Top Fives!

Ok, so I was wondering what everyone thought of as the best of the best.  Species, feats, talents, force powers, starships, weapons.  Basically just pick as many of those topics as you want and make a list (in order) of your five favorites.  I know that a lot of things depend on the type of character you're running, but I want to know just your general favorites regardless of character type.  Keep in mind all the factors (like emplacement points and cost for starships, prerequisites for feats and talents, and weapon proficiencies and costs for weapons.)  I really want to hear what you guys pick, and the reason why would also be nice but isn't neccessary.  Thanks. SWSE Books:  SECR, SotG, FUCG, S&V, GaW/CWCG.  These are the books I want when its time to build adnventures for SAGA.  I'll admit it is a bit of toss-up between GaW (like the section on base building along with the alternate equipment method) and CWCG (Squads) but I'm pretty solid on my top four.

Talents:
Armor Mastery-Knight's Armor talent tree (LECG) - I'd prefer to say the more accessable Improved Armored Defense talent (Armor Specialist TT-SECR) which can still be top five but when you get IAD and its prereq all in one shot it's VERY hard to do better.  It may be the only talent I just remove from the game.

Evasion (SECR) - Highly conditional so it is hit or miss but if you face area attacks this talent is king.

Hunter's Mark, Debiliating Shot, Dastardly Strike - The big three that make the CT-Killer build so deadly.

Ataru - DEX (best overall ability in the game) to weapon damage.
I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of great talents in the other Sourcebooks but considering the list from the SECR finding good talents shouldn't be a problem.

Feats:  Force Sensitivity->train UtF->Force Training - Possibly the most taken feat in the game.  Also one of the feats that is most dependent on who takes it.  There are lots of other feats I like but none will come close to touching Force Training.

Species:  Human - Should be obvious that this is the most versatile species and can be used in almost any build.  It may not be the "best" species for any one category but it likely makes the top 10% for any character type.

Force Power:  Move Object - often an easy way to deal big damage to two targets and has other uses as well.

Very good choices.  Humans are always a good overall choice.  Really hard to go wrong with them.
Evasion is probably the most universally useful talent in the game.  Everybody benefits from it, at least a little bit.

I wouldn't go so far as saying Evasion is the most universally useful talent; this is simply because some DMs don't make much, or even any, use of area attacks and without area attacks Evasion is completely useless.  If I am looking for a universallyuseful talent I'd say that is Fool's Luck.  I may not say it is a top talent (although I do like it for some character builds) but everyone could use the extra +1 attack, +1 defense, or +5 circumstance bonus to all skills for the encounter's duration even if it costs a FP.  Now I favor long longer, multi-event, encounter durations and in those Fool's Luck is almost like having Skill Training in all your untrained skills and Skill Focus in all of your trained skills.
Very good point, I was not aware Fool's Luck was so good.  I foresee a scout/scoundrel build in the future.....

One thing to note, and StevenO inferred, is that per the errata Fool's Luck grants a +5 competence bonus to skills, thereby overlapping with any Skill Focus feats you might have. But yes if you have lots of Force Points and you like being a skill monkey character, picking up what is essentially training (the +5 bonus, not the actual benefits of being trained) or focus in any skill is very useful. Good suggestion.

StevenO also pointed out the Imperial Knight's Armor Mastery talent, and while it nice recognize 1) it's only for Imperial Knights and 2) Imperial Knights only get 5 talents total. So taking up 20% of the KILLER talents an Imperial Knight has access to with lower-level talent effects, even though it's a 2-for-1 deal, isn't always a smart deal.

To the expanding list I'll add the Damage Reduction 10 talent for Force users. I see it taken a lot and, any time I've seen it used, it's been to good effect. It's as useful for a squishy Force Wizard as it is for the lightsaber-wielding Tank.

Very good point, I was not aware Fool's Luck was so good.  I foresee a scout/scoundrel build in the future.....

