07/12/2012 Sealed Deck Builder

This thread is for discussion of this week's Sealed Deck Builder, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.

This is both the last week of Avacyn Restored Sealed Pools (next week is going to be M13!), as well as the last week that I will be working at WotC. I'm leaving on good terms and it's been a blast working here, but it's time to persue my personal passion of video game design while doing some freelancing. if you know of a Seattle area game studio looking for a jr level designer, let me know!

So to mark both of these ends this week, this is a special pool. Pretend you're the luckiest guy or gal at your event, and all six boosters you opened have a Mythic Rare card inside! Have fun

This was actually the hardest one yet.

I could easily change one of these colours to black, but this is what I decided on in the end:

This was a very difficult pool, you want to play all the big bombs but the challenge here is to leave them in the sideboard.

2 Thunderous Wrath

The deck could probably be more consistent if you cut green, but the 2 Borderland Ranger help you ramp into 1 Griselbrand and 2 Thunderous Wrath if your forced to hardcast them.

I went with RW, even though the late game bombs and early game aggro threats seem to be divergent strategies.

Why? Because Gisela = win. And if you are playing Gisela, it would be insane not to play Avacyn. That leaves... a bunch of very aggressive early drops. No matter, let them use their removal and trade creatures until I get to my bombs.

I did not, however, run Tibalt to start though I'd consider boarding him in against a slow deck.

Aggro-bombs

The alternative was a hyperaggressive black-red deck for which I would have Tibalt in the opening build.

Suicide Aggro

A third option I suppose would be Green/x. The green here suffers from no playable 1 or 2 drops, which is also blue's issue, so Green/blue would probably get rolled by a fast opposing deck with even moderate removal. The best pairing seems to be white or red, and I chose white simply because the mana seemed better for Gisela.

Stompy

A very challenging pool (and I would have seriously blown an artery pulling all these mythics out of my boosters).
I decided to make use of the excellent card advantage this pool offers in combination with some soulbonding buddies.. Tamiyo and Avacyn wrap things up as the big hitters, with more of a late game plan in mind.

The challenge is finding enough smaller creatures to actually make it to the late game bombs. I'd definitely consider swapping in the Angelic Wall if it felt like my opponent didn't have enough humans for Human Frailty.

If someone really got a cardpool like this I'd want to punch them in the face. So hard to decide which way to go. Blue was the only obvious choice not to use(unless very lightly splashed). IU really wanted to go r/w but felt it was a little weaker than I had wanted it to be.

In the end since green had some mana fixing I went G/W. Doubt it was the best choice but with this cardpool who can say!

This was a really clever inside joke by the designers, but you gotta love the challenge it presents.
Pretty sure you need the green gift they give to you fix your mana, but you still can't go more than 3 colors.  I think the big toss up is between going White or Black (Green with a Red splash is pretty easy to support), the black gives a bit more removal, but you don't have enough creatures to really make your board prescence felt.  I think the White gives you better creatures, and access to Glissa, which is a real tank.  I'd avoid Avacyn, as it's a slow, plodding card, but Craterhoof is a tank on a par with Revenge of the Hunted.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind not playing all 3 angelic armaments?  As great as these bombs are I don't see making room for 8 mana spells before putting them in with these supporting options.

You don't play the angelic armaments because they cost 7 to use and do not provide any protection for a potential waste of that much mana (i.e. any kill spell and you just wasted more than a turn of tempo.  The effect can be great, but you need to balance it.  As an example comparing it to the swords, they cost a total of 5 mana, but the effect they all provide is significantly greater.  Or, the cheaper things like the 1 casting cost, 1 to equip, you do not care as much if the creature is removed as it only costs 1 to reequip to something else.

Here is the build I decided on:

10 Forest
8 Swamp

As amazing as Tamiyo is, there is no creatures worth anything to support adding blue.  It would have to be a splash.  If it was a match winning card such as Jace, I would absolutely find a way to splash for it.

White is a much better consideration, but after a few mediocre creatures, you have to get to 7 mana to play Gisela (and forces you to play red).    Otherwise the depth is not there.  Same with Red, which actually has some better creatures, but only a handful, again forcing you into three colors.

Green and black, although not exceptionally deep or with 'amazing' creatures until you get to the rares, have cards that you are just fine running out there.  Blood Artist is just rediculous.  Once you get it, every other card can chump/trade and you don't mind much at all.  Having two out will make your opponent not want to attack at all.  You also have two removal spells in black that are much easier to cast than the Thunderous Wraths.

