48 hour contest - Obscure creatures!

You know what's awesome? Manticores. Lammasu (Lammasi?). Cockatrices. Wraiths. Hellions. MOTHER LOVING BRUSHWAGGS!.

I love obscure creatures, and am getting a little tired of seeing the same creature types over and over again, hence this contest.

Design a creature (any rarity).

Rules n stuff.

1) One submission per applicant.
2) At least one of your submission's creature types must be a type which has 10 or less entries on Gatherer, not counting Mistform Ultimus or creatures with the Changeling ability. So for example, a Wraith Shaman is fine because although there's loads of Shamans, there's only five Wraiths in the game.
EDIT - 3) No creating new creature types. Your submission's creature types must all be searchable on Gatherer.

I won't award points in this contest, but I will give feedback and pick a winner based on how strong the submission is; obviously I'll take stuff like originality, flavour, and mechanical and colour balance into consideration.

I'll give you a hint; I also love wierd keyword abilities. If you can work an obscure keyword into your submission (such as amplify, hideaway, recover, etc... something that ideally shows up on only a handful of cards), then this may help your score!

Contest closes at 1 pm GMT on Wednesday.

GO!

Funny story about this card....

@mikemearls The office is basically empty this week, which opens up all sorts of possibilities for low shenanigans

@mikemearls In essence, all those arguments I lost are being unlost. Won, if you will. We're doing it MY way, baby.

@biotech66 aren't you the boss anyway? isn't "DO IT OR I FIRE YOU!" still an option?

Darkwood Scorpion
Creature - Scorpion R
Deathtouch, infect
The strength of a scorpion's venom is inversely proportional to the size of its pincers.  The terrors of Darkwood have long since lost their pincers altogether--replaced by two small barbs, each a separate stinger.
2/3

a quick justification//argument in support = [spoiler]
deathtouch and infect on same creature seems redundant//stupid at first glance, but it really serves some big uses -- you're more likely to throw a wall in front of a creature with infect than a creature with deathtouch; using both abilities creates a much more difficult decision on the defending player ----- while deathtouch won't kill an indestructible creature, infect can
also, i'm trying (very hard) to convey that their venom is ridiculously strong -- i vaguely thought about deathtouch, infect, wither... but that was just blatantly too much

I bet Poisonous would get you more points with the judge.  It's more obscure (only on two cards) and doesn't make your Deathtouch as redundant while keeping the theme of your creature.

It looks about right, though you may want to consider the memory issues of having a card that gives itself two kinds of counters and then eventually proliferates.

Good point. Just edited it a little - now in most games it'll have the same number of counters at all times. And were you playing against infect or wither or vampire hexmage - it should be easy to remember which counters have been removed. At least I would think.

Funny story: InQuest Magazine (I think it was InQuest) had an oversized Chaos Orb which I totally rooked someone into allowing into a (non-sanctioned) game. I had a proxy card that was a Mountain with "Chaos Orb" written on it. When I played it, my opponent cried foul: Him: "WTF? a Proxy? no-one said anything about Proxies. Do you even own an actual Chaos Orb?" Me: "Yes, but I thought it would be better to use a Proxy." Him: "No way. If you're going to put a Chaos Orb in your deck you have to use your actual Chaos Orb." Me: "*Sigh*. Okay." I pulled out this huge Chaos Orb and placed it on the table. He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Hi guys! So, I'm a sort of returning player to Magic. I say sort of because as a child I had two main TCG's I liked. Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon. Some of my friends branched off in to Magic, and I bought two pre-made decks just to kind of fit in. Like I said, Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon were what I really knew how to play. I have a extensive knowledge of deck building in those two TCG's. However, as far as Magic is concerned, I only ever used those two pre made decks. I know how the game is played, and I know general things, but now I want to get in the game for real. I want to begin playing it as a regular. My question is, are all cards ever released from the time of the inception of this game until present day fair game in a deck? Or are there special rules? Are some cards forbidden or restricted? Thanks guys, and I will gladly accept ANY help lol.
I have the same problem with women.

That's what RPJesus tends to do. That's why I don't think he's a real person, but some Magic Card Archive Server sort of machine, that is programmed to react to other posters' comments with obscure cards that do in fact exist, but somehow missed by even the most experienced Magic players. And then come up with strange combos with said cards. All of that is impossible for a normal human to do given the amount of time he does it and how often he does it. He/It got me with Light of Sanction, which prompted me to go to RQ&A to try and find if it was even possible to do combat damage to a creature I control (in light that Mark of Asylum exists).

Even though Rigger itself fits the criteria, I added Assembly-Worker just for the flavor of the goblin working in a manufacturing plant. Strictly better, in regards to Magic usuage, is defined in a vacuum. It doesn't matter that Goblin tribal benefits exist in large quantities; at least, not for the term's usage. Is it better in every situation? No. But no card is strictly better than any other card by that definition.

I'd mark that card down just for not using the awesome flavor text associated with the name.

"He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways. Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin..."
Arcane Eye
Creature – Arcane Eye
: Exile Arcane Eye.  Until the end of turn, you may cast Arcane Eye from exile without paying its mana cost as though it had flash.
Some must see true power to truly believe.

Funny story about this card....

"Arcane" is an Instant subtype and thus cannot be a creature type.

An easy way to solve this problem is the exact same way they solved in in future sight / lorwyn. What they did was create a card type (Tribal) that could have creature subtypes associated with it but did not make the card a creature. So you can create a card type that can have instant and sorcery subtypes associated with it but does not make the card an instant or sorcery.
"Labirt Creature - Arcane Eye"

This contest should be easy for me, I usually have heaps of weird creature types in my sets... there was one with tribal riggers, citizens, and anteaters, but let me see if there's anything from my latest set that would fit the bill.
Well, there are 11 crabs in Magic, so they are excluded from this contest /:
There are 16 frogs. 14 leviathans.
Only 7 worms though. Only 10 crocodiles, 3 badgers, 2 squirrels, 1 wombat (but my wombat in Blighters was a reprint anyway).
10 unicorns? I think I'll go with that then, since this weird creature is one of my favorites.

Monstrous Unicorn – 6g
Creature – Unicorn (R)
All creatures able to block Monstrous Unicorn do so.
Whenever Monstrous Unicorn attacks, each creature defending player controls can block an additional creature this turn.
It ate a mountainful of candy to get this big.

Thalakos Hypnotist

Creature - Thalakos Wizard
Shadow
Whenever Thalakos Hypnotist attacks and isn't blocked, gain control of target creature and put a torpor counter on it.  It doesn't untap during its controller's untap step for as long as it has a torpor counter on it.

For once I have cause to thank the Grand Creature Type Update.  this is sort of an update to Thalakos Deceiver and Thalakos Dreamsower

Not to be confused with Shade (+1/+1 for :b
I'd mark that card down just for not using the awesome flavor text associated with the name.

I didn't want to push the reference too hard.