Fool's Luck is definitely useful in a wide range of areas but it "good" is relative.  The +1 attack option would just be making up for the BAB lost to get it if you just dip into Scoundrel to get it; admittedly the Fortune talent tree is also available to a few PrC (notably Gunslinger) so you don't need to give up BAB for access to it.  The +1 Defense bonus is pretty universal but there are other ways to get a +1 bonus and a number of things that grant bigger bonuses in more specific, but often more used, areas.  I prefer the +5 compentence bonus to skills but that is because you should be able to use that more places but as I mentioned earlier if you have Skill Focus in your key skills it doesn't help at all.

Damage Reduction 10 did seem very good.

Top 5 Species! (This is entirely my opinion.  If your opinion is different than mine, get a life*)

#5: Rodian
Who doesn't love Rodians?!  If not for their very cherubic personalities, they are at least liked for their ability to get blasted in a bar (in about every game that I run, my heroes kill a Rodian in a bar).  Although they are not the best race stats-wise (they have a net Ability Modifier of -2), they are great filler characters, and also make great anti-heroes.

#4: Sullustan
If it wasn't for one of my party's characters, this species wouldn't even be on my radar.  However, Joradani, a Sullustan soldier, is one of the most kick a-$ characters ever made.

#3: Selkath
The ability to breathe underwater, the mastery of healing, high Charisma, and a major role in the Knights of the Old Republic video game put the Selkath on my list.

#2: Chiss
They're like humans, but smarter!

#1: Humans
What's more natural in a game than playing a member of your own species.  That, and humans get awesome bonuses that make us more versatile than any other species out there.

*JUST KIDDING!
Top 5 Starships! (Again, this is merely my less-than-humble opinion)

#5: Imperial Star Destroyer
It is almost every party's dream to one day commandere a Star Destroyer and rain hell on the rest of the galaxy.  That, and they look awesome.

#4: X-Wing
Simply because it is the most over-used starship in the game.

#3: Coralskipper
A living spaceship? Heck yes!

#2: Chiss Clawcraft
Let's face it, the Chiss are like Zynga, they take other people's crappy stuff and remake it a billion times better.

#1: Firespray-31 Patrol Craft
Boba Fett is my favorite character, so his ship takes the #1 spot.  My prejudice aside, it is still a pretty great ship, it can hold an entire party.
Top 5 EU Jedi! (This is based on my enjoyment of the characters, not their rpg stats)

#5:  Jacen Solo
I'm currently reading the Legacy of the Force series, and Jacen Solo is making my mind hurt!  He's so duty-bound, and he struggles with many of his decisions.  I feel sorry for him, even if he does almost ruin the galaxy.

#4: Mara Jade Skywalker
Mara Jade is pretty awesome.  Her training as a spy, combined with her strong Force connection, make her the ultimate force of stealth.

#3: Jaina Solo
She's the Sword of the Jedi!  She's a better pilot than her dad!  She kicks butt!

#2: Kyle Katarn
Kyle Katarn is the "Doom Guy" of Star Wars.  He doesn't need much personality, he's just that awesome.

#1: Revan
No one can forget their adventure as Revan.  The massive plot twist is permanently stuck in my mind, and it was one of my greatest moments in video games, ever.

But I would definitly put Stymie as my #1 talent.  It cost a frickin' Swift Action, for crying out loud!  I can't tell you how many times I've been all dressed up for my Swift Action, with nowhere to go.

Gungans certainly have a niche with +2 DEX on top a +2 species bonus to Reflex Defense but then you have their swimming and hold breath abilities to counter two negative stat modifiers.  The Nagai (LECG) are a species I often consider "too good" because they also get the +2 species bonus to Reflex Defense and the +2 to DEX but they also get another stat increase and only have one penalized stat; I also thing the Nagai's other abilities are generally more useful than those a gungan gets.

