Orc Sorcerer build (I need your insight!)

Greetings,

Our group have decided to try something new. We are creating an Orc/Half-Orc party.

Since I've never played a Sorcerer (nor wizard) character type, I took the class to try. BUT...

I am fairly bad at character creation. I thought it would be a good idea to come here to see if there would be peoples with great idea.

So:

I am an ORC (ideally) or an Half-ORC.
I am a spellcaster (sorcerer type but not wizard type).
I wish something RP, not something necesserely optimized (but both would be nice!)

I have read a bit here and there, look the internet and came up with some interesting things, but that doesn't mean it should be that (I don't know everything that could be cool!).

I look at the Blood Magus PrC, Fiend-Blooded PrC and Dread Necromancer Class. The concept seemed interesting.

But whatever I have said:

For an orc, I'd make sure he can go into melee when necessary. The simplest way to do this is battle sorcerer (Unearthed Arcana). Take the arcane strike feat (Complete Warrior) and chose some self-buffs as spells known so you can use your casting to improve your melee.

Do you have to be orc/half-orc, or is something "orc-like" suitable?  If it's the latter, Races of Destiny has a race called the Sharakim, which is human, but orc-like in appearance.  Decidedly UNorc-like in demeanor, though, which opens up some RP possibilities.  For example, they tend to be fastidiously clean.  Imagine how that would go over with a bunch of "savages"...  The biggest problem with them (and with orcs & half-orcs) is that they don't do well as sorcerors due to a Cha penalty.  Sharakim do get an Int bonus and favored class of wizard, though...
Next, for "sorceror-type spellcaster", what exactly do you mean?  If you're "just" looking for a spontaneous arcane caster, a Sharakim would make a better duskblade (PHB2) or maybe even warmage (CArc), though the Cha penalty will still hurt you there.  Another possibilty, though, might be for you to play a psion or ardent (depending on race).  They still have a sorceror-type feel, but psions (Expanded Psionics Handbook) are Int-based, so (at least with Sharakim) you get a bonus.  Ardents (Complete Psionics) are Wis-based, so you won't have a penalty with sharakim or half-orcs (don't remember stats for orcs).
As far as optimization, it's going to be hard to optimize an orc as ANY sort of caster, and difficult for a half-orc in anything other than a Wis-based casting class, which usually means divine, not arcane (though as mentioned above, an ardent is Wis-based, as are psychic warriors).

Well, the sharakim are orc-like in appearance, they just aren't actually orcs (they're considered human).  They get an Int bonus, instead of penalty, so they would be an excellent choice for warmage (Cha-based casting, but an Int bonus to damage), duskblade (Int-based spontaneous melee caster), or psion (psionics are always spontaneous).  Any other orc race, you're not doing too well if you don't use Wisdom.

Draco, if he says he needs to be an orc, then he can't be a sharakim.

Orcs get -2 to all three mental ability scores, so any spellcaster class will automatically be gimped with them unless you pick a class with 1) a large number of base spell slots (or power points), 2) a list primarily based around no-save effects, and 3) preferrably a lower maximum spell level.

Given how orcs get +4 Strength, with those parameters, I would suggest duskblade or ardent.

DUSKBLADES are Intelligence-based, but do not rely on any other mental ability scores anywhere, and they have a LOT of base spell slots. They get a lot of damage spells, but many of them are touch-range, and touch spells generally lack a saving throw (so you don't need a high Intelligence for DC). They get abilities that allows them to boost their spells if they're used in melee - which the +4 Strength promotes. They even only go up to 6th level spells, so 16 Intelligence is probably more than enough, and that's reachable even in an orc.

ARDENTS are Wisdom-based, and also generally only rely on Wisdom. They get the same number of power points as a psion, but have a slightly higher HD and heavy armor, which helps if you want that Strength score to be put to use. What's interesting is that they get to build their own power list. Pick the Conflict mantle as a primary mantle and you're more or less golden - it has most of the good buff effects on it, and those don't rely on save DCs. Your other primary mantle could be Physical Power, Freedom, Fate, or really anything else. If you take Ardent all the way to 10, you can also qualify for the ZOMG Dominant Ideal ability, which basically makes even blasting (through Energy or Force) a viable approach, if you pick enough metapsionics.

Both of these can fight quite well in the frontlines, using your +4 Strength to great advantage, while minimizing the drawbacks and providing you spontaneous spellcasting. They can switch between distance spells if need be, or change it up and buff yourself into a melee god. Both should work quite well in those roles, although I'd think Duskblade would be easier to start as a newer player.

