05/19/2011 FtL: "Good Times With Weapons"

This thread is for discussion of this week's From the Lab article, which goes live Thursday morning on magicthegathering.com.
Just wanted to point out that when bringing back Flayer Husk with Auriok Survivors, you can feel free to equip it. The Living Weapon trigger will go on the stack after it's equipped, and the Germ will be created and equipped when it resolves. You won't kill the Germ.

Is there any reason why anyone would want to do that?
The best part of this was talking about metal!

My picks:

White- Power Metal: Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Dragonforce
Blue- Avante-garde/Prog:  Dream Theater , UnexpecT , Tool
Black- Black Metal: Dissection , Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir
Red- Heavyt Metal! Led Zeppelin , Iron Maiden , Motorhead
Green - Folk Metal: Ensiferum, Finntroll, Wintersun

I'd say white would like a good dose of symphonic and operatic metal, in addition to the power metal.  Bring on the Therion, Epica, and such.  Stuff that respects the old ways, but the civilized orchestra/choir side of it.  Maiden also strikes me as being a better fit here than with red.  But maybe they are a bit of a gold card, R/W, since you've got things like "Run to the Hills" and "Invaders", but then there's things like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" ;)

And speaking of Red...red would be Thrash and punk inspired metal.  Speed, frenzy from the thrash, chaos and rebeliousness of punk.  Something like Therapy?'s song "Knives" or a thrash tune like "Blitzkrieg," either Metallica's cover or the original.  Motorhead fits though, everything louder than everyone else, definitely red.  Moshing...so red.
How did Goblin Gaveleer miss out on being recruited for the Bludgeon Brawl deck? He made an effort to learn to trample (very difficult as a 1/1), and even brought his own pair of Golem-Skin Gauntlets! It feels cruel to deny him the position after all he's done to earn it.

I like the way you think. I listened to the Therapy? song, made me think of Anthrax, a bit of Megadeth from the thrash section.
Awesome combos! I love the idea of turning all lands into Equipment attached to my Vulshok Battlemaster! It's awesome enough that I'd love to do it even if I didn't have a Golem-Skin Gauntlets or a Strip Bare or a Turn to Slag or a Soul Nova or a Murderous Betrayal...
Question: Do germ tokens have creaturetypes?
And if it does, what is it?

Since Mana Echoes cares about the creaturetype I was wondering about this.

Otherwise a very nice article, do like the metal references Cool

"Do germ tokens have creaturetypes? And if so, what is it?"

Yes, they have the creature type "germ."

When a card that makes creature tokens names them like that, the name is also the creature type.
Psh... he talks about Bludgeon Brawl and equipping lands is as silly as he gets? I can top that.

Okay, for this one, we're going to need the following cards on the board:
Gideon Jura, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, Soul Sculptor, Intruder Alarm, Ashnod's Altar, and Mycosynth Lattice. You will want an Opalescence and a Flicker in hand, as well as some way in general to sacrifice said Opalescence.

Here's how it goes.

Animate Gideon
Use Soul Sculptor to turn him into an Enchantment (note that he loses the Planeswalker type when this happens)
Play Opalescence (Now Gideon is a 5/5 Enchantment Creature)
Using Kiki-Jiki and Intruder Alarm, generate an arbitrary number of Gideon tokens.
During this token creation mess, you'll want to use Soul Sculptor to turn an arbitrarily large number of your arbitrarily large number of tokens into enchantments. Use Ashnod's Altar and some more of those tokens to generate the mana to do this. (Don't forget... the Lattice lets you spend mana as though it were any color!)
Sacrifice Opalescence.
Note now that your Sculptor'd tokens are now Enchantment Artifact - Equipment.
Flicker the original Gideon
Animate him

Use your arbitrarily large amount of mana as generated by Ashnod's Altar above to equip your arbitrarily large number of Gideon Enchantment Equipment tokens to your animated Gideon Artifact Planeswalker Creature and swing for an arbitrarily large amount of damage (you remembered to Soul Sculptor your opponent's blockers, right?).

In case you got lost in the madness: I just equipped Gideon with infinite Gideons. Thanks, Bludgeon Brawl!

(P.S. I am a slight bit rusty on my more advanced rules knowledge... if for some reason this doesn't work, please don't bite my head off... instead, offer ideas on how to make it work!)

