Value of cards after they rotate out of Standard?

Ive only been playing a month, and I have invested a good amount into a few standard decks.  I am wondering come October, will the value of my cards that are rotating out drop dramatically?  Should I start to sell off around the summer time so not to take a huge loss?
Why not keep them and use them to play with friends? I have cards from tempest that I refuse to sell.
I only play at FNM, none of my friends play magic.  So holding onto them if I wont be able to use them seems like a bad idea, IF they drop their value.  If they hold their value then I dont need to really get rid of them.  I just dont want to lose a boat load of money ive spend on these three standard decks

just do what I do and whenever you go to FNM bring along your casual deck so you have some fun with older cards. Hell, I even build decks for the sole purpose of playing casual at FNM

I actually have a sort of related question, so I'll just ask here instead of making a new thread.

I am in the market for Mutavaults. They are very expensive at the moment. Is there anything coming up in the foreseeable future that could cause the price to drop? Is it rotating out of any format or anything like that?

Nothing immediately foreseeable.
You may be better off getting Mishra's Factory instead (about $5), unless you need Changeling for some reason.

I already have factories standing in for them. I do, in fact, need changeling. I'm running a sort of traditional form of fish and I'd greatly appreciate 3/3 or 5/5 manlands swinging every turn. As it stands I actually feel sad when I look at the board and realize they should be swinging for a lot more than they are.

No. Two factors may cause minor downward pressure on Mutavault prices. One is that Merfolk decks are losing ground to RUG Delver in Legacy, so Fish fans may be selling off their Mutavaults. The other is that Mutavault may (nothing is confirmed) be featured in From the Vault: Realms this August, which can cause a price shift of about 5% downward. Overall, I predict Mutavault will go down slightly in the future, but nothing drastic will happen. Buy it now if you want copies.

To answer the original question, Standard staples do drop off after rotating out. It's partially based on supply in the market, so a card will start to drop in late August and hit a floor much later. The existence of Modern has made this floor much higher, but it's still a good idea to move your Standard staples in September right before they rotate out.
all prices will drop at least 50% after they rotate out, unless they are also heavily played in modern...

because like the OP said, you're cards become worthless after rotation if you don't want/can't play for fun...

Ouch, thats a big hit

If the card is useful for Commander, Modern, or Legacy, it will probably retain most of its value (though it may drop some, depending on how useful it is in those formats), and could even see a gradual increase over time as new copies of the card aren't entering the market very often.

If the card isn't useful for any format outside of Standard, then the card value will plummet after rotation.
You are Red/Blue!
So for a new player that only plays standard ATM, how do you evaluate if a card will be playable in other formats?  I am playing with a WRR deck FYI.

I used to be in your position, OP. I only played Standard (and Limited), so when rotation was on the horizon I would trade off all the cards that were about to rotate out. However, in the past year or two I have started playing other formats (EDH, Extended, Pauper), so more of my cards continue to be useful. At some point I suppose I am going to have to start playing Modern too (if Extended is dropped as an official format *shudder*), and at the point none of my cards will rotate ever again.

On one hand this is good because I am playing more diverse formats, and less of my collection becomes useless every year. On the other hand, I am having to spend more money every year because I am holding onto more cards that I would have traded away in the past. Hmm...

Are there any other tournaments you could play in? If not, you could always ask your TO to consider running them.

In short, yes, cards will lose value after they rotate out.  If you are getting cards for the sole purpose of playing in standard tournaments then yes I'd sell M12-New Phyrexia NOW and get ready for the new block.
You are Red/Blue! Copies of Tobias Andrion so far: Twenty Three!! I'm Johnny/Spike. I want to win, but I want to win with fun and awesome deck ideas and/or great card combos.

Merfolk decks are losing ground to RUG Delver in Legacy, so Fish fans may be selling off their Mutavaults.

I just beat a fully tooled RUG Delver build 2-0 with fish.

Get trolled, Delver. Get trolled.

Wait, you are considering selling your Standard cards because you only play in FNM, so it's only Standard format, but want a set of mutavaults for your Legacy Fish deck? And you said you just played it against Legacy RUG Delver? I don't get it.

I'd agree that Standard sucks for a lot of reasons, but its really not the players' fault that those cards are so pricey, it's how the competitive Magic scene uses it as the go-to format for everything. Draft and standard make up 90% of the pros' lives, I'd imagine because those formats happen to create a lot of demand for the latest stuff they're printing.

Standard players often complain how expensive it is to get into the older eternal formats, but rotations of seasons of standard will easily cost you as much as one legacy deck that will last forever. More importantly, you can always play with your favorite cards and you're never forced to play with cards you don't really like just because they're all that's available in the format.

But yeah... I don't blame the players because they really have nothing to do with it. It's just the way they've designed the pro events and their business model.

Keep them and prepare for Modern! :D
