Selling my v3.5 collection; How much is it worth?

I own nearly every main v3.5 hardback ever printed (barring one or two books) as well as all the Eberron Books and most of the Forgotten Realm books.

Most of my other books are in pristine, like new, hardly ever opened condition with only a handful having frayed covers (though the interiors are largely in good shape). I generally relied on PDFs, so many of the following books have never left my bookshelf. Unless stated otherwise, assume it is in pristine, like new condition.

Now my student loans are due and I'm looking to sell. I was hoping to get advice on what would be a good starting price. I know some books are selling for exorbitant prices online, but I'm hoping to sell the whole lot in one go if possible.

I also own the entire Star Wars: Revised Core Rules collection of books (not shown below) which are all in near "used - very good" condition.

With a collection that vast, if you're looking to get top dollar for it, you might want to consult a collectables / gaming store for assessment, since condition matters most to collectors rather than casual gamers. You might want to add up the cover prices to get a rough starting estimate; most of the books will have depreciated a bit, but the really popular ones as you've noted have gone up a lot, so the cover prices might be the way to go.

As a grad student (making literally dozens of dollars...), I can't afford to do an "at one go", otherwise I'd honestly consider it myself. But to be frank, you're probably in a better place to sell if you're keeping them bundled: A "complete" Eberron set, for instance, might be worth more than the books individually to a collector. You'll get fewer buyers but I think the total price would be higher. Run this by any assayer you check with.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

Seishi: I think it might be fun to have a one-off [game] tuned fairly, but with the intention of wiping the party.

DisposableHero_: if [my campaign] has taught me nothing else, it is that with this group, nothing tuned fairly will ever wipe the party

RadicalTaoist: I've been throwing **** at this group that's 5 levels over CRed in DFN, and have yet to wipe the party.

Cover Price?

At ~83 books and accessories at ~$30 each, that comes to about ~$2,500.

I'm really hoping to get almost twice that, though I'm beginning to think that, that is not very realistic.

It might be, actually - if demand for the books exceeds the condition loss and depreciation, then the result will be higher than ~2500. But I'm not in a position to say if that's the case, or if so by how much: that's what the professional appraisal (at collectables shops) is for.

I don't know how many are near you; if there's multiple, ask around and get loose estimates first, and see which of them is most likely to bend or offer high prices before bringing the actual collection in for negotiation.

Cancer prognosis: I am now cancer-free.

To be honest, I'd be suprised if you got more than like 200$ in one go.

Your best bet would be to sell them individually. I can see a bunch of people willing to drop like 30$ or more for a single book. I don't see many places except possibly a RPG shop being interested in the entire collection.  I don't see an RPG shop dropping 3K on used books, unless you know a very successful one somewhere.

"In a way, you are worse than Krusk"                               " As usual, Krusk comments with assuredness, but lacks the clarity and awareness of what he's talking about"

"Can't say enough how much I agree with Krusk"        "Wow, thank you very much"

"Your advice is the worst"

It deserved the slash.

Your best bet on this one, is to donate it to

(sly smile)

Here comes your 19th forums breakdown ... ohh who's to blame, it ain't 5E driving you insane.

How've you been RavingDork?

I'd have to agree that getting the cover price for them would certainly be a good place to start from if you can manage that.  In all honesty, if was was selling any of my collections and could get cover price for them I'd figure I'm coming out ahead especially for my DnD books which I may have only paid cover price on a couple of them.  Even looking at my SWSE collection I only paid cover price (actually just slightly more) for my second copy of SotG which is otherwise selling now for five times what I paid for it.

Come to think of it you may want to look at Amazon to see what people may be paying on there.  Then again I just looked at some of my books and see it wouldn't be a good idea for many of my books.

You may want to sell them all in one shot but finding a buyer for that is going to be hard.  If the cover prices add up to $2,500 I'd guess you'd be lucky to get $2000 for them if sold as one massive lot but it's been a while since I've looked for books.  It may be easier to move them is smaller lots but that may not even help all that much.

Now while some of those books may be selling for outrageous prices if you are selling them as a single lot you're best off to shoot for the cover price on all of them or perhaps what the cover price would be today.  However in the end I believe that if you can sell them for what you paid for them (including some of the additional costs) you should consider yourself to have come out ahead; this assumes you've gotten something out of owning them.  Perhaps I'm a fool but you shouldn't buy into an RPG with the assumption that you're making an "investment" that you will be able to sell down the road for more then you paid for it.

Selling used books are iffy. I buy for myself used 3.5 books. It really depends on the day for what you get can. One day at my local used book store 20 brand new unopened DragonLance Campaign setting books showed up for $15 each. That was a year ago, they still have a few left, they are perfect copies and selling less then orginal list price. Most of those books are for sale right now in a used book store for $10 to $15. I count 35ish that I could go buy right now if I wanted for that for less then $15 each. If the book store is selling them for that you will be luck to get $3 for most of them if you try to trade them in.

Get yourself an amazon account and post them. Your going to have to wait for the right person and be a few dollars cheaper with a better copy then anyone elso to sell them. Your frayed covers are going to hurt you on the price. If you go to a dealer you will get 1/4 of the price they are selling for right now if your lucky. They have to pay you an take the risk so they will not buy them at the price you see them for sale.

The other think which is going to effect the price a dealer is willing to pay is how many copies does he have on hand right now. The more he has the less he is willing to pay. So when I go to buy used books I will find two copies of the same book with different prices on them. The better copy may be priced less because if came into the story later.

So once you get a price from a dealer know that price may go up or down a week or month later if somebody walked in and bought all copies they have or down if somebody else sold them copies and they and they are not moving.

I wish you lots of luck and hope that you have an easy time of selling them.

One issue with amazon is that they take roughly 20% commission on  your books. I have tried to sell my extensive assortment of books a few times to dealers and on eBay, and I have had very little luck. I do not have as many as you, but I am close (I have about 10 less of the of books that aren't going for more than 10-15$) and didn't get any takers for more than $800. My suggestion is sell them on eBay as a lot and get as much as you can for them, making sure to set a reserve. One issue that I have seen recently is that with talks of 5th edition, the prices are coming down on the more pricey books. I remember seeing the Spell Compendium going for roughly 75$ on Amazon... and it is now down around $40.
Sell local and offer to sell as a set or individually. Some of the books I doubt will sell even for cover price as they weren't that high in demand.
However others like the Complete Arcane should definitely go for a good price.  A local shop here in Winnipeg (Pendragon) was selling a copy of the 3.5 Players Handbook for $125 (CDN) and was expecting to get it.  They also had a copy of the Complete Arcane (in rough condition) behind the counter priced at $300, and already had people interested in buying it.  That was less than a year ago and they were both gone last time I was there.

I'm not trying to get your hopes up,  just letting you know that you shouldn't let them all go for cheap.  The group I game with is strictly Forgotten Realms.  I would love to be able to get a hold of all the books in your list.
