Yall are lucky! I wish I could come play pre-release. I'm in Spain TDY... Looking at the new cards, it appears to lean more towards humans/angels.

Good luck this weekend guys!
I am not going to a pre-release. I'm going to an anime convention instead.

I ran UGw, splashing for Divine Deflection, Terminus, and Banishing Stroke. The deck was mostly evasion creatures and pump creatures, with a few equipment and a Tandem Lookout that provided me with many cards. I went 4-2-0 in the first 6 rounds and then lost the quarter finals. Got 3 packs as a prize and opened Sigarda, Host of Herons in one of them.
I went to two prereleases.  I recieved no Mythic Rare cards at all.  My only rare of any value was Vexing Devil.  I won no prizes.  The promo card was Moonsilver Spear, and I recieved that as one of my rares both days.  I also got Champion of Lambholt as a rare both days.    FML

Contrary to the impression given in another thread of mine here, I didn't even GET a promo - the place I went to said that because the event was a Helvault event that they wouldn't hand out the promo cards given the "special nature" of the event.

Sounds like they stole your promos. Give them a chance to give them back, and if they dont report them to Wizards.

Make sure your paperwork is stright with S1 or you may never see your TDY pay. And if you have a gov't travel card, remember it is for legit expenses only. If you get silly with it, they will catch you. And they won't catch you right away, it could be weeks or months later.

I did the Planar Chaos pre-release back when I was in Germany. It was rough trying to remember what the cards did from spoilers, my command of the German language being limited to numbers, hello, good-bye, thank you, and "Allo, menu zwei, mit kaese, cola, maxi."

It just feels a bit intimidating for me to be one of the few if any to go and say [much more politely, of course], "Excuse me,, what the ****?" - how should I best approach this?

Fortunately, one of the guys there [who went to the event as well] is in my college Calculus class, so before, after, or during the break our prof. gives us, I'll fill him in.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. Something like "Oh it turns out we were supposed to get those promos afterall. Can I get mine now while Im here?"
This gives them a chance to make things right without a big confrontation (and without them potentially closing down).

Another point I'd like to bring up:  I was at my LGS for the prerelease, but it looked like only those who popped a seal on the Helvault actually got stuff from the helvault - tokens, oversized cards, die/dice - and I did see unclaimed tokens, lots of them, dice [again lots of them], and some of the oversized cards get put into a box and stowed instead of distributing them amongst all the 30-something people who joined in.  Whats your take on that?
Travel, I believe the stuff should have been distributed. These are ways stores can keep the stuff and have people buy them for a higher price two or three years later because they were promo items.

Based on the two things I mentioned in this thread as being observed, should I report them to WotC, at least if communications with them don't get anywhere?

Yes, if they wont correct their mistake, you report them to Wizards.

So I inquired about it on their Facebook page in a "Oh, I noticed this happened, maybe I missed something..." kind of way, and this is their response:

The Helvault event didn't they got helvault promos. Everyone at midnight and the 6pm saturday and the two headed giant sunday got one.

Now, my biggest problem in replying to that is that I don't want to sound like a demanding a-hole, anybody else have that problem when dealing with an issue regarding a LGS and their handling of stuffs?
"I contacted Wizards, and apparently everyone was supposed to get one.  This is a card I was really looking forward to, would it be too much trouble for me to come in and pick one up please?"

For some reason I can't help but wonder if the contacting WotC part sounds too confrontational or not.  Hmmm, nid more user input, IMO, before I can say anything in response.

Where in Germany are you stationed? There's a place in downtown Darmstadt where the locals draft. Last I was there (fall of '08) they drafted English cards, and most of the players were pretty proficient in English. Unfortunately, the price for the boosters is kinda high. IIRC, it was around 15 Euros to draft, between packs and fees.

I am in the kmc area (ramstein). It's extemely crazy to play FNM here. I don't have that kind of money.

Talked to a friend today - apparently he went to a midnight game, prerelease, non-helvault.  They had promos, but you had to ASK for them, as in, they made no announcement or anything to say you could get them - he theorizes possibly so people would forget they can get said cards, and have more to horde, but I dunno.  I wager this happened at many of their non-Helvault events, and nobody at EITHER helvault event got promo cards.

and keeping up with the FB convo: [First bullet == me, in italics, other two == store[in bold]:

  • I was confused since I read on the WotC site that the promos would be given out based on availability, and not based on the type of event - that is ,people at both Helvault and Non-helvault events would get one [and that was certainly the impression I got when signing up]

  • They do not send nearly enough for everyone so we used the spears for the non helvault events. It wouldnt be fair to have one tournament get everything and then have players get nothing the next day. The way it was done we literally had enough that the last person in sundays event got the final spear. The helvaults contained multiple items as well for each player so you got even more than the other players.

