This thread is for discussion of this week's Booster Draft Simulator, which goes live Monday morning on magicthegathering.com.

4 White Creatures                                                                         5 Plains
1 Gideon's Lawkeeper                                                 10 Mountains
1 Stonehorn Dignitary
1 Benalish Veteran

2 Spirit Mantle
1 Day of Judgment
1 Lifelink

2 Artifact Creatures
2 Thran Golem

9 Red Creatures
1 Volcanic Dragon
1 Gorehorn Minotaurs
1 Blood Ogre
1 Stormblood Berserker
3 Goblin Arsonist
1 Goblin Tunneler
1 Goblin Piker

6 Red Spells
2 Goblin Grenade
1 Fireball
1 Firebreathing
1 Chandra's Outrage
1 Incinerate

13 Sideboard
2 Pride Guardian
1 Act of Treason
1 Goblin Bangchuckers
1 Mighty Leap
1 Divine Favor
1 Stave Off
2 Manic Vandal
1 Peregrine Griffin
1 Warstorm Surge
1 Slaughter Cry
1 Firebreathing

Here's what I picked:

Round 1: Garruk, Primal Hunter; Aven Fleetwing; Elvish Archdruid; Skinshifter; Sacred Wolf; Garruk's Companion; Llanowar Elves; Birds of Paradise; Negate; Llanowar Elves; Fog; Phantasmal Bear; Ponder; Demon's Horn; Mountain

Round 2: Pentavus; Arachnus Web; Amphin Cutthroat; Plummet; Rampant Growth; Manalith; Merfolk Mesmerist; Merfolk Mesmirist; Titanic Growth; Sacred Wolf; Bountiful Harvest; Reclaim; Plummet; Firebreathing; Plains

Round 3: Elixir of Immortality; Garruk's Companion; Overrun; Stingerfling Spider; Ice Cage; Divination; Rampant Growth; Garruk's Companion; Trollhide; Worldslayer; Titanic Growth; Lava Axe; Reclaim; Demistify; Swamp

Now I'd like some general opinions on a 40-card deck with these picks. I'm thinking green-blue.
Holy ****, .

"Go, then. There are other worlds than these." -- Stephen King, The Gunslinger

Please feel free to copy this message into your sig.

Round 1:
Garruk, Primal Hunter
Llanowar Elves
Elvish Archdruid
Skinshifter
Sacred Wolf
Gravedigger
Trollhide
Birds of Paradise
Unsummon
Brindle Boar
Fog
Phantasmal Bear
Ponder
Plains
Mountain

As with (almost) everyone else, the first 4-5 picks are obvious.  Pick 6 I chose Gravedigger as the preferable option over Garruk's Companion in the event that I didn't get enough to go mono green.  Then the green came again, but BoP suggests the possibility of splashing.

Round 2:
Doom Blade
Arachnus Web
Deathmark
Naturalize
Plummet
Giant Spider
Shock
Plummet
Rampant Growth
Sacred Wolf
Negate
Reclaim
Titanic Growth
Firebreathing
Plains

And I get to start with my 2nd favorite card to splash.  Thought hard about Pentavus, and if I'd been definitely going mono green it's the choice, but I don't like having no removal. Then more removal of various sorts kept coming.  A late shock in case more red comes, then a late Rampant growth to assist the splashing.

Round 3:
Trollhide
Garruk's Companion
Overrun
Stingerfling Spider
Arachnus Web
Vastwood Gorger
Lure
Runeclaw Bear
Demystify
Worldslayer
Duskhunter Bat
Lava Axe
Goblin Tunneler
Demystify
Swamp

Starting to get worried until I get the green fireball followed by the green skinrender.  Then another finisher in lure.  For building, I lean towards splashing Doomblade, Shock, Gravedigger & (maybe) lava axe off of the BoP, Rampant Growth, and one each swamp & mountain.
It won't be surprising to see everybody end up with green decks out of this draft, but the marginal choices and differences in secondary colors may be interesting.

