This thread is for discussion of this week's Draft Simulator, which goes live Monday morning on magicthegathering.com.

I think b/r was the way to go, or maybe just red, oh well...

3 Tormented Soul

2 Dark Favor
1 Onyx Mage
4 Bloodrage Vampire
1 Warpath Ghoul
2 Devouring Swarm
1 Gravedigger
1 Vampire Outcasts
1 Sengir Vampire
1 Consume Spirit
16 Swamps

the only pick i had difficulty with was taking the Doom Blade over the second Sengir Vampire P3P5... it does mean i can afford to run 16 land, as my curve is 3@1, 10@2, 7@3 and 4@4+... after the initial decision to stay mono-black... and the overrun was picked out of a lacklustre second pack, coz it beats me outright...

Bloodthirsty Goblins!! Chandra!! Goblin Chieftain!!

I drafted b/r, just like everyone else on the forum.
Pretty staightforward R/B Bloodthirst.  Chose the Gorehorn Minotaurs over the Goblin Chieftain hoping the Chief would table, he didn't.  Still think that right choice.  Not as much direct damage as you would like, but tons of creatures and 5.5 enablers plus Chandra, the Firebrand should help the 8 bloodthirst creatures go off.

Round 1:
Chandra's Phoenix
Chandra's Outrage
Vampire Outcasts
Belltower Sphinx --- Could have drafted Stormblood Berserker but hate when this guy is against me
Goblin Tunneler

Spells (5):

Chandra's Outrage

Planeswalker (1):
Chandra, the Firebrand

Land (16):
Dragonskull Summit
Mountain x 8
Swamp x 7

Black/Green actually works out pretty well, as you end up one of only two black drafters and one of only two green drafters at the entire table!  It isn't too hard to stay more or less mono-black through pack 1, and then you're all set to pick up Overrun and Dungrove Elder in pack two.  I'm not sure having Consume Spirit and Dungrove Elder in the same deck is really a good idea, especially lacking any Rampant Growths, but the Dark Favor will be amazing on either a hexproof creature or a Tormented Soul (probably wouldn't play them all though).

Round 1:
Consume Spirit
Gravedigger
Vampire Outcasts
Sorin's Thirst

Taking red early and quickly moving into black because it seemed very open. Not only did I make myself a seemingly picture perfect red/black bloodthirst deck (could use 1 more minotaur, and maybe a dragon or two ;) ) If you went red/black early you got rewarded greatly in pack three, with chandra being the stone cold nuts and being passed two sengir vampires. I believe that the doomblade is the windmill slam over the second sengir because this deck is trying to be ultra aggressive in an already aggressive format. The doom blade allows you to clear blockers early if you need such a thing, or be able to kill basically anything because there will be MAYBE one other black drafter at the table, two is very very doubtful.

Round 1:
Chandra's Phoenix
Chandra's Outrage
Vampire Outcasts
Stormblood Berserker
Duskhunter Bat
Goblin Fireslinger
Blood Seeker

Tormented Soul
Pride Guardian
Taste of Blood
Personal Sanctuary
Swamp

Ending up with a very solid B/R list with a solid aggressive curve. Running 16 lands should be fine. A little light on removal, especially for a BR deck. Only sad I missed one of the Sengir Vampires and ended up with only 1 Duskhunter bat. Otherwise I'm 100% ok with this list.

The focus of the deck is Bloodthirst.  I probably should have drafted more Bloodthirst enablers, although I P3p3 did pull a Tormented Soul over a Sengir Vampire.  Think that was the right move, since at the time I was very limited on enablers.  I'm not sure if Devouring Swarm is right for the deck, but I included it because it is a flier and could push through some damage for Bloodthirst creatures.  My first pick probably should have been Consume Spirit, but it worked out better since I was able to get a Chandra, the Firebrand.

This deck will struggle against large creatures, but I can side in Reassembling Skeleton and Act of Treason for those.  Circle of Flame will do well against other aggressive decks.  And Smallpox against decks with limited creatures.  This deck will win matches, lose some games along the way and struggle to take it all.  Let me know how I could have made this better!
B/R easily.  I didn't first pick the phoenix b/c the azure mage is more versatile (and easier to splash) and quite possibly more powerful in a vacuum than the phoenix is in draft.  And to be honest, while I did end up playing red, I'm not too saddened missing it.  The phoenix is an efficient evasive beater at 2/2 flying haste for 3, but it's not likely to recur (b/c everyone else was picking up our red burn spells).

