... is this a bug or how its supposed to wo

Playing 1v1v1v1 with Wuster and a few buds we found a new trick...Wuster was using Aura Servants and we learned...

You can use Nomad to cast pariah from yourgraveyard on an opponents creature but you still own the card. So when they swing, all the damage is directed to their creature.
It dies, pariah goes in your graveyard and you pull it out again on your turn and put it on one of their creatures...
Essentially, they just keep killing their own creature over and over again....

We found this out when Wuster "accidentally" cast a pariah from his graveyard on my Mortivore as the AI wanted him to put it there....I was MORTOVORIFIED when my creature just died. I thought he accidentally gave me the game (just keep regenerating it with Pariah on it...)...

That's not a new trick, that's how Enchantments like Pariah have always worked, and using them in that way goes at least back to doing things like casting Spirit Link on your opponents' creatures.

Nice, it was news to me and Wuster and the other two guys.
The nomad shouldn't be able to target the opponents creatures. That is a bug, not that karstien doesn't enjoy exploiting it.
Avenger of Zendikar is not game... Got a question as to whether a card without shroud or hexproof is good? Answer is, dies to removal. "Control Slivers"

What if I target an opponent with Pariah from my hand...does it work the same?
Yes, thats a valid use for pariah
Yes, thats a valid use for pariah

Now I know what Hanna, ships navigator is for....to return pariah to your hand so you can recast it on an opponent each turn if they swing...

Need to make room for that card and I guess the nomad thing is like the silent arbiter bug.....it's really tempting to take advantage of it but I don't want to cheat to win. Where is the fun or skil in that?
I used Pariah in the tourney vs Mobius on his Ajani Pridemate thinking damage *I* would deal to his life would detroy the creature.... whoops.
I used Pariah in the tourney vs Mobius on his Ajani Primemate thinking damage *I* would deal to his life would detroy the creature.... whoops.

But if he attacked you with his pariah enchanted Pridemate, the Pridemate would have died correct?
Yep, I just wish I used it before he started whacking me... I was waiting till I had enough power that an attack on his life would kill the 6/6 Pridemate. Dunno what I was thinking.
Yah, the Nomad is bugged. Just remembered reading about it in the bugs list. Never really played the ability but in this game it was my only creature so I had to rely on it's ability. I did accidentally target Morty. The AI had it set to target him and I mashed hastily. I wanted to put Pariah on my Nomad as it was indestructible. Didn't mean to exploit the bug, but I didn't remember at the time and it won me a 4pffa. Wink

Edit: Shame on you Karstien. Never exploit a bug you know about.

You know what I've got more issues. Whats up with the story in this game? The adverts said I was going to team up with Chandra and we were going to kick butt and chew bubblegum across the planes on a revenge campaign against some... guy she knew I guess? Who's Ramaz anyway? What do I get instead? I beat Chandra like 2 minutes in with a mono-green stompy thing Garruk gave me (why does he keep giving all these new planeswalkers his deck) and then I spent like 5 hours jumping from plane to plane picking up random nicknacks for her mantlepiece while she sits back back doing her nails or something. I was thrown in jail! I got hit by a Roil Storm twice! Do you know how many rats are on Ravnica, Chandra? All of them! All of the rats! All of the rats eating me!

Then we go kick her Ex's bearded-screaming-butt and what does she do to help? Nothing! She throws of the occasional fire ball and spends her time trying not to freeze to death. You should have worn pants Chandra. While we're on the subject what happened to your shoes? You had like Steelies on. Steelies are cool. Now your running around with stupid boots with like 5-inch heels? Thats not appropriate footware for Planeswalking! That's not appropriate footware for normal walking! At least Liliana is doing it for the whole 'evil is sexy' thing and can summon undead to carry her when she breaks her ankle. What are you going to do ride a Phoenix? Its made of fire! You'll fall right through! Man I should have gone Planeswalking with Liliana - yeah she'd crack my head open with a rock 5 minutes in and raise my corpse to serve her but at least we could have gone dancing!

Or maybe the Sun Titan now gets its day in the, um....sun. Still not sure if it's better than a Sovereigns of Lost Alara, but it's seeming more and more like Aura Servants has two kinds of builds - control, where Flickerwisp, Hanna, Ship's Navigator and Sun Titan are crucial for things like Pariah, Narcolepsy and Pacifism, and an aura build, where the name of the game is turning your weenies into fatties. Both sound pretty good...

@ocal
One example. Flicker a Pacifism off a creature you may no longer consider a threat. Next turn Pacifism bypasses the stack as it is not cast and does not Target. Now Pacify that big bad Hexproof.

It's all dependant on personal opinion really. I love the card, it has so many uses. I can bring it on as a 3/1 flier and forget the ability, or even better, flicker my partners tapped mana to provide him access to an instant for the opponents turn. Flicker an enchanted creature to remove the buff/nerf, or flicker my own enchantment to move it to something else. Flicker a troublesome blocker or effect off the battlefield, such as an obliterater whiel we swing through or underworld dreams while we draw cards to our hearts content. Flicker a permanant that has been stolen to return it to your control. Flicker an etb creature like sun titan or auramancer to use the effect again.