Round 1: Garruk, Primal Hunter, Hunter's Insight, Elvish Archdruid, Skinshifter, Sacred Wolf, Garruk's Companion, Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, Unsummon, Brindle Boar, Fog, Phantasmal Bear, Ponder, Demon's Horn, Mountain
Round 2: Pentavus, Arachnus Web, Deathmark, Plummet, Rampant Growth, Rampant Growth, Shock, Plummet, Rampant Growth, Sacred Wolf, Negate, Goblin Grenade, Grand Abolisher, Firebreathing, Plains
Round 3: Aether Adept, Serra Angel, Overrun, Stingerfling Spider, Arachnus Web, Divination, Rampant Growth, Ponder, Trollhide, Reclaim, Ponder, Lava Axe, Goblin Tunneler, Demystify, Swamp

p1p2  I like Hunter's Insight a lot, as card advantage opportunities are scarce, but Llanowar Elves is also reasonable.
p1p4  Sacred Wolf felt weak this early, and Lurking Crocodile isn't inspiring, either.
p2p3  There's not much here, and I decided to just counter-draft DeathmarkAutumn's Veil might just be better for that purpose.
p2p4  It was either Naturalize or Plummet for the sideboard.  As it turned out, we could have gotten a couple more Plummet later on but no more Naturalizes.

My build:
Llanowar Elves, Birds of Paradise, Phantasmal Bear, Ponder, Ponder, Ponder, Skinshifter, Garruk's Companion, Rampant Growth, Rampant Growth, Rampant Growth, Rampant Growth, Elvish Archdruid, Sacred Wolf, Aether Adept, Hunter's Insight, Arachnus Web, Arachnus Web, Divination, Trollhide, Garruk, Primal Hunter, Stingerfling Spider, Serra Angel, Overrun, Pentavus, 3 Plains, 3 Island, 9 Forest

Splashing for the Serra Angel may be a bit greedy; on the other hand, as long as we do so, it might make sense to go ahead and throw in the Grand Abolisher, too.  Overall, it might seem a bit light on creatures, but with 3 Ponder, 4 Rampant Growth, a Divination, and a Hunter's Insight, we should be able to draw the big threats consistently enough.
Like last week, here's a comment on all my picks as I made them. I think I went okay, I hate how much I spent waffling on my second (er, third if you could splashing Gravedigger) color.

Round 1:
Garruk, Primal Hunter - You do not pass a plansewalker, let alone one that is probably the second most powerful limited walker in the set. And even that's because milling ten cards is a LOT in limited. We need to cut green and cut it hard if we want to use him though.
Llanowar Elves - Yay, no uncommon missing = no mind control taken! Or Overrun, which would be much worse for us because it would force them green... hm, this is a hard choice, but without any creatures to use it with, I think the ramp and Primal Hunter fixing wins out. JUST, Hunter's Insight is pretty good.
Elvish Archdruid - Good cards here, but none good enough to make us stop cutting green when there are good green cards here too. I'd say... the Archdruid is better, as we can always get more Stampeding Rhino's later, but I may just like lords too much for my own good! ((Editors note: And of course we never see a rhino or elf of any kind ever again XD))
Skinshifter - The perfect pack. Skinshifter is a bomb, and by taking it we have effectively completely cut green to our right.
Lurking Crocodile - Nothing worth much here in other colors except Wring Flesh. Now the question is Lurking Crocodile or Sacred Wolf. If we get more elves, bloodthirst will often be on, so... Crocodile. ((Editors note: And then we get two Trollhides. I am a reverse psychic.))
Gravedigger - Garuuk's Companion is solid, and again, nothing worth shifting gears. That is a LATE Gravedigger though, it's a shame we have nothing to dig for. Wait... hm... okay, let's take the Gravedigger, it has more upside and G/B is actually a good combination.
Trollhide - ...holy hell, someone is going to go green to our right. Umm... we don't have much to ramp into, so even with lord Elves are a little meh. I guess... Trollhide is the pick.
Birds of Paradise - That is some solid white, but W/G is a bad combo... Birds seems the pick. It doesn't do much, but it fixes well and we don't know what our second color is yet.
Unsummon - That is a LOT of blue... Blood Seeker is fairly weak, so let's try to go into blue just in case? If that's the case, then... Bear or Unsummon seems the pick. Unsummon might be better since green already has some good creatures.
Amphin Cutthroat - Picking Brindle Boar might unintentionally cause me to play it in my deck, so I'll avoid it... hm, blue or black here? Blue seems more open, so I'll take the Cutthroat.
Hideous Visage  Seems I was wrong... well we can always splash blue, we have a Birds. Fog is okay, but Hideous Visage can actually be a pretty good finisher.
Tormented Soul - Okay, maybe both blue and black ARE open. As it is... black is more powerful in conjuction with green in my opinion, and Gravedigger trumps Unsummon, so Tormeneted Soul is the pick. It can turn on our crocodile! And could be brutal with Trollhide...
Ponder - Darn, wrong choice AGAIN. Or... I have no idea. Ponder.
Demon's Horn - Marginally more useful than a plains.
Mountain - Marginally more useful than a Demon's Horn.

