Return to Ravnica draft 1!

It's time to draft Return to Ravnica!

A lot of people know I wasn't a fan of the original Ravnica block but this one is looking pretty sweet to me so far.

Pack 1:

Supreme Verdict
Soulsworn Spirit
Rites of Reaping
Dark Revenant
Aerial Predation
Stealer of Secrets
Golgari Longlegs
Pursuit of Flight
Essence Backlash
Electrickery
Tower Drake
Sundering Growth
Sewer Shambler
Concordia Pegasus FOIL
I'm a big fan of sweepers in draft and I like Supreme Verdict.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.

Or enchantments, for that matter. "Well, you see, Jimmy cast this spell to flood the mountain, but then the gorgon just looked at the water really hard and it went away."
Supreme Verdict
I like golgari the best, but nothing to interesting in this pack, and a sweeper is always nice.
Verdict.

I don't think Azorious is that great, but there also doesn't appear to be much else in this pack.
if I opened a Verdict I'd be so happy
REMEMBER FLUFFY, mercilessly slain by the bastard Useless Mancer
Fluffy, the cute and cuddly baloth beatstick of marshmellowy fluffyness and lolz, om-nom-noming Keeper's wicked soul; its insane, deadly amount of cuteness rips the fabric of reality to shreds, its pink, soft, round teeth dripping with honey, every breath spreading the repugnant smell of fresh flowers, this horrifying creature of destruction devastates Keeper by spreading its deadly, all-powerful fluff over the countryside, laying waste to dragon and furry bunny alike. It comes howling out of the east, an endless rattling and gnashing of teeth, a twisted grinding pull on the very fabric of reality threatening to consume body and mind alike in an endless glimmering pink torrent. Nothing is more terrible than the sun glittering on its teeth, save perhaps the light glancing off the oily tones of the sequins that cover its hotpants. Of course, there was that child who tried to eat Fluffy, mistaking him for a giant, walking piece of cotton candy. That child... is now the almighty leader of Fluffy, controlling his every move, sending him to devour the people that cross his path. And Keeper. Because we said so. Nothing can stop Fluffy's march to victory, spreading the sweet smell of strawberries where ever it lays its mighty paw. Followed by many jolly fairies singing joyful songs about Fluffy's cuddlyness, the baloth wanders the mountains of Zendikarland on a quest to share the love with Keeper, tough love that is...
Fluffy, we'll miss you friend. We'll miss you...

Really? I don't really see the greatness.
It's an Ox. In a PILLARFIELD. That's like, a field of frickin' PILLARS, but to this Ox it just looks like an ordinary field of grass - because he is so BADASS.

And the win condition itself is so mindblowingly difficult it seems like it was only made simply to fit the criteria.

Wrath is always good, in a new set it's always a safe bet.  Verdict
Tolkein was a jerk. Seriously, what DM sends 9 Wraith Lords at a Lvl 2 party of Halflings. The only 'correct' way to play D&D is by whatever method is making the group you have at that session, have the most fun.
I think the soul worn spirit is going to end up being pretty good in limited but the obvious choice is supreme verdict
Futile, since the pick is already decided, but I am not a fan of the sweepers!  If it's not that, is it Rites of Reaping?  I could be way off.
Supreme verdict is probably the choice, although it commits you to azorius to play it. I am very interested to see how dark revenant is in limited.
Verdict, but I don't think that locks us into Azorius. The pack is pretty weak and it's just the best card. I could definitely see switching colors with pick two and going a different route if an opportunity presents itself.
IYDDS, I would say that Rites is the only other option by a fair margin. I will, however, aggre with the Verdict that others have reached.

Like Lobster, I'm with you on the choices available, but can't disagree with the Verdict.  I like unblockable creatures too, but this one is not strong enough to be a plausible option to Rites, let alone Verdict.
Verdict.

If that wasn't in the pack, I would seriously consider Rites of reaping. There was a similar card in Invasion block(consume strength?) and that card was an absolute house. This is more expensive, and a sorcery, but with a bigger effect. It's likely worse than consume strength, but still very strong.
Supreme Verdict. Wraths are amazing, and I love playing them. Azorius can actually use Wraths to an even better effect with the detain mechanic too. All the uncommons in this pack seem pretty good.
Verdict.

Leeching Bite was also good. Instant speed and cheapness is incredibly important though, it allows you to use the cards for easy two for ones. I still think Rites of Reaping will prove itself to be pretty fine though, but don't expect it to play at all like those cards.
I think I would consider Revenant the second pick.  2/2 flyer that you can't get rid of.

Since the Rites is sorcery speed most of the time you'll just be using it as a Last Gasp I would think, unless you use the +3/+3 on an evasive guy (which the Golgari lack to some extent compared to the other guilds save Rakdos).  Time will tell.

Edit:  Maybe Soulsworn Spirit over Revenant, hard to tell.

