2011 Cards!
Turnout a bit low, but we can work on that next year.  Many people that wanted to participate lost track of time.  Anyways, here are the submissions for this year, labeled by submitter.  I added some of my own cards to every submission to sweeten the deal.  You can click on the images in the sblock to go to a bigger version.

Hey all!

This is a little tradition that Gavin Verhey started over at MTGSalvation.  I thought that I'd (shamelessly) steal it and put it to use over here in our little forums community (and perhaps keep it alive, Gavin may stop due to his recent internship with WotC R&D).

So, what am I talking about, you may ask?

The holiday card exchange is pretty simple.  Everyone send in cards to me (as the organizer), usually altered in some way, I mix up the packages I get, and send them out to the contributors.  Sort of like a double secret santa.

Now, you don't have to be any kind of awesome artist to alter your submissions (I know I'm not).  Generally, personal things like in-jokes or obvious references to your forums personality make for the most memorable cards.  Stolen from Gavin's last thread, here are some tips for your submissions:

  • Try and modify cool cards. They don't necessarily have to be rares, but it's great when somebody can play the cards they receive in a deck and then tell the story of how they received them!

  • You may submit as few or as many cards as you would like.  Your submission will be treated as a single entity and be gifted to a single individual, so everything included will be kept together as a "set".

  • Stumped for cards to alter? Try sending cards related to your name, avatar, or signature! That way there's a connection between the Wizards Community Forums and the cards you're altering.

  • What you receive is random and a gift from someone else to you. Regardless of how you feel about the quality of cards you received, please be grateful. After all, it's a gift!

  • Part of the fun is ripping open the package when it finally arrives to see what you received. Try not to post the alters you did ahead of time - though vague hints can sometimes be fun.

  • Sending items such as letters, notes, or pictures along with your cards to the other person is not only allowed, but encouraged!

  • You might want to take a picture of your cards before you send them so that you can still show them off if the recipient has no way to upload an image.  I will try to document many of the submissions, but I may be overwhelmed.

  • Take your time and make some great alters!

Like I sad, pretty simple.

How do I participate?

I'm glad you asked, eager young forum member.  Again, stolen from Gavin:
Participating is easy! Just send me a PM with your address, and I'll send you mine back. All you have to do after that is send me your cards along with a self-addressed and stamped envelope. After that, just relax and wait for your return package to make its merry way to you. It's that simple!

All participants must have their cards to me by December 15th-ish. They will be redistributed and sent off over the weekend, and hopefully everybody will have theirs by December 25th. Please remember to budget enough time for your cards to arrive, it should take 2-5 days by US Post.

Brand new accounts are excluded to avoid gaming the system. If you try and game the system to get more presents, I will catch you. Please don't do it. It will just result in a sad face for both of us.

That self-addressed stamped envelope is kind of an important part.  It's how I get your gift back to you.  I like you guys, but I'm not going to go buy stamps for all of you.

International readers
: If you're mailing internationally (outside the USA), we can work that out on a case by case basis via PM. In general, I'd appreciate if you sent a label with your address on it along with something like an international reply coupon,  money for postage, US currency, or money by paypal - some way so that I'm not stuck paying the return postage for you ;).  I think most of the rates for shipping a letter from the USA internationally are ~$1-3, so it's not all that more expensive than it is for within-USA.

This is nice and all, but who are you and why would I trust you with cards?

Another good question, my intrepid friend.  I mainly deal with the MTGO side of these forums.  However, due to technical limitations (pixels vs cardboard), this type of event is better held on this side of the forums.  I mainly deal with mentoring new players on MTGO and helping out with technical issues, which got me invited to the 2010 CCC (see sig).  I've even met Zammm in person!
/street cred
Over hear, I mainly lurk a bit, though I do love playing some 3CardMagic, currently hosted by Just_a_Cleric.

Moar Stuffs!

You want to know a little more about this whole affair? Well, you can check out last years holiday card exchange on MTGSalvation: forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t...
That shows you what type of things people do with this type of event and doubles as a bit more street cred for myself, if you read the whole thread....

Cliff Notes!

* PM me your address, I'll respond with my address
* Alter some Magic Cards!
* Ship me said MTG cards along with a self-addressed stamped envelope
* Anxiously away for your goodies to arrive!