Round 2:
Pentavus - We have ramp and nothing to ramp into? Here, have a Pentavus! I hate passing that Doom Blade though...
Carnage Wurm - See above, Carnage Wurm is strong enough with all our ramp it's worth taking over what little removal there is in this pack.
Mind Rot - This is hard, but only because all of these are bad... I like Black more than Blue though, so Mind Rot seems the pick anyway.
Plummet - I'd say this meant red is open, but all of these cards are horrible. We have enough fat Harbor Serpent isn't even tempting, so Plummet is the pick.
Rampant Growth - More jank? Rampant Growth me. Or Titanic Growth... hm... no Rampant seems best.
Giant Spider - Spider is solid, even if it means passing removal. I don't want to go all in on black as it might not be open.
Shock - SHOCK?! It's worth splashing with all our fixing.
Plummet - Die Griffin, die!
Titanic Growth - Another Growth pick? This time I think we take the trick.
Sacred Wolf - Some black here, but all of it is worse than Sacred Wolf anyway.
Negate - Hate the Negate?
Goblin Grenade - Why is goblin grenade so late?? Too bad we have no goblins and I don't want to risk it as a pick... Reclaim is awful, but it... well okay Grenade it is!
Plummet - Yay plummet! THere is no way this should be so late.
Firebreathing - Boo Firebreathing!
Plains - Why is this plains going so late?! This AI is crazy.

Round 3:
Gorehorn Minotaurs  - Nothing CRAZY here, but a lot of solids. Hm... no removal either to make things easy. We're dipping in red, and we can splash the Digger, so Gorehorn seems the best pick by far. We only have one wolf for the Hide anyway, and we need more creatures.
Crimson Mage - Tempted to get some grenade fodder, but with our big creatures to ramp into, giving them Haste can be an absolute beating.
Overrun - I was going to complain about being torn between Black and Red, but OVERRUN!!!! WOOOO!
Stingerfling Spider - One of the best uncommons of the set, I am snatching this up.
Goblin Arsonist - Ok, we need a creature here if Overrun is going to be any good. And as long as we have the grenade we might be able to get a few goblins to set it up... Arachanus Web is good, but overruning is better, so Goblin Arsonist it is.
Goblin Arsonist - Gorger goes criminally late, and we have enough fat... Arsonist. ((Editors Note: It didn't wheel, and I'm actually unsure on that now. Ah well.))
Rampant Growth - Well we do have a pentavus, but... is the ruins good enough? Perhaps, but I don't want to take the chance with so much heavy green in here. Growth.
Garruk's Companion - Companion > Bear
Trollhide - Troll Hide wheeled! That is awesome.
Reclaim - We won't play anything here, and worldslayer could be hillarious if we're short of playables! Nah, reclaim is ok...
Titanic Growth - Growth. Of the Titanic.
Lava Axe - Lava Axe is pretty good.
Goblin Piker  - Oh wow, two goblins?? We might be able to actually run our grenade!
Demystify - Hate.
Swamp - Double hate. I hate swamps, I don't want anyone to use them!

