Custom M13 Set Community Draft

Let's do a community draft using a custom Core set!

This is a fan M13 set that uses the Kird Ape mechanic as the returning mechanic. There will be real drafters drafting for the other seats. I hope you guys enjoy this. While it's still at a very unpolished stage, it could be fun as a kind of wacky draft with unknown cards.

*If you are interested in the set, there's more info at Goblin Artisans.
*I posted this thread here because I would like to present the set to draft enthusiasts, but if it happens that this thread doesn't belong in this forum, I would be grateful if the moderators could move it to the You Make the Card forum. (We donate all of these ideas to Wizards of the Coast, whether it's posted here or on YmtC).
*We'll be grateful for any comments, but if you suggest any specific designs or card tweaks, please only do so with suggestions that you don't mind us using and offering to Wizards of the Coast!

I really enjoy imagining this from Kevin's perspective. Because in Kevin's world, Rosewater actually reads everything he types. Mark is sitting there right now, reading this, and thinking "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled. . ." Or some such. He chuckles low, then clicks on "The Best Of KEVINSET" and says "Yes, this'll do just fine. A busty lady with banding who deals direct damage to Zones!? Why this will be the star of my next set, and no one will ever believe you Kevin." Then he closes his Macbook, so his servant may move it out of the way, while another servant puts a Fetal Richard Garfield Clone lathered in Steak Sauce in front of him. Then Mark Feasts. I mean, In KevinWorld, Mark is reading the very words I'm typing as well. Heck, in KevinWorld maybe I am Mark.

[In response to a thread about how hard grading is] Upon reading this, I've found myself completely unable to operate in the world. I tried to decide what to eat for breakfast, and pondered the vast consequences of my choice. How do I balance my dietary needs against my desire to eat good-tasting food? Should I factor in how long it takes to prepare? Cereal is ready in moments, but bacon takes longer to cook. Then there is the impact on other industries. Do people in the cereal industry deserve to be employed more than people in the bacon industry? Which industry should I support? I don't even have the data regarding HOW MUCH the cereal industry benefits from me eating a bowl of cereal, or how much the bacon industry benefits from me eating a side of bacon. How can I compare two qualities I can't even quantify? And let's not forget the milk on the cereal. In addition to determining whether or not milk is healthy for me, how much that benefits the milk industry, and how much the people in the milk industry deserve my support, we have to factor in the fact that cows are put under brutal conditions in order to collect thier milk. Of course, the same goes for the pigs, and then they get killed. Of course, I really like bacon. So I need to come up with a scale that compares the value of cow happiness to pig happiness to my happiness. What trade-offs am I willing to make here? Does the fact that the pig gets put out of its misery count as a plus or a minus? Isn't bacon bad for me anyway? Deciding what to eat for breakfast (or any meal) is impossible. Help me!

Anyway, you'd be surprised about Time Stop. When I first saw that card as a relatively new player I didn't see its full potential until I read the reminder text. Is it that unintuitive, though? Mine I mean. What is possibility? Is it possible for me to type these words with my tusks? No, because I don't have tusks. Although I am now tempted to go buy some - obviously not from poachers or whatever - and use them as typing apparatus. I could be the best secretary ever. "What's your words per minute sir?" "Well, only six, but I use these tusks to type them." "You're hired!" That was the interview. And is anyone else disappointed that "apparati" is not the plural form of apparatus? I just could strangle a dictionary, because "apparatuses" is a real word. I guess it sounds pretty cool. I'll call them my Apparatusks.
Lots of good picks, including CKY's pick.  The bomb looks really damaging and I also like the U/W flyer for 4cmc.  The pirate could also be good but it's the kind of card I would take later in the draft.

I'll also go with Ghostly Mentor, 4 power in black + 2 cards is just great.

I'm going to say Gorger Hydra because that thing is just mean.
I think I agree it is between those 3.  Not knowing how archetypes set up, we probably shouldn't go Pteron, since its the only U/W skies card here...

