Forum Game: Three Card Magic

A while back, there was a forum game called "Thee Card Magic". The idea was, players submitted decks of 3 cards, which were played against eachother in a round robin format by a third party. I thought I would restart it.  You can read the original here: Three Card Magic

More detailed rules, stolen from the original

1. I will play the games using proxies. I will decide matches as if both players play perfectly, and have full knowledge of all their opponents cards.
2. Matches will be played in a round robin format. Each match will consist of 2 games, one with a each player going first. 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. A draw occurs if neither player can force a win.
3. Players will pm their one deck to me. While not required, please post here to acknowledge your involvement, as well as to keep the thread on the first page for people to see.
4. Standard MTG rules apply. 20 life, the phases etc.
5. Players can not lose by being decked out. Note that this does not mean that the draw step is skipped--rather, that if a player attempts to draw a card for any reason and there are no cards in that player's library, nothing happens.
6. Decks contain exactly 3 cards. Those cards are all drawn as your "initial hand" at the start of the game.
7. All random effects (eg coinflips) you own go in favor of your opponent.
8. Wishes, Wild Research, and any other card that lets you get cards from out of the game cannot find anything.
9. I have the final say concerning disputes, rule infractions, and what I intend to have allowed and not allowed, this includes loopholes. If you are concerned about a potential loophole, please pm me.
10. Consider all results to be followed by the following disclaimer: As I am human I will make mistakes, because of this checking your own results is recommended.

Anything that prevents your opponent from casting spells or playing lands "this turn" (or "until end of turn"). This includes cost increases and "additional cost" abilities.

I suppose we get infinite mana? Else, three cards wouldn't be of much use. Or do we get a land per turn?

Yeah... Until next game, where it'll be right back. Seriously, there's no way to deal with Rancor in any format. It should be banned, except Gleemax is a lobbyist for the Rancor party, so that'll never happen.
You can't ban rancor, it just returns to your deck.

When talks about banning Jace first started, I was thinking that I would see him banned come June 20th. But as I think more about it, I don't really think that Jace is the problem anymore. Sure his power level leaves very little to the imagination (opening Jace is like opening a refrigerator box with a naked girl on the inside), and sure his price does have a strong impact on what players choose to play (playing Jace is like being intimate with a woman and she doesn't charge you in the morning), but it is not the source of all the problems in Standard.

How do people think saving room to print more abilities on cards is dumbing down the game?

Do you really think, say, Akroma would ever be printed if she said, "Akroma can block by creatures with this ability and cannot be blocked by creatures without this ability.  If a creature without this ability would deal combat damage by Akroma would be destroyed, prevent all combat damage that creature would deal to Akroma this combat.  Attacking does not cause Akroma to tap.  If Akroma is blocked and deals lethal damage, it deals the remainder of its damage to the defending player.  Akroma may attack and use abilities that require tapping in the casting cost the turn it enters the battlefield.  Akroma cannot be damaged, enchanted, equipped, blocked or targeted by black or red sources" rather than her "dumbed down" wording she has?  No freaking way.  Keywording and shorthand allows them to make complicated cards easy to play with, allowing them to be printed in the first place.

1. cast frankie peanuts2. ask opponent "will you concede the game this turn"? if they say yes, you win; if they say no, play a staying power
3. subsequently ask "will you attack this turn"? and "will you cast a spell this turn"? (using a Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir for the second question if necessary) to ensure they can't disrupt the combo
4. donate them a platinum angel
5. play a mox lotus and braingeyser them for every card in their library. play an opalescence and donate them a glorious anthem and a blacker lotus, then play enchanted evening. play and activate a mindslaver and then donate them a fastbond and the mox lotus (returning one of the donates to your hand with eternal witness or whatever)
6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

Everyone's life would be easier if players would, instead of coming to the 'net for help with a deck, just netdeck and be done with it. And I'm not talking about some Top 8 lists, for the Casualists, too, can benefit from netdecking. I've netdecked plenty of decks from the Casual Play forums from users such as Mown, Raedien, Floopfoot, and a few others. I snatched straight the heck out of my web browser. Yes, people, your original idea fell victim to a savage netdecker. You have been assimiliated. Suppose I wanted a Zombie deck. Why on earth would I spend time searching Gatherer for a decent list of Zombie cards when Raedien already did it for me? Taking time to be creative or waiting on people on the forums to tell you why your deck sucks or 'go to Casual forums' is a disasterous waste of time (to me).

No, they just spam them with ban requests. That being said, Magic was ruined back in Alpha when they added all that rules and cards [Debutantes avert your eyes]. My friends and I still like playing it the "pure" way (Basically we go into the woods and hit eachother with wiffle bats while shouting made up obscenities. You know, the way Garfield wanted it to be played).

Also decks have no color identity. -Starting life total is 20. And voila, now things are balanced.