I waffled way too much on colors, but all in all I'm happy with the draft.

This deck can serve up a remarkable beating, although the shortage of removal against decks light on flyers could pose problems. There isn't much to discuss, since the picks are mostly handed to us through the first pack, and for the most part the second and third. For the folks on the Wizards team: I understand the need to let randomness take its course, but it deeply diminishes the value of the Viewer to have extremely obvious picks with few or no viable alternatives, especially the first pick of the first pack. Please consider randomizing the packs again when something like this comes up. Also, the AI seems to drastically undervalue one-drops: Does "the collective intelligence of Magic's R&D department" really believe Phantasmal Bear and Tormented Soul should be regularly going umpteenth pick? Back to this draft: One of the few major choices here was Doom Blade v. Pentavus, and in a pool with only one solid color, plenty of meat and no removal, the Blade is a superior pick over the expensive rare. As for the option of splashing blue, or even making it a major second color: I saw a lot of Frost Breaths going around, but few people seem to have taken them even if they were in blue. That card is basically removal if you can capitalize on the window of opportunity it provides for smashing your opponent's face, and GU dearly needs removal.

I thought about it and just felt that monogreen wasn’t going to do it alone. I looked at the cards that I had drafted and saw that some blue would give me a Ponder, Unsummon, and Negate, and serra angel is too good not to use, even if I hate drafted her. With 3 Rampant Growths and Birds of Paradise, should be able to get the WW and U costs.

Sideboard: 1 Mountain +  Shock/2 Swamp + Doom Blade/Deathmark I can get some creature removal this way if I splash.

2 Plummets for flyers, naturalize for enchantments, 2 fogs for creature decks, 2 reclaims, also useful for creature attrition battles or getting garruk back. 2 arachnus webs, good against non-green decks as pacifism. Trollhide, okay if I had got some sacred wolves. None of this green sideboard is good enough to main though over the other colors’ cards.

I'm sorry an 8th pick 'Shock' out of pack two??? I was building towards a Green Red deck but when I saw that I just clicked threw to completion. This may be a fantasy based game but it shouldn't be a fantasy based draft.

It'd certainly be fun to play a deck like this tho.
Well this was my draft, mono color seems to be super strong in m12 draft from my experience (I have won with mono red, mono black, and mono white)

My deck would probably look like

Creatures (15):
2X  Llanowar Elves
1x Elvish Archdruid
1x Skinshifter
1x Birds of Paradise
1x Pentavus
1x Giant Spider
2x Sacred Wolf
3x Garruk's Companion
1x Stingerfling Spider
1x Vastwood Gorger
1x Brindle Boar

Planeswalker:
1x  Garruk, Primal Hunter

Enchantments:
2x Arachnus Web
1x Trollhide

Instants:
1x Titanic Growth
2x Plummet

Sorcery:
1x Overrun
1x Rampant Growth

Land:
16x Forest

Although my green creatures are a little weak, I have the fixers to accellerate out a Pentavus or Garruk, Primal Hunter.  The idea is to hopefully aggro out.  However with such weak creatures if they run too many beat sticks I will likely lose.
So... anyone NOT pick Garruk P1P1?

Not much to say. The choice seemed to be monogreen, or G/x splash.

Despite green being obvious, there were some pick 'dilemmas'...

pick dilemmas

P1P5: Lurking Crocodile vs Sacred Wolf

Croc is the better sideboard card. However if I drop an elf on turn 1, the wolf is a better turn 2. Plus, I hope to be picking up at least one trollhide which is ridiculous with the wolf.

P1P7: Llanowar Elves vs Sacred Wolf vs Trollhide

I eliminate the wolf, as I have one laready and hope I can pick up one more. Trollhide is the 'combo' with the wolf that I want, but because I have an archdruid, the elf is slightly better. I take the elf. At this stage I am looking at mana ramp.

