Deck planning web tool -- try it!

Hi folks!  I've put together a little deck planning tool for Duels 2013 that runs in a browser.  You can give it a spin at:

happypluto.com/~misterp/wiz/planner/

The tool does NOT integrate with the game (even the Steam version). It's just a place to plan out builds.

A summary:

  • Includes the 10 base decks and the 5 decks from the first expansion

  • Create multiple custom libraries for each deck

  • Copy/paste your deck builds to the forums, with or without formatting

  • Copy/paste a "library code" from a deck on the forums to instantly build it in the planner

  • Sample hands

  • Printable "RapidRebuild" instructions give the most efficient way to assemble your custom library in-game

  • Cards can be grouped by Type (i.e. creature or spell), Cost, or Purpose (e.g. removal, draw, mill, etc.)

After building your library at the web site, you can copy the listing to these forums in two formats. For example, here's the starting configuration of one of the expansion decks. I've grouped the cards by "Purpose".

Please reply with any issues you have, or general comments.

Thanks!

P.S.  This was a little project for me to learn web browser programming, so the craftsmanship isn't of professional quality. The main issue to be aware of is that it won't work on older browsers, and probably won't do well on mobile browsers. These Windows browsers work:  Internet Explorer 9, Firefox (latest version), and Chrome (latest version). It seems to run on Mac Safari, but it hasn't been tested there. Older Internet Explorer versions won't work.

Known issues

  • As mentioned above, older or mobile browsers are unlikely to work.

Release history
2012 09 01 (v59)
- First release
2012 09 01 (v60)
- Moved card image above histogram (requested by eaglenitewillow)
- Added horizontal spaces to forum table export (requested by Stray_Goat)
- Fixed bug where CMC of 10 showed up as two symbols in forum tables
2012 09 01 (v61)
- Forum tables use square instead of round bullet character for card count
2012 09 01 (v63)
- Figured out how to shrink line height of forum tables, much better looking now
2012 09 02 (v64)
- Incorrect card values reported by coldmist, felbatista, and Schwarzwaldz -- thank you.
- Added total card counts to forum export
2012 09 03 (v65)
- Added Trample category to Garruk deck
- Fixed Stabbing Pain cost -- thanks coldmist
2012 09 03 (v67)
- Grouping by 'Purpose' now orders the groups in a more useful way, rather than in alphabetical order of purpose
2012 09 05 (v71)
- Added menu commands to add or remove all cards from library (requested by Ranccor)
- Added library code feature
2012 09 07 (v75)

- Expansion 1 decks no longer marked (unreleased).
2012 09 27 (v80)
- Chrome and Safari now have the brown mouseover border in the correct place (fixed in WebKit 537.4, so some browsers may not have it yet)
2012 09 28 (v81)
- Fixed bug with pasted library codes: any card not in the pasted library could not be added later on
2012 11 02
- Spoilers for deck pack 1 from Top Tier Tactics.
2012 12 01
- Added land count feature for 2-color decks
- Spoilers for deck pack 2.
2012 12 06
- Sample hand feature
2012 12 14
- Color intensity feature
- Now using smiley version of X mana symbol in forum tables (was trying to avoid mixing mc tags and smileys, but decided to do it anyway).

2013 07 12
- New 2014 edition with several new features

This is amazing! Thanks!
I like how the backgrounds change colour depending on what colour the deck is, I've never actually seen that before as far as Online deck builders go and adds a pretty neat aesthetic feel.
My only gripe is that the tables are probably a little bit too thin since some of the cards e.g. Master of the Wild Hunt seems to only just be fitting on but otherwise this is pretty damn good.

Just a test deck I made, so I can see how it looks like in spoiler tags.

I like this too except for one thing:
When you put pointer over the cards, it shows the actual card on lower left.  If you are at the top of your list, you can not see it.  Is there anyway you can move up some?  Like right below the picture of the deck you are currently in.  Basically swap the spots with where it show the curve with it.
Other than that, I love it.  Gives me the time to still do some deck editing while my kids have the tv. Which is something I have been looking for.

Thanx MMP

I had the same problem, best way around it is to switch the card order. Either to cost, purpose or type, chances are it will be lower down on one of them. Best I have, sorry.

