This thread is for discussion of this week's Sealed Deck Builder, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.

There's a few changes:
- Fixed a bug related to counting non-basic lands twice for the total deck size.
- Added a sort by Rarity option.
- The window should open at the proper size for some browsers, and can be resized to show scroll bars for those with low screen resolutions.

Total Deck Size: 40
17 Lands
---------------
7 Island
2 Mountain
7 Swamp
1 Shimmering Grotto

15 Creatures
---------------
1 Diregraf Captain
1 Fiend of the Shadows
1 Highborn Ghoul
1 Instigator Gang
1 Mindshrieker
1 Nephalia Seakite
1 Screeching Skaab
1 Selhoff Occultist
1 Skirsdag High Priest
1 Stitched Drake
1 Stormbound Geist
1 Tower Geist
1 Typhoid Rats
1 Wakedancer

8 Other Spells
---------------
1 Blazing Torch
1 Bone to Ash
1 Claustrophobia
1 Death's Caress
1 Griptide
1 Reap the Seagraf
1 Tragic Slip
1 Warden of the Wall

I think the safer deck eschews the red splash for Instigator Gang in favour of slightly more consistent mana, but I think the power of Gang warrants the added risk (it just straight up wins games sometimes, even without flipping). I can see going either way though (probably running a Moon Heron in its place and a 9/8 UB split on lands).

UW turtles and fliers. The splash for Instigator Gang is too good to resist

Am I missing something about this pool?  Shouldn't there be six double-faced cards, not five?  I count these:

- Cloistered Youth
- Chosen of Markov
- Afflicted Deserter
- Instigator Gang
- Tormented Pariah

??? from Dark Ascension.

I feel gypped!

Not the easiest pool to work with here.  Th power cards suggest aggro, but a mix of low to midrange value cards rather than efficient beaters tells me that this could be a mistake.  It seems like the others' decks use more of the fliers, and that might just be the way to go.  This is what I came up with quickly though, and I think it works simply because of the card advantage into bombs like Skirsdag High Priest and Instigator Gang, but I could see a lot of bad draws with this too, you rely on your mulligans a lot with a deck like this, but if you are the kind of player that uses variety to his/her advantage in limited rather than feeling that it is a drawback, this is the build for you(me).

Green was first out. Red second, but I left the Instigator Gang in as a splash. Eventually I decided that Blue had to be in the deck, and that Black was a marginally better choice than White.

Blue and Black are definitely the best colours in this pool imo. I initially wanted to splash maybe Red, but I was happy enough with the UB cards that I don't think straining the mana base is really necessary.

I want to play with the 2 copies of Skirsdag Cultist, so I choose to play RB instead of UB.

Green went away first (just not enough good cards), then white, then red.  Pretty huge number of playables in blue and black, so I could easily see eschewing the splash.   The last card I cut was Wakedancer...I just really didn't see myself being able to trigger Morbid much on my turn.

The "suggest land" still seems a bit wonky.  I tried it after adding the 23 non-land cards and the grotto, and it suggested I add 18 basic lands.

The presence of the Zombie captain makes it tempting to pick U/B, but aside from a handful of picks, the U/B cards are very underwhelming. This is the mistake about half the people at our sealed tournament on launch day made. I drafted a W/R/B instead, and it turned out similar to the deck I won that tournament with. White churns out cheap, fast creatures, especially in the form of Gather the Townsfolk and Midnight Haunting. Red makes it difficult to block them with Pyrehart Wolf, one of the most underrated creatures from the set. Then cards like Break of Day and Instigator Gang pump everything. I splashed black to fill out the last few cards. Tragic Slip, Wakedancer, and Fiend of Shadows are all excellent cards that I don't mind splashing a third color for. You should be able to grind out the first few turns on just white mana while you find your red and black sources.

Blue/black has the best synergies, it has an okey manabase and otherwise strong early drops and removal. Splashing would ruin the consistency of the deck, as well as making it harder to hit eary black while having good mana for the 3mana guys. Could be right to include the second Markov Patrician but it felt for curve purposes needed another twodrop in
Walking Corpse as I need to keep the ground controlled while I win in the air.

Skipped bone to ash as this deck wants to tap out all turns, could still see it boarded in alot of games, and might be better in maindeck. The deck looks strong.

The double  Skirsdag Cultist,  Pyreheart Wolf and  Instigator Gang convinced me to take red as a second color. You can also deck your opponent with the curse and the mindshrieker + combination of  Skirsdag Cultist with  Selhoff Occultist

with this deck I decided to mostly break away from my typical swarm of buffed humans and kind of stuck with an I eat you alive deck. Felt a little disappointed with the card pool. Very few of my strategies work well with this card pool. I would certainly be in for a challenge if this was my pool at a tourney

I am in love with this cardpool; so powerful, so many options!
I went with black/white with a splash for blue, for the off-color flashback on reap the seagraf and griptide. There are a lot of token generators and a lot of morbid effects going on.