P1P9: Unsummon vs wurm's tooth vs aluring siren

Let's be clear. Even if I end up monogreen, I am not picking the tooth. Unsummon can pick off that one creature holding you back for the alpha swing.

P1P10: Brindle Boar vs Levitation

If I get a couple of decent blue cards, levitation is a perfect compliment to green's ground based beatdown. Brindle boar is already competing with wolves and archdruids and who knows what else.

P2P2: carnage wurm vs arachnus web

I'm very tempted by the web, as green as little in the way of removal. However, the fact that I have four mana accelerators makes the wurm a turn 5 possibility.

P2P3: autumn's veil vs deathmark vs celestial purge

Given the severe lack of removal I am tempted by the purge, but the veil allows me to play around doom blade, mind control and mana leak, which are probably my three worst matchup cards.

P2P4: plummet vs naturalize

I took naturalize but plummet might have been the pick here. Naturalize answers mind control, pacifism, oblivion ring, crown of empires, thran golem, trollhide and spirit mantle. To be honest, unless we are talking about one of the bomb rares, I'd rather free up my carnage wurm than kill a flyer, and I do have levitation, skinshifter and pentavus as a fallback.

P2P5: Plummet vs rampant growth vs titanic growth

Again, I want to pick plummet. I am hoping one of them wheels, and stick to my ramp strategy to pick rampant growth. Plus, if I do get a fireball or other must-splash card, the RG trumps.

P2P6: Rampant Growth vs manalith vs giant spider

The spider is too good a creature against a fast aggro deck to pass.

P2P7: Lurking Crocodile vs rampant growth

Again, good creature trumps mana acceleration, even in a ramp deck. I want to keep the pressure up and blow through my opponent's removal spells.

P3P7: Lure vs Rampant Growth vs Unsummon

Lure is terribly underrated. If I didn't have overrun already and an unsummon I'd probably have picked it. Three rampant growths and a BoP mean I can play levitation main deck if I want to, which is probably as useful, but now that I have a stingerfling spider I'd actually rather have unsummon. Plus, unsummon is a card I would prefer not to play around.

Amazingly, I decide not to run the BoP or the giant spider main deck. If I am up against flyers, I would board in the BoP, the spider, levitation, plummets and another island.

Against a slow controlling deck I have the option of manabarbs + shock + Lava Axe, and again the BoP.

I think this deck would do quite well but it is ridiculous that the first four picks steered the draft so quickly.

Notable synergy

Turn 1 elf, turn 2 druid, turn three gorger.

Pentavus into overrun = 20 trample damage in the air, all by itself

Sacred wolf + trollhide = 5/3 hexproof regenerator

Carnage Wurm + unsummon... assuming you don't get it out bloodthirsty, it is likely it can trample to bloodthirst all by itself.

Garruk + titanic growth... make a beast when Garuk ETB, next turn draw seven

Trollhide + worldslayer... when you absolutely have to kill every m@@@@@@@@.... (just make sure the trollhide is not on the creature you equip!)
The Draft:

The Deck: (I'm eyeballing it, without laying it out it may be suboptimal)

I really, really wanted black to work, but it just didn't.  It's pretty much an 11 Forest, 6 Island deck with a birds to help out with the double blue on Aether Adept, who, along with Unsummon, are our only answers to huge monsters (besides just winning with overrun).  Unless they're flyers, double plummet in the sideboard and Stingerfling in the main should take care of it.

Heavy removal Bloodthirst decks (the best decks to draft) should be held off long enough by the combo of Aether Adept/Unsummon, Trollhide Blockers, and Frost Breath/Arachnus Web tying up their attackers until we can get our big monsters out.  Although, because black didn't work out, we have no removal for Goblin Fireslinger/Tormented Soul, so our Garruk gets much worse as we'll almost never ultimate against those decks.