  • I am sorry if you were confused. If you really want a spear ill trade someone for one and its yours.

This seems really fishy to me. Wizards sends enough promo's to the events to cover everyone, and they should have plenty extra since they did not pass them out at TWO events. Seems to me this store is trying to placate you so you don't report them by "trading" someone (probably going in the back and getting one). Also, the fact that they said they had "just enough" is incredibly strange. I've never seen a game store have just enough promo's. I'm not sure how to respond to them, however I would definitely report the store.

Sounds tempting - but riddled with its own internal conflicts - mostly because of how overly analytical I am.

I should, before anything, disclaim to them that my slow response times is caused by the studying I have to do for final exams.  ~_~

"If you really want a spear ill trade someone for one and its yours."

There you go.  That sounds like a good offer, I would say "Thank you very much, I would like to take you up on that generous offer. When can I come in?"

If you sounded like a more confrontational/aggressive person, I'd say report them to Wizards... but you appear to be happier without creating that extra conflict, so I'd say go for the sketchy trade offer and finish the situation with a promo Moonsliver Spear in your possession.

IMAGE(http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg152/jdealer90/RandomAnimal.jpg)

There lies a problem within that idea:  Why should I have to trade my stuff with someone from the store, just to get something they should have given me and everyone who attended that event/events in the first place?  What cheek!

Much as I don't like confrontations, I will have to put my foot down on that one.  What cheek!

EDIT: And wouldn't an employee saying they'd trade me for one just add fuel to my case if I DID report them to WotC?
EDIT: And wouldn't an employee saying they'd trade me for one just add fuel to my case if I DID report them to WotC?

Sounds to me like what's going on is that they said they'd trade a Spear off of someone else and give that Spear to you. Not that they'd get one and then trade it to you.

Attacking the darkness since 1987, turning creatures sideways since 1994.

Ah, I **did** misread it - I am groggy as I went to sleep around 1:30 and got woken up at 5 by a massive thunderstorm, fell back asleep by 6 and got up 2 hours later.Yell

Either way, while tempting as it may be, it wouldn't account for those beside me who didn't get one, and should, doesn't say anything about future accountability, and then there's this weird thing about me, where I'm thinking "tempting, but I won't be satisfied if I get one that is in used shape, worn out, bent up or anything to ANY extent - I want one perfect, unused, and new, like I should have gotten to begin with"
It is possible they effectively ran out of promos. It happenned at my shop once. They gave all the promos in the first event, because they wanted to give one to everybody. The second event, there were four remaining, and none for the third. Another time, they decided they'd give cards to preregistered players before the others.

Wizards sends promos for the approximate number of people announced. If twenty more appear out of nowhere, there won't be enough promos for everyone.

The store seems sincerely sorry that they didn't have enough. They even offer to trade for one, effectively paying for it! Unless it does the same thing repetively, I wouldn't think they're trying to screw anyone. This seems prefectly legit.

Sure his power level leaves very little to the imagination (opening Jace is like opening a refrigerator box with a naked girl on the inside), and sure his price does have a strong impact on what players choose to play (playing Jace is like being intimate with a woman and she doesn't charge you in the morning), but it is not the source of all the problems in Standard.

How do people think saving room to print more abilities on cards is dumbing down the game?

Do you really think, say, Akroma would ever be printed if she said, "Akroma can block by creatures with this ability and cannot be blocked by creatures without this ability.  If a creature without this ability would deal combat damage by Akroma would be destroyed, prevent all combat damage that creature would deal to Akroma this combat.  Attacking does not cause Akroma to tap.  If Akroma is blocked and deals lethal damage, it deals the remainder of its damage to the defending player.  Akroma may attack and use abilities that require tapping in the casting cost the turn it enters the battlefield.  Akroma cannot be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by black or red sources" rather than her "dumbed down" wording she has?  No freaking way.  Keywording and shorthand allows them to make complicated cards easy to play with, allowing them to be printed in the first place.

He proceeds to wring his hands and twirl his evil mustache that he grew for twirling purposes as a lightning bolt strikes in the background. Afterwards, he goes to make sure that the good cards are only opened by everyone's friends, and that we all only get to open bad cards. He does this by memorising each booster, than switching them around accordingly. Whenever someone complains about a card, he immediately jumps out from behind a chair to yell "WELL, IT'S NOT FOR YOU!" before merging back into the shadows in order to devise new ways in which he can screw over players, then claim that he has valid reasons for doing so.

But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

If you don't talk to anyone, that increases the odds that no one will talk to you.

JuliusPringle wrote:

So how do I just... introduce myself? "Hi, my name is Adam, wanna play magic with me?" Do I go to the counter and talk to the cashier?