I tried to build a Aura deck around hexproof, indestructible, and Pariah. The idea is to put all 3 on a single creature. If it's done, then the only things that can counter it will be hard dealt with.

Don't know if it really works yet, but it should be fun.
@MysteriousMisterP, that's a great piece of programming. Thank you! I like the 'intermedia z-pattern' in animation.js Oh, and the search for 'stackoverflow avni yayin rob w getboundingclientrect' - what _isn't_ stackoverflow good for?

-- Δ

The planner has been updated according to requests here:

  • The card image now appears above the histogram. (I had designed around a 1280x1024 screen, but I guess some folks are running smaller than that.)

  • I've added some horizontal space around the entries in the forum tables. Unfortunately I can't easily tighten up the vertical space to make the tables look more like they do in the planner. (Note: libraries already posted to the forums will, of course, not automatically update to the new formatting.)

  • (EDIT) Later same day: figured out how to make the forum tables look much better -- different card count bullet, and tighter vertical spacing.

@daimonos Thanks for the compliments, but please be aware that I was learning JavaScript while writing this, so many things are done in ugly ways

So, basically you created a deck builder superior in every way to DotP's deck builder.

Remember that I have the enormous advantage that I can require 1280x1024 resolution, a mouse, and a keyboard.

Stainless has to make something that works at 640x480 with only a gamepad.

It is frustrating, though, to use the PC version but still be constrained by the console limitations.
I am literally using your deck planner right now, on my PS3 console, with my PS3 controller, at 640x480.

I gotta say it's pretty cool. Good work!
For the record, it looks great on my Macbook running Chrome.  Not problems at all for me on this format that I've seen yet.

Edit: Feature request. I think you need an ADD ALL/REMOVE ALL button at the top of both sides.  In case someone wants to throw everything in and work from there or start at nothing and go from there.
Just beautiful - it looks neat, functional, un-bloated and runs like a dream for me, windows 8, IE10 and Firefox(latest) both.

If that is your "just learning" pet project, I wanna see what you come up with in a year!

The adverts said I was going to team up with Chandra and we were going to kick butt and chew bubblegum across the planes on a revenge campaign against some... guy she knew I guess? Who's Ramaz anyway? What do I get instead? I beat Chandra like 2 minutes in with a mono-green stompy thing Garruk gave me (why does he keep giving all these new planeswalkers his deck) and then I spent like 5 hours jumping from plane to plane picking up random nicknacks for her mantlepiece while she sits back back doing her nails or something. I was thrown in jail! I got hit by a Roil Storm twice! Do you know how many rats are on Ravnica, Chandra? All of them! All of the rats! All of the rats eating me!

Then we go kick her Ex's bearded-screaming-butt and what does she do to help? Nothing! She throws of the occasional fire ball and spends her time trying not to freeze to death. You should have worn pants Chandra. While we're on the subject what happened to your shoes? You had like Steelies on. Steelies are cool. Now your running around with stupid boots with like 5-inch heels? Thats not appropriate footware for Planeswalking! That's not appropriate footware for normal walking! At least Liliana is doing it for the whole 'evil is sexy' thing and can summon undead to carry her when she breaks her ankle. What are you going to do ride a Phoenix? Its made of fire! You'll fall right through! Man I should have gone Planeswalking with Liliana - yeah she'd crack my head open with a rock 5 minutes in and raise my corpse to serve her but at least we could have gone dancing!

Coldmist, thank you so much! I was going to ask for help on this later, but you beat me to it! I knew that Excel's autocomplete probably burned me a few times when I typed in the cards, but I didn't have the stomach to go back and proofread 633 entries. Your reports are fixed, so refresh your browsers everybody--apologies to those who have posted incorrect deck lists because of this.

On the subject of forum help, there are some things I'd appreciate kind souls checking on.

  1. If you spot any other card errors after coldmist's thorough examination, please report them. (When the expansion is released, I'd also appreciate a note if the datamined card lists turn out to be incorrect.)

  2. On the first day of release I made some tweaks to the table format for forum library posting, one of which was using a black square character ■ instead of the small round bullet to show the card count. The square looks much nicer, but I want to be sure that everyone on every browser and operating system can see it correctly in the forums. An online testing tool seems to show that it displays fine on windows, linux, and mac. I'd like folks to look at the first post in this thread and verify that the squares show up in the table under the following systems:  Android, iOS, console browsers, and anything else that you might use to view a web page.

