The Revised Cavalier (aka Cavalier with Stances)

When I first took at a cavalier in Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms, I remember thinking it a bit odd that it utilised "old style" attack powers; I was expecting it to use stances akin to the knight and slayer in Heroes of the Fallen Lands.

I've spent a bit of time converting various paladin powers into stances (not that difficult really), as well as creating a couple of new ones. Of course, this necessates other changes, since the cavalier has daily attack powers from level 5 and onwards (at-will stances + daily power being a touch too powerful), so I've replaced the daily powers with a handful of extra class features.

A few notes:

- All of the stances can be used with *any* basic attack made with a weapon, not just melee basic attacks - archer paladins rejoice! .
- Most of the stances are conversions of existing paladin at-will attacks.
- Str/Wis cavaliers are now viable.
- Righteous shield is now a level 2 utility power, and improved righteous shield is a level 6 utility power.

Level 1: Righteous Radiance
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature, except you can use either your Wisdom modifier or your Charisma modifier to determine damage.

At 5th level, you also gain a +1 bonus to the damage rolls of weapon attacks. This bonus increases to +2 at 15th level and +3 at 25th level.

Level 1: Spirit of Virtue
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature.

Level 1: Paladin Stances
Benefit: You gain two of the following powers of your choice.

Ardent Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the ardent assault stance. Until the stance ends, whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, that enemy is subject to the effects of your defender aura until the end of your next turn. Any enemy you hit while this stance is active can trigger your righteous radiance, as long as that enemy is within 10 squares of you.

Blazing Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Fire, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the blazing assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks deal fire damage, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, your allies gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls against that enemy until the start of your next turn.

Bolstering Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the bolstering assault stance. Until the stance ends, whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, you gain temporary hit points equal to your Wisdom modifier.

Ethereal Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Charm, Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the ethereal assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks are made against the target's Will instead of its AC, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, you can shift 1 square and pull the target 1 square to a square adjacent to you.

Enfeebling Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the enfeebling assault stance. Until the stance ends, whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, that enemy takes a penalty to damage rolls until the end of your next turn. The penalty is equal to your Wisdom modifier.

Heedless Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the heedless assault stance. Until the stance ends, you take a -2 penalty to all defenses, and gain a +4 power bonus to the damage rolls of basic attacks using a weapon.
  Level 11: +6 power bonus
  Level 21: +8 power bonus

Inspiring Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the inspiring assault stance. Until the stance ends, whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, one ally within 5 squares of you gains temporary hit points equal to your Charisma modifier. If the ally is bloodied, the number of temporary hit points increases by 5.

Piercing Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Radiant, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the piercing assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks are made against the target's Reflex instead of its AC, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, that enemy takes ongoing 3 radiant damage (save ends).

Rebuking Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the rebuking assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks are made against the target's Fortitude instead of its AC, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, you push that enemy 1 square.

Righteous Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Radiant, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the righteous assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks deal radiant damage, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, you gain a +2 bonus to saving throws until the start of your next turn.

Thundering Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance, Thunder
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the thundering assault stance. Until the stance ends, your basic attacks deal thunder damage, and whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon, you gain a +2 bonus to the attack roll of the next basic attack you make with a weapon before the end of your next turn.

Valiant Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the valiant assault stance. Until the stance ends, you gain a power bonus to the attack rolls of basic attacks using a weapon. This bonus is equal to the number of enemies adjacent to you.

Vengeful Assault | Paladin Utility
At-Will * Divine, Radiant, Stance
Minor Action | Personal
Effect: You assume the vengeful assault stance. Until the stance ends, whenever you hit an enemy with a basic attack using a weapon while at least one bloodied ally is within 5 squares of you, that enemy takes extra radiant damage equal to your Charisma modifier.

Level 1: Holy Smite
Benefit: You gain the holy smite power. This functions as per the normal cavalier power, except you can use either your Wisdom modifier or your Charisma modifier to determine damage. At 3rd level, you can use holy smite twice per encounter, and at 13th level you can use it three times per encounter.

Level 2: Utility Power
Benefit: You gain a 2nd level paladin utility power of your choice. You gain an additional paladin utility power (which must be of your level or lower) at 6th, 10th, 16th, and 22nd levels.

Level 4: Pace of the Virtuous Charger
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature. Alternatively you can choose Summoned Steed (Dragon #393).

Level 7: Divine Burden
Benefit: When you use holy smite and the triggering attack hits, the target is slowed until the end of your next turn.

Level 7: Extra Paladin Stance
Benefit: You gain one additional paladin stance of your choice.

Level 9: Protector's Commitment
Benefit: While you or an enemy subject to your defender aura are adjacent to a bloodied ally, you gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls.

Level 17: Encouraging Presence
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature.

Level 19: Righteous Force
Benefit: Whenever an enemy takes damage from your righteous radiance, you can slide that enemy 1 square as a free action.

Level 23: Righteous Rescue
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature.

Level 27: Divine Grace
Benefit: As the normal cavalier class feature.

Level 29: Cavalier's Truth
Benefit: Whenever you attack a creature subject to your defender aura, you ignore that creature's resistance and immunities.

Here's a quick bonus for players who want to play a striker cavalier:

Alternative Class Feature

Show
Level 1: Divine Wrath
You can select this option instead of your defender's aura and righteous radiance powers.
Benefit: You gain a bonus to the damage rolls of weapon attacks. The bonus equals the higher of your Charisma and Wisdom modifiers.

Level 19: Resurgent Attack
If you choose Divine Wrath at level 1, you don't gain Righteous Force. Instead, you gain the following benefit.
Benefit: In addition, at 19th level, whenever you spend a healing surge, you gain a +2 power bonus to the next attack roll you make before the end of your next turn.
