May I suggest that as part of this project you make changes to the shade race so that it isn't irredeemably horrible?
I think the real problem is the lack of racial traits. When compared to the eladrin, for example, this seems pretty obvious:

Eladrin Education / Practiced Sneak (weaker for the shade, since eladrin can choose any skill, while shades can only choose Stealth)
Eladrin Weapon Proficiency / nothing
Eladrin Will / nothing
Fey Origin / Shadow Origin
Trance / nothing
Fey Step / One with Shadow
Eladrin Racial Utility Powers / Master of Shadows

Here are a a few ideas for additional shade racial traits. The first is obviously based on Eladrin Will, while the other two are inspired by the 3.5E shade. If a DM isn't happy to allow these as racial traits, they can easily be taken as feats instead.

Umbral Infusion: You gain a +1 racial bonus to your Fortitude defense.
In addition, you gain a +5 racial bonus to saving throws against illusion effects.

Veiled Haste: Whenever you begin your turn in a square of dim light or darkness, your speed increases by 2 until the end of your turn.

Twilight Healing: While you are in a square of dim light or darkness, whenever you spend a healing surge you regain a number of additional hit points equal to your Charisma modifier.
Now rewrite the shade with all of this installed so we can easily copy it to a doc and save it under our "Improved Races" folder xD

You did well :D

I've updated the first post with a number of additional feats (the total is now 34!), and also provided a link for a compiled .doc file containing all the feats plus the additional racial traits proposed above.
You, good sir, are a genius.

I've just checked out the new Book of Vile Darkness feats on the Compendium, and Disciple of Darkness is an excellent fit both thematically and mechanically with the feats and additional racial traits above .
I decided to have a go at reworking the shade race so that it resembles the shade template in Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting. Since the template can only be applied to characters of 11th level or higher, naturally not every feature could become a racial trait; some are now feats instead. I've also added a bunch of new feats available to anyone with the Born of Shadow feat.

Shade
Show
Ability Scores: +2 Charisma; +2 Dexterity or +2 Intelligence
Vision: Darkvision

Fragile Mortality: You have one fewer healing surge than normal.

Mortal Heritage: Select a living humanoid race other than shade. You use that race's average height, average weight, size, speed, languages, and skill bonuses. You are also considered a member of that race for the purpose of meeting prerequisites.

Practiced Sneak: You have training in Stealth.

Reborn into Shadow: You are considered to have the Born of Shadow feat for the purpose of meeting prerequisites. You also gain two feats of your choice from the Shadowborn category.

Shadow Origin: The Shadowfell has left its mark on you, so you are considered a shadow creature for the purpose of effects that relate to creature origin.

Umbral Infusion: You gain a +1 racial bonus to saving throws and to your Fortitude defense.

Shade Step: You have the shadow stride power.

Shadow Stride | Shade Racial Utility
The planar energy of the Shadowfell twirls around you and lets you slip away from danger.

Shade Utility Power

Show
Since shadow stride makes shadow jump somewhat redundant, here's a replacement that's effectively a team version of one with shadows, with an added zone of dim light and the ability to be sustained.

Deepening Shadows | Shade Utility 16
You summon a burst of shadows that swirls around you, allowing you and your allies to more easily hide from sight.
At-Will * Conjuration, Shadow, Zone
Standard Action | Close burst 2
Effect: The burst creates a zone of dim light centered on you that lasts until the end of your next turn. While within the zone, you and each ally can make Stealth checks to become hidden when you have any cover or concealment, and can use cover from your allies to become hidden or remain hidden.
Sustain Minor: The effects persist.
me gusta.
Too bad I never seem to be able to successfully play a shady character
I always end up as a "happy warlock", a paladin, bard or something like that xD