The outer layer of the Magic: the Gathering box, the carton, or crust, is fairly thin and light, and contains largely aluminosilcates. Within that lies the middle layer, consisting of the familiar booster pack. Although solid, the booster packs' high temperatures allow them to acutally move around within the booster box. This flow, sometimes called convection, is cited by frustrated box mappers as one of WOTC's most genious uses of thermodynamics since the Ravnica block. No one knows what lies at the core of the booster box, but scientists theorize that it must be especially dense in order to make up for the large amount of fluff distributed amongst the booster packs.

MaRo has a thing for people opening boosters with bad cards. But since he can only get so many bad cards printed in each set, he has found a devious way of getting more bad cards into circulation: He makes entire print sheets with just bad rares, then puts them onto the assembly line. He proceeds to wring his hands and twirl his evil mustache that he grew for twirling purposes as a lightning bolt strikes in the background. Afterwards, he goes to make sure that the good cards are only opened by everyone's friends, and that we all only get to open bad cards. He does this by memorising each booster, than switching them around accordingly. Whenever someone complains about a card, he immediately jumps out from behind a chair to yell "WELL, IT'S NOT FOR YOU!" before merging back into the shadows in order to devise new ways in which he can screw over players, then claim that he has valid reasons for doing so.

I'm only opposed to it because it bears so little relation to how people actually play the game. The example of Miracles is actually a much better one then the Clone example I was trying to use. From the game's perspective, the card can move instantly from face down in the library to revealed in the hand and that's fine for the rules. But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

I know it's true, but I don't want the rules to actually straight-up tell me that.

JuliusPringle wrote:

So how do I just... introduce myself? "Hi, my name is Adam, wanna play magic with me?" Do I go to the counter and talk to the cashier?

Yeah. Talk to the cashier. Tell him/her that you want a Black Lotus, and if they don't have one tell them that the store isn't on par with what you expected.

Reach into your back left pocket. Pull out a deck list that you copied directly from some ChannelFireball top 8 Standard discussion, and ask for all the cards, as is, on that list. Then, ask for some random, probably terrible cards from whatever set is Standard legal. Say it's tech for the upcoming changes in the metagame.

Pull out a deck, and tell some random dude you wanna test (you have to use the term "test" for this to work) for Standard. Make sure that deck contains Kitchen Finks and Alluring Siren. Maybe throw in Nyxathid for good measure.

Finally, before you leave, spill (make it look like an accident) one hundred singleton, random cards onto the floor. Pick them up, put them in a pile, and say "EEE-DEE-AYCH".

I know this sounds dumb at first, but it will work. With the method outlined above, you will draw the attention of players that play older formats by asking for cards that no one on Earth can reasonably afford. You will get the attention of the wanna-be pro, Stomp-n00bz players by pulling out a well known decklist and declare that you have "tech" to make it better. You will get the attention of all the kind, helpful players by seemingly not knowing the most common format by having non-Standard legal cards in a deck that you claim is Standard legal. Finally, you catch all the rest of the Magic players by saying "EEE-DEE-AYCH" (EDH (or Commander)).

And there you have it. You will be talking to more people than you would have wanted to talk to in no time.

I suppose we get infinite mana? Else, three cards wouldn't be of much use. Or do we get a land per turn?

Nope, that's what makes it interesting - you have to get as much use as possible out of very little. There are a lot more possibilities than you may think

Quick question. What happens if both players' damage source (in other words, their one or two mana creature) gets killed? This is a horrible example since no one will use it, but let's say that both players drop a turn 1 Eager Cadet. What if a situation arises where a player has to block or lose the game because of one player's third card? Is the game just a draw?

Just submitted my deck. It's amazing. :D

So do we get a land per turn? Or what? There's no rules concerning how you decide what cards to play and when.
Yes, I believe we do get a land per turn. So, given standard right now, you could have 1 land, a 1-drop creature, and another card, or two lands and a 2cc creature. Or you could just play memnites/ornithopters.
AMCN Post 1: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/28306201/The_Angry_Magic_Card_Nerd:_Post_1_(Pale_Moon) AMCN Post 2: http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75842/28308299/The_Angry_Magic_Card_Nerd:_Post_2_(Mudhole) http://images.community.wizards.com/community.wizards.com/user/shadowacs/0a9a5a662b5c4080b14625c81d304146.jpg?v=144900
So something like:

Turn 1 - Glistener Elf
Turn 2 - Assault Strobe
             Attack Groundswell

I get it. I think. Now to think of some cards.

If you want to play lands, you have to actually include them in your 3 cards.

Are we limitted to one of each card?

You are correct, the game would be a draw. Remember matches will be decided using perfect play with perfect information, thus if any player can make an action that will force a draw as opposed to a loss, they will.

If you want to play lands, you have to actually include them in your 3 cards.

Are we limitted to one of each card?

