Short End of a Trade?

Hey Guys,

So, I'm just getting back into MTG and I went to a draft tonight. After I was done drafting, I start trading with a guy who stopped by to do some quick traders.

I don't remember all the cards involved, but I do recall that he wanted 3x NecroSkitters. He told me they were worth a $1 each, and we traded them at that value. Also there was a Thought Lash that he said was a $1.

If the cards were that value, I feel the trades would've been pretty fair and I believed him and felt that he was probably right. He did have a smart phone which he used to look up a few values, and I feel stupid for not having him check NecroSkitter.

Anyways, long story short, I come home and looked up the price to find NecroSkiiter is around $5-$6 and Thoughtlash is actually worth around $4-$5...some places more and some places less.

Honestly, I'm kinda mad (mostly at myself) for not double-checking and losing close to $15 on the trade.

I'm sure I'll see him again, and I kinda want to point out the Necro's were worth more than I/he thought, and see if we can do something to compensate for the fact.

I know this is probably bad form, but since this was an in person trade, what do you guys think?
What did you get for them? Cards (which?) or 4$?
Hey Guys,

I'm sure I'll see him again, and I kinda want to point out the Necro's were worth more than I/he thought, and see if we can do something to compensate for the fact.

I know this is probably bad form, but since this was an in person trade, what do you guys think?

Honestly?

Just leave it. It was your bad for being ignorant before hand, no offense intended. If anything it's just a good show of character on his part, don't deal with him, and I'd definitely say don't play him.

People that'll lie over a few bucks probably wouldn't play too fair either.

Personally though I'm not the type to trade for monitary value, if you happened to of read my thread earlier, so if you at least got something worthwhile to you out of it I don't see a huge issue.

Just my 2cents for whatever that's worth.
You might be correct. One of the reasons I didn't ask him to look them up is because another person was agreeing with him that they would be worth $1, at most. They both said they weren't really used anymore, and were super cheap. I know this generally true with most rares, and just kinda took there word for it. Now I feel kinda tricked. I'm not sure if he really meant to deceive me or not, since some of the cards he quoted were higher than their actual price, as seen in the red below

I actually remember for the most part, what the actual trade was.

It was
Trade P. 1
My
Sun Titan-$8 , Thought Lash-$4-5 $1, Textless FNM Ponder $3
for
CopperLine Gorge $8, 2x Beast Within $1.50-$2, 4x Scorch $1 for all 4??

and P. 2
My
Varchild's War-Rider $1
3x NecroSkitter $5-$6 (total $15-$18) $1x3 = $3
Foil Plague Boiler $1.50-2?? ($3)
Foil uncommon (gives tokens +1/+1 Vigilance
Foil Phantatog
Captain Sisay $3
Dolmen Gate .75 $3

for his
Galvony Township x2 $2 each?=$4? ( he thought they were $5 each--until he looked them up and saw them at $3.50 on some site)
Mentor of the Meek x2 $4-$5 each $8-$10 total

These are prices that I mostly looked up on TCG Player, so it could be different at other places. I'm not sure what place most people use. I do think I'm going to invest in a Smart Phone before too long. My phone can connect to the net, but it's rather slow and I don't know what sites are easy to use on my Cel Phone. It's kinda tough to look up cards on TCG player using my current phone (a Samsung Alias)
This sounds odd, but I only trade with people I know and like. Getting a trade exactly even is frustrating and I've eatin some on trades and received some on others. Kinda like a floating loan. I usually look up the high end cards or something thrown in to even something out.

I will say its not proper to look for compensation after the fact. Like traders regret or something. Chuck it down to lessons learned. It is also that this guy might honestly not have known. He had to check on the townships and he would have been ripping himself off there. If the guy is just nice he might try to make you happy, but he's under no obiligation to. See if he wants to voluntarily do something about it, but I'd not expect it.

To be fair, I would have assumed Necro is a dollar rare if asked to take a guess. Like, does he have any application outside of casual and a combo deck I've lovingly dubbed Foilbait?

He tried to cry foul again but everyone else said he insisted I use my actual Chaos Orb and that was my actual Chaos Orb. I used it, flipped it and wiped most of his board. Unsurprisingly, that only worked once and only because everyone present thought it was hilarious.

Same. He was a dollar rare not too long ago... I suppose infect makes a good casual deck with him, which could explain the price rise.

Edit: 2,49$ when I bought it 2 years ago... Still, big upgrade lately.
I would have assumed Necro to be a dollar rare as well.

Also... I just noticed I have an earlier join date than RPJesus. Yay.
Hey a deal is a deal.

That's your fault for 1: Not knowing the aproximate value of your cards and 2: Not checking yourself.

What I do when I trade is I write down all the values for your cards, then for mine. Then add or subtract until they add up. Easy!

Also, I think starcitygames.com has the most accurate prices, and is what I use as a reference.

Edit: Yeah, that does suck though. Necroskitters are going for $6 on scg.com right now.

If the guy isn't a total jerk, you might ask him politely to compensate for the short trade though. I know if I ever accidently short traded someone I would probably be willing to throw some extra cards at 'em to make up for it.

I blame Modern. It's like a calculated ploy to double the price of all cards (Even those not legal in modern for some reason) in a sinister scheme to kill the secondary market :33.

And how. Really I count my true join date as late 07, since until then I had made like one post and never visited the forums. Then I got to college and was all "Broadband? Cool, this shouldn't impede my ability to get [Debutantes avert your eyes] done at all, right gaiz? ... Gaiz?"

Deal is a deal.  In the future, don't trade unless you are familiar with/have the ability to look up card values.  You at least know what this guy is about, so you can avoid him in the future.  If you're in a more vindictive mood, spread the word about his trading ethics to your fellow card shop peoples.
You made a trade while not knowing your card's value. You can only blame yourself. What's even worst is that he checked for card prices and you didnt ask him to check them too. If he had a smart phone and was checking his stuff and he wanted to trade with you, I'm sure he would have been happy to show you the prices as well. Again you only have you to blame. Considering he might or might not have been trying to swindle you, you might as well approach him just once, in a friendly manner to be compensated. Dont be aggresive, dont blame him, just tell him that you're kind of disappointed because you've checked the prices online and saw the value of certain of those cards. If he want to compensate you, lucky you, if he doesnt, that's all you should do. Live and learn.

As a tip : Separate your valuable cards from the rest (1$+) and make yourself an excel sheet. The prices change from time to time, especially recent cards, but they still dont change that much. Once you're done sorting out the 1$+ cards from the rest, you can just put them in order. Once you're done, you can simply put them in sleeves with a little piece of paper with the price, there you go, a failsafe way to know your card's value. Update the list from time to time and rearrange your cards (especially when a new set of cards come out and maybe 1 month after that set as been out, these are the times when card value fluctuate the most)
I love trolls Dont hate me because I'm blunt and you cannot handle it
