I read the article, and it looks like fun.

However, I looked at the pre-gens, and only a few of the characters even get a daily power?  Why is that?

Most (all) of the classes are Essentials subclasses, which have varying degrees of complexity. The classes without Daily powers have other bonuses that increase their effectiveness in every encounter. they only start to feel the "pain" from lack of Daily powers if there are only one or two encounters per adventuring day.