Round 1:
Azure Mage-better card in a vacuum than chandra's phoenix, which is what we're starting from.
Chandra's Outrage-holy heck yes.
Vampire Outcasts-sweet bomb, sweet bomb
Stormblood Berserker-ok so we should have picked the phoenix, but it's not too big a loss.  B/R bloodthirst here we come.
Duskhunter Bat-sweet
Goblin Fireslinger-awesome
Blood Seeker-rockin
Goblin Piker-not bad
Sorin's Thirst-awesome
Smallpox-probably won't make it, but not bad
Brink of Disaster-possible
Goblin Arsonist-sweet
Hideous Visage-finisher
Firebreathing-probably not
Swamp-meh

Round 2:
Stormblood Berserker-I need this card too much to hate pick the overrun
Dragonskull Summit-r/b colorfixing more useful than blood ogre
Goblin Arsonist-rockin, don't have anything we want to tutor for
Blood Ogre-sweet, not sure if probably should have taken duskhunter bat instead
Goblin Fireslinger-awesome
Crimson Mage-pretty cool, sure I could hate pick the carnage wurm...hm...would I splash for it?  Actually probably yeah.  Shoulda taken the wurm.
Disentomb-can recur any eventual bombs I pick up
Devouring Swarm-awesome
Goblin Tunneler-meh
Goblin Grenade-I do have gobbos don't I...
Turn to Frog-nothing in my colors
Bloodrage Vampire-sure, why not
Bountiful Harvest-whatevs
Forest-whatevs
Plains-whatevs

Round 3:
Gorehorn Minotaurs-bomb bloodthirster
Chandra, the Firebrand-O.O!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  YOINK!!
Sengir Vampire-awesome
Onyx Mage-cool
Doom Blade-SWEET (I was given a talking to last time for picking a sengir vampire over a doom blade, although this time I have enough awesome creatures that passing the vampire is easier)
Skywinder Drake-eh
Brink of Disaster-sure
Fling-I have some big stuff in here
Tormented Soul-sure
Goblin Grenade-I probably have enough bloodthirst enablers...but come to think of it I don't have enough goblins to warrant 2 grenades....oh well
Tormented Soul-oh sure why not.  if you insist
Pride Guardian-whatevs
Taste of Blood-whatevs
Island-whatevs
Swamp-whatevs

I went ahead and cut down to 16 lands b/c my curve tops out at 5 cmc and there are only 5 cards in the deck over 3 cmc.  This deck really built itself as I drafted, not hard.

redrafted deck selection changes

1x Blood Ogre  ==> Duskhunter bat
1x Crimson Mage  ==> Carnage Wurm
1x Bloodrage Vampire ==> Chandra's Phoenix
1x mountain+1x swamp+1x Goblin Arsonist ==> 3x forest

went up to 17 lands to support the wurm

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

I don't think I like the outcome of this deck as much as the first.  It isn't as focused with the theme.  Consume Spirit and Dungrove Elder make the focus a little conflicted.  Spirit is a little weaker, and I thought of removing it from the deck.  I started with Spirit and wanted to focus on black.  Wasn't getting enough black so needed another color, and green looked good.  I almost passed the Elder, because of the conflict.  I knew at least one would make the deck, so I thought I would decide when building.  Originally I excluded Gladecover Scouts, until I realized it made Elvish Archdruid better.  So I included the Scouts, Dark Favor and Hideous Visage.  This did change the feel from tempo to a mid-range deck, and also shifted my lands to be a little more forest heavy, making Consume Spirit weaker.  Spirit is still good at a few damage, but won't be the game winner most draft it for.  Let me know what you think and how it could be better!
This deck drafted itself. I think there might have been one or two contentious picks, but overall I felt like I had very few meaningful choices once I was committed to R/B bloodthirst (although I do think I overvalued the bloodrage vampire)

Thought I would try something completely different for my 2nd draft.  Knowing this was a gimme R/B bloodthirst draft, I chose to follow a different path, using the first two picks to lead me in a different direction.

p1p1, has a very good non-R/B option in Azure Mage.  For p1p2 we see Elvish Archdruid, which is actually a much stronger early pick than it is a pack 3 pick-up because you can now build around him.  Also the combo of needing 4 mana to draw cards from the mage and having a potentially big mana producer is nice.  So in M12 drafting if you find yourself going U/G you really are looking for something specific, hexproof and boosts.  So that is what I did.

