The Unseen Fist of the Underdark


Well, my first time for posting an idea for a possibly optimized toon. This idea came to me because of a friend, who couldn't decide wether to play
a roque or a monk and hybriding both classes somehow didn't go so well. After checking the optimizing guides in this forum along with the compendium this idea suddenly came to me.

Unfortunately during the creation of this build I faced some problems. The character builder somehow gets "buggy" and tends to lock up when you try to retrain and later "regain" the Novice Power feat. Also if you retrain it, for some reason the power which you retrained for the novice power does not unlock again in order to retrain it at higher levels. However you have to retrain and regain the Novice Power 2 times during this career, so you have to switch the feats and powers by simply unchoosing them instead of retraining them.

I haven't got the time yet to choose every useful item for this build, but so far I probably got the important ones.

So this ist your start. A drow monk (Centered Breath), equipped with the Darkfire racial. You could choose Cloud of Darkness, if you like a better defense, but the Darkfire might be favourable during your whole heroic career. Unarmored agility already boosts your survivability, too. The Five Storms is a must have at-will and the Steel Wind is also favourable, because it gives you a solid range 2 and still affects 4 squares, which is worse than 8, but better than only 1. Open the Gates of Battle might be exchanged with Drunken Monkey, but first is really useful since you surely are among the high initiative toons and you're very mobile. Many defenders are not so fast at early lvls, so Drunken Monkey is even more situational. At lvl 6 this might pay off pretty well. Masterful Spiral is "nuff said". It's effect has it's uses with some encounter or dailies, you add in the future.
Don't choose Thievery as a trained skill, because you are going to get this at level6. Better go with Acrobatics, Perception, Stealth and one of your personal choice.

Acquire the Eternal Mountain Power and a Rain of Hammers Ki Focus. Latter is for getting rid of those pesky minions, and it allows you
once per day to unleash another at-will after a successfull attack. Also increase your Ki Focus, because you might sometimes hurt bigger ones with it, too and later in your career you have to exchange it's magic property for an even more expensive one.

Always increase your Dexterity and Wisdom, coz you won't need anything else, but those two the most. Versatile Expertise? Crossbow? Yeah, I know, you don't have a crossbow...yet...

Now things get a bit more funky. You earn Thievery as a trained class skill and can apply Sneak Attack damage 1/encounter. Remember, when I said Open the Gates of Battle might pay off. Get against a full HP normal/elite/solo, throw your Darkfire at him, and hit him with a 3D10+2d6+modifiers attack. You might be on par with the ranger in your team in case of single target damage, at least for one round in an encounter and at this level. The Centered Defense utility will boost your survivability once per day in a tough fight.

By gaining the Novice Power feat, you trade the Strike the Avalanche Power for the roque's Low Slash lvl 3 encounter power. Since you are wielding a light blade, you meet the prerequisites and are accurate enough as well. This will make you a bid more formidable against single target's, especially with Open the Gates of Battle and Sneak Attack in Combination. You have enough area tools already, so you might gain more than you lose.

The Iron Dragon Defense is actually a no-brainer, as it saves you a lot of surges, your leader a lot of headaches and greatly increases your survivability. The Two-Fisted Shooter is rather unimportant till next level...

Well, the aqcuired paragon path adds some potential, utility and fluff to your build. The most obvious is the Arms of the Unseen Way path feat. Get yourself a ki hand crossbow to make even more use of this. 2 additional damage to all targets of your first flurry of blows every round is quite nice, since you are now hitting two adjacent targets and one within 10 squares. Time to retrain Swift Flight for Supreme Flurry. Get a jagged dagger to increase your chance for ranged basic attacks granted by the Two Fisted Shooter feat. The Drow Fight Style feat makes sure you don't provoke opportunity attacks by Two Fisted Shooter.

The character builder is buggy somehow, because it does not let you equip the dagger in the main hand and the hand crossbow in the other. Maybe because the builde puts the weapon with the higher damage dice into the main hand automatically. It should however not influence your gameplay or statistics. (edit: it works if both weapons have the same enhancement bonus.)

Since you already wield a magic dagger in you main hand, why not make some use out of it by choosing the Starblade Flurry feat? Now you damage two adjacent targets + a target within 5 squares + a target within 10 squares. And your first flurry per round does 2 additional damage to each target, so right now you hit each target for 8 damage and slide it. Your supreme flurry is also happy with that decision. Don't worry though, magic thrown weapons automatically return to their user afterwards.

WotC somehow messed up the character builder. While you have the Novice Power feat, you can not retrain the off traded power in order to get a higher level on and thus getting a new novice Power of a higher Level. If you retrain the feat and try to regain it at the next level it does not let you choose the power you want to trade for another. Well to avoid this we now simply remove the Novice Power to regain Strike the Avalanche, because we want to trade the latter for an encounter power of  higher lvl. Farewell, lovely Low Slash. You will be missed, but not forgotten and soon replaced by your brother.

