Half Ogre build roleplay background

hello all
I play in a world of greyhawk campaign. My character is a half ogre starting in teh woodlands of Ratik. 
I was thinking of starting as Barbarian, then when we move to more civilised lands taking fighter to give him some disipline in combat. Plus half ogre in plate and tower shield sounds quite formidable.

There is some confusion over what LA the half ogre is. Could anyone clarify this please?
 
Also any advice on feats/weapons etc. I read that a spiked chain is good for half ogres but i am unsure of how this works. (I usually play a cleric so spend most of my time buffing or healing)

Spiked Chain is nice because a large reach weapon has its reach doubled. A chain threatens everything within your reach. If something moves within your reach you get an AOO. If anything moves within 20ft of you, you get an AOO. Free attacks are sweet.

Half-ogre LA depends on the source. I feel like the savage species one had racial hit die, but the most recent version of the race, from heroes of destinty is +2LA and no racial hit die.

Savage Species is 3.0, so I would recommend the one from Races of Destiny.  If you want to be able to use Large weapons without actually BEING large, you could also try the Half-Giant (XPH) or Goliath (Races of Stone).  They both have a +1 LA and the ability to wield Large weapons without penalty as Medium creatures.  Which, IIRC, would make the Large Spiked Chain a 15-ft. reach weapon.

A medium creature wielding a reach weapon for a large creature still only threatens to 10 feet.  A large creature wielding a reach weapon designed for a smaller creature gain no reach advantage.  Being a large creature with a 10' natural reach and wielding a spiked chain can be fearsome due to the amount of area they threatten.


I HATE to bring it up but I believe an issue of Dragon Magazine had a half-Ogre template that it only valued at +1 LA.  Given what it did I would NEVER allow it at that cost.  If RoD has it at +2 LA that is probbably the official 3.5 version.
I  would go with a charger build myself. if you are starting out barbarian go with lion totem barb, pikc up the reckless charge and shocktrooper feats and a two handed weapon, you will be dealing  some serious pain.