While I'm here, let me plug the RapidRebuild feature since it may not occur to folks to try it. It creates a list that makes it fast and accurate to switch the game to a library you've created. On the PC, I push the game (in windowed mode) off screen a little so I can see the browser, and then it's quite quick to use the arrow keys and enter to swap cards in and out.

Please keep posting your corrections, suggestions, and comments--thanks.

EDIT: thanks felbatista for Godhead of Awe correction -- fix uploaded!

The cost of Godhead of Awe is incorrect too. The card is U/W, not G/W. Nice work, btw.

WotC doesn't care about flavor. Their forum is the only place where an ORC can kill a troll...

Well done - great work - thanks for the very helpful tool!

@Robvalue - can I suggest this is added to the Useful Topics post?

Edit: is it possible to copy builds to the forums without having to manually insert the [c]s and [mcs]?  Apologies if I am being thick...
Xathrid Gorgon's cost is off. It's 5BB instead of 5B
felbatista and Schwarzwaldz, thank you for the corrections.  Darned Excel...

The codes are already added when you use the Copy to Forums menu command, so you shouldn't have to do anything other than copy and paste.  For example:

"Unlikely to win" library

for Ancient Wilds (Yeva): 2 picks, 10 cards

Let me know if that doesn't clear things up.

Perfect.  All clear. Many thanks again!
I found another error. Stabbing Pain lists the cost as BR, the correct cost is B.
Not sure if anyone else tried it, but i noticed that if I try to do the list so it comes up like this:

2x Counterspell
2x Mind Sculpt

it comes up on here like this: 2x Counterspell  2x Mind Sculpt.

Not that it is a big deal or anything, I was just wondering if it was supposed to look like that when it gets to the forums.  When you pick how you want it to be, it does it right on the right side of it, but not when you have to copy it before coming here.  I like doing it the fancier looking way myself, it was just something that I noticed when I tried it.

All in all though, you did a great job MMP.

The forums do strange things to the spacing sometimes, adding or removing line breaks. (There's a note about this in the known issues list above.) Unfortunately all I can suggest is that you try repasting the output, and maybe avoid the preview post feature, so the forum software has fewer chances to scramble things. It does work sometimes, e.g. in the first post you can see it the way it's supposed to be.

P.S. coldmist I fixed your latest typo discovery earlier today; thanks again.

No problem

Btw, for crosswinds, Spiketail Hatchling is categorized as a creature while Spiketail Drake is categorized as control. Not sure if this was intended or not, I just think they should be in the same category, whether they're both control or both creature.

The spiketail would be considered control because you can counter with it, so I think that is why he did that.
That's true of both, but the body on the drake is much more substantial.

I don't actually have that much experience with the game, so I was sort of uncertain whether Spiketail Hatchling really had much of an influence on your opponent. Now that I've played more, I think you're right and it does qualify as a nice control card in the early game, so I've just recategorized it per your suggestion.

The planner is only 2 days old, so I think it's still OK to be making tweaks like this, since people haven't gotten used to the way things are categorized.

For the expansion, I had to totally guess what would be appropriate categories since I don't play paper Magic anymore and these cards are unfamiliar to me -- I may have to shuffle the categories for the expansion decks after they're released and I see how the decks play.

Thank you for your feedback.

When copying to the forums, the table format HTML does not seem to work in PMs (the plain format works fine).

Not a major problem of course and not sure if there is an easy fix, but thought you should know.

Keep up the good work mate!

I just took a look at this.  The PM interface is modifying the angle brackets used in HTML tags so that you can actually type angle brackets in your message. The forum post interface does not do this, which lets you paste HTML but means that typing angle brackes might screw up your post.

If you go to the HTML view in the PM (use the "HTML" button in the toolbar) and paste the table text there, you will see the formatted table when you update and return to the PM.

It seems that the PM won't convert the card and manacost forum tags while you are composing the PM. I just sent you a test message (no need to reply) and the card and mana symbols did appear when I looked at my sent messages. I guess you just have to be careful to get the tags right in a PM, since you can't preview them as far as I can tell.

Hope that helps.
Got it.  Makes sense.  Using the HTML view and then updating works.

I responded to your PM flagging a separate issue about formatting in PMs.
