7/26/2012 Sealed Deck Builder

This thread is for discussion of this week's Sealed Deck Builder, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.

This was a really fun pool despite the lack of good rares. Ignore the Elephant and Aven, go for green's big creatures combined with blue's Switcheroos and Archaeomancers and there's a solid Roaring Primadox engine to be found here.

Exalted on Tormented Soul or a flier for the win. Sands of Delirium can't be left out, it wins on its own.

I think the two obvious choices were white-blue exalted control, or black-white exalted aggro.

I would have gone with the BW version because of its ability to run over slow decks.

Whilst I think that one of the exalted decks was the way to go, you rarely get a chance to play more than two colors effectively. I would have liked to try this Bant build as well, because of all the funky interactions...

In theory, the deck could combine switcheroo with trading post to steal creatures for 0/1 goats, combine Healer of the Pride with Trading Post to make free goats and gain a life each time, which could power up the griffins, recur elvish visionary or bond beetle with the primadox, switcheroo a primadox against a player with only one creature, then get the primadox back next upkeep, recur spells with primadox + archaeomancer, or just - ya know - win with a couple of fatties which you got down a turn or two early.

Green&White combo was my choice this week again.  No obvious bombs but some nice combos if you look closely.

This deck has possibilities for some nice combos. Roaring 4/4 green guy could bounce the Bond Beetles each turn to pump another creature to huge proportions quite easily.  Not to mention the Life Gain from Healer of the Pride each time.  Healer also combos with the Trading Post Goats to make you 0/1 Goats and gaining a life each turn for cannon fodder.  This deck could either swing for the win or Mill them with Sands.  You could also alter this deck to splash Black quite easily since you have 3 Farseeks and add in Essence Drain, Rise from the Grave and the 2x Knights of Imfamy if you come up vs white or Mark of Vampire would be very decent as well.

This is what I built: A UB controlish sky is the limit to win.
Not sure it is the optimal built but should be ok for a prerelease.
I like the previous Green/White guild though as it seems fun to play.

I liked black's multiple exalted spells as well as some of the removal.  I immediately cut red.  It wasn't deep enough.  I wasn't impressed with white's synergy this time with black as the two Guardians aren't enough to make me want to go full on exalted.  I tried using blue and while the Archaemancer's with the removal seem like fun, I didn't like the build as a whole.  So I went black/green.  I added Sands as that card is a ridiculous finisher on its own in Limited.  One note:  I only played one Primadox.  I love the card, but I never want multiples on the table at the same time.

Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do.

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights. But you yourself are nothing so divine. Just next in line.

All I'm saying is, I don't really see how she goes around petrifying swords and boots and especially mirrors. How the heck does she beat a Panoptic Mirror? It makes no sense for artifacts either. Or enchantments, for that matter. "Well, you see, Jimmy cast this spell to flood the mountain, but then the gorgon just looked at the water really hard and it went away."

After looking at other people's lists I would cut safe passage for sands of delirium.  Overall the B/W aggro archtype looks like the most consistent list.  I like the U/G Primadox builds but it just seems underwhelming if you never draw primadox.

I felt the three farseeks meant we could afford to play three colors.  BWG fueled by roaring primadox.  Almost all of the creatures have great synergies with primadox in some way, and those that don't allow you to draw cards with packleader.

Really liked the light blue splash in a solid white/green deck.  Mana and ramping is excellent.  This is a sweet deck and the mix of the marker beetles and roaring and any of the fliers is just sweet.

Standard beat down concept, nice combo of Roaring Primadox and any of these options +1/+1 counters; cheap draw; or tokens anyone.  Or if you want to make something exhaulted, a few of those.  Nothing huge, but couple of nice tramplers.  Should do well in early, mid-game.

But I did also run across this option that really takes advantage of the exhaulted theme.

With all the exalted between black and white and having 2 unblockable Tormented Souls, I thought white black was best way to go.

I would also like to mention that when I tried to go to forums from the seled deck builder I got an error message.

Freedom's just another word for nothing-left-to-lose. - Kris Kristoferson (sung by Janis Joplin)

I am curious as to why there is that stupid timer on the sealed deck builder.

I really think 90% of the ppl here cheat on it because there is no way you would make a viable deck in under 3min when you have not seen what you have gotten in your pool at all.  The online deck builder is doubly tough because to me it is harder to see the name of the cards so that your not quite aware of what you have.

There is also this little gem of wisdom I usually follow.  Bombs can be really great to build a deck around but they are not the only thing that decide what I do in SEALED deck as you must have a decent base to build from and that usually means Commons or perhaps Uncommons, Multiples mean reliability ;)

For instantce:

You see in this draft that you have 3x Farseek's and a Elvish Visionary in your green commons, for more experienced players these mean easy mana excel and splashing meaning they can get the fatties out quicker and have the ability to go multi color without to much of a risk.

I also see in the same color Sentinel Spider and this pretty much tells me that I will be going green at the least as this guy is a 4/4 with REACH and Vigilence to help take down pesky Blue, Black and white flyers as well as swinging for your enemy each turn.  Can't believe he's a common so VERY possible to get multiples but even 1 is good.

Imagine opening your sealed pool and seeing 5 Timberpack Wolf's, they could make a really painful aggro deck and they are just commons, 2/2's for 2 mana usually make the cut in any color you play usually and having them pump each other is just insane.

Really thought B/G was the way to go athough I should probaby use the shade and the sands

So...I guess this is kind of a Mill/HERE!  TAKE MY KRAKEN HATCHLING! deck with some exaltation mixed in.  I liked the white cards...for some reason I didn't think of the Primadox as a bouncer, or I may have drafted differently.  Still...I think that screwing around with my opponent's graveyard and battlefield would be fun with this deck.