I decided on 18 land because you have to get to 6 mana reliably.  Once you can drop a huge creature, the game should stall until you can win with one of your two bombs.  Your creature set has some serious weight to it, and the only issue you will have is with a base flyer deck.  (you would have serious trouble against a double Mist Raven type deck.

The triumphs are added because you will almost always have 3 power on the table, and most decks won't be able to put 4 up on you, which means you are drawing extra cards almost every turn.

You also have Eaten by Spiders out of the sideboard, along with Searchlight Geist (which I didn't think was incredibly necessary maindeck as you will most likely just chump with it).
There are several bombs in this set, the problem is, most don't match up in color.  My first thought was W/R.  Two monster angels for the top end, but then I looked at Red's creature base... ouch!  Then I saw 2 Blood Artist, which if you have not been playing around with AR you may not realized the sneaky power those pack.  However black doesn't have it's normally sac-ing enablers you normally see in AR.  So I opted for a G/W combo based around racing to get to 8 mana for the Angels or Craterhoof Behemoth.  The core of the deck is actually the key.  Cloudshift and Borderland Ranger to ensure I hit 8 of my first 10 land drops.

Concept is hold on until I hit 8 mana then start dropping bombs.  Because the deck is really reliant on getting out the Ranger and Abundant Growth early I bumped up my Forest count to improve my chance at getting at least 1 early.  By the time I get to 6 or 8 land, I should have 2-3 plains (or white production), so reducing my Plains count shouldn't hurt.

While the deck will be an absolute beast after it hits 8 mana, the challenge will be holding on till then, thus I didn't include the Tormentor's Trident, which is almost always an auto-include in sealed decks I build.

Because of creature counts, I doubt we should see anyone playing R (except the Angel) or U unless strictly as a splash and then probably only R.

One of the hardest I've ever built.  I eschewed Blue almost immediately, as the lack of creatures really hurt.  I tried Red, but didn't like any build I made with it.  I thought about splashing red and using white with green, but the gap between the early drops and the late plays was shocking.  Finally I looked at black, and I think I found my build.  Double Blood Artist makes combat a nightmare, and the Growth, Rangers, and Ferocity can help you get to your best cards by thinning your deck.  I only wanted 1 8-cost card in this deck, and Behemoth I think works better as it makes monsters out of your creatures.

I think that splashing for Gisella with only one mountain is not worth it.
You don't have any way to search for your mountain.
The chance that you get both Gisella and the mountain in your hand (and enough mana to cast it) is not worth risking having a dead card in hand.

I went with red/white because i felt Avacyn and Gisela were just too good.  Splashed in some green for mana fixing.

Man what a rough pool.  I near crapped my pants when I saw 6 mythics!
The choices were sooooo sososo painful.  I ended up 4 colors.  Usually I abhor splashing above the 3rd color, but the power leve present was just too good.
Since I was having a hard time starting off I decided to base my deck around my 4 equipment cards.  This means that pretty much any creature I draw will be a threat, thus I want to be sure to pad my creature count.

I almost cut the blue for moonlight geist, voice of the provinces, and a second triumph, but again, the power level is just too good.  Since I'm suiting up individual creatures I really wanted the hexproof that the shieldmate provides and Tamiyo is just a lockdown machine.  Yes I lack answers, but I'm also packing 3 huuuuuuuge creature bombs that can win the game from out of nowhere and enough equipment to sink a battleship.  Yes color is a serious issue, but I think I have it contained enough to the point where the deck will run properly.

Mad props to dantan for going the full distance and running 5 colors.  Now I'm inspired and I'm going to take it one step further:
Here's my 5 color build

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

Word and/or Presence over Bone Splinters?  With both Executioner and Driver in this deck, plus 2 Artist, Splinters is pretty good.

Oh, god this pool is awesome. I have played with griselbrand in sealed and he is good even when he's just a 7/7 Lifelinker. I kept trying to balance it and avoid going all in, but i eventually decided no color could hold its own, and just went all 5. Hoo, I am soooo excited. Here it is:

Lands 19:
6 Plains
2 Island
4 Swamp
1 Mountain
6 Forest-so I went 19 lands to ensure I could have mana each game, and my deck is very greedy. w/g is the base, so they get more lands.