In retrospect, this is too much ramp for not enough big threats. However given what was available at no point did I really consider dipping into a second color except for the Pentavus vs Doom Blade decision, but at that point getting more threats was of greater concern so I just stayed in green. Really I just picked too fast without much thought as it seemed to build itself. Given this amount of Ramp I feel comfortable running just 16 lands, but I wish that 1x Plummet maindeck really had been a threat and not a silver bullet. Overall this was just a weird pool. It's extremely rare that I ever just pick one color, and these packs forced you into it.

This simulator is so unrealistic

Lots of people 3rd picked the Archdruid, I'd argue that its good for the mana ramp, but the Rhino is a better pick overall.  I think that early in the draft you're committing a little too much to a mono green plan if you do that.  Of course, maybe people drafted it multiple times, which kinda skews the information, knowing how many Llanowars will be available...  Anyway, splash for doom blade and shock.  You'd have to get majorly screwed not to win this draft.

I was disappointed seeing Garruk in pack one again on this draft simulator... with all the senarios, I would liked to have seen a tougher first choice P1.....

I have a question.... how many titanic growths do people think is enough in a mono green or a green/splash x type deck? I saw I could draft up to 4 here... it seems excessive but would make any boarded creatures hard to kill with anything other than straight destroy spells... and with troll hide and all the hex proof creatures available to green in the draft, does this not add more weight to 2-3 or even 4 titanic growths in one deck??

I honestly don't know how many I would add as a maximum...

Rice
svyelunite - You're right that the Rhino is generally a better pick, but I went with the Elf in P1P2 to account for the high green cost of Garruk, and the Archdruid fits in with that plan (especially with the 2nd elf and BoP later on, who the hell is passing these?). I'd feel safer expecting green to go around the table and grap the Rhino on P1P11, since so many people seem to draft away from green.

Riceymuller - I wouldn't play more than 2, and I probably wouldn't take them over a Plummet if you're already drafting green unless I already had good removal or was drafting red as well.

In retrospect, with that much strong green in pack 1, I'd be really careful about watching for signals and try to splash black or red for good removal. I'd be intrigued to see how the draft would go without Garruk as a first pick.

well, this turned out to be an obvious choice of green for main color, though i found enough for a small splash of blue and white. alluring siren will be great for taking out cheep utility creatures, with divination being a nice card advantage. with white, quite obviously there is grand abolisher and serra angel.
First picked Garruk, then decided to pick the tutor to try and go for a control build with mana accel and fetch my win con (and even reccur them with reclaim)

I'm surprised nobody else has even mentioned Crown of Empires Pack 1 pick 3.  It's an expensive tapper, but it's still a tapper, and as we're clearly shaping up to be heavy-green, even pseudo-removal is looking pretty good here.  I'm underwhelmed with Archdruid in M12, even moreso than in M11 where he at least had Sylvan Ranger to pump (and get the extra mana from).  What is Archdruid doing here?  A 3-mana accellerant is hardly something to get excited about, and the pump ability is only going to hit the one or two Llanowar Elves you're going to get and the Gladecover Scouts that you shouldn't be running anyway.  Crown isn't great, but it's perfectly legitimate and can solve a lot of cards G sometimes has trouble with.

Didn't go as well as I wanted it to go. I didn't grab a pentavus because I already had some good access to strong creatures. Garruk was hard to pass up, though. Also, am I overvaluing frost breath? It seems like a REALLY good card.

Green Blue was my choice because the cards fit how I like to play. Get rid of the defense, than attack

Hmm... interesting. For a lark, I tried drafting as close to a mono-color deck as I could. Four out of five times, nothing really different seemed to happen with the top picks of the other drafters. But for Mono-Red... apparently Chandra jumps from position 3 to position 7. Is the drafter really so set in going for colors that up to 4 players would pass a Planeswalker?

Oh, and in case people are wondering how my Mono-Red went:

mono-green with a splash for shock and doom blade seems fun to play imo. i chose to not play the elvish archdruid because two llanowar elves does the job fine, and i decided to only run one fog rather than cut a rampant growth. i love rampant growth, and four of them plus birds of paradise make me very happy.
