What are your hopes/predictions for Return to Ravnica?

Hello all,

Ravnica is easily one of the most highly rated blocks in Magic's history and I'm sure everyone has already formed some expectations or hopes for what the return will bring. What are they? I'd be interested to see what people have come up with. Personally I've had two ideas that I'd be ecstatic if they did:

One - Eldrazi invading Ravnica

The Eldrazi have just recently broken free of their prison on Zendikar so Jace and Gideon have returned to Ravnica to see help/guidance on how to deal with the new crisis. I'd love it if the Eldrazi invaded Ravnica at the same time purely to see a bunch of cards of eldritch abominations ransacking a metropolis instead of hamlets or forests. Ravnica could still win in the end so that it can still be a focal point in Magic's story, I'd just like to see the Eldrazi make an attempt.

Two - Color-shifted Guilds/Shattered Guilds

In Ravnica the two-color combination determined the ideology and role of the Guild it represented. Eg, Blue-Green represents control and nature, therefore Simic - The guild which tries to control nature. In Agents of Artifice it depicted what happened to the Guilds after the destruction of the guildpact. Simic for example were destroyed and the Boros became a group of mercenaries. I'd like to see some of the ideology of the Guilds endure while the color changed. To continue my Simic example, they could be shifted to Blue-Black or Green-Blue-Black. They still want to control nature but are a shell of what they used to be. Any pretense of doing it for Ravnica's benefit is lost so they are secretly just creating diseases/monsters to make a mess. This also fits in with Blue-Black in Innistrad so there would be some cross-block synergy. Other guilds could be limited to a single color or more than just 2. Lorwyn, to me, is the "gold" standard of how to do a tribal block since the tribes had interesting but compatible asymmetry (Eg, Fairies were Blue-Black, Kithkin were mostly white, etc) which could be done simply with just Guild ideology and not a condition of the card itself (eg, Tribal type). To shamelessly squeeze in my Eldrazi idea above, they could be the color-version of Changelings to glue everything together as Tribal - Eldrazi cards include Sorceries/Instants/Enchantments so are more flexible than using Artifacts as have been done in the past for Gold blocks.

Anyway, those are some ideas I've been playing with. What do you hope to see?

Shocklands, possibly Wedge Tri-Lands

other than that, lots of multicolour cards, maybe something like doublefaced cards for spells and not just permanents.

I want a card for Feather. Last we saw of her, she was the new Boros guildmaster.

I don't want the Eldrazi invading Ravnica. Ravnica's already had the Nephilim which fulfilled much the same role, and I dislike the treatment of Mirrodin in the Scars block and would rather not see it repeated here.
I hope it's the biggest disappointment ever.
People are so insanely hyped over Ravnica, but nearly the only thing people liked about it that actually has an impact on this set is the setting. And as far as I've understood from reading various posts, the guilds are facing a few problems.

Not that I want it to be outright awful.

I merely hope to see lots of multi-colored cards, considering Alara was my 1st block, and I've seen and heard about Ravnica being awesome.

I currently run a deck for Standard, Modern, Commander and Legacy. For standard, I have a typical, horribly budget Rakdos Deck Wins. For Modern, I have a B/G/U/W Draw-go Reanimator featuring my favorite creature, Wurmcoil Engine. For Legacy, I'm trying too hard to break Pyromancer Ascension. I also run a Naya Zoo with all the oldies. For Commander/EDH, I'm running The Mimeoplasm. A little morals thing about me, I like winning through combos, but not infinitely. However quiet, I am a Christian, so feel free to tell me you are too, it's always a relief.

1.) Eldrazi will be involved.  Other than possibly a (mythic) rare or two, they will not be as big as the ones from Rise of the Eldrazi.  They will possibly be entirely colorless, unlike ROE.
2.) Enchantments will matter.
3.) The guilds will exist, but with less power than in the first block.  Two-color pairs will not be a theme, though two-colored cards will happen.
4.) There will be a multicolored vs. colorless theme going on.
5.) The shocklands will return if they didn't return in M13.
6.) Wedges probably won't be a "thing" but a fox can hope, right?

That they print Kiora Auta's planeswalker card, it would be the perfect setting for the following reasons;

A multicolored planeswalker associated with Simic in DoTP 2012
R2R is "assumed" a multicolor set, so therefore multicolor planeswalkers would be good

Also who thinks that Jens, Dawntreader Elk will be reprinted in M13 to help support R2R's "assumed" multicolor theme?
Where the hell did you get Eldrazi will be on Ravnica? o_O I mean, sure, it could happen. But if they catch Jace by surprise, the Multiverse are kinda doomed. Plus, it would make making the set around guilds a bit difficult.