Creatures 9:
1 Angelic Wall-a very good way to slow down an opponent
1 Avacyn, angel of Hope-I think griselbrand is more powerful, but they are both unbeatable
2 Blood Artist-very nice lifedraining abilities
1 Griselbrand-the card though canst not beat, no matter what. He can give you a pile of cards to keep the game running smoothly
2 Bordeland ranger-absolutely necessary for our five color deck to, you know, not get so ridiculously color-screwed that we will never win.
1 Craterhoof Behemoth-another superbomb, the meanest thing you could do is cloudshift him.
1 Gisela, Blade of Goldnight-probably the biggest bomb we have

Other 12:
1 Angelic Armaments-helps turn on our Triumphs and can give us the ability to win some games by attacking with our pumped up little guys.
1 Defang-quality removal
1 Abundant growth-mana fixer that cantrips.
2 Triumph of ferocity-lots of cards that can lead to us truning it on, so we should run it and use it to grab the lands and bombs necessary to kill the other guy.
3 Cloudshift-yes! we need to use these to flicker our borderland ranger, as it gives us a prayer of getting the right mana together at the right times. great with tamiyo.
2 Righteous Blow-helps us live through the early game, use it aggressively. Great with tamiyo.
1 Joint Assault-a very good trick that we love to have with an ultimate Tamiyo.
1 Tamiyo, the moon sage-we only have one blue splash, but she takes out creatures as she moves up, and if necessary can draw some cards to dig for game winners.

A few last thoughts: This pool was hecka fun. Painful and difficult, but so fun. I decided not to run tibalt because we have consistency problems anyway, and he is just not good enough to justify his inclusion in sealed (I will be extremely happy to take him home, however.) Also, some people have complained about AVR limited, But I think the format was a Blast. here's hoping m13 is good too.

1 Undead Executioner
2 Vorstclaw

7 Other Spells
---------------
1 Abundant Growth
1 Human Frailty
1 Sheltering Word
1 Terrifying Presence
1 Tormentor's Trident
2 Triumph of Ferocity

This deck is a combination of stall and ramp.  Hopefully double triumph isn't bad (although, definitely feels bad with blood artist).  Should be decent with crypt creeper, trusted force mage, soul cage fiend and driver of the dead early plus all the 6+ drops later.

Word and/or Presence over Bone Splinters?  With both Executioner and Driver in this deck, plus 2 Artist, Splinters is pretty good.

Hm.  Word might've been wrong.  I didn't think I had enough small drops to work with bone splinters *and* I don't like 2 for 1'ing myself, but I overlooked the driver interaction (saw the executioner, didn't think it was justified because it wouldn't happen often enough).  My thought process was word might gain me enough life and protect my blockers early to get me to the late game, and in the late game if I drew a fatty, but needed another couple turns to swing for the win it would help keep me alive (and keepy my fatty alive).  Bone splinters probably would've been better, the life exchange from 2 creatures dying with a blood artist or two out wouldn't be insignificant either.  In drafts I've done I've been able to engineer some pretty sweet swings with terrifying presence though.

Not the best but I worked with what I had. The generator gave me all mythics so it was a hard decision.

Such a confusing set of high-cost mythics to choose from!

After a lot of deliberation, I decided to resist the temptation of a 5-colour deck and go with something more consistent and synergistic.

What caught my eye most was the presence of:

2x Pathbreaker Wurm
2x Vorstclaw  (7/7 trample anyone?)

together with:

2x Joint Assault
2x Borderland Ranger

You can ramp up with Borderland Ranger, then make your soulbonded 6/4 and 7/7 with trample. Finally a Joint Assault on those two makes for a huge 17 points of trampling power.

The fact that you have multiples of each card makes it more consistent too, especially with some card draw and Tibalt sifting.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people will go 5 colours and end up with Griselbrand and Gisela in their hand, without a hope of casting them

By the way, was anyone frustrated at the presence of THREE Cloudshifts, with nearly no decent 'enters the battlefield' cards?   Except perhaps Borderland Ranger

seriously considered a 5 color deck. Eventually ruled out blue and green. Some great cards though.

I think I'm the first post for an M13 pool. I won't really bother posting the list. I went White-Green.

I was curious if anyone found a decient pool in any other colours.
@Drewbie

I just put together a U/W/b mid-range.  Hoping to use the exalted creatures as well as permission to hopefully push through the boosted Phantasm or other fliers.

It was painful not to use Krenko or the Phoenix--thought about going R/G, but decided this was my best option.  I'm having trouble with the window, or I'd post my list.

wrong week's thread, check the other thread, there are several.

RW Exalted.  Post Planar Cleansing, I expect surprise and Firewing Phoenix to give me the edge.  No other two color combos seem as good, and nothing worth splashing to add a color.
