This thread is for discussion of this week's Draft Simulator, which goes live Monday morning on magicthegathering.com.

Passing the Jace pack 3 was very painful, but I needed the Jade Mage to do something with all the acceleration I had picked up. Adaptative Automaton did kind of force me into trying to draft some kind of tribal deck, and I'm not sure I managed to. Not the best deck, still should be fun to play with.

Round 1:
Adaptive Automaton
Chandra's Outrage
Shock
Elvish Archdruid
Birds of Paradise
Gladecover Scout
Manic Vandal
Firebreathing
Gladecover Scout
Llanowar Elves
Reverberate
Fling
Tormented Soul
Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Grim Lavamancer
Incinerate
Goblin War Paint
Lava Axe
Gladecover Scout
Llanowar Elves
Mesa Enchantress
Llanowar Elves
Fog
Slaughter Cry
Sacred Wolf
Reclaim
Brink of Disaster
Unsummon
Island

Round 3:
Jade Mage
Shock
Act of Treason
Bonebreaker Giant
Goblin Fireslinger
Trollhide
Naturalize
Lava Axe
Goblin Piker
Goblin War Paint
Bountiful Harvest
Jace's Erasure
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain

EDIT: went back and drafted again, knowing the Jace was coming, and I think I drafted one of the best possible limited mill decks ever, with Jace, 4 Jace's Erasure, 2 Merfolk Mesmerists and a nice set of discard/removal/bounce.

Round 1:
Pride Guardian
Divination
Wring Flesh
Mind Rot
Distress
Aether Adept
Negate
Merfolk Mesmerist
Ice Cage
Jace's Erasure
Reverberate
Fling
Naturalize
Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Doom Blade
Mana Leak
Aether Adept
Cancel
Merfolk Mesmerist
Unsummon
Jace's Erasure
Glacial Fortress
Demystify
Slaughter Cry
Wring Flesh
Turn to Frog
Phantasmal Bear
Coral Merfolk
Island

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Aether Adept
Distress
Jace's Erasure
Redirect
Frost Breath
Naturalize
Jace's Erasure
Ice Cage
Demystify
Brindle Boar
Lifelink
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain

Knowing what I know now, I am going to go back and re-draft, but...  R/G is where I went.  First pick was a tough one for me because I can see where the Rare in pack 1 could lead to some very interesting drafts.

[sblock Draft R/G]
Round 1:
Cudgel Troll
Chandra's Outrage
Shock
Greater Basilisk
Birds of Paradise
Blood Ogre
Goblin Grenade
Merfolk Looter
Goblin Tunneler
Goblin Fireslinger
Reverberate
Fling
Tormented Soul
Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Grim Lavamancer
Incinerate
Gorehorn Minotaurs
Turn to Frog
Trollhide
Llanowar Elves
Unsummon
Llanowar Elves
Goblin Piker
Sorin's Thirst
Sacred Wolf
Reclaim
Gladecover Scout
Disentomb
Island

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Shock
Runeclaw Bear
Bonebreaker Giant
Lure
Goblin Piker
Naturalize
Lava Axe
Goblin Tunneler
Llanowar Elves
Bountiful Harvest
Jace's Erasure
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain
[/sblock]

Creatures (16):
Llanowar Elves x 3
Birds of Paradise
Grim Lavamancer
Goblin Fireslinger
Runeclaw Bear
Goblin Tunneler x 2
Goblin Piker x 2
Blood Ogre
Cudgel Troll
Gorehorn Minotaurs
Greater Basilisk
Bonebreaker Giant

Spells (8):
Shock x 2
Goblin Grenade
Incinerate
Reverberate
Fling
Lure
Chandra's Outrage

Land (16):
Mountain x 8
Forest x 8

I have alot more Red than Green but chose to balance the land because of the mana producing green creatures.  I am looking for a 1 drop to hit almost every hand, so with 4/6 being green, I wanted to be sure I have one to start...

Then my re-draft knowing Jace was there:

[sblock Miller Time]
Round 1:
Cudgel Troll
Divination
Garruk's Companion
Greater Basilisk
Garruk's Companion
Aether Adept
Negate
Merfolk Looter
Ice Cage
Llanowar Elves
Flight
Elvish Archdruid
Tormented Soul
Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Merfolk Looter
Mana Leak
Overrun
Arachnus Web
Ice Cage
Llanowar Elves
Unsummon
Llanowar Elves
Fog
Blood Seeker
Sacred Wolf
Turn to Frog
Merfolk Mesmerist
Disentomb
Island

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Aether Adept
Runeclaw Bear
Manalith
Redirect
Rites of Flourishing
Fog
Frost Breath
Ice Cage
Llanowar Elves
Bountiful Harvest
Jace's Erasure
Dragon's Claw
Taste of Blood
Mountain
[/sblock]

How can you not want to play with Jace?