Small problem with the Gideon pile-up: Copy effects only copy the original object, not the other effects influencing said object. Using Kiki-Jiki on an animated Gideon only results in an unanimated planeswalking Gideon, who doesn't trigger the intruder alarm.

Solution: Add March of the Machines or Enchanted Evening to the combo. Alongside the Opalescence/Lattice this turns everything into a creature. Now your Gideon tokens will be creatures when they arrive, which is enough to make Intruder Alarm happy.

The only unfortunate side-effect is that all land (and other stuff with cmc 0) die once they get animated.

Can I get that modified Puresteel Paladin picture in wallpaper resolution?

For the first deck, you're already using Sword of the Meek, you can use tried and true partner Thopter Foundry as a backup win condition here too if you like.

Bludgeon Brawl=Win!!  You could also sub out the Golem-Skin Gauntlets for the ever-broken cranial plating for a win-moar power boost to  include all your artifact creatures.

I don't really have anything to say about the Survivor deck other than it looks interesting (to be fair it's surrounded by awesome so...)

Batterskull with baseball cap made me smile, but dear heavens that deck is ~$340! (not that I wouldn't spend that much on an awesome deck mind you....)

From Mark Rosewater's Tumblr: the0uroboros asked: How in the same set can we have a hexproof, unsacrificable(not a word) creature AND a land that makes it uncounterable. How does this lead to interactive play? I believe I’m able to play my creature and you have to deal with it is much more interactive than you counter my creature.

MaRo: One of the classic R&D stories happened during a Scars of Mirrodin draft. Erik Lauer was sitting to my right (meaning that he passed to me in the first and third packs). At the end of the draft, Erik was upset because I was in his colors (black-green). He said, "Didn't you see the signals? I went into black-green in pack one." I replied, "Didn't you see my signals? I started drafting infect six drafts ago."

Definitely agree with you on white and red. As for black metal, the only thing it has to do with black phyrexia's philosophy is the fact that they both have "black" in the name. Death metal would be a much better fit - bring on the gore!

Also not really feeling green as folk metal - green phyrexia is all about bigger and stronger, without thinking. Does that fit folk metal at all, or is it more to do with classic green's philosophy?
Yeah, I think he was talking about the colours in general, not necessarily the Phyrexian versions. Really, all of Phyrexia is death metal (black Phyrexia moreso), but black as a colour in Magic is actually a fairly good fit with black metal.

Actually, given the whole machine thing with Phyrexia, you might make that industrial death metal.

When I was trying to fit types of music to colours, I had green as folk music, so I think if we're going with metal specifically it makes sense that green would be folk metal.
blah blah metal lyrics

Folk metal is sort of the rural metal, in a way, so yeah, it does fit the classic green philosophy, as much as any metal does.

But a sub category of folk metal (well, the main chunk of it, really) is Viking metal, which tends to glorify fighting.  Well, that and drinking.  And sometimes both at once.  I'd say that fits the Phyrexian green pretty well.
The first deck in this article is terrible. C'mon, just go Thopter Foundry - Sword of the Meek. You don't need this other crap. Put your copies of Puresteel Paladin to good use elsewhere. :/

The Bludgeon Brawl deck is interesting, but not really my cup of tea.

The Auriok Survivors deck is awful. Please never try to put that card to good use; there are better options.

The Mana Echoes deck is really unique and interesting. I had not thought to use Batterskull's bounce ability in such a way. Right on 8)
The last deck, abusing mana echoes and germs is indeed very creative. However, getting seven other germs out wasn't really necessary. Since most of the mana gotten from them by the echoes is used in recasting the batterskull, making use of something like semblance anvil and/or etherium sculptor would make the deck equaly efficient and less focused on the token strategy. Not saying it would  be better, but would be a different approach that maybe is easier to assemble.

For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... [/deck] It equals:

Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Bludgeon Brawl is such a cool card (one of the few rare red enchantments I wasn't annoyed to open up in a pack) but I wasn't exactly sure how to make a useful deck of it, other than throwing it and some Spine of Ish Sahs together and "profitting," so I was glad to see a feasable construct! Fine fine work as usual.
Have you considered sticking Mirrorweave in the Germ deck? One sided Wrath of God usually.

That's not unfortunate! With the Ashnod's Altar and Mycosynth Lattice, you've got plenty of mana available. Just means your opponent won't have any mana to Condemn your Hydra Gideon.

Good to know on the "copies original object, not object as-is" bit. I feel like the rule used to be different many moons ago, but I could be mistaken.