Lots of multicolor cards are a must. Shocklands are a must. Enchantments won't matter. The guild system will somehow be revived, at least as a mini theme.

We'll hopefully see the structure type?
as long as they don't bring Annihilator Eldrazi might even be fine
just don't make them as unfun as last time

I think this idea mostly comes from the fact that the last time we heard from Gideon, he was traveling to Ravnica to recruit help to defeat the Eldrazi. I guess people are making a link there and assuming that RtR will have something to do with that.
"I have existed from the morning of the world and I shall exist until the last star falls from the night. Although I have taken the form of Gaius Caligula, I am all men as I am no man and therefore I am a God."
This thread is just for fun. I'd like to see the Eldrazi destroy Ravnica because it would be exciting and has huge potential for awesome art. Any sort real connections to justify it can help solidify the prediction, but mostly I made the thread and brought up the Eldrazi as a personal wish and wanted to know what everyone else hoped for.

there was an article recently stating Remand was too powerful for today's Standard

I could get behind the Eldrazi crashing around through the city....but only if WotC used this for the sets official theme song:

This is the same wrongheaded thinking we see in comic books. Comic Book death is bad, but it exists because destroying everything your customers like for cheap drama is worse.

I'm pretty sure it's been confirmed. I just don't think the guilds are going to have the same clout they did in Ravnica.

2.) Enchantments will matter.

I agree entirely. The first Ravnica had a small enchantment subtheme. And Avacyn supports enchantments pretty heavily. I'd say we're due for an enchantment-themed set.

Perhaps but Comic Book Death is also so bad because it's so often undone. It's like soap operas where they constantly put people in comas to cause drama and revert it the second people lose interest.

What I'm suggesting is a fitting Act 2 of the Eldrazi Arch where instead of attacking some plane that we've never heard of it goes for the one that would create a huge impact in the story. Stories with needless drama (Comic Book Death) are bad, but so are stories where they never really hurt the main characters, in this case a Plane itself. I'm not saying Ravnica has to ultimately be destroyed, but a Pyrrhic Victory where they only defeat the Eldrazi by the skin of their teeth and no small cost in lives/infrastructure would to me be a good story.

The Eldrazi are great big eating machines. They don't get an arc.
I am kind of sick of all this war conflict is okay but faction X vs. faction Y is kind of got me board I want a global problem like a plane is going to explode or some walker to set up a long term planar domination or a power grab from bolas.

We need another Ice Age block where the world is dealing with the aftermath of some crisis caused in a previous release. The Sylex blew up after the end of Antiquities and the world was cast into darkness in The Dark. As the world got colder everyone became more desparate and resulted in all the fighting and wars in Fallen Empires. Finally we got to Ice Age where the cold reached it's peak. Right now we don't have that kind of story which is why I'd like to see something get invaded or destroyed.

Example Eldrazi Arc

Zendikar/Worldwake - The world is shifting and chaotic because of the Eldrazi magic
Rise of the Eldrazi - They are unleashed to the Multiverse as eldritch abominations above normal morality, or rules of physics for that matter.
Return to Ravnica - The Eldrazi destroy much of Ravnica but are pushed back in the end.
After Ravnica Set - The people are struggling to survive in the wreckage and rebuild.

Anyway, just my ideas. Lately all the blocks follow similar patterns but by spreading it over a few blocks there are more options for themes/narratives.

  • Revamped Circu, Dimir Lobotomist

  • Competitive Mill

  • Grand Arbiter Augustus (the latest iteration of the Augusti)

  • A new Mike Flores Rakdos card

  • Return of or new Guild Mages!

I'd actually love to get a new snow-block. I've always thought snow wasn't so bad after all (Scrying Sheets for red decks is pure win in EDH). Perhaps this time executed bit better and in a more interesting way...
Niv-Mizzet, planeswalker

I don't care what he does, I just want him.

I care a wee bit about what he does but no, I agree. It would be great to see Niv as a PW. However there is a lot of speculations that Ral Zereck will get his PW card in RtR and I do not forsee them printing two PW in the same block with the same duel - color representation from the same guild.

Personally, I'd rather have Niv.

I'd love a snow block too!  I love snowy settings!

Also the possibility of the best animal ever showing up.  ^_^

I was really sad when I realized only permanents had Snow-supertype? Why couldn't there be snow instants/sorceries, since the supertype doesn't have any special interaction. It would only help us to draw something nice with Scrying Sheets

Or a -planeswalker. We already had Karn, so why not?
It really was nice that in CS, snow-supertype wasn't hindrace but more like advance, with few exceptions of course.

... and since snow-supertype is quite rare nowadays, I would love some equipment/creature giving/having "protection from non-snow". My inner EDH-player would love something like that!

