Dark Ascension Discussion

We've gotten our first bit of information today, so I figured it would be time for a thread like this.

Things have certainly taken a turn for the worst. More so than I was expecting. The monsters of Innistrad are becoming more and more immune to classical weaknesses. Their numbers are on the rise, and the humans are becoming more evil themselves, appeasing or even joining the monsters.

The art in the article has a strong emphasis on violence.

I love how they say they'll keep the identity of the last planeswalker a secret, and then at the end of the article there's an image of Sorin Markov, advertising the pre-release..

After the official forums lost most of their functionality, a once vibrant community of Vorthos was wiped out.The survivors founded a new place to discuss all things concerning with the art, flavor and storylines of Magic: The Gathering. Come join us.

The way it reads makes me wonder if this was all just a ploy by Avacyn to specifically bait out the hidden evils, and they're about to fall into her trap.

It also makes me very curious about what exactly Sorin's secret connection is (assuming they are actually talking about Sorin).  Maybe Avacyn left because she was looking for him?

THe only tidbit that interests me are the werewolf comming back to life (and the other powers the monsters gain). It seems something is tipping the scales way in the monster's favor.

The way it reads makes me wonder if this was all just a ploy by Avacyn to specifically bait out the hidden evils, and they're about to fall into her trap.

You think she intentionally let thousands of people die?

Angels are terrifying creatures. Who knows what's going on here.

It's cool to get confirmation that Griselbrand is, in fact, one of Liliana's Four, and I love the setup that Garruck has here where he's really not involved in the plot except by dumb chance. They're setting up these pieces really quite stunningly. It would be a shame if we didn't actually get a novel out of it, since I'm super excited to see things fall into place. Of course, I was excited for Quest for Karn, too...

Also, remember my article on modes of shortened, audience-generated narratives? The one that wasn't about porn? It looks like Moment of Heroism just got transformed from an implied narrative piece into an implied history piece. Cool.

I'm really excited about this set.

Well, I don't necessarily think it, but I do wonder it.  Thousands of people always die over time.  She certainly could have become frustrated with some inability to defeat certain demons that kept themselves too far locked away.  She may have decided a decade or so worth of deaths in a year was a price that needed to be paid.  She may hate herself for the decision, but could very well have gathered the conviction to set up such a trap.

I suppose what I'm pointing out is that she may have had the mindset that she's the one "intentionally" responsible for someone/something else's vile, evil deeds if she has the power to prevent it yet doesn't.  But she may have wised up to that moral fallacy, especially if she realized that there was a way to put an end to future suffering if she stepped aside for a moment.

Heck, the whole thing could double as a test to see who remains loyal/faithful that she's doing the right thing and burn *all* the impure when she gets back.

Sorin's on all the promotional material for Dark Ascension. Various members of WotC have already casually revealed that he's from Innistrad AND that he'll be playing a role in the story. Maro heavily implied he'd get a new card in the upcoming set.

But the third planeswalker to be involved in the story is... a secret?

There's no way they're going to do something as dumb as it looks like they're trying to do. It's beyond even WotC at its worst. There must be a fourth 'walker involved. There has to be. I don't know how I'd react to the alternative.

Incidentally, Innistrad art continues to be beautiful. Volkan Baga's zombie is especially good. I know its gripping the angel's neck for support was anything but subtle, but I still got just a little chill.

It seems probable that the article was written before Brading decided to make Sorin the posterboy of the set.

We know he's in there since his artwork is the correct aspect ratio for a planeswalker card (and the wrong one for a normal card), and the hints for the "third" planeswalker match what we know about Sorin.

* And honestly, i can see the senerio. Creative decides to conceal Sorin in the set, like they did with Bolas). Then Branding starts working on the set and decide that Sorin would be the best choice. Marketing wins.

… and then, the squirrels came.
Why would the article have been written before the other promotional materials? That doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Also, yeah, that zombie definitely gave me chills as well. Yeesh.

It would make sense if the article was written for the Dark ascention style guide, or as an internal memo for other departments.

I'd imagine that Creative has to sell the set to people within the company before they can go forward. This article could have been given to a vice president, or presented to R&D to get approval to move forward.

Just look at the facts, the article is refering to Sorin... Sorin is used in promotional matierals. Either there is a break down in communication, Doug has never seen any of the marketing for the set, or (more likely) the article was written before a change in the marketing.

* It's also possible that this article was meant to be released before Dark Ascention (And the picture of Sorin) but for some reason was delayed until now.

