F- four decks? *claps*
Gotta <3 Ghave
Well done, Adam. I've always liked the 2nd person standpoint in writing (or in this case deckbuilding).
I have to give some credit where credit is due:

  1. Trick, our fearless content specialist behind the scenes, gave his blessing for this little number.

  2. Mike, the silent but ever-present editor, detected an anomaly while editing "a few" words.

  3. I would assume that master image-maker Tom handled the digital scenery and buttons.

I definitely had the idea, but it's takes an even better team to make it happen. Here's to the guys behind the curtain!

Sorin, Lord of Innistrad is an awesome option that seems to be conspicuously missing. I agree.

Here's a secret: I built all these decks using my "Commander Box" of cards that I use to... build Commander decks. Since I don't have a "new Sorin" yet he missed the cut.

On the flip side, every card I included is available and ready for a deck. Whatever the outcome I'll be 100% ready. (And, if I get a little lucky in the next week or so, I can shoehorn the Lord right in anyway.)

Adam.  I like this particular article.  Brings back the good old days where we used to read books that lead up to different fates and endings (i.e. Goosebumps series by R.L. Stine).  This concept truly captures the essence of what this column is all about - "Serious Fun".  I'm a fan.  2 thumbs up.

By the way Krosan Verge can also dig up a basic plains and a basic forest.  Think you missed out on that one.
Great article. One of my favorites in a while.

Some additional card suggestions:

Phyrexian Tower
Bojuka Bog
Perilous Forays
Regal Force
Great Designer Search 2 Finalist - If you're interested in getting involved, check out my Wiki Page.
I think a Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond combo would work well in either deck.
Since it's clear you read this thread, congratulations to all the work put on this article.
OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Now, now. 1994 doesn't quite qualify as "ancient".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Really? Really? The last couple days have been roughly every perverse fetish imaginable, but it only got "creepy" when speculation on Mother of Runes's mob affiliation came up?

Absolutely. I used to loose to my buddy's Banding deck for ages, it was then that I found out about Tolaria, and I was finally able win my first game.

Playing Magic without Blue is like sleeping without any sheets or blankets. You can do it...but why?

Just do it like Yu-Gi-Oh or monkeys: throw all the crap you got at them and hope it works or else the by-standers (or opponents) just get dirty and pissed.

Normally it's difficult to pick up on your jokes/sarcasm. But this one's pretty much out there. Good progress. You have moved up to Humanoid. You'll be Human in no time.

Thanks for a super cool format article! It looks like it was a lot of work for all the people involved, I really enjoyed going through all of the options you laid out!
Man you put a lot of work into this one, giving us not one, but FOUR different decks.  Having only built one commander deck myself (It's gotta be going on 4 years old now...I love my Azusa/giant fatties deck), I am stunned that you are able to churn out 4 whole commander decks for one article.

I realize you limited your card selection to your "commander building" box, but it's still amazing to me.  Also the non-basic land package you have nearly made me poo myself.  Original dual lands are exxxpeeeennnnsssiiiiiivvveee.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

MaRo: I redesigned him while the effect was on the stack.

Top notch article, top f**king notch!
Definately a great article! *applause* and it's nice to see someone other than Monty is willing to post on his/her own thread.

Not gonna lie - I was really looking forward to this article, and was left disappointed. I run a Ghave deck I've put a lot of love and thought into over the past while, and seeing the exclusion of a few things really, really irked me. Particularly not offering "hybrid", and including simply weak cards like Sengir Autocrat who do nothing more than churn out sac fodder, while being vulnerable to the most common EDH spell (a board wipe). It's clear you didn't make a deck with any plans on dealing with the opponent's board position, so I'll refrain from posting things like Aven Mindcensor and Galepowder Mage (it's an answer to mind control effects AND cards like Mimeo / auras / etc, not to mention swinging + exiling with a Titan).

-Sadistic Hypnotist
-Puppeteer Clique
-Mirari's Wake
-Gavony Township
-Oran-Rief, the Vastwood
-Deserted Temple

I'm aware it takes a mediocre player to suggest cards, and a good one to say what to take out, which I'd gladly oblige, but I don't get paid for it. I will note that Autocrat, Geist-Honored Monk, and Howl of the Nightpack are fairly eh (You have EIGHT FORESTS, 9 with Vesuva).

In contrast, I can appreciate you refraining from showing off combo decks. Nobody likes them and they just either end up getting focused by everyone at the table, or combo off and leave everyone irritated. I will post an old version of my deck though, simply to offer some input from a Ghave-player's perspective. pastebin.com/JSbLhz0t