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

Well, for one, it was already established that they had non-helvault events before and after the one I went to, and they got promos.

Let's say Wizards sent them 100 promos. Let's say they had 150 preinscriptions. They decided that if they were to run out of promos, they'd skip the Hlevault events, since those players already got some. They'd keep them for those who had nothing yet.

That's a possibility.

Makes me really feel lucky that I don't live in a very large city. The store here got 2 Helavaults with each containing 54 over-sized cards, 54 Dice and 54 tokens. The store held a total of 4 events.

The midnight prerelease which did not get to open Helavault, but got the promo.

The 2nd event held at noon the next day, opened the Helavault and everyone got one dice, one over-sized card and one token, one prize booster and the promo.

The 3rd event didn't get any thing from the Helavault as it was just people who wanted to play another flight when they didn't get Top 8, but they were given two prize boosters.

The 4th and final event got to open the 2nd Helavault and due to the low number of people, everyone got 2 of everything, plus the promo, plus 1 prize booster.

Anything they did not give out, then goes to supplement FNM and other event prizes throughout the year, they don't keep any of it to sell later on.

So yeah, I would report your store because that is messed up that they couldn't sort out the stuff to give everyone something and instead decided to hoard most of the stuff to sell later.
Right now, I am only concerned with the handling of promos - tempted to take them up on their offer of trading somebody for one, but that doesn't settle anything regarding everyone else who weren't given one, nor does it adress them pulling similar shenannigans in the future, and part of me is still weary about whether or not them doing this offer would get me a card in perfect shape, like it would be if I had gotten it fresh at the prerelease - which if the card isn't, I'd be tempted to turn down.

There are two things there :

1) A promo card is often kept in a binder, and is Near-Mint. It shouldn't be a problem.
2) If it's the first time, wait until they do it again. Maybe they did their best. Maybe they'll learn a lesson and won't do it again.

5. play a mox lotus and braingeyser them for every card in their library. play an opalescence and donate them a glorious anthem and a blacker lotus, then play enchanted evening. play and activate a mindslaver and then donate them a fastbond and the mox lotus (returning one of the donates to your hand with eternal witness or whatever)
6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

This flow, sometimes called convection, is cited by frustrated box mappers as one of WOTC's most genious uses of thermodynamics since the Ravnica block. No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

Your advice would only lead me to make generic, boring, and unworthy content. It's of no use to me.
I just got this image of you as an architect, having finished a building suspended by only a small pole in its southwest corner, saying it's original. Then the building collapses.

GM, I don't think Dill is better than you. I KNOW it. Even if he wakes up every morning, clubs a baby seal, steals all the TV remotes from within a block's radius of his house and then robs hungry orphans of their food he'd be better than you, for the simple reason that he learns from his mistakes.

Tamiyo vs. Gideon
What would they have to fight about? Like, all I can think of now is Gideon going "Hey, long-ears! I'm gathering a group of 'Walkers together to fight some tentacle monsters.....you want in?" and Tamiyo going "Ew! Hentai no bakka Gideon-desu desu!" and flying away.

MaRo has a thing for people opening boosters with bad cards. But since he can only get so many bad cards printed in each set, he has found a devious way of getting more bad cards into circulation: He makes entire print sheets with just bad rares, then puts them onto the assembly line.

Sitting nearby are two hardened criminal hackers, fresh out of prison, and filled with resentment at their lack of physical fitness. "Have you managed to hack his brainwaves yet? The set deadline's coming up fast." "We're almost through. It should be coming up on the screen any second." The hacker presses a button, and Kevin's thoughts flash onto the screen. Mark and the hackers stare in amazement at the sheer beauty, the elegance, and the raw truth of what they see. It's like the ending to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Brilliant light shines across the screen, the truth of existence is made clear to them, and they despair at their own foolishness, their own ignorance, their own inadequacy. And then they steal his ideas. As they return back to R&D, Mark sneers at a haggard old man chained to a cast-iron sphere. The man looks up from his laborious task of breaking rocks in the dungeon of Wizards of the Coast headquarters, and asks a question: "Kevin, my greatest student. He - he's all right, isn't he? You didn't hurt him?" Mark deals him a weighty blow with his boot. "Know your place, Richard. Get back to work."

I'm only opposed to it because it bears so little relation to how people actually play the game. The example of Miracles is actually a much better one then the Clone example I was trying to use. From the game's perspective, the card can move instantly from face down in the library to revealed in the hand and that's fine for the rules. But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of
183664.697 A game of Magic as laid out by these rules exists only as a pure Platonic ideal, utterly unrealizable by fallible mortals limited by the confines of physicality and the ravages of evil and sin. 183664.698 The cake is a lie, too.
I know it's true, but I don't want the rules to actually straight-up tell me that.