… and then, the squirrels came.
I think my hangup here is believing that it's more likely that this was written before anyone decided anything about promotional materials than Doug just didn't get some memo. >_>

Either way works, the point is that Sorin is the mystery planeswalker. Not an additonal planeswalker.

Oh, sure. Almost certainly.

Now how much do you want to bet that Barinellos is going to be spending the next month having to scream that at people on the speculation board? :P

In fact, we can probably put down good money on which of the following 'walkers will be most suggested:

  • Nicol Bolas

  • Urza

  • Karn

  • Ugin

  • Yawgmoth

  • Marit Lage

  • Serra

The frontrunner is probably Bolas, but I'm always amazed at the proficiency with which people shoehorn undead!Urza into things.

BURSTING WITH VIGOR!
Trolljuju wiped the sweat from his brow as he continued his slow trudge up the snowy mountain. The wind was strong and fiercely cold, but he pressed against it. Juju knew Beast Engine was somewhere at the peak, waiting for him. But this was not a matter of confronting the forces of nature themselves; that had been accomplished long before, and was now too easy to maintain the manly man's interest. Today, Beast Engine was here waiting for a friend. Trolljuju's mind drifted from his appointment to thoughts of Beast Engine's manliness. The only man in history to punch the fossilized remains of a dinosaur back to life just to punch it to death again. The man who deflected bullets with his pectoral muscles during his daily assassination attempts. The man who cured cancer with a serum made from pure crystalized virility. The man who burst with vigor. Not just a man but a Man- the manliest of all men. A god of masculinity in physical form. Trolljuju's heart fluttered at the memory of him and lightened his steps as he pressed on. Suddenly, he was shaken from his reverie by a deep, powerful rumble in the mountain that shook him to his core. Instinctively, he threw himself to the ground just before the slope ahead of him exploded in a fiery wall of light and heat. So great was the force that the entire upper section of the mountain was vaproized. It scorched Juju's coat, then rose on the air to drift far away, a plume of white-hot ash. When Trolljuju lifted his head to see what was left behind, he beheld a wide, perfectly flat stone plateau, and in the distance he could see a muscular figure, his foot still held up from the kick. There was no doubt it was Beast Engine. As soon as the ground beneath him cooled, Juju cast his heavy pack aside and ran. As the figure grew with closeness, he could see Beast Engine was nude, as was expected. The snow that fell near him turned to a thin wall of steam, looking to Trolljuju's eyes like a barrier. Engine was too strong, too manly to occupy the same space as the ordinary universe. He lived in a world all his own. But fortunately for Juju, it was only an illusion. He ran at full speed into Engine, who caught him with both arms and effortlessly twirled with him, resting with Juju dipped low to the ground in Engine's arms. "Beast Engine, my love," Trolljuju breathed, sturck with awe at Engine's masculine beauty despite the familiarity of his face. Engine just smiled, radiating from every inch of him with incredible strength, yet gentle warmth. "It's been so long, Juju. I've missed you." "Forgive me. I lost contact with you while you were boxing with Death to win back and consume the soul of Theodore Roosevelt. But now I'm here..." Juju lifted one tentative hand to Engine's face, but he pulled away. "You know I cannot give you what you seek. Were we to make love, your body would be destroyed by the force." "I know, of course I would," Juju responded, tears in his eyes. "May I have, at least, one kiss?" "Very well. For you, my friend." Slowly, gingerly, they came closer. But the moment their lips met, a flood of unbridled manliness rushed into Trolljuju, body and soul, and every cell in his body exploded. Beast Engine fell to his knees, and in his grief, he wept. The tears that fell from his face burned deep into the rock beneath him. But slowly, his sorrow turned to conviction. He beat the crap out of Death once. He could do it again.
Wow. Glad I didn't put any actual money down on that one.

You know, I thought of Szat and Leshrac, too, and was like "Pfft, nah, that's way too crazy and obscure." Oh me of little faith...

@Barinellos: Futurama FTW.

And I'm saying Sorin. No way they'd promote the set with him and then throw another walker in.

The "secret" planeswalker has to be Sorin. If it isn't it's a Sorin expy, and that's just a stupid thing to do.

But Skibo touched on something interesting. The monsters are getting stronger. A lot stronger. During Innistrad it was just humans getting weaker because their wards were failing, but in Dark Ascension it seems like the monsters are getting stronger on their own. More than you'd expect. As if something is making them stronger.

Maybe Liliana has sometime to do with that?

Didn't the article say something about the dead were-wolfs not staying dead? The exact kind of thing she deals in? *shrug* Who knows.