It curves out pretty well, with 3 strong one mana spells,  6 two-mana spells, including the under-rated Skirsdag High Priest. On a deck like this that runs with 4 token generating spells he can start making demons in no time. there is also a human sub-theme going on. I could have gone with black-blue, it looks better in terms of sheer power, but i love playing controlling and synergistic decks like this one.

UB definitely seemed like the way to go. Slight Zombie sub-theme, with the captain, but that's mostly incidental.

I've never been one who liked playing more than 2 colors in this format of game, but I must admit that perhaps it may have been better with this set of cards to go 3 colors.  What do you think of this deck?

I don't think black is strong enough to play. It has a couple decent rares but all the other cards are just filler. ('cept the captain)
But Blue on the other hand has all the tools anyone would want. Mono blue is almost a possibility. Red seemed the best colour to splash because of the rare werewolf and the pyreheart.
Grow old or die trying.
Oh good, it got my deck size right this time.  I ended up U/B for the evasion and kill cards.  Yeah white has some nice aggro stuff, but only one kill card, I figure blue takes care of my offensive capability for the most part.  The captain's just in there to be a 2/2 deathtouch.  Nothing wrong with that.  Of course there's always the off- chance it could pump my highborn ghoul, my drake, or my wakedancer's zombie token.  I kept the curiosity because I expect it to be a workhorse with all my evasion creatures.  I originally had the nightbird's clutches in addition to the instigator gang, but decide I had enough evasion that I could cut it.

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

***************************************************************************************

MaRo: I redesigned him while the effect was on the stack.

I'm liking what I see and would likely, if doing this again go blue / black like many of you have.

For now however, I did go white / green as I have a thingy for Predator Ooze and was completly blinded by any other choice - you know - an itch that needed a skritch.

The "suggest lands" function still seems off. For my final decklist, even with 23 nonland cards, 1 nonbasic, and only 1 card over 5 mana, it still suggests 18 basic lands.

Maybe the suggest lands function needs a deck size function to go with it, so when you hit suggest lands, it asks, "How many cards will your deck contain?" If I input "40," and I have 23 nonland cards, then the tool should figure that I want 17 lands total, and apply its ratio accordingly.

As for the actual deck, UB is the way to go, but I spent a lot of time tinkering back and forth on three issues. First, do I want Ghoulcaller's Chant or a 17th land? The pool's not awesome, so playing 16 lands gives you more cards to bury the other guy with, and Chant helps that by rebuying an early zombie bear. On the other hand, the pool does have a lot of solid 4 drops, so I really want that 4th land. Also, since I only have 5 zombies, Chant probably won't generate card advantage.

Second, I'm torn between Skirsdag High Cultist and Wakedancer. They're both tricky to set up, but have good rewards if you can pull them off. I went with Wakedancer; it's more useful in isolation, and I'm not playing the token makers that would make the Cultist good.

Third, do I want the second Markov Patrician or the second Moon Heron? It kind of depends on #1; if I was only playing 16 lands, I'd probably play the second Patrician, but I opted for the Heron instead.
On the topic of Treasure Mage: Hello planeswalkers. Look at your hand, now back to me, now back to your hand, now back to me. Sadly, your hand doesn't have a big game-winning bomb in it, but if you searched through your library for an artifact with converted mana cost of 6 or greater, you could get one. Look down, now back up, shuffle your library. Where are you? You're in a Magic game, and you're losing. What's that in your hand? It's a Wurmcoil Engine. Look again, the Wurmcoil Engine is now a ticket to Nagoya. Anything is possible when you cast Treasure Mage. I'm on a dragon. This blue is just bonkers. Flyers and tempo and card manipulation galore. I do wish we had a Murder of Crows to round off the curve, though, but maybe I'm just being greedy. :P

Speaking of greedy, there's enough color fixing between Dawntreader Elk and Shimmering Grotto that we can splash black *and* red. I went green for the Tracker's Instincts as this is the kind of deck that really makes it shine - but if it didn't work out particularly well, I would happily switch into blue/black.

1 Reap the Seagraf
1 Tragic Slip

I feel like there was really only one way to go for the win with this pool, and that way is U/B.  There's not a lot of fixing here so it's difficult to splash anything, but I feel like with the amount of evasion we have splashing the 4-drop Instigator Gang is effort well-spent.

Not a lot of choices or decisions here, good cards abound and the curve and mana requirements just fill themselves in.

4 Island
4 Mountain
8 Swamp
1 Shimmering Grotto
1 Afflicted Deserter
1 Fiend of the Shadows
1 Instigator Gang
1 Invisible Stalker
2 Markov Patrician
1 Mindshrieker
1 Nearheath Stalker
1 Pyreheart Wolf
1 Skirsdag High Priest
1 Typhoid Rats
1 Wakedancer
1 Divination
1 Faithless Looting
1 Ghoulcaller's Chant
1 Griptide
1 Inquisitor's Flail
1 Maw of the Mire
1 Night Terrors
1 Nightbird's Clutches
1 Reap the Seagraf
1 Runechanter's Pike
1 Tragic Slip

There were not very good choices...though, there were some interesting cards. I especially like the idea of Runechanter's Pike, or Inquisiter's Flail attached to a Markov Partician.
