This is going to be our DM's second homebrew compaign. The first was collective effort between our Dm and two others, and is based in a world where magic is tightly controlled by humans.

The same three people are working out this futuristic/scifi/fantasy compaign. Where all the races are happy except for the humans. (think titan A.E.) I know that knowledge deos not exsist in a vaccuum and i figured i would post this to see how many other people have made a campaign like this and what advice they might have.

I'd really like tips concerned what the weapons would be. For example: Longbow=Rilfe? Hand crossbow = Pistol/revolver?

More questions may come up. i'm just looking for general advice from peopel who have experience in this kind of compaign. Thanks in advance!

Which edition?
Well I occasionally like to throw in a spaceship...

Here is a D&D adventure i wrote for fun: yellowdingosappendix.blogspot.com.au/sea...

There were some D&D adventures published - DA 3 - Temple of the Frog comes to mind - it had heavy blasters which spit a 5d6 lightning bolt...

Sami, I believe I can help!

(Commence fanboy mode)

If you want science-fantasy or non-standard fantasy gaming in 4e, the guys over at Dias-Ex-Machina have the perfect stuff for you!  Amethyst is essentially the world of fantasy has rampaged through our world and has rendered it was a warped version of its former self.  Of course, you can mod this to work for an urban fantasy, futuristic fantasy, or what have you style games.  There's also UltraModern4, or D20 Modern for 4e games.  You can easily modify their take to include D&D levels of high magics.

(End of fanboy mode)

If you don't have the spare cash, there are 4E modern fan conversions everywhere!  Not to mention fan builds for races like the cliche grey aliens, robots, and more.  It just takes a bit of google-fu!

Now, if you have DDI, there was an issue of Dragon/Dungeon that had sci-fi elements you could dabble with!  It even has a short guide on adding Gamma World tech to a Barrier Peaks style game!

I hope this helps out somewhat.

Edit:  One of the community members made a really cool sci-fi/horror/fantasy D&D mash-up adventure inspired by Barrier Peaks.  It's pretty cool!

Some good pointers for the fellow hobbyist!:

  • KEEP D&D ALIVE, END EDITION WARS!
  • RESPECT PEOPLES' PREFERENCES
  • JUST ENJOY THE GAME!
Now fluffwise, the story is your tables'.  I can help point in the right direction.  I'd say, sample various dystopian novels, since the setting seems to imply a dystopia where no one is content.  Perhaps this tight grip on magic oppresses the masses and makes one assume that humans have it great.  On the contrary, the burden of magic is great on human society.  Some can't take the responsibility and crack as a result.  Other use it to keep other races down.   Also, Warhammer Fantasy's fluff might help to provide inspiration here and there, since I kinda got that vibe from reading what was there.  (Don't worry, that's a good thing in my book.)

Qoq, thanks for all of the advice and help so far. I have another question concerning home brews. When you sit down to create your own world, how do you end up going about it? Do you have a kind of system, or do you just wing it and put it all together at the same time.

Doctornecrotic, i'm pretty sure if we really wanted to, the group of us could put the moneys together to do it. And concerning the first compaign, yes the humans have it MUCH better off than the other races. Over the course of 300 years, they have created an empire where the other races are basically beat down and spit on. Also treated largely like slaves. So, often if you want to be a certain race you need to clear it with the DM and tie it into the story.
I will be checking out Warhammer Fantasy to see what that is all about.

You might also want to simply look at Gamma World (4e).
Thanks. Good to know where to start.