I can't see it.
From what I've seen of her character, she's largely disinterested in planar politics and is jut trying to track down Griselbrand.
It seems like she's also only involved in the plane in a truly random way, though. I doubt she's actively making the dark denizens of the whole plane stronger, since she seems largely engaged in storming the church of Avecyn and finding out what's in that damn Helvault.

...

It's obvious to everyone that this is what's going to happen, right?

Of course, we still don't know who that raven dude is, or whether this is, in fact, her home plane. Unlikely that either will be important, but it's still info that we don't have.

I wonder how many people will declare the fourth planeswalker to be that raven guy...

While I tend to agree, I can't just dismiss this out-of-hand.  Remember, at this point, we have very little knowledge on what tCV actually does.  Its possible that its very presence on this plane could be strengthening the Dark creatures.  considering what the CotCV did, it seems in-line with its power set.

@Planeswalker gaffe: I can only blame Doug so much for this.  He's probably been spending more time looking on future sets than the current one, and has probably only seen the advertising one or twice.  I place the fault mostly on the website and its editors.  Someone needed to read the article, walk over to Dougs office and just say 'Dude, seriously?'  I have regularly been disappointed by the lack of content editing on the site and this just seems the latest example there.

I don't see Liliana actively influencing the monsters of Innistrad. She just doesn't care. She's here for one thang, and one thang only. Killing demons.

Having the veil influencing things would be a cop-out really. Innistrad is a planar-focused block. It isn't about interplanar things. The problems and solutions should come from inside the plane itself, in my opinion.

Nice.

@isaic:

That's true. It's the editing that's really consistently disasterous, both on the site and in the novels. I'm honestly a bit baffled as to why that's the case, especially when there've been whole ranges of errors from the simply sloppy--like the incorrect set symbol used in the Fifth Dawn book--to the eggregious--TBTSNBN and TSTTBTSNBN seeing print at all, for example--for over a decade now. Editing issues are almost a tradition now.

No, it's highly possible for Avacyn Restored. It's moronic fallacy for Dark Ascension.
We know a few things about Dack already, and none of it matches that blurb.
If i had to take a guess. I'd say the Veil is what's ressurecting werewolves, empowering vampires, ect.

But that's pure speculation. But something new has to be messing with the monsters.
… and then, the squirrels came.
I think that maybe Dack speculation might be something to not be to harsh on that's all.
Zombie wolves are pretty interesting to hear about.

Ressurecting werewolves. I just hope its nothing like bloodghast, cuz that wouldd be way to strong.
Why does this new twist have to be caused by something else new? What if the vampires, zombies, geists, and werewolves are all just naturally this tough? Is it possible that Avacyn's presence was empowering humans AND weakening monsters? And the latter effect just took a bit longer to start wearing off?

Random speculation time!

Avacyn has left the plane because she was looking for Sorin, whom she knows has a heroic streak. Unbeknown to her, however, Sorin returned to his home plane of Innistrad before she returnswhen she realizes she has left humanity there defenseless.

Then Dack followed Avacyn to Innistrad because somebody has to play that Benny Hills song as Avacyn chases Sorin around...
Why does this new twist have to be caused by something else new? What if the vampires, zombies, geists, and werewolves are all just naturally this tough? Is it possible that Avacyn's presence was empowering humans AND weakening monsters? And the latter effect just took a bit longer to start wearing off?

I don't think so. Self-ressurecting werewolves, Vampires immune to everything, and all that seem like an unnatural improvment.
… and then, the squirrels came.
Could Grisielbands powers be similar to Lili's? She did have the power of reanimation before she got the viel, and i think her powers were given to her by the demons. So then it would be plausible that grizzles has that power.

I could be wrong on this. I haven't read the books at all, this is just me using stuff i picked up here.
@ Skibo: Well, it will be a very fresh take on things if vampires are meant to be immune to everything and werewolves are undying since so far they are just just merely generic, stereotypical vampires and werwolves (well, vampires has been done to death so that isn't Wizard's fault, but wild, crazy, savage werewolves who has no control over themselves have been done to the death in almost everywhere in pop culture. Heroic werewolves are almost non-existent in pop culture).
Yeah, technically the undying werewolves are just a return to form, so to speak...

Consider: Evidence A.

And let's not forget that in some cultures vampires and werewolves are the one and the same. The word 'vrykolakas' mean vampire in Greece, and originally mean 'werewolf' in the Balkans, where most of the modern vampire myth comes from.