Stance of the Still Sword is of about the same value as Centered Defense, but vice versa (instead of increasing your defenses by 2 you decrease your enemies' attack rolls). Now you have 2 nice defensive measures of that kind per day.
Defensive Advantage further increases your sturdiness and the usefulness of your Flurry of Blows.
We trade the Novice Power for some Improved Defenses.

The lvl24 Perfect Assassin feat Assassin's Advantage is exactly what we've been waiting for. As long as you have combat advantage, you WILL deal damage, even and especially on a miss. (Dexterity mod + 1) x the amount of your Sneak Attack damage dices. That's 45/14 damage right now, depending on how you interpretate the description. Since you got aggressive advantage you will deal this damage to any target at the first round of combat. Later on...well, remember centered flurry of blows? Yep, applying combat advantage should not be an issue, especially because you will trade your old Ki Focus for the new Fluid Blurred Strike Ki Focus. With it you can use your Flurry of Blows a second time, if you do a second attack during your turn.
How can you do that? Simple! By using an action point to make an extra attack, by using a multi attack power (remember Mithral Tornado), or by achieving a critical hit and performing a ranged basic attack with your hand crossbow.

However, since you'll have to use your Ki-Focus now, the Jagged property of your dagger is now unimportant. You will not crit that often maybe, but don't worry about it, because a second flurry of blows will easily achievable by you possibilities and will do much more damage than a single crossbow bolt. Further because of Assassin's Advantage you might want to blindfold your toon, because it will sometimes be better to miss than to hit.

Careful! The CB is bugged. If you retrain a proficiency for a new one, you somehow do not get access to this new item type at the market place. Instead you can only by the old weapon/implement. WotC should look into this one more time.

Edit: Since we now have a lot of CA, we can retrain Darkfire and gain Cloud of Darkness at this level.

At max level we retrain the Form Mastery into Martial Mastery. Further we also add the Whirlwind Sneak Attack into our feat list.
The tactic is simple. We've got CA against all targets during first round. Hopefully a group of targets is narrowly clustered at a certain place, we move their and strike with Steel Entrapment.

Note that through the Whirlwind Sneak Attack feat we apply the Sneak Attack damage to all target's, we've hit and we apply Assassin's Advantage to those we've missed (since they all grant CA). Now we apply our CFoB, hopefully to draw even more target's into our area of effect. Remember you can slide 2 squares and 2 target's at range.

If the result is not optimal, use your Supreme Flurry for another slide and to position yourself if neccessary. Now with the use of an action point your regain the use of Steel Entrapment, thanks to Slaying Action you can apply the Sneak Attack Damage to every target again (Whirlwind Sneak Attack) and thanks to your Blurred Strike Ki Focus you can apply your FoB a second time or third time, if you've already used Supreme Flurry after your first Steel Entrapment.

I guess that's a pretty cool combo. Would look like a whirlwind of fists, feet, daggers and crossbow bolts rampaging like a Tazmanian devil.

I might make a suggestion here. Drow fighting style is not going to be very useful. The hand crossbow is mostly there for you to be able to flurry with, and that's a non provoking attack.  If you got people in your grill, use your monk-ness

Also, i prefer cloud of darkness over darkfire. So much craziness you can do with an AOE effective-blind. 

I'm also not certain I would do low slash, because I feel like you are feat starved already, and deadly draw is nice a lot earlier than mid-paragon.

1. Thanks to the jagged dagger you will have some RBAs, especially at Paragon. Those however can provoke OAs, if you are in melee.
And I would not like having up to 8 guys pound on me, because I use my Two Fisted Shooter, which would lose some of it's value then.

2. The purpose of darkfire is mentioned above. It loses it's purpose at epic, true. Still, it's an effective tool early.
I've been tinkering with something similar for a while now, though as a revenant (drow) with Iron Soul instead. IMO stopping enemies from shifting or taking OA's is more generally useful than a slide, plus I prefer the additional toughness of CON secondary plus the revenant features. Dark Reaping also gives you a more strikery racial power.

Well, Iron Soul would not work with what I had in mind. You need the slide to position your enemies for your Steel Entrapment. Further preventing them from shifting or taking OA's is nice, but not working with my idea. The slide brings combat advantage and with that 50 damage per missed target. That's sometimes more than you would achieve with a successfull hit. If you use the property of the Ki Focus, you can't use the property of the weapon. However you still use the weapon for striking. Much like the Magic Bow/Magic Arrow issue.

And this build does move, but it's not focused on moving. It's focused on creating immense area attacks, applying CA to as many targets as possible and to never do no damage thanks to Assassin's Advantage.

But the idea of applying the attacks through the hand crossbow and using the Bracers of Archery is appealing. Thanks!
How are you getting 50 damage per missed target? Assassin's Advantage is just dex +1 per die of sneak attack, so 15 damage max (10 dex mod, 5 sneak attack dice).

[Edit] It's also questionable if Assassin's Advantage even works with MC rogue at all.

You don't NORMALLY deal any sneak attack damage, you just have the ability to do it once per encounter. It's not 100% clear either way, but be wary of DM's who will shut it down on that basis.

