This thread is for discussion of magicthegathering.com's Magic Arcana, Card of the Day, and Daily Decks features for the month of September, 2012.
Cool trailer, but if my opinion counts for anything, PLEASE suggest marketing stop labeling things "My {noun}," implying the consumers have ownership or control over it. Seems nearly every other marketing department does it and I'm pretty sure no one's falling for it, it just smacks of insincerity and unsubtle manipulation. I believe that most Magic players are of above average intelligence, simply due to the nature of the game, and that they can see through the half-hearted grab for an emotional connection. It's the greatest game ever created, we aren't gonna suddenly stop playing or buying less product just because you guys don't mimic the advertising formula of every other company in America.

The visuals were utterly beautiful, though, and Jace, Narrative Sculptor was not entirely punchable.
The trailer was extremely dull apart from the art, which we'll eventually see on its own.  Jace's ramblings don't say anything, making the whole video something of a waste.  I'd have been happier if you'd just replayed the original Ravnica trailer.

Unleash is a spectacularly boring mechanic.  So much for me liking the Rakdos at all.  Also, in the Mechanics of RTR article, there's an error with regard to scavenge:
You can't activate a scavenge ability unless you control a creature you can target with it.

This is untrue according to the reminder text of Scavenge, which says "target creature", not "target creature you control".  It is extremely important to know whether you can use scavenge on an opponent's creatures with Unleash to prevent them from blocking.

As far as the benefit of the rest of Magic is concerned, gold cards in Legends were executed perfectly. They got all the excitement a designer could hope out of a splashy new mechanic without using up any of the valuable design space. Truly amazing. --Aaron Forsythe's Random Card Comment on Kei Takahashi

It strongly implies that some non-guilded entity is scheming and directly manipulating all the guilds. This is different from Ravnica block, in which only some of the guilds were scheming and others tried to stop it.

Agreed.  And what's with him repeating "activities" over and over again?  Somebody go get him a thesaurus!

Yeah, it's setting up the story well enough. Is it Nicol Bolas again

Jace speaks like William Shatner aged 17. I don't think that's necessarily a great thing.

Not Nicol Bolas this time

Pretty much agree with tehbeast here: the marketing slogan is just horrible and feels blatantly manipulative.  But also that the visuals were beautiful and that Jace was bearable too.
pretty embarrassing that mtg.com would mix up the guilds on the booster pics.  Boros is in Gatecrash, not RTR. ...so, with that information, we can assume the last booster is in fact Azorius, not Boros.

silly editors.
I love the G/W wolf run decklist. I often play similiar G/W decklists. It has 23 rares and 10 mythics main deck but at least it looks to be an excitingly fun deck if you can assemble those cards.
Don't be too smart to have fun
I always feel they choose subpar art for boosters.
Interdasting. So the Prerelease cards are the same as the Intro Pack frontcards. That's certainly a different marketing strategy.

It's actually just an okay Mono-Black Control. Make room for more lands and it would be awesome.
That's the first time I've seen a Land be the foil of an intro pack, even if it does turn into a creature.

It also affects their rarity. But who doesn't mind free rares anyway :D
It would be cool if Selesnya came with the token. I WANT TO SEE THAT TOKEN.
You know, I'm sure Carnival Hellstead is good and all, but I was shocked to see it was a rare. I'm even more shocked to see it as a marquee intro pack/prerelease rare. I mean, compare this thing to the uncommon Bull Cerodon. Pretty comparable cards (and heck, I'd rather have the Cerodon).

This continues to suggest there is a distinct power dampening occurring. It is consistent, rather, that comparable cards should have different rarities, promoting the "strength" of Bull Cerodon to rare.
"Possibilities abound, too numerous to count." "Innocent, unbiased observation is a myth." --- P.B. Medawar (1969) "Ever since man first left his cave and met a stranger with a different language and a new way of looking at things, the human race has had a dream: to kill him, so we don't have to learn his language or his new way of looking at things." --- Zapp Brannigan (Beast With a Billion Backs)
Players undervalue First Strike, development overvalues it.
It would be cool if Selesnya came with the token.

I came here to say this, pretty much. If I was a newer player buying this and then I found out at least one token wasn't included....I'd be disappointed.
I want the coloring book! I guess I'll have to make my own.

So... the prerelease card was demoted from mythic to rare, and now it's just the useless rare already in the intro packs? If this is followed by a MSRP price increase for boosters, I may actually just sit this prerelease out too.

I know I'm definitely in the minority here, but I can enjoy RtR just fine online only. Paying $30 for a lottery + a janky rare doesn't seem worth it, even if I "choose" my guild. At least with the Mirrodin Beseiged prerelease, I was excited to bring home a good mythic even if I did open chaff. I don't understand why wizards keeps trying to replicate that experience and keeps falling short for me. Maybe I expect too much since I thought they figured it out already.
That Nicky B. is pretty friggin awesome looking, but when I saw the Jace outline picture today my only thought was:  "I can only hope that if there was a winning Jace picture that the inside of Jace's cape looks like Miranda Deegan's when she casts a planar banishment spell:"

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

MaRo: I redesigned him while the effect was on the stack.

If Vraska was Golgari, she would meet all the requirements for a watermark described by Mark.

@ mrpiddle

So Hypersonic Drogon is a "Janky, Useless Rare"?  I do agree that the Prerelease promo shouldn't be the same card as a theme deck rare of the set.

@Senyuno

Planeswalkers transcend set affiliations.  You notice that Koth didn't have a Mirran watermark despite being and joining the Mirrans.  I think there was an article that said something about it but I don't want to dig it up at the moment.

@Symokoto

Art Fight: Ravnica doesn't require a DCI number (I don't believe).  It requires a facebook account.  Why it should I really wish I knew because I DON'T use facebook.   Looks like I am going to have to make an account for the express purpose of doing this thing.

Also, you can just go to your local game store that holds an FNM and get a DCI number without any real issue (other than gas mileage).  You don't really need to do much else with it.  In that way it is accessible to everyone.

--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

With every one of his creatures being an incredible rare (Daily Deck of 9/10)

Nitpicking time, but Eternal Witness was made in the before-time when WotC made exciting creatures be at common & uncommon with some frequency.  Understandable that the writer assumed she was a rare, though, she'd probably be one now.

Yep, that's what I thought. I wonder if sales will suffer? I get the impression a lot of people aren't that excited by lands. I wonder if a land that makes an 8/8 will be better.

I do love how that land is sooo good with Populate. Which also means that including just one of the token probably won't be enough

That's Bloodthirst: Petrified Wood-Kin -- "Bloodthirst X (This creature enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it, where X is the damage dealt to your opponents this turn.)"

Maybe, maybe not. It's VERY similar to Bloodthirst but includes all life lost, not just damage. Admittedly, it would be rather disappointing if it did turn out that the Rakdos mechanic was almost just a very similar riff on Bloodthirst, which was Gruul last time.
