The Dungeon

Welcome to The Dungeon! I am your Dungeon Master. Your goal is to delve deep into the cavernous abyss to face the mighty Lich Queen. She awaits you in the deepest level of the dungeon, but she has many minions protecting her. Fear not, for you are not alone in this quest. There are many others who shall join you - some to help...some to harm. Do you have what it takes to be named Dungeon Champion?

What is 'The Dungeon'?:

The Dungeon is a forum game/contest with elements of both traditional RPGs and strategy games. The Dungeon's rounds are held twice every week. Players submit cards according to the criteria and a score will be given to them on a scale of 0 - 50. Players advance to the next level after they have accumulated enough points. Once the first player advances past the final level, the game ends and that player is declared the winner.

You may join at any time. You may leave at any time. You do not have to feel obligated to participate in every round. Missing a round here or there will not affect your progress very much so feel free to drop in and out of the game as you will.

Rounds are held on Mondays and Thursdays, local time (UTC - 6:00), and last for two days each. Round scores are posted on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Nothing happens on Sunday.

How to Advance:
Each level has a minimum number of points you must have in order to advance to the next level. For example, levels 1-10 require you to have a minimum of 50 points to advance to the next level, so by level 10 you would need to have at least 500 points to advance to level 11.

You can only go down in the Dungeon, not up. So if you were on the second level and your score was reduced below 51, you would remain on the second level. There are certain effects that can change this rule.

Every 10 levels, there is a mini-boss. In addition to having enough points to advance to the next level, the score for your submitted card must meet a minimum score (not known by you). The difficulty of these mini-bosses increase until you finally reach the final level and face the Lich Queen herself!

Traps, Treasure, and other Stuff:
Traps: It's a trap!
Every round, there is a chance you will trigger a trap. Traps have all variety of effects but usually they just make you lose some points. Some traps affect only the person that triggers them and some affect everyone on the level.

Treasure: Shiver me timbers!

The exact opposite of a trap. Every round, there is a chance you will find treasure. Treasure comes in two forms - gold gives you bonus points; and items, which are powerful tools that will help you in your journey.

Items: They're totally cool.

Items are awesome. They help you in lots of cool ways. There are three types of items - weapons, armor, and trinkets.

Weapons - You may have only have 1 weapon equipped at a time. Most weapons have an "Active" ability, meaning you need to declare you're using it. (See the next section on Passive vs Active)

Armor - You may have only 1 armor equipped at a time. Most armor has a "Passive" ability, meaning you don't need to do anything other than equip it. (See the next section on Passive vs Active)

Trinkets - You may have only 2 trinkets equipped at a time. Trinkets do everything else that weapons are armor don't, such as granting free abilities.

Inventory - Any item you do not have equipped is in your Inventory. You may have only 4 items in your inventory. If you have more than 4, your bag becomes too heavy for you to carry and you cannot advance to the next level until you equip an item or declare you are dropping it.

IMPORTANT: Items you find are automatically placed in your inventory. You must declare you are a equipping/unequipping an item in order for that change to happen. Items in your inventory do not have any effect. Items must be equipped in order for them to work.

Skills and Abilities

Skills: Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.
Skills assist you on your way through the dungeon and can be purchased using points. You cannot get rid of a skill once it is purchased and the effect will always be active, so be careful before committing yourself to buying one.

From time to time, you may manage to get yourself a special skill. How you obtain a special skill, you'll never know, and you'll often never know what it actually does, but this section of this post will be updated whenever a player obtains one.

IMPORTANT: Each player starts with four skill slots. You gain a new skill slot every time you advance ten levels. You can't have more skills than you have skill slots. Special skills do not take up skill slots; they have their own limit.

Abilities: (Passive vs Active)
Class abilities, items, and skills are all assigned one of three categories: Active, Passive, or Active/Passive.

Active - You must declare you are using this ability/item/skill in order for it to happen. If you don't, it doesn't happen. If you have multiple active abilities you are using, you need to declare each separately. Some abilities require you to declare a target, this is a required part of declaring you are using the ability.

Passive - This ability just happens, whether you like it or not. No work is required on your part.

Passive/Active. This ability has two parts to it, an active AND a passive ability. The active ability must be declared, the passive ability just happens.

IMPORTANT: Items in your inventory do not have any effect. Items must be equipped in order for them to work.

Classes

Before beginning the game, each player must declare what class they will be playing. You cannot change your class, so be careful before committing yourself to one. Each class has its own strengths and weakness. Choose wisely!

General Note:
I'm a fairly busy person. I work five days of the week, eight hours of the day, starting at eight-thirty in the morning. When I'm not at work I'm spending time with my family or playing Magic. Most of my day is booked. I'll try to grade these as often as possible but I hope you'll be understanding if things get delayed once in a while. Thank you.