Gifts for WotC/R&D/etc!@!

I forgot to mention this at first, but I'm altering a decent bit of cards that I plan to send in a package to WotC, both as a general gift and things for specific peoples.  So, if you'd like to give a gift to WotC or a specific member of WotC, you can send that along too, with clear indication as to what goes to WotC, and I'll include that in the package I send to WotC. Though, I suppose you could just do this yourself directly or something.....

Sounds like a lot of fun. Now to pick a card to alter and figure out how to get it altered properly...

Well, it's certainly fine for Canadians or other 'international' folk to participate, it just becomes slightly more complicated and expensive.  The comment about an intra-Canada system would just be to make things easier/cheaper/faster.  However...the only way I know if that type of thing should be set up is if, like, a dozen Canadians want to participate, which I'd know if they PM me...

Sounds really cool, although I'm really unfamiliar with how physical mails work these days. Might sound stupid, but it's not like I ever use it.

Probably easier to figure out than how to do a good alter though. Even if I have an idea.

Just, uh, sharpie a mustache and monocle on some crappy common nobody wants.
That seems pretty lazy.  If I expect others to really try, then I should make the effort too.

BTW, what paints are best for painting on a card, and do you need to prepare teh surface at all?
If there is alot of interest from our Canadian friends, perhaps we can get Zammm to arrange an intra-Canadial system as to avoid "international" shipping for those users.  /me nudges Zammmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'd be happy to be the middleman for a intra-Canadian version of this if there's enough interest.

I'll confirm Kaioshin as trustworthy...but not necessarily sane. No sane person has a beard like he does.

Last I checked I think acrylics were the paint of choice, but I don't know for certain what needs to be done to prepare a card. (Other than cleaning it, which probably helps.)

You should see now that I can unlease it's "true length".  Apparently it just curls too much, making it appear much shorter.  So, I have to tie it up when I go to sleep to keep it...extended.

Sorry for the bump, but this is the type of thread that needs it sometimes :P

---

On topic though, I bought some acrylic paint pens to use for altering.  They seem to work okay.  Fine point sharpies can do quite a fine job, though.  Flat edge razors can both take off a bit of paint if you 'drew outside the lines' or actually remove some of the card ink itself (though this is easier with some expansions than with others). Sometimes I'll just scrape off the card art itself to make a text bubble or something.

I'm totally in. I just spent twenty minutes looking through commons with my girlfriend, and we got eight total cards that will be altered in some way. I may through in a ninth, make it a rare, and alter it only by writing Merry Christmas and a signature. Who knows. What do you guys think? I like to be generous, considering the holiday season.

Expect a badly done Sphinx Summoner made to look like Rainbow Dash performing a Sonic Rainboom. And Poison Counters modified to look like baked bads. And some other stuff.

His name is Vekkie!
Real men hold shift. If everyone has their fingers in the pie, then someone is eating fingers.
I have a lot of cards... but not a ton of value.

What do people want...?

Personally, I could care less about value.  What I want is something that I would actually use.  I would prefer an altered Sakura-Tribe Elder (or a playset) over an altered Grindstone, for example.  I already have a couple of ideas for cards that I will alter (or deface), and none are valuable.

Unfortunately, he lives in Brazil, so he can't.

what? do you ceremonially light your deck on fire after a win?

I don't think there are any cards like that. There are things that prevent you from activating activated abilities, things that increase their cost, and things that counter them, but I don't think anything triggers from them specifically. There are things that trigger from targeting, so that might be relevant, but I can't think of anything that triggers from targeting a player. I'm almost positive there's nothing that triggers from damage being prevented.

You guys need to convince Vektor480 to alter some stom crows.  That would be epic.

Unfortunately, he lives in Brazil, so he can't.

He could, it would just cost him ~$2-4 rather than $1.  Heck, if he would agree to do storm crow alters, I would even pay for return shipping to Brazil.

OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

I like storm crow because I really like crows in real life, as an animal, and the card isn't terribly stupid, but packs a good deal of nostalgia and also a chunck of the game's history. So it's perhaps one of the cards I have most affection to, but not because "lol storm crow is bad hurr hurr durr".

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.