So many uses, it can save you in many situations. I run every one I can get my hands on.

I didnt know mana comes back untapped....that is pretty sweet! Thx...

I'm still not sold on the flicker 1v1 but in 2HG it seems like a very handy card...

Wuster, its a nice trick moving the pacifism to a hexproof but the actual in game oppurtunities to do this are pretty slim in this format. Seems its most useful vs the mirror match and I wonder, does it let you bypass a creature with a whispersilk cloak atached to it? But even there it can just be switched to another creature next turn...

Works like a dream, but don't try it to cast anything but an instant or flash, since it comes back in the end step. And I assume pacifism works the same way, it still targets in duels, and can't be put on those enemy hexproofs. Works that way with narcolepsy at the very least. Would be great if it worked though.

In theory, I agree, but in practice, it failed on the 10/9 flying troll with hexproof, lifelink, vigilance, regeneration, indestructable and first strike I tried to narcolepsy last night. Then again, I can use the nomad to enchant enemy creatures, so duels takes away with one hand and gives with the other I guess.

You couldn't even put an enchantment on your own 4/4 angel....that was some good Luls last night. Protection from yourself. I think the Angel knew you were knocking down the cold ones and was worried

Damn Karstien, in theory it should work. I wanted to try it this evening.

If I see you on tonight we can do a mirror match 1v1 and just test it with pacifism now....

I'd also like to see what happens when a blood cultists kills a goblin arsonist to see if the game gets it right...
If Flicker's ability is supposed to work like Retether, which I've been reading up on, then it should be able to put Pacifism or Narcolepsy on either a Hexproof or Shrouded creature.  Shroud isn't protection, it's "can't be targetted by anything", which is functionally the same as Hexproof ("Can't be targetted by your opponent") when it comes to doing this trick.

So there are obviously some bugs going on here.  Stainless, why does WOTC keep hiring you?
No. Shroud is. Just like protection, which I found out last night.

Not even. All shroud does is stop it from being targeted. If you can put an aura onto the battlefield with the nomad, it can attach to a shroud creature just fine.*

Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

You are absolutely correct on both counts, in paper magic. This is duels though, and there are bugs that slip through the net regarding some of the more complex features. You still have to target with nomad I believe, though I could be mistaken, you certainly do with flickerwisp, and for all intents and purposes, land IS mana in this game. It taps and untaps as you cast, and if you flicker a tapped and it comes back untapped, you can use it again.

Yes, everyone is in the right here. Shroud still has the word Target. It's just more encompassing verbata.

No. Shroud is. Just like protection, which I found out last night.

Not even. All shroud does is stop it from being targeted. If you can put an aura onto the battlefield with the nomad, it can attach to a shroud creature just fine.*

I didnt know mana comes back untapped....that is pretty sweet! Thx...

Land is not mana. Land produces mana. Compare Llanowar Elves to Frontier Guide[/nitpick]

*In actual game rules, I don't know all the quirks of the game, since I'm not too keen to actually play the game due to, well, the quirks of the game.

What if the creature doesn't have shroud but is protected by an atifact with shroud (aka whispersilk cloak) does this also still work?

I don't think so in duels, but that is where flickerwisp comes into play. You can flicker the artifact and then pacify it. After that, it's all the same, the artifact won't remove the enchantment.

The question there becomes whether or not Pariah counts as the source of the redirected damage.

It doesn't.  Pariah reads "all damage dealt to you is dealt to enchanted creature", so the source remains unchanged.
Now I'm just itching to cast Pariah on a Phyrexian Obliterator.....

Im in for the massive lulz that will ensue...

You are absolutely correct on both counts, in paper magic. This is duels though, and there are bugs that slip through the net regarding some of the more complex features.

Indeed, just figured I'd point that out in case anybody starts with duels and decides to move to paper Magic. Especially the land/mana thing. It's a common mistake that causes new players to think Simic Growth Chamber taps to put an island and a forest into play.

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies.

I have the same problem with women.

Blue players get all the overpowerered cards like JTMS. I think it's time that wizards gave something to people who remember what magic is really about: creatures.
Initially yes, Wizards was married to blue. However, about a decade ago they had a nasty divorce, and a few years after that they began courting the attention of Green. Then in Worldwake they had a nasty affair with their ex, but as of Innistrad, things seem to have gotten back on track, and Wizards has even proposed.

Good to know.  Sounds like a fun little combination then.

Yeah, you'll see people Murdering their own Obliterator for that.
Either that or they'll misread both cards (like they already do Obliterator) and attack the second you put it on.
Just keep in mind, a Pariah'd Phyrexian Obliterator is still dangerous if it blocks one of your creatures.
