9/6/2012 Sealed Deck Builder

This thread is for discussion of this week's Sealed Deck Builder, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.
One of the trickier builds I think I have seen here.  3x Planar Cleansing and 4x Farseek make you want to go GW/x, but I didn't think that it ended up being good.  3 board clearers are fine if you have something to follow it up with, but the creatures aren't able to cause an opponent to have to overplay to beat you.

I thought this was a better build:

wow, 4 Farseek, an Evolving Wilds and tons of tokens...
My main win conditions are Bloodthrone VampireCrusader of Odric, and Hamletback Goliath.
I feel that there is puh-lenty of mana fixing here, and if I get into too much trouble, 3x Planar Cleansing?!? How insane is that?

One of the hardest builds yet. I don't know if this is right but this is what I came up with...

Well this was a tough build thatt didn' have a lot to build around other than the 4x Farseek.  It's not that great to  play 3 Planar Cleanse imho because by the time they would be useful your going to be so short on life it ins't funny.

So I went G/R splashing W/U for the 2 life linkers and the Oring  and Elephants.

İnteresting pool indeed. I tried WUr, 2 arctic avens may finish the game alone, I chose to put 2 planar cleansings, I dont know if it will work but this is surely fun Also if I can hold on until 6 mana planar cleansing and after that spelltwine may be a good win condition (2 talrands invocation maybe , OMG

5 colour,4 Farseek will ramp you into a Planar Cleansing, which will give you card advantage if you time them correctly. The black red deck is probably more consistent but this one will be more fun since it enables you to play the best cards in all colours

There are alot of ways to go with building this pool, 3xPlanar Cleansing is interesting as is 3xKrenko's command + Crusader of oderic but in the end I decided to jam all the removal I could then try to either race with flying lifelinkers or unblockables or just let a green creature get huge with a ring (or 2) and trample over

Probably not the best deck possible but damn I wanted to use dat triple Planar Cleansing and Quad Farseek . It's Naya Control, I guess.

This deck could easily have been five color green.

The pool had a lot of options so I looked first at finishers. Arctic Aven seems strong, as does any green creature plus the ring given enough time. I'm also a fan of Touch of the Eternal, in the right build. I think it is possible to force your opponent to overcommit and then planar cleanse. Anyway, this was my first attempt at a Bant control:

Naya "ramp"--idea is to hopefully use the O-ring, Safe Passage, and Spears to stay alive for big-creature beat-down.  Couldn't resist the idea of perfect-draw turn 5 or 6 Hamletback, followed by 6 saproling tokens and 6 +1/+1 counters to Hamletback.  A trample-ring, or a Serpent's gift on that sucker would be game-ending; likewise with the crusader.

Yeah, weird pool. Lots of removal but shy on ways of actually killing them. Talrands invocation and the avens was tempting in some kind of U/w build but I decided to go g/r splashing white just for o-ring and elephant. Figured I could chump/kill everything till I can put the ring on a goliath or a spider, or just beat down with weenies if they are looking slow. Here's the list

Wow, this was tough.  Triple Planar Cleansing is actually a bad thing to me.  It isn't a great card typically in sealed and almost never would you want multiples.  Then there was the other theme that almost was to me, 1/1 token generation.  I nearly went there with 5 different multi-token spells, but then there was no pumps and only 1 card (Crusader of Odric) that benefited from/enchanced the tokens.

Still with quad Farseek I really looked hard at multi-color options.... where was my Door to Nothingness or Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker

Also with the triple Ring of Kalonia (I see a theme here), I felt green had to be the core, so I built a G/w/b/r deck that almost was a 5-color guy, but trying to keep it trimmed down to 40 cards is hard.

I tried to avoid double color cards, especially in non-green, so I opted to not include Murder and Volcanic Geyser.  I also left out all three Krenko's Command because all those seemed to be were chump block fodder with no pumps or Arms Dealer  I did leave in the Captain's Call just beause I wanted some token generation to help push Crusader of Odric.  He was important to include because he is a non-green guy who really likes Ring of Kalonia.  The rings are the central theme to the deck concept.  I focused on Exhault for the non-green creatures to take advantage of the trample.

The deck looks a little creature thin at 11, but add in the two token spells and it pushes the count to 13, then you can almost reduce the decksize by 5 because the land-fetchers esentially do that, so now I have 13/35 creatures which is about the same as 15/40.  Also the land count is a bit low at 16 (15 really), but 4 spells have >3cc, so I think it should be ok.  Also the Farseeks should help find enough to help us.

It is important not to just burn through your Farseeks too fast as you want to be sure you get the right colors to use.

I really wanted to biuld arounf the 4 farsees, but I couldn't seem to fessible do it and run the 3 Planar Cleansings, and enough reliable threats for the win. Instead I had to bit the bullet and go for the W/U skies, with quad-wrath effects (if you count Spelltwine) which gives it the edge over all the other decks that all tend to over-commit. Plus this build only really need 1 flying treat on the field at a time. Which works in favour of an all wrath plan.

I did kind of go over board on the lands, but this deck has to hit 6 mana each game, with triple white. Maybe I could have cut a land. And then the field would stabalize itself. It's also worth noting that O-Ring is quite bad with Planar Cleasing as it will often give your oppenent back a threat. It's worth holding until post wrath, or sometimes to exile your own creature to just win post-wrath.

It's important to stop the ground beaters from getting to many early hits in, hence the Karken Hatchlings, and pysudo-Fog effects.

Well..I kind of just opted for a good ol' fashioned creature beatdown deck--just putting a ton of pressure on the opponent with an endless array of creatures.  Hopefully no one else will get 3 planar cleansings in their card pool  xD

Cherry picked the stuff that looked good and then checked for synergy.  Don't need 3 planar cleansings but 1 plus spelltwine is plenty, and lots of other targets for spelltwine as well.  Probably wins with evasion creatures.

4x Farseeks is just too hard to ignore: sooooo much fuuuuuun.  Along with 3x Planar Cleansing I decided to go with "Ramp->Blow up the Board->Land a threat" route.

I do admit though, that I like the R/B aggro/removal deck available in this pool too.  But tricolor just looks like too much fun.  I decided on Red for my third color to get the removal plus the fatty at the top end to take advantage of my ramp.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

Decided to build around Spelltwine, Augur and Crusader. With 5 sorcery's that make creatures feel I have a decent chance to give those cards extra value. Did not play the planar cleansing as triple color is very hard to cast and I do not want to be clearing the board I want to be establishing control with creature count. Splashed in red for some more removal.

Current Decks Standard: Red Deck Wins Old Decks Standard: Get Er' Dungrove Top 8's: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=1062537 http://sales.starcitygames.com//deckdatabase/displaydeck.php?DeckID=47431 IMAGE(http://www.wizards.com/magic/images/whatcolor_isred.jpg)

Went the removal/ramp approach--all the Farseeks made it too good to pass up, and with an evolving wilds, makes a three color deck a lot more palatable.

i liked the power of blue/black has some removal and lots of threats and lifelink from multiple evasive sources to win races

Green-Red this time. I have no experience using Farseek, but it seems doable to go without. Was hard enough not to go over 40 as it is (my inexperience showing, I suppose). Started with the rings and the goliath and went from there. The spells to be supporting the creatures.

I went super greedy.  This is one of the hardest pools they could have come up with i think.  the ability to completely transform this during sideboarding is its biggest strength.  archetypes include 5 color green (above) taking advantage of harbor bandit type cycle of creatures,  exalted/token/crusader build, and super control cleansing build.  i'm pretty sure this pool would crash and burn.