Mentor is amazingly powerful, probably constructed worthy, as a 3-1 with a marginal drawback.  Hydra is a near game-ender, but I'm not sure it can turn around a game you're losing, especially against something like an Air Elemental.

I'm going Mentor, but I have no problem with any of those.

Best cards are the Howling Silverback and Champion of Purity (who should be an elephant like every other loxodons (loxodon gatekeeper)).  But neither of those cards are as good as our first pick and both stretches in other directions colorwise.  I'll just pick the 1 damage burn spell with cantrip, Runebrand.

Howling Silverback

Green looks good in this core set.
First instinct is Runebrand.  However, I realize I haven't seen a lot of 1-toughness.  I'm not ready to commit to 3-colors yet, so Champion and Mastodon are out.  It's really between Silverback and Runebrand.  I'm going to cross my fingers and take runebrand, hoping we just haven't seen the little guys yet.

As an aside, rules question: Do you have an opportunity to respond to a land being played which upgrades a creature?  Or is it just a state-based effect with no trigger?  My instinct is the latter, which would definitely hurt Runebrand.  Chah, if this is a test on the limited viability, I would recommend making sure RB has enough targets to be useful, such as how Innistrad really was built to show off Geistflame.

That's a great point. There are a couple of X/1 evasive guys, but we don't have many fragile utility guys.
You're right that Bond is a state-based effect with no trigger. Runebrand is a sorcery anyways, but it could be confusing that you can't respond to a Kird Ape getting bigger with a forest with a Shock. A beginner might wonder, "how is that different from responding to an Aura with a shock?" I haven't thought of that.

Hmm...I hadn't noticed the double-doubling potential, good catch.  Taking that into account, I will agree on Firebird, though the Imp is probably going to be very good, especially if it were to Disentomb out Mentor.

firebird. also a note: I have seen one piece of fixing so far. a multicolor theme with no fixing is very dangerous, design-wise.

You have a really good point.

We didn't want to support heavy 3-color play in a core set, because if playing heavily in 3 colors becomes the "strategically correct" appraoch to the set, life will be hell for beginners who are just learning about combat and instants and don't know how to build a complex mana base. That would really lock them out of winning.

This approach may well be a mistake because the Kird Apes will cause many players to think of heavy multicolor play, and there's no way to communicate what density of land-fixing support there will be through the contents of one booster. (Although these Kird Apes appeared in Worldwake too and that was not a multicolor set.)

If there are multicolor elements in the real M13, I'll be looking forward to seeing how they solved this problem. If they have multicolor cards in the real M13, maybe they will only appear in higher rarity like Uncommon, or only on a few cards like Nicol Bolas. Or maybe off-color activated abilites are easier to work with than Bond.

missed Ranger. so two pieces.

There's also the Blue 1/1 tapper that shifts lands, although it may turn out to suck. Maybe it should be a 2/3 or something.
Goblin Artisans - A Magic Design Blog by GDS2 Contestants and Collaborators
Cadaver Imp.  Great Axe would be good but let's take some creatures first, especially a good one.

Also, since you ask for critique of the set, I hope you won't mind if I do critique the flavor (and sound pedantic).  Flaring Firebird is a phoenix, but the flavor of phoenix is that they can be reborn.  I don't think WotC ever printed a phoenix without an auto-built recursion.  For that reason, I believe the firebird should be elemental.

Cadaver Imp though I don't mind Frost Ogre and the axe isn't bad either.
Imp.

also, I feel like the kird ape mechanic is a little too vague to be the "returning mechanic" anyway. it's not like it was ever a set mechanic. in worldwake it was a single uncommon cycle. the returning mechanics are supposed to be things that were memorable parts of their sets. up until you mentioned I didn't remember loam lion was part of a cycle. if you wanted to return something from Zendikar Landfall would've been much better, but I also feel like the returning mechanics should be as simple as possible, which means actual keywords are probably better.

120.6. Some effects replace card draws.
Cadaver Imp