Now the species I consider to be comprable to humans in an array of roles:
Arkanian Offshoot (KotOR) - except CON based things
Chiss (LotF) - Super INT human
Duros - except CON based
Given (GoI)
Ishi Tib (UR) - beak instead of feat
Near Human (UR)
Hm... I will check out all of these species.  This is turning into a great thread!

Top 5 Planet Settings!

#5: Tatooine
This rugged, desert planet serves as an excellent location for any type of adventure, from your typical hero's quest to your typical "scum and villainy" adventure.

#4: Coruscant
On this gigantic planet, literally anything could happen.  The Old Republic, the Empire, the New Republic, the Galactic Alliance, and many other governments all ruled from this planet, and it remains largely unchanged throughout the eras, except for during the Yuuzhan Vong occupation.

#3: Rodia
An entire planet populated by my favorite scumbags!  Rodia provides a great setting for me to break out my Rodian accent and make up weird phrases that sound like something Greedo would say.  Also, it's jungles provide a nice setting for a hunting/hunted adventure.

#2: Corellia
The rugged individualism of Corellia sets it apart from most of the other planets in the galaxy.  It is the homeworld of Han Solo, Wedge Antilles, and Admiral Pellaeon.  It is an especially interesting setting if used during the Legacy of the Force time period.

#1: Nar Shaddaa
Although technically not a planet, Nar Shaddaa has enough character for 50 planets.  My first experience with Nar Shaddaa was Knights of the Old Republic II, and it was my favorite location of the game.  It's crime-ridden, Hutt controlled streets make it the perfect setting for my many cime-based campaigns.

Best of the Best

[sblock=Species] 5 Bith. I have always loved these guys, probably because I have never been awakened in the middle of the night with stories of owls or posterior detriment, I hope nobody reading this has. They have an iconic look and their FP bonus with knowledge skills makes them all kinds of useful.
Preferred Combo= Noble Talent, Know your Enemy (FUCG) with a Force using build to glean opposition statistics as a swift action. [sblock= 4]

4 Clawdite. Shape shifting holds it own allure, but these critters (with the species feats from scum and villainy) can pull off some truly fancy tricks. The next time I get to play, I really want to play one of these. [sblock=3]

3 Human
. Diverse and able, these creatures are adaptable…[sblock=2]

2 Ithorian. I would hate to see one in a swimsuit magazine, sure; but my interest in them is mostly mechanical. I do admit having loved the voiceovers with these guys in the KOTOR games, they sounded awesome and their peaceful nature still appeals to me. Ithorians have +2 Cha and +2 wis with a built in weapon (the Bellow) which makes for a truly amazing character, especially at lower levels.
Preferred Combo= Mercenary’s Grit (TotG), Equilibrium (core), Channel Vitality (JATM), “Shake it Off’ at lower levels.

1

1 Sorcerer of Rhand. Because these creatures are pure dark, they won’t get much play at a gaming table in a galaxy far,far away; but rest assured that these dark spawns are matched by none. They start with force sensitivity and Force trainings which by itself earns these weirdos a number one slot. Add to that insta-mage a few beast qualities and you have an entity that can be truly haunting.
Penalties like -2 str, -2 Dex, and -2 Cha are only obstacles at lower levels. If such a monstrosity makes it into the Force Adept Prestige Class… you have something dangerous and memorable on your hands.

The Sorcerers seem very, very powerful.  What book are they in again?

Distress to Discord (LECG 27)
...do you have Sneak Attackers in your party? Then get it.
Man Down (S&V 18)
...for the combat medic. It's nice to be able to just run up to someone as soon as they go down and have a whole turn to do something about it, considering the action cost of things like First Aid and Revivify.
Battlefield Remedy (GaW 21)
...and then when you do apply First Aid to an unconsious ally, it's nice to have that ally at -3 steps on the track rather than -4.
Reverse Strength (GoI 23)
...it's for a specific CT-killer build, but combined with the Bone Crusher feat I LOVE it. Love it love it love it.