Actually that would be 14 the (9 dex mod, 5 sneak attack dice). Well, then I maybe misinterpretated the script.
I assumed it's Dexterity +1, which is multiplied by the amount of your SA dices as mentioned above.  Like (Dex +1) x SA Dices
Still, dealing damage on a miss is pretty tempting, even if it's less. And the retrained Expertise and Accurate Implement is somewhat compensated by CA. You can also skip Merciless Killer in Favour of Versatile Expertise.  Although I can't really believe it should be only about 14 damage. A roque is primarily a single-target damage dealer, much like the ranger.
If he misses with an attack, this sure makes him lose quite some damage (like the SA's). A lvl 24 ED feat only compensating about 10-15% of an actual hit does not sound very convincing. Especially when comparing this to other EDs. Not very convenient! Take the vice versa Saint lvl 30 feat for example. +25 to the smallest of heals, even the Astral Seal....
Then again, if this damage is added to your dailies, which cause half their damage on a miss, then it wouldn't be that bad after all, especially not for an area attacking monk.

Further a roque does not deal Sneak Attack damage normally either. He can do it once per round and only against target's, which he has CA against. Sure, that's more often than a hybrid or multiclass, but still not regular, if that's is what you mean. I assumed "normally" meant that you actually need to have the ability to do it, wether if it's once per round or once per encounter.


However, until this issue is solved ignore the epic part. If the multiclass really can`t make use out of the Perfect Assassin I already have an - even darker - alternative.

I am currently playing a human unseen hand in a Dark Sun campaign. I have found that ki focus expertise is all around better than versatile expertise. Primarily because of the low magic game and one magic focus is all I need.

You gave me some new ideas for epic If possible I would encourage folks to get deadly draw before 11th level, though it depends on the party make up.

The Rain of Hammers Ki Focus does not let you use FoB a second time. Until you get the Blurred Strike Ki Focus you can only dish out one FoB per turn. Once a day a second time via Supreme Flurry, but that's a power.

The Rain of Hammers grants you some extra damage-dealing, as long as you bring some targets (including minions) to 0 and offers an extra use of an at-will in a single round per day without the use of an action point. You do not actually need to use the Ki Focus itself to benefit from it's properties.
Now we dance! The Epic Destiny "Perfect Assassin" is your choice and it will prove it's value at level 24.
This will be the time, where you retrain a lot of old feats, especially those, which increase your accuracy.

The lvl24 Perfect Assassin feat Assassin's Advantage is exactly what we've been waiting for. As long as you have combat advantage, you WILL deal damage, even and especially on a miss. (Dexterity mod + 1) x the amount of your Sneak Attack damage dices. That's 45/14 damage right now, depending on how you interpretate the description. Since you got aggressive advantage you will deal this damage to any target at the first round of combat. Later on...well, remember centered flurry of blows? Yep, applying combat advantage should not be an issue, especially because you will trade your old Ki Focus for the new Fluid Blurred Strike Ki Focus. With it you can use your Flurry of Blows a second time, if you do a second attack during your turn.
How can you do that? Simple! By using an action point to make an extra attack, by using a multi attack power (remember Mithral Tornado), or by achieving a critical hit and performing a ranged basic attack with your hand crossbow.

However, since you'll have to use your Ki-Focus now, the Jagged property of your dagger is now unimportant. You will not crit that often maybe, but don't worry about it, because a second flurry of blows will easily achievable by you possibilities and will do much more damage than a single crossbow bolt. Further because of Assassin's Advantage you might want to blindfold your toon, because it will sometimes be better to miss than to hit.

Careful! The CB is bugged. If you retrain a proficiency for a new one, you somehow do not get access to this new item type at the market place. Instead you can only by the old weapon/implement. WotC should look into this one more time.

Edit: Since we now have a lot of CA, we can retrain Darkfire and gain Cloud of Darkness at this level.

At max level we retrain the Form Mastery into Martial Mastery. Further we also add the Whirlwind Sneak Attack into our feat list.
The tactic is simple. We've got CA against all targets during first round. Hopefully a group of targets is narrowly clustered at a certain place, we move their and strike with Steel Entrapment.

Note that through the Whirlwind Sneak Attack feat we apply the Sneak Attack damage to all target's, we've hit and we apply Assassin's Advantage to those we've missed (since they all grant CA). Now we apply our CFoB, hopefully to draw even more target's into our area of effect. Remember you can slide 2 squares and 2 target's at range.

If the result is not optimal, use your Supreme Flurry for another slide and to position yourself if neccessary. Now with the use of an action point your regain the use of Steel Entrapment, thanks to Slaying Action you can apply the Sneak Attack Damage to every target again (Whirlwind Sneak Attack) and thanks to your Blurred Strike Ki Focus you can apply your FoB a second time or third time, if you've already used Supreme Flurry after your first Steel Entrapment.

I guess that's a pretty cool combo. Would look like a whirlwind of fists, feet, daggers and crossbow bolts rampaging like a Tazmanian devil.