Nope. You could play 3 Memnites if you'd like, or a plains and two Elite Vanguards

Just submitted my deck. It's amazing. :D

Rule 1. Perfect play with perfect information. Each player will try to force as many points as possible (either a tie or a win), and thus will make the corresponding decisions.

Edit: 9 decks so far, keep em coming!

I plan on expanding the format to eternal after this round, standard is jus meant to be an introduction, since a lot of people haven't played the game before.

Well, I myself think that Standard makes things a bit harder, but I can see how a more limited cardpool would makes things easier.

The main issue here seems to be newer players figuring out you don't get adittional lands, that you must pay for every card you want to cast. I think that enforcing this as much as possible would be worth it.

I shall participate in the next one, then

I'd play, but the idea that your banned list, by name (not type like dexterity or ante), is entirely composed of standard legal cards is ridiculous.  You will keep these banned and intend to expand the format?

I love this format and actually have 3 card lists in person.

No turn one wins? Yeah, let's nerf disruption.

Boycott, unless you agree to adjust the banned list as the format progresses.

4. donate them a platinum angel
5. play a mox lotus and braingeyser them for every card in their library. play an opalescence and donate them a glorious anthem and a blacker lotus, then play enchanted evening. play and activate a mindslaver and then donate them a fastbond and the mox lotus (returning one of the donates to your hand with eternal witness or whatever)
6. during their turn, play every permanent in their hand (playing lands with fastbond) then (as yourself) cast mirrorweave on the blacker lotus, so every permanent becomes a copy of it. proceed to tear up every card they control, and hopefully do it before they notice that they aren't bound by staying power's ability anymore and can concede

But in real life, we can't actually do that, so the card spends a good bit of time in locations that are neither where that player's library is nor where that player's hand is. And that's fine for real life. What I don't want is the disconnect to be explicitly codified. Along the lines of

I think it's pretty obvious the banned list will expand when he'll do the legacy one. Why ban Black Lotus in Standard?

This is true.

Edit: Here is a tentative banned list I put together for legacy.

No, the deck you posted isn't broken it all, it has no win condition.

However, Chancellor is extraordinarily good. How many decks have mana leftover after casting a spell? Very, very few. In a simple deck with say, a land creature and a removal spell, Chancellor by itself makes the game a draw. Any deck that relies on Black Lotus for mana (which I feel is a good card to have, since it adds a lot of diversity to the game), chancellor is a lockout. Chancellor severely limits the range of viable decks to decks that have two threats and a mana source, or decks that use storage lands. How many decks can 6-0 a Chancellor, Plains and Cenn's Tactition or Chancellor, Peat Bog/Lotus Bitterblossom? Only decks specifically designed to beat them, which makes the meta into a sort of rock paper scissors match.

Discard is only terrible if a deck can drop their entire hand turn 1, which not all decks can. Also note that consistently going 3-3 is still going to get you a lot of points. But discard by itself is not a problem (there are plenty of legal B discard spells), it is selective discard like Inquisition that can pick the card which is a greatest threat to the deck. Inquisition can hit about 90% of the nonland cards in 3CM. While it may be a bit less ridiculous than say, Thoughtseize, I'd rather not risk creating a stale rock-paper-scissors meta.

Also note that I am considering doing what the original 3CM did, which is regularly ban and unban cards in order to keep the format interesting, but probably not for a few rounds. Again, I want people to get the hang of things before shaking it up too much.

Just curious, but did you put the banned list in a spoiler block merely to conserve space?

Awesome game idea. I think this format will have a LOT of draws assuming we have perfect information. I couldn't think of a deck that just beat everything, at least in standard. If it were 4 cards, there might be a bit more ways to do things.

Anyways let me know what you think of my deck.

I agree with banning Chancellor in Standard 3-card, but I think once you progress to eternal formats it should be unbanned. The mana is so restrictive in this format a force spike probably would be broken, but once we get more options, it should be fine. Same with IoK, which gets worse as mana costs have the potential to rise with better mana sources.

Also, there's fairly standard banned lists for the format already if you search, which might be a better place to start changing from. Other than what I just mentioned, though, most choices don't seem too bad.

I used a fairly standard banned list. I just took the cards from the old 3CM thread and added a few cards that have been printed since then.

The better mana sources that you get in eternal formats are:
1. Black Lotus (which is countered by Chancellor)
2. Storage Lands (Fountain of Cho)
3. Lands that tap for 2 (eg Peat Bog, City of Traitors)

Unless you are going to deliberately play lands that tap for 2 in order to play spells that tap for 1 to specifically beat chancellor (which I believe represents an unhealthy format), the only thing that gets around them is storage lands, which don't really have very much use, aside from casting Form of the Dragon or doing other niche things. Chancellor would severely warp the format, to the point that every deck must answer the question "how do I deal with Chancellor?". Note that Daze was consistently banned in the old 3CM thread, and it is far, far worse than Chancellor is.

