Quick Contest - 5 Hours - A Stretch in Black

Howdy.
Quicky contest.
Running 5 hours from now.

I want a mono-black creature with reach.
The reach should be very flavorful.  Just a black spider, french vanilla, will bore me to death.
This is all about flavor and nifty ways to give black reach.

Go!

Edit = Did a quick confirmation: There are no mono-black creatures with reach in print!  OMG!  The closest is Cairn Wanderer.  So, you really have your work cut out for you to find a way to throw it into black (and be more creative than a black widow).
Tower of Corpses
Creature - Zombie
Defender
Whenever a creature dies, ~ levels up.
1/2
Level 3-6: Reach 3/5
Level 7+: ~ loses defender and gains trample. 7/9

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

@mikemearls In essence, all those arguments I lost are being unlost. Won, if you will. We're doing it MY way, baby.

@biotech66 aren't you the boss anyway? isn't "DO IT OR I FIRE YOU!" still an option?

@mikemearls I think Perkins would throat punch me if I ever tried that. And I'd give him a glowing quarterly review for it.

Angelbane Trapper

Creature-Human Assassin
Defender, Reach, Protection from Angels
Whenever Angelbane Trapper blocks an Angel, Angelbane Trapper gains Deathtouch until end of turn.

Khans of Tarkir Clan Quiz
After three iterations of taking the quiz, it says each time that I'm Temur, the clan. Which is funny because the dual-color tests still yield the same two results as before.

I am Black/Green

Take The Magic Dual Colour Test - Beta today!

Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.

I am both selfish and instinctive. I value growth and community, as long as they favour my own objectives; I enjoy nature, and I particularly enjoy watching parts of nature die. At best, I am resilient and tenacious; at worst, I'm uncontrollable and destructive.

Oh, but wait, there were multiple answers that fit my thoughts to some questions. What colors did they say I was?

Wall of Meat Hooks

so, my first thought had been an Ooze, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who went there

grades =

Morgothra = Tower of Corpses = I like it until it suddenly loses defender and has trample -- it's a giant stack of the dead that's sentient enough to swap down opposition when it gets tall enough; why does it then uproot itself and crash through defenses? -- I'd prefer if it could drop a corpse out and spawn zombies (or something)

AzureShade = Takenuma Chain-Flinger = very weird to have so much reference to the Oni cards, without having it care whether you also control a demon -- those cards were all about making you control both a demon and an ogre; this one seems very out of place without that -- the huge brute with a chain whip is acceptable flavor

Cisnero = Angelbane Trapper = love the base concept; obvious parallel to Halo Hunter -- too many abilities going on; an assassin with defender is a major shock to the senses, I'm not okay with that idea -- it's very, VERY specific angel hate, but doesn't do enough else..

ChaosLight = Skaab Recluse = yes, it's a fair design (though, as black, p/t totally shouldn't be that high) but basically the least imaginative way to do the contest -- thanks for submission, though -- -- and, seriously, lilian killed him with spiders? how did I miss this absurdity?

Dudibus = Indentured Imp = "imp" is a creature type.. there're are lots of them; why is this a demon and not an imp? -- is really nifty flavor, but would make just as much sense that it loses hexproof and gains first strike.. doesn't really need to be reach, and if we're trying for the first black reacher, it has to be full-out need

turnip_song = Horrid Hand of Orms-by-Gore = reference made me smile first three times I saw it (probably will on the fourth, but we're not there yet) -- at least there are some other eyes out there to make the original's ability more relevant.. -- I like this a whole lot; keep imagining wall masters from zelda, and that's awesome

Edacade = Starving Ooze//Towering Ooze = omg, so messy.. the concept behind this is awesome, but it came out just so inelegant; it's a real shame -- I do realize that as I complain about wordiness and complexity, there isn't any way to really condense it, and it does make sense -- in all, awesome design, just not the prettiest

metalevolence = Wall of meat Hooks = "persistent sound of dripping" won me over; flavor text there is phenomenal -- even as a defender wall, with reach and wither, 2/5 is touch strong.. and I could see giving meat hooks first strike, what with Wall of Razors and Wall of Spears; would of course need even more revision to p/t to work out, though

Taramoor = Lashing Leech = I really like the last ability; that is something they really should have included in that block -- the lashing makes sense for why he throws a poison counter on an opponent, but not sold on the lashing all the way up into the sky.. if we're making the first black creature with reach, the flavor has to be there 100%

Kenku = Wall of Shade = 13 of the 25 shades in print a 1/1s.. it is kinda their thing; making a creature that "can block unblockable creatures" doesn't do it for me; it's like "destroy target indestructible creature" or "choose a creature with hexproof; it loses hexproof until end of turn".. as much as I hate hexproof, I acknowledge that sometimes you have to work around the mechanics, and not just flip them off

VRdragoon = Bird-Hunter Ooze = that is so underpowered.. I know we're making a first of a kind creature here, but is a seriously cost.. and you're getting so little for it.. and that's guaranteed to die first time you give it reach unless you're also comboing with buffs.. -- this could really use more substance; and flavor text explaining why we have the first ooze able to reach up into the sky

Fenix = Albino Vampire = so, he's jumping up into the sky to pull down his bloodmates? expressly state no flight, but he can get up there every time someone with flying comes by? it's just a little confusing -- I LOVE vampires, and like the idea of an albino vamp, and generally into cards about a tribal pariah.. but some more explanation here would have helped

Sebanovich = Slender Man = thanks for avoiding some of the rules nightmares -- generally not a fan of weird keywording, but fair enough.. we're stretching here -- 4/4 is a bit strong

McKinzie = Grave Leaper = holy nightmare; so you always have a blocker, that can block flying too, unless it gets exiled.. and it's cmc 1? -- that is absurd over-power

magicpablo666 = Triadabatrachus = ...does it come into play after the lure counters are gone?

theScion = Slithering Pustule = wording is really messy; maybe "at the beginning of the end step, but a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of ~ for each creature dealt combat by ~ that died this turn"..? and that's still so messy!

vlord = Mud-Hidden Predator = pretty darn limited; there arne't that many insects out there.. but I guess there are enough, and this isn't so super dependant on them; it's a good defender against insects, but otherwise just a 2/1 for cmc 2.. which I can deal with -- I like it a lot

winner = pending further review...

Wow. I'm actually surprised I won. Cause I agree completely with your observation of my card: it is messy. Not as messy as it started out, but still messy. When I started on the card, it was just a single-faced card. But I felt like it was too crowded. Then I remembered DFCs and thought "Why not?" Not as crowded in the text box(es), but ugly nonetheless. Also helped in thinking up a name, cause I really had no idea how to convey through name alone an ooze that was slowly (or quickly, I guess, since it removes a counter each upkeep) starving to death, but when it was full it was huge enough to block creatures in the sky.