And as a theme, we could use something like Nordic Mythology? We had Innistrad based on Horror-stuff, so why not? (Okay, I'm bit biased since I live in Scandinavia, but anyways.)

Thor's Hammer
Legendary Artifact - Equipment

Equipped creature gets +3/+2 and has " Thor's Hammer deals damage to target creature equal to equipped creature's power"

Equip

... why not?
At least call it by it's real name, Mjölnir.
I'd like a Nordic setting too (probably for the same reasons), but snow doesn't wow me, so I'm okay with skipping that.

... Has WotC ever used any other letters in english card names besides a-z or ae (in aether)?
Well, there's always a first time.

Valhalla
Legendary Land

,: Exile target creature you control and another target creature you don't control?
(Okay, I'm once again on the mood to create cards... >_<)
Well, it's not unlikely that they cut out the ö, they have used some untraditional characters before, like Bösium Strip. (I don't trust autocard to work with that.)

Oh. Right, I forgot that one.

On the other hand, I really think combining Nordic Mythology with snow-block would work, as to create "cold, snowy feeling", like Innistrad tried to create "gloomy and scary" feeling.

At least to me, when I think of snow and cold, Nordic Mythology as theme pops up to my mind. Once again, this is only my opinion about the matter.
Well, of course, I just don't think Snow is a terribly good mechanic. We'll see though, it has the potential to be good, it just needs more effort than most other things.

Yeah, snow as a mechanic isn't really bonkers like Cascase/Storm/Dredge, but like you said, has potential in it. It totaslly sucked back in Ice Age, but Coldsnap showed us (or to me, at least) that it wasn't that bad. There were some really good cards like Scrying Sheets (well, at least in EDH) but the limited pool for snow-cards is saddening small. (Reason why most just play Scrying Sheets + snow-basics).
I'm told that the guilds are no more. Notwithstanding this, I speculated on another thread about a cycle of guild-alligned planeswalkers. I think its fair to say that 10 walkers in a block would be unlikely, so perhaps just a cycle of the enemy-color guilds.

In this cycle, they all have ultimate abilities that can be activated immediately.

Kiora Atua -
Planeswalker - Kiora
[+1]: Reveal the top card of your library. If it is a creature card you may put a +1/+1 counter on target creature, and that creature gains all the creature types of the revealed card until end of turn. Then put that card into your hand.
[0]: Choose target creature you control. You may put an aura card in your hand with enchant creature onto the battlefield attached to that creature. You may then move any number of auras attached to other creatures you control to that creature.
[-4]: Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a creature card and exile it. Target nontoken creature gets all abilities of the exiled creature and gains gets +X/+Y, where X is the exiled creature card's power and Y is its toughness for as long as that card remains exiled. Put the rest of the revealed cards on the bottom of your library.
[4]

Kalina, Priestess of Despair -
Planeswalker - Kalina
[+1]: Tap target permanent. It's controller discards a card.
[0]: Target creature you control gets +3/+3, flying and lifelink until end of turn.
[-5]: Destroy target permanent.
[5]

Ral Zarek -
Planeswalker - Ral
[+1]: Shuffle any number of cards in your graveyard into your library. Then shuffle any number of cards in your hand into your library and draw that many cards.
[0]: Search your library for an instant or sorcery card and reveal that card. Shuffle your library, then put the card on top of it.
[-3]: Each player may cast an instant or sorcery card in his or her hand hand without paying its mana cost.
[3]

Lilith of Stone Death -
Planeswalker - Lilith
[+1]: Search your hand and library for a creature card and put it into your graveyard. Then shuffle your library.
[0]: Remove any number of counters from target creature. If that creature is indestructible, it may be destroyed this turn as if it wasn't indestructible. If that creature is a token, destroy it.
[-4]: Return target creature card from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control.
[4]

Feather Ascended -
Planeswalker - Feather
[+1]: Exile target artifact or enchantment.
[0]: Creatures you control get first strike and vigilance until end of turn.
[-5]: Feather deals 5 damage to target creature or player and you gain 5 life.
[5]
Likely to see Ral and Kiora but we just had g/b(Garruk) and b/w(Sorin) PWs in INN block. If this is true then Ral and Kiora would finish that cycle as it started with Aljani when he became R/W.

Though we will see what the M13 will hold before I take any other proximations.
I for one am hoping that Jace dies.  I am so sick of him.  The past few sets have been nice without him.

I don't want him to die. I just want him to not get any cards for a while, so that other Blue planeswalkers I like better (read: pretty much all of them) can get some time in the limelight. I mean, he's had six printings so far, second only to Garruk (who's had seven).