Creature (14):
Llanowar Elves x 4
Merfolk Looter x 2
Runeclaw Bear
Garruk's Companion x 2
Aether Adept x 2
Elvish Archdruid
Cudgel Troll
Greater Basilisk

Spells (10):
Unsummon
Ice Cage x 3
Turn to Frog
Divination
Frost Breath
Arachnus Web
Jace, Memory Adept
Overrun

Lands (16):
Forest x 8
Island x 8

Two win conditions: Jace, Memory Adept and Overrun
Use the Merfolk Looter to find one of them, and use Elves to speed things along.

There is the remote chance of a turn 4 win.
Opening Hand: Forest x 2; Llanowar Elves x 4; Elvish Archdruid  - You do have to draw the 8th card Overrun, but we live in the perfect world, right?

Turn 1: Forest + Llanowar Elves
Turn 2: Forest + Elvish Archdruid
Turn 3: Llanowar Elves + Llanowar Elves + Llanowar Elves + attack for 2
Turn 4: tap Elvish Archdruid to cast Overrun and attack with 4 - Trampling 5/5 Llanowar Elves for 20.

Of course you also can have a turn 3 Jace, Memory Adept with this starting 7:
Forest - Island x 2 - Llanowar Elves - Elvish Archdruid - Jace, Memory Adept

Either way you make your opponent whine.  And who wouldn't love that reaction?

I found this weeks draft very hard. I ended up ninja-ing some rares because my other picks were either not worth it or... in the case of Jace it is what I would have done in real life anyways. I started out going... I don't know about any of these cards and grabbed the rare. Then I saw a nice control burn spell so I grabbed it.

In the end I went R/G. It is probably not the greatest and I might not have the best show of winning but I'd probably still go home happy with this draft.

Round 1:
Adaptive Automaton
Chandra's Outrage
Reverberate
Bonebreaker Giant
Birds of Paradise
Gladecover Scout
Runeclaw Bear
Firebreathing
Brindle Boar
Llanowar Elves
Sacred Wolf
Elvish Archdruid
Naturalize
Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Grim Lavamancer
Incinerate
Sacred Wolf
Lava Axe
Trollhide
Llanowar Elves
Mesa Enchantress
Glacial Fortress
Goblin Piker
Slaughter Cry
Sutured Ghoul
Turn to Frog
Gladecover Scout
Unsummon
Island

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Shock
Brindle Boar
Bonebreaker Giant
Lure
Brindle Boar
Naturalize
Lava Axe
Goblin Piker
Llanowar Elves
Bountiful Harvest
Lifelink
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain

Started out R/G dinosaurs, swapped to R/B aggro in pack 2 after seeing the Vampire, attempted to go R/U aggro tempo in pack 3, but it doesn't look like the cards are panning out.

Falcon_UK probably has the right idea with just counting Jace as a hate pick, but I couldn't help but try to play him because he just wins game all on his own.  Unfortunatley the rest of the blue is mediocre at best....=S  I think I'm going to go R/B as well....just MIGHT try to splash Jace and see what happens.  I did manage to pick up a manalith so...

Round 1:
Cudgel Troll
Chandra's Outrage
Shock
Elvish Archdruid
Blood Ogre
Blood Ogre
Runeclaw Bear
Firebreathing
Goblin Tunneler
Goblin Fireslinger
Reverberate
Fling

Demystify
Forest

Round 2:
Grim Lavamancer
Sengir Vampire
Gorehorn Minotaurs
Tormented Soul
Lava Axe
Goblin Arsonist
Dark Favor
Fiery Hellhound
Goblin Piker
Blood Seeker
Sutured Ghoul
Wall of Torches
Gladecover Scout
Unsummon
Island

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Aether Adept
Act of Treason
Manalith
Negate
Frost Breath
Amphin Cutthroat
Lava Axe
Phantasmal Bear
Sundial of the Infinite
Flight
Jace's Erasure
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain

Creatures (15)

Non-Creatures (8)
[deck]
1x Shock
1x Fling
1x Manalith
1x Act of Treason
1x Chandra's Outrage
1x Jace, Memory Adept
2x Lava Axe
[/deck]

Lands (17)
[deck]
3x Island
7x Mountain
7x Swamp
[/deck]

I dunno about the deck.  If I were to cut jace I'd swap in the reverberate for him and go 9/8 swamps/mountains.