I don't think Revenant is actually going to be that good.  If it was bigger or more defensive, it would be a house.  As is, if you ever have to use it for blocking, you're just screwed.
My take on the revenant is:

I would rather have a basic land. Seriously.
Preparing for the M14 Prerelease - New article up! IN THE TANK - my very own blog for rambling about Magic!
It's an evasive body for Rakdos decks that they can't really trade with, but maybe it's just too slow.
revenant is definitely playable, if it is a little bit underwhelming when you do.

anyway the pick is wrath, so you can sell it after the draft.
Verdict is a no brainer. Let's hope we hit either some good mana fixing or some good Azorius cards next.
Verdict seems like a clear choice, it will probably be the best P1P1 in most packs I imagine.

Like others with the same ability before it, it'll probably suffer from the same issue.  There are just going to be times where you wish it was a may ability.

Might be a bit committing this early, but a wrath is a wrath.
And I still dream of an Azorius/Izzet creatureless deck. Cool

Supreme Verdict

And, incidentally, Consume Strength was awesome. This new Ravnican version doesn't measure up.
D&D rules were never meant to exist without the presence of a DM. RAW is a lie.

Call of the Conclave
Rootborn Defenses
Stealer of Secrets
Keening Apparition
Dramatic Rescue

I was origionally going to go for the Stealer, but on second glance, let's go for Call of the Conclave dropping a 3/3 turn 2 and having a shot at a populate deck has it's appeal.

yep, CALL OF THE CONCLAVE for sure, if we already had enough targets id have said rootborn possibly but the token production isnt there yet
Pack seems pretty weak and Call seems like the obvious pick. Though I do think Keening Apparition will end up being pretty good.
I don't have a strong preference here. I suppose I'll have to read the set list to determine which type of deck you are meant to go for.
I'm going to head the Call to draft azorius/selesnya.

A drop of the eldrazi urine fell right in his eye. "Oh, man. Now I'm pissed too." As we were moving on, we were looking around on the innocent nature. Two baloths were doing it on the road so we had to make a little detour. The pools of piss were kinda unpleasant but at least it was warm so we had no trouble at night. "One gets used to piss running down your face you know." said my companion. "F'shizzle." answered I stoicly and kicked two rabbits, who were doing nasty things to each other's ass, in the ass. "Man one can't take a spit here without hitting some shamming animals." "Word. Zendikar sucks. Hope the eldrazi contribute a little to the population regulation." As my companion said that, a gigantic, 20 meters tall eldrazi slithered by. On it's arms and tentacles were remains of birds, rabbits, baloths, angels, planeswalkers, dragons, krakens and a few cities. We stood up and clapped loudly. "A few bitches less." (People don't get banned for such posts do they?)

Am I the only one? Looking over the recent threads debating the merits of "Belgium," the various ideas to "fix" England and other topics which concern European nations, I'm struck by how much I don't care what happens. Britain and Spain are, to me, completely inaccessible due to the Atlantic Ocean, not to mention volcanoes and socialism. I sound like I'm bashing European nations, and I guess I kind of am. If you enjoy living in France, Luxembourg, Poland or any other, older nation, that's fantastic. I just don't see why there's such a huge uproar about a volcano that is mostly affecting a niche group of people.

Hell, I don't even like that they printed Pillarfield Ox
I'm real happy for you, and I'mma let you finish, but pillarfield ox has one of the best pieces of art of all time. Of all time.
Really? I don't really see the greatness.
It's an Ox. In a PILLARFIELD. That's like, a field of frickin' PILLARS, but to this Ox it just looks like an ordinary field of grass - because he is so BADASS.

Finally, Master Yumyums just had probably the most boring, worthless card in the entire contest. Why would you need to give creatures -1/-0 on your turn? To beat them down with your nonflying blue aggro deck that plays a bad win condition card to win (and if you are playing the critters, why aren't you winning with them?!)? And the win condition itself is so mindblowingly difficult it seems like it was only made simply to fit the criteria.
Derivative Radial Tangent Calculation of Pure, Absolute, Utmost, Uncontestable and Utter Doom Newton's Second Law of Equations As an additional calculation to add to ~, reveal a Mathematical Equation from your hand, with a converted mana casting cost equal to a Prime Number. (Prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 13, 17...) ~ costs ƒ(x) = Σπ(δƒ(u)-ƒ(x)) if you're a fan of René Descartes in Facebook. ~ deals X damage to each creature your opponents control within a radius of X KM from ~, where X is the revealed Equation's converted mana cost. ~ deals Y damages to target player, where Y is the area of the Sphere (using the first 50 digits of pi as pi). ~ deals Z less damage, where Z is the distance in Lightyears from the centerpoint of the Sphere. Add up X, Y and Z and round it up to the closest number. Multiply the damage ~ would deal by m, where m is the number of multiples of that number. Calculate the first 50 Fibonaci numbers: Deal the difference between the 25-50th numbers, and the first 25 numbers. As long as the angular acceleration of an object t approaches maximum velocity relative to the cross product of a vector n and its bisector as the object passes through point Q at vector n's convergence in zero gravity, Disastrous Radial Tangent Calculation can't be countered. As long as you can do a geometric proof of anything on this card, target opponent must be doing one. Otherwise, he or she loses the game. (both games. you just lost the game.)
Call.  Like others have mentioned...

1: a 3/3 2-drop is quite strong.
2: it sets up the populate mechanic quickly with something worth copying.
yep, CALL OF THE CONCLAVE for sure, if we already had enough targets id have said rootborn possibly but the token production isnt there yet