Everyone in your party should have sundark goggles (Races of the Dragon). They negate light sensitivity and only cost 10 gp. Also, a band of orcs in sunglasses is a fun mental image.


If you can use it, the magic-blooded template (Dragon 306 – 64) gives +2 cha and -2 wis for +0 LA.


If you're resigned to not using save-based effects anyway, favored soul could work (perhaps of Kord). You just need to keep your wisdom high enough to be able to cast your spells. You can completely ditch charisma if you don't learn any spells with a save.

Other way around, sadly.  Favored Souls are Charisma-based for spells/day, and Wis-based for saves.

Lots of good advices at this point. I verified with my GM and the expanded Psi HB is not to the menu. I've read the DuskBlade and it seems promosing though the BG doesn't seems to fit the Orc (or maybe it's just me).

This is good advices! Btw, I can sound newbie to D&D, but it's been a long time since I've played, but I always sticked to regular class and now I have a GM that told us to improvise!

Lots of good advices at this point. I verified with my GM and the expanded Psi HB is not to the menu. I've read the DuskBlade and it seems promosing though the BG doesn't seems to fit the Orc (or maybe it's just me).

Class descriptions are, for the most part, just fluff.  The duskblade is an armored spellcaster who likes to get up close & personal with his spells and multiple attacks.  How is that NOT orc-like?  If you go that route, there are worse PrCs than the Abjuratn Champion (Complete Mage).  Since you're getting a penalty on all three mental scores, you're going to want something that only relies on one.  Since you can't use psionics, the duskblade or battle sorceror (Maat_Mons already mentioned it in post #2) are going to be your best bet.  Especially since you aren't likely to want to multi-class.

Right! I was actually reading more carefully the Duskblade and you truly are right. Although, what do you think of doing a few level in DB then going for the PrC Fiend-Blooded?

I don't know the Fiend Blooded (where is it?) But I can say Duskblade 20 works just fine. You won't need to prestige unless you really want to. See the guide for more.

Right! I was actually reading more carefully the Duskblade and you truly are right. Although, what do you think of doing a few level in DB then going for the PrC Fiend-Blooded?

Assuming you mean the Fiend-Blooded prestige class from Heroes of Horror, you could also consider the Tainted Scholar (from the same book); if you're going to have penalties to all your mental stats, it's worth considering a class that renders them largely irrelevant by instead basing your casting on your corruption and depravity scores.  If your DM allows it, that is.

Zauber's Mutable Rod: This rod has a number of useful functions that make it easier to live in the wilderness. It is made of polished wood, with five studlike buttons on one end. Each button produces a different effect when pressed. Unless otherwise noted, the rod’s functions have no limit on the number of times they can be employed. When button 1 is pressed, one end of the rod produces a small flame, equivalent to a candle. When button 2 is pressed, the rod unfolds into a two-person tent, complete with bedrolls and warm blankets. When button 3 is pressed, the rod becomes a one-handed hammer, suitable for pounding pitons into a wall. When button 4 is pressed, the rod becomes a sturdy iron spade. When button 5 is pressed, the rod becomes a wooden bucket able to hold 2 gallons of liquid. Once per day, it can be commanded to fill with fresh water. If the rod is seriously damaged or broken in any of its alternate forms (button 2, 3, 4, or 5), it reverts to its basic rod form and cannot be activated for 24 hours. At a cost of -3 Constitution, unless you're a dragonwrought kobold. With a d4 HD, that's not something you can give up easily.

They need one level of Half-Orc Paragon to do that first, and only the last two levels of Human Paragon advance spellcasting. So you're giving up two caster levels, on top of the delayed spell access sorcerers normally get, in exchange for +2 Charisma, which is not as extreme as you might think, especially given the workarounds I listed above.

Plus, we've established he's a full-blooded orc, not a half-orc. 

3. Use the warlock


While a decent idea in general - warlocks do not actually have a "casting stat" in that you can build them with essentially no Charisma, simply by avoiding invocations with saves -  the request was specifically for a spontaneous spellcaster, of which the warlock is not.

In general, though, this is not a good choice: The warlock is not a substitute for a full caster, he's an arcane-flavored archer with some battlefield control options and debuffs. And even then, he hits his peak at level 5; after that, monsters and other PCs scale faster than he does.
