Would Vampires be viable in Modern?

Since the format is sort of official, how do you guys feel about the deck? It's snuck in a few wins here and there with some top 8s, but is it fast enough to compete in the Modern format?

I tried coming up with a deck list for Legacy, but Merfolk and Goblins just outclass it. Would it be the same case against Jund/Faeries/Stoneforge in Modern?

Vampires doesn't have enough support across the modern format to do well in a competitive environment. It's been "ok" for the past couple of standards, but not enough to do well against decks with broader focus.

"Vampires" can restrict you to a tribal theme and influence deck choices to optimize value of cards. Cards like Malakir Bloodwitch and Abyssal Nocturnus function best with the deck supporting their strategy. Jace TMS and Stoneforge can fit about anywhere the colors support them. They are valued not only for power level, but the extreme versatility they provide.

In short, I think Vamps can do ok in a moderate modern environment, but I'd not want to take it somewhere with a higher than casual FNM competitive approach. You'll probably win some and lose some. If you are ok with that, I say have at it.

It's actually not a bad deck, by any means. Topping out your curve at Nocturnus and a few lashwrithes, the rest of the deck should be focused around disruption and establishing a solid board state.

I picked up a Vampire Onslaught from FNM last night and I was surprised how many people were just buying 2-3 decks to sell off the Dismembers and other money cards... kinda sad for people like me who just wants to play with it.

Anyway, here's the planned deck and I hope some of you old Vampire Vets can toss a few ideas too.

4 Aether Vial

4 Vampire Lacerator
3 Pulse Trackers
3 Viscera Seer

4 Kalastria Hightborn
4 Bloodghast
4 Vampire Hexmage
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir

4 Lightning Bolts
4 Dismember

4 Verdant Catacombs
4 Dragonskull Summit
4 Blackcleave Cliffs
3 Lavaclaw Reaches
7 Swamps

There's a few problems I'm facing since the space is so tight. There's some miss opportunities here with the lack Thoughtseize/Duress and Blightnings. Is there room for them in a Vampires deck or is strictly beat the face and come out winning?

Seems like Zoo and Cloudpost decks are going to be very popular, so I need to find a way to make Vampires competitive enough to stand toe to toe with them.
vial isn't very good here

Blue is the best color ever. How do you deal?  ------------------------------  Team GFG - "gulf, foxtrot, gulf"

Best Pauper Deck in the format, not close:

I'd cut Vial, makes you slow. I'd actually tilt towards Mono-Black, as going T1 Lacerator, T2 Highborn, T3 Highborn/Seer T4 Nocturnus is extremely powerful.
Should I have have elements that interact with my opponent than just hit them? Thoughtseize or Blightnings? I mean I could just plop down creatures and hope I can outrace them before their combo goes off, but wouldn't it be better to be prepared to interact with them? There's a lot of combos in Modern, so am I still better off being that linear?

I'm so used to playing MUC in Legacy, so I still have that mindset of interacting with my opponent.

Can someone elaborate a bit more with Aether Vials? It's the one thing that made me lose consistently in Legacy before Mental Misteps, so how is it weaker in Vampires? Wouldn't the ability to stop a planeswalker without being countered good enough, much less having a way to bring in guys without worrying about them being countered?

I think in a format where Merfolk, Affinity, Elves, Goblins and Tempered Steel are all faster, stronger, or better supported things, it seems sub-optimal as an archetype...

Gideon is not impressed by your triple white, incredibly difficult-to-manlipulate jank card.

I've been playing mono-blue in Legacy for a while now, so it's not like I run out, netdeck a tier 1 deck and gun sling with it. I'm not looking for a deck that flat out bodies other decks, but I really don't wanna get get bodied myself either.

I guess running down the various builds over the years, is the mono-black superior over the b/r builds we've been seeing in the past year? They seem almost like 2 different decks with the odd mana curves.
I wouldn't even think about sleeving up Vampires in Modern. Zoo is playing guys with respectable bodies and Nocturnus and Highborn are never going to stick. It might even be like when Jund was around where Lacerator was unplayable because opposing creatures (Putrid Leech then, Nacatl + Goyf + Knight of the Reliquary now) are just way better.
Current decks: Type II: B/R Vampires Extended: Modern: U/G Scapeshift 1.5: Ichorid, Elf Combo
Now that we have a section for modern, I'll be getting this moved there.