FAQ:

Q: Is it possible for a player to have a negative point value?
A: No, you cannot have negative points.

Q: When can I start using abilities? How often does "once a week" happen?
A: Players can begin using Active abilities after reaching level 4. Any ability that is "Once a week" has its timer reset every Sunday.

Q: What's your grading scale?
A: You will (usually) be graded based on this rubric, which I totally stole from somewhere:

xx/10: Wording; Color Pie; Templating
xx/10: Creativity; Ingenuity; 'Wow' Factor
xx/10: Balance; Printability
xx/10: Execution; Elegance; Understanding
xx/10: Flavor
-----------------------------------------
xx/50: Total

Bonus Points available for being super cool.

Rogues have been slightly nerfed. They now do 5 dmg instead of 6. But no, you cannot have a negative point value.

Cards are graded and THEN actions take place. So it's not a bad idea. If a person got a score of 35 for their first card, cleave would hit them for 5 and they would go down to 30.

~Ohhhh Snap
This is going to be extremely irritating. Cleave should target 2 or 3 players, not everyone. If even 4 people Cleave, i get dropped down by 20? I call shenanigans.
I'm sensing a little Cleave hate? Both Cleave and Mug are not very good after everyone starts moving their seperate ways onto different levels, as such, Smite and Bolt will become much better.

Perhaps to even things out I should not allow abilities to be used the first couple of rounds? If we get enough fighters Cleaving, NO ONE would advance past the first level! Let me know what you guys think!

What might work is to weaken it to 1 or 2 points for the first 3 or 4 rounds.
I say leave Cleave as is. If people wanna make enemies on the first round as quickly as possible I say let them. We'll see how well that works out for them as the rounds progress... *evil grin*

Edit: I still don't think Cleave should be handicapped at all. If you Handicap the warriors then that's not right to their class. Especially with a move as good as Smite, how will the warriors be able to work against that? Let them be with their Cleave. If you nerf one class than you better prepare to nerf all classes and trust me when that happens, NOBODY will be happy.
It's only five points. Start dishing out damage if you're angry at somebody.
Also to the Game Master. There are many ways you can take care of this problem without nerfinc classes. You mentioned there are traps and such. Also you explained that there may be challenges to cause loss of points. Let the pvp'ers waste their attacks. If you can only use abilities about once a week (like I thought it says) then all the pvp'ers will have nothing to defend themselves with when real trouble comes at them. I will save my Smite thank you very much. Also by the end of the challenge when it's safe, I will take my revenge on the person who caused me the most damage with my big nasty Smite.

I say adjust it. It's going to take much longer if people are earning 20 or 30 less points per round. For some people, that means they earn 0.
I wouldn't mind not being able to use my ability to cleave everybody until the 2nd or 3rd floor or something like that. Perhaps say that the 1st floor has a dampening field (floor effect) that nullifies all active abilities.

Yeah and what makes the first floor any different than the second floor, or the third floor, or the fourth floor?
Lets pretend that we do turn off abilities in the first round. We get to the second round and everybody has earned their points from the previous round. Some people have more points than others. Suddenly three people use Cleave. That's a loss in 15 points for every body except it will be 10 points for the three warriors that cleaved. Then lets say some people did not do so well in the first round and made, eh I don't know... 10 points. That means that person lost all of their points. So then how would that have been any different than having done it in the first round? Also if this was the case, why was the first round even neccesary?
All in all, this comes down to, either make the better card and win the points, or steal the points away from your opponent. That's how the game is played. If you take away the abilities in round one, then why bother having abilities at all?
Listen card design is cool and all, but we just want it spiced up a bit. Can't you guys just live a little and leave abilities alone? Just because you are losing now, does not mean you will be losing later. I can see this game will be swinging in different favors a lot. So let's just try it out how it is now. If it fails, then we'll figure out how to fix it when the time comes.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT UPDATE: There has been a lot of concern about how the start of the game will be regarding players using abilities and creating an environment that is not fun. At its core, this game is about designing cards, which shouldn't be hampered by the "un-fun" aspects of the game. Therefore, players will not be able to use "Active" abilities until they reach level 5. "Passive" abilities will remain active. This should spread players out a bit more and create a more competitive game.

Enchant Opponent
Whenever you would take a turn, enchanted player takes an extra turn instead.
At the beginning of enchanted players upkeep, he or she exiles the top ten cards of his or her library from play.
Even with all the time in the world...

Maybe I'll add "prestige" classes as players advance. Bards are very prestigious. Smile

can you give us grades now?  I want to design cards more than I want to worry about ranking.

Normal rounds start on Mondays and Thursdays. If we don't get any significant amount of new players by Wednesday, I will grade then and begin the next round on Thursday.