The only way you are going to cast something that costs more than 3 in 3CM is with Lotus, or with storage lands. IoK takes out Lotus, and again, Storage lands are very niche. IoK would warp the format as much as Thoughtseize does (and you can see the effects of thoughtseize being legal in one of the rounds in the old 3CM thread - where it was temporarily unbanned).

Edit: 17 decks so far. Mown's and zammm's are my favorite.

It was also a feature of old 3CB games to ban cards as they became problematic, not preemptively. In the end, you're still giving up a card for a "counterspell". It would be interesting to see how the format plays with Chancellor in it, and I think it should be left in for a round or two once we get to formats that can play around it more easily.

It would not be interesting at all, which is why I banned it. Every deck would be either Chancellor or anti-chancellor. And the anti-chancellor decks wouldn't even necessarily beat chancellor decks (since there is a lot you can do with the last 2 cards), they would just be able to get around them. It wouldn't be diverse at all, and chancellor would limit the amount of creative decks people can come up with, since it's such an amazing disruption spell. You don't have to run a round to know that Chancellor is problematic, it's quite obvious, given the constraints of 3cm.

I want the first round of eternal to be about exploring possibilities, not about trying to metagame against one deck/card to beat, which is what a chancellor-legal format would essentially be.

We'll see how it actually holds up. I went back and forth on the third card several times before finally deciding. I was actually surprised at the number of yomi layers that were possible just in Standard. If it turns out that my other pick would have done better, I'll probably kick myself.

Because frankly, being here depresses me these days.

Since the banned list may change in the future, I submitted a deck.

It's probably a million percent terrible.

I strongly feel control cards add diversity, rather than stifle it, and I hope my deck is an awesome example of that.

EDIT: Changed my deck for the benefit of all since it forced draws and that didn't seem nice.

EDIT#2: Agreed zammm.  Like most formats, it is much more open than one would guess.  I decided to just say screw yomi and play the best deck.  I really liked my other deck and I think it would beat a ton of lists, but if it can't beat the best deck, I'll get trounced if/when everyone else discovers it.  I thought about building to beat it, but I'd lose to a lot of random jank.

There's a game quite similar to this on the forum I tend to haunt. I'll submit a decklist.

As for the banned list, can I offer a suggestion? The way I've played, we use a "vanishing" format. To begin with, nothing but Un-cards, ante, and specials (like 1996 World Champion) are banned. At the end of each round, if a card (excluding basic land) is present in over 1/3 of the decks, it's added to the banlist. The upshot of this is that people are strongly incentivized to innovate every round; even if they find something really strong, they can't just fall back on it next round if they want the strategy to survive. If something is overly powerful, it's gone after only one round.

And for what it's worth, discard is a lot less powerful than you'd think, especially when you get to eternal formats.

there is nothing "epic" about a turn one victory. ever. or really any magic game, for that matter.
So this one time, I wanted to play a game of Magic with my friend, but he was in another country and neither of us had Magic Online. I hitchhiked my way to the coast, barely fending off hungry wildlife when I couldn't get a ride, nearly dying of thirst crossing deserts, and posoning myself half to death foraging for food. At one point, I was taken hostage by a group of kidnappers, only managing to escape after a week of careful planning thanks to careful application of a rusty spoon. Once I reached the coast, I had no money to buy a ticket across the ocean, so I built a boat using my own two hands, and spent months sailing across the waves, nearly losing my deck as I swam to the shore of a desert island in a storm after being capsized by an enormous wave. Nearly delusional after so long with no human contact (the notches I cut in the single tree to tell time had long since felled the thing) I was eventually rescued by a passing ship, where I was taken aboard as a crew member. We sailed around the world, seeing many exotic places and having great adventures, before we finally arrived at my friend's country. Once more I stumbled across a desolate landscape, riding on train or car when I could, and going on foot when I could not. Eventually, weary to the bone, seven years after I started my journey, I arrived at my friend's house, clutching my well-worn and weathered deck to my chest. We shuffled up our decks, I won the roll. Gleefully, I laid down my cards. Black Lotus. My friend looked quizzically at me, wondering what I was about to do. After so long, he no longer knew what deck I had brought with me to this game. Flash. A knowing smile appears on my friend's face as the knowledge slowly returns to him. Protean Hulk. My friend extends his hand, knowing the game is over before it even started. And finally, after so many trials, the sweet taste of victory is mine.

The way I rember it, the key card of the winning decklist was banned (for example, if Black Lotus, Black Lotus, Form of the Dragon won, Form would be banned), and the winner could choose one other card to ban and one card to unban.

Also, there were tweaks to the rules to diversify the format (for example, all lands produce 2x mana).

Form of the Dragon is always banned in 3CB games, because it is broken in this format.

He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.