So my deck ended up with 6 1cc creatures and 4 1cc spells.  There wasn't as many Llanowar Elves as I would like to create real acceleration, so the acceleration all will fall on the Elvish Archdruid.  He is more of one option than really relying on the mana acceleration, and honestly as I stated before he is more to be comboed with Azure Mage than to really bring out your bigger cc creatures faster, but when he is out, he is your biggest threat.  You should NEVER attack or block with him unless it is for the finishing move.  He pumps your 5 1/1 elves as well as being a big mana source.

This deck will likely weenie rush a bit, but it is really lying in wait for Trollhide to show up to really do the damage, then finish with either Lure or Overrun.  I sideboarded the frost spells to keep the deck focused.  Must be careful in using the 3 Unsummon, too.  They are the real board control cards.  The Greater Basilisk and the Belltower Sphinx are also stall/board control more than aggro, allowing it to set-up for the kill with regenerating hexproofs doing the chipping away.

Creatures (16):
Gladecover Scout x 4  --- Critical card, don't just throw them away
Llanowar Elves  --- can be big early
Phantasmal Bear --- The fact that ability targeting from other creatures can kill him make him very fragile, but good early beater
Garruk's Companion --- being able to drop him on turn 2 can have big dividens
Coral Merfolk --- worst creature in deck, you need a chump blocker use him first.
Azure Mage  --- As with all Mages, power in his ability, don't forget it is poly
Sacred Wolf --- I would say he is your best candidate for Trollhide because a 5/3 regenerator is going to cause problems
Elvish Archdruid --- He is your best single creature because mana-gen and pumps all your other elves.
Aether Adept  --- Ever notice how bounce is more troublesome than counter in draft environments
Aven Fleetwing --- 2nd best Trollhide option
Greater Basilisk --- With so many hexproofs, don't just windmill Lure on him and attack at first chance, beware the Doom Blade
Chasm Drake  --- Make them fly Tinkerbell!
Belltower Sphinx --- Even as a 1 of, they turn any deck into a potential Mill deck.

Spells (9):
Ponder  --- Dig deep, find that combo!
Unsummon x 3 --- Alot of power in this card.  "With great power comes great responsibility!"
Turn to Frog --- Watch out for the tounge when you kiss the frog
Trollhide x 2 --- Key card in deck, use only on hexproofs and then be care to keep them alive!
Lure  --- Finisher #1
Overrun --- Finisher #2

Lands (15):
Forest x 8
Island x 7

Lands (15):
Forest x 8
Island x 7

how on earth is lure a finisher? I must be missing something, but it doesn't seem like a finisher to me.

how on earth is lure a finisher? I must be missing something, but it doesn't seem like a finisher to me.

Think about having several creatures out, maybe several weenies, then putting a lure on a Gladecover Scout forcing my opponent to use all his creatures to block this weenie 1/1, and letting all my others get through for the fatal damage.

That is what I mean.  It ends the game.

It helps to allow you to get that last bit of damage through when they have "stalled" your weenie's.

The idea is to hit them early, get them down somewhat, then when they balance with creatures to keep your weenies from getting through, then keep building up the "horde" or dropping some "stall" creatures of my own, then spring the surprise that all his "defenses" will only stop the 1 1/1 and let the rest of the "horde" through.

Make sense now?

yes, sry i dont play much draft (curse the 20-minute drive to my local store)

This deck is a control deck focused on decking for the win.  I'm not sure it will have enough to last into late game, so hopefully it can deck my opponent quickly.  It looks like a fun deck to play and may actually work for a few wins.  I went with 6 Plains with only 4 white cards in the deck because 3 are 1-drops and I want to drop those as much as possible.  The curve is very low, so this should not affect early play.  It is more important to get the Guardians out than it is the Bears.  Guardians will prevent early damage and gain some life to help with the later damage I will take.  Unsummons can be used on the Stonehorn Dignitary to prevent some attacks from opponent.  I just wish I had more card drawing to make the Jace's Erasure more affective.

The sideboard has many options.  Turn to Frog for a bomb or larger creature that is difficult to deal with.  Alluring Siren may come in handy against some small creatures.  A couple of options to add some flying, which I left out because it is more expensive and will mostly be used for blocking.  Angel's Mercy is included in sideboard if the games go long and I need some extra life to help me stay alive.

Please give me your opinions on the deck.  First time I have drafted an alternate win condition deck before.  Want to know how might work in a real draft.