It'd probably be better if I didn't attempt to swap to R/U in pack 3, but what's done is done.  Hm... I'm going to go back and retry pack 3 again (still taking jace), but thist time keeping R/B as the goal:

pack 3 repick (same picks in pack 1 and 2)

Round 3:
Jace, Memory Adept
Shock
Act of Treason
Manalith
Devouring Swarm
Smallpox
Hideous Visage
Lava Axe
Zombie Goliath
Sundial of the Infinite
Flight
Lifelink
Bountiful Harvest
Taste of Blood
Mountain

Repicking the deck...
Creatures (16)
[deck]
1x Goblin Fireslinger
1x Goblin Arsonist
1x Grim Lavamancer
2x Tormented Soul
1x Goblin Tunneler
1x Goblin Piker
1x Blood Seeker
2x Blood Ogre
1x Fiery Hellhound
1x Devouring Swarm
1x Gorehorn Minotaurs
1x Zombie Goliath
1x Sengir Vampire
1x Sutured Ghoul
[/deck]

Non-Creatures (7)
[deck]
2x Shock
1x Manalith
1x Act of Treason
1x Chandra's Outrage
1x Jace, Memory Adept
1x Lava Axe
[/deck]

Lands (17)
[deck]
3x Island
7x Mountain
7x Swamp
[/deck]

Deck differences
-1x Wall of Torches
-1x Fling
-1x Lava Axe

+1x Devouring Swarm
+1x Zombie Goliath
+1x Shock

Hm...that Sutured Ghoul is still hard on the mana base...I dunno.  If Jace went out this time I'd cut him for the second Lava Axe.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

Red was wide open.  Serra Angel finally tilted me to a white augmentation, I considered taking Grim Lavamancer instead and would have if I'd known Jace was coming.  Going for Jace over a marginal Roc Egg in Pack 3 seemed to be justified preemptive removal, considing that guy can easily win by himself without ever going ulitmate.  I could reasonably go RU and include him, but I think my stronger synergy with white makes RW the preferred choice: a game two switch is always possible.Wink

Any thoughts on my BU control-ish deck?

My feeling is that most people who tried for "force" in black this week will find the card pool to choose from is pretty thin.  Other than 1 Doom Blade you find your self with 3 creatures (all 1/1s) and a bunch of iffy black cards.  Your Blue drafting is good control with spells, but your creatures, all 6 of them (including Adaptive Automaton ) , only have 2 toughness, which will make control harder.

To me your creatures seem more aggro based, other than Aether Adept and Merfolk Mesmerist.  I think you will find that your deck has only 1 real win condition, and not many ways to help it get there.  You need either more draw/sift or better board control creatures to work with your board control spells.

Not sure if your drafting of 3 Aven Fleetwing is coincidence or shows your preference for the card, but if you go for that many hexproofs you are probably better off going U/G where you get more hexproof options and more pumps to make them formidable.

Is this a good set to pick?  going for red/green aggro have some combos going on greater basilisk and lure.

Show me the deck you would build from this and I will let you know.  As for the Lure + Greater Basilisk combo, keep in mind you have to do damage with a deathtouch for it to actually kill, so with 3 power he can kill a max of 3 creatures at a time.  But where Lure usually is nasty in draft is on the killing move, to suck all defenders to a low power creatures so all the rest of the horde can get through for the lethal blow to end the game.

I first chose Adaptive Automation, and then from there chose what I figured were the next best cards. It started with Reds, and then also blues. If you haven't guessed, I'm an utter noob at this. I read the previous post and saw words like aggro and BU, RU, WU... and so on. Can anyone just send me a message on what some of these terms mean and others I am probably unfamiliar with. Also, please give me some feedback on the cards I drew... and haha, I got Jace, first draft. I'll do another draft after I get some feedback. And to note, I didn't always go with some of the hints. I looked at cards I may wanted and see if the hints matched any of them. If I did, I took it, If it didn't, I took what I wanted anyways. lol.
