B/R has the most aggressive curve and nice removal options. With both Liliana's Shade and Dragon Hatchling, I didn't think the Hellion Crucible was worth the "colorless mana" drawback.

I initially was trying to cram together a green / red / white deck and then after reviewing the curve decided black / red was more consistent.  I cut one of the scorpions to make room for the Hellion Crucible.

My deck is an exercise in greediness.

Clearly Nighthawks and Bats are Plan A.  The admittedly greedy Titanic Growth splash allows for massive lifegain swings with the Nighthawk, functions as a Lava Axe, and helps defend against damage-based forms of removal (which the Nighthawks are susceptible to).  Pushing anything at all through (hopefully Fire Elemental and the Hellion token) with Arms Dealer and Battle Jester forms Plan B.  The difficult to block Muckwader, Bloodthrone Vampire and Liliana's Shade provide a weak Plan C.  I know I cut the Essence Drain; I figured this build was already being greedy so I went with the Turn to Slag since it can deal with larger things, rings, and activates the Jester.

Just another comment about the pool in general: Hydra and Silklash Spider are both amazing green cards.  But they both need double green.  If you do attempt to splash them, you don't want the Farseek, since it can't find forests.  Take the Ranger's Path.

I prefer GBr. Obviously B is the backbone of the deck. I prefer G over R, splashing 2 Searing Spear might be enough.

Does nobody else like the thought of the blue? The evasion this deck runs is great. As we see, the black creatures are fairly awesome, and the blue offers unsummons if we need to save Nighthawks from removal or reuse Bloodhunter Bat's ability, as well as the obvious use of bouncing opponents' creatures. This build also gains fully powered Harbor Bandit, another very good clock. Add in some curve filler and creatures to swap with Switcheroo and you have what I think is a pretty sweet BU sealed deck. Oh, and I chose not to splash anything (even though Spears and Pacifisms were tempting) because I really just want to hit Nighthawks on turn 3 like 100% of the time and I have 2 double blue cards also.

Grixis FTW! Just hope to not get mana screwed, though x.x

So...

Green has Hydra, Spider, Prey Upon
Red has two spears, arms dealer, turn to slag
Black has two nighthawks, two bats, essence drain
White has two pacifisms, divine verdict, one ring and (if you like that) a touch of the eternal.
Blue has leviathan, switcheroo, two encrusts, two rings

Very hard to distinguish between them in all honesty. Depends on your strategy. I think you could go:

UW Defensive / mill
RB Sligh aggro
RG Stompy
BG Control

First instinct was to try out RB sligh aggro, because the life gain cards are so good for tempo races

Tried to go RG but there just wasn't enough playables.

Ok Green as obvious due to Hydra+Spider.  Red with 2 Searing Spears and Arms Dealer + Krenko was an easy obvious splash due to having a Farseek and the Dual land.  2 Primal Clays just go into any deck really as they are sweet 3/3 smashers or 2/2 flyers, or if you really need it nice 1/6 Walls.  Splashed Blue for Switcharoo + 2 Vedalkens for a alternate win method not to mention getting rid of some of there threats.  Only wet 16 land as nothing higher than 5 casting cost and pretty good fixers.

Went for an aggressive (is there any other?) red/black deck, though blue/black was also very interesting. Hellion Crucible would most likely get cut though, if turns out getting double black mana is a problem.

I went for UB, although BR looked good too.  My real concern is having very few two-drops.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.

All I'm saying is, I don't really see how she goes around petrifying swords and boots and especially mirrors. How the heck does she beat a Panoptic Mirror? It makes no sense for artifacts either. Or enchantments, for that matter. "Well, you see, Jimmy cast this spell to flood the mountain, but then the gorgon just looked at the water really hard and it went away."
I opened this up and did a few sorts/scans and got very excited when I saw two Vampire Nighthawk which is one of the best uncommons in the set.  I then saw the in color Harbor Bandit and started having visions of a nasty U/B deck... then I saw the creature options in U.... hmm, that isn't good, but if you can get the right U spells.... hmm, those were lacking too.  Then I looked over at greens creatures, thinking Green is very strong in M13... WOW, that was a short list.  They were all very playable, but sadly lacking in quantity.  So I went to white, knowing the W/B Exhaulted theme is very strong in M13... hmm, lacking those too eh....  Thankfully Red seems to have both lots of creatures, nothing special, but then Red is pretty think on quality creatures in M13, but the Goblin tribe thing can work, and we do have an Arms Dealer and thankfully 2 Searing Spear, so it looks like B/R is the way to go this week.  Too bad, since we have 3 rings and none in color.

In the end I found the pool was disappointing after I was so excited at first.  But still this is MTG and the best deck will always lose to a solid deck if the pilot of the solid deck is the better player.  This is definitely a fast deck with some mid-game but very little late game.  Need to push hard and control the board.

I left out Dragon Hatchling because I don't want to have to use mana each turn to pump it, I want to be playing 1-2 non-lands per turn as often as possible and any spare mana already has other targets.  Not to mention keeping mana up for instants on their turn.  The Duress is in the deck more for the look at their hand aspect than anything else, discard will be bonus.

Last card in deck was Harbor Bandit which almost made me want to add an island for the rare chance of getting to use him to full potential.  but liked 2/2 over 1/3 deathtouch for damage and already have 6 4cc creatures.

Without a doubt Black is the strongest color, originally i was drawn to blue ( go figure ) and a controling deck. then stormtide as a finisher. but once i saw the black pool and the red pool it was an easy choice.   The Crucible is worth playing in a spell slot with the bonus of more consistentcy in your land drops.      there are 4 removal spells and several deathtouch creatures that can act as removal themselves. Cower in fear can be removal and or a combat trick and the arms dealer is more removal.
With this much removal it should be easy to push a threat through unless they kill your threats but you have regeneration on your muckwader so that wont work.  The battle jesters are also a consistent way to push through a stalemate and win a race.   All in all I would say Lilianna's sahde is the wekest link, she can be a finisher but shes not fabulous.

I just think 18 lands is better than 17 with Hellion Crucible

This deck really wants to play green, but I believe it's better to keep the deck consistent.  The powerful green cards require 2G, but the rest of green is severely lacking.  This deck can win without Primordial Hydra, especially with the two Nighthawks and good removal.

Looking over the cards, Black is an obvious must, but I became intrigued with possibly stallin out with blue, using some of blacks nastiness to complement the blue here. Seemed to have some nasty end game shenanigans tbh.

I'm new to deckbuilding, so I'm looking for pointers/critique. I need to go back and read the other posts in this forum to see what I missed in black that made it so popular. I guess I got seduced by the big green rares and thought that blue's control would back them up?

Because I love me a sweet control deck.  Win cons are the evasion creatures, or if that doesn't work its to bring out Stormtide Leviathon to lock down the board.  The Vedalken Entrancers also kills a guy real quick.  The format doesn't have many flyers that can survive a Searing Spear so I think this deck would be pretty darn sweet.  The plan is to control the board with the Scorpion and Nighthawks and Horned Turtles while you deck them out or just play Stormtide Leviathon and just win agaisnt non-flyer decks.

Yeah I like 18 lands with the crucible too

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."
