I just got home from LARPing. i'm not the only one here who does that, right?

Not into it myself, but much like liver and onions, never tried it.

Yes. Yes you are. LARP is one step below RPG players and only two steps above Furries. This has been well documented.
Here are the PHB essentia, in my opinion:
  • Three Basic Rules (p 11)
  • Power Types and Usage (p 54)
  • Skills (p178-179)
  • Feats (p 192)
  • Rest and Recovery (p 263)
  • All of Chapter 9 [Combat] (p 264-295)
A player needs to read the sections for building his or her character -- race, class, powers, feats, equipment, etc. But those are PC-specific. The above list is for everyone, regardless of the race or class or build or concept they are playing.

Nah.  Furries are over LARPers.
Another day, another three or four entries to my Ignore List.
During a recent session of our Fourth Edition campaign, the dungeon master informed the party that we had sighted a group of larpers dressed as dwarves. We immediately attacked.

Nothing against LARPing, and forgive me for derailing, HOWEVER I never had an opportunity to express how disappointed I was with "Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks" by Ethan Gilsdorf. The story of how he got drawn into D&D as an escape from his unfortunate home situation as a child really moved me. I purchased the book and was surprised that about 90% of the it turned out to be about his experiences of hanging out with and participating in LARPing.

To OP in the words of Jerry Seinfeld "not that there's anything wrong with that!"
Nah.  Furries are over LARPers.

Yeah, it goes:

RPGers
Furries
LARPers
Erotic Furries
Bronies

Right? ;)

"My flying carpet is full of elves."

I used to Live Action Role Play.  If you haven't tried it you should.  It changed the way I thought about role playing.  I had many a happy time at Treasure Trap, anyone remember that?  I particularly remember a situation where a party of 9 people were held at bay by 3 orcs in a dark room making the noise of 14.  You also learnt that the simplest puzzel, the type of thing that would be obvious to the slowest of table top D&Der suddenly become a lot harder just by the simple fact of making people run and fight off monsters at the same time ;)

RPGers
Furries
LARPers
Erotic Furries
Bronies

Furries functionally equivalent to Erotic Furries

To OP, I would like to point out that many of us are having a bit of fun at your expense but it is in no way personal. If you enjoy something, don't let anything that anyone on an internet forum says deter you from having fun. #lifeisshort
Pfft. you guys can make fun of me all you want. I don't care one bit. Though, I do highly recommend LARPing. It's intense. I came home sore and bruised.

We're not laughing at you. We're laughing toward you.

But seriously... In the D&D world, LARp is a small subset, but not an insignificant one.

There are also divisions and/or variations of LARPing. Battle re-enactment (further divided by which war), battle revision (where the victory is not pre-determined by history), paint-ball and air-soft, Capture-the-Flag, and cowboys-and-indians or cops-and-robbers are all variations of LARP. But most folks would not call these things LARP, reserving that term for medieval fantasy battle. I would say that in such a case, "most folks" are wrong.

When I say LARP, I guess I really should clarify. We just use Nerf swords and what not to fight. We'll use paper wads as various "spells", but we don't dress up or get into character. It's just a way to test our sword skills. We'll do rounds like Capture the flag, Army vs. army, Battle Royale, free-for-all, and defend the fort.

The challenge to device a cunning and savage mockery of larping vanished when you published your "star wars kid" tribute movie ;)

That video was my friend's creation. i only organized the LARP, but I did film him in the end tournament.

Why do people feel the need to rank other's geekery (geekitude? nerdosity?).  The point is that people should feel comfortable in doing what they enjoy and not be judged by others and ostersized for their particular proclivities.

I've never had the time or opportunity to join a LARP, but I wish I had, and fear that it may be too late now.

I can also say that I just don't get the point of comic books. On entertainment for my dollar, story value, character development etc, I'd much rather read a novel.  And for a visual story, I'd much rather watch a movie or tv show.

So, where does that put me in your ranking?

I was going to post something similar.  Then I noticed that when he said LARPing he didn't mean Live Action Role Playing he meant running about with Nerf Weapons.

Nerf Weapons!

Lowest of the low!

Sorta ;)

Edwarddarkforest,

I've LARPed twice at GenCon but I've avoided the "physical" LARPs like a plague. I'm in my mid 50's and going toe-to-toe with a 20 something kid wielding a sword (I don't care if it's Nerf) who hates his dad does not appeal to me for some reason.  I enjoy the more acting improv type LARPs. They're cool. Too bad I couldn't squeeze one in at GenCon this year.

Agreed. The LARPS where you , for example, stay at a hotel for a weekend and have to RP appeals to me, not combat LARPs.

They both have their appeal.

When I was going to WWU, we had a Vampire: The Masquerade game on Fridays, and Werewolf: The Appocalypse on Saturdays; the former is far more social roleplaying while in the later, multiple combats are inevitable if not required. The most memorable sessions were where we did the opposite (fast paced vampire combats, and subdued, tragic, werewolf roleplay)

Hmmm...glad I did not get this book when I was tempted to, then. This is one reason why so many people who don't understand RPGs think that it involves dressing up and acting out.

I think with the right group, LARPing may be fun. But it is as different from tabletop RPGs and an MMO is (which is to say, as many differences as similarities).  Of course, I am old school and consider a "gamer" to be an tabletop gamer. Someone who plays video games and consoles is not, IMHO, a gamer...they are "someone who plays video games"  :-)

Agreed. In reference to the book, I just simply didn't enjoy reading chapter after chapter about every LARPING subculture he could find to participate in.
WITFH is this? I dont recognize most of these posters, and the ones I do recognize I dont ussually see in the Tavern. Did this recently get moved here or something? The Tavern is now the place for LARPing!? I thought gaming talk was supposed to be forbidden here? LARPing doesnt count as gaming?

Not the only Live Action Role Player: Here is the plans to my steam Kolben (for druid/fighters capable of using a heat metal spell to turn water to steam and fire a projectile...

You can get one made from brass and wood - just scale it to your need. Of course if you want to mass produce and sell them we will need to talk about 10% of profits being posted to me once a year.

LARPers aren't gamers, they're targets.

Depends. Does mock combat, sans RP, spells, and other RPG traditions count?

My sentiments exactly.

Hey, didn't RH make a thread about LARPing? Of course it was a very RH scenario, but still, I think it counts.

RH LARPing!? ohhh yeah yeah, the Osama Bin Laden one. Im not sure that would really count, then we may as well say paintballing is LARP, and Laser Tag, well, hmmmmm, yeah I guess it does count, Live Action, and you are assuming a role, so yeah, it counts.

Well you got the live action thing down, but what about the role? Do you assume a different identity? do you have every one call you Slayer or something?

What do you mean by mock combat (Ive probably already asked you this)? Like foam swords, or real ones but you just try really hard not to kill each other (thats the way real men do it)?

Mock combat is oxymoron, no?

Not really but  most of the OTTers have the "House of Trolls" thing in their sig. You know, like Front Door of The House of Trolls.
