Magic Arcana / Card of the Day / Daily Decks for February, 2011

This thread is for discussion of magicthegathering.com's Magic Arcana, Card of the Day, and Daily Decks features for the month of February, 2011.
I'm kind of having a hard time wrapping my head around this "War League" system. Maybe someone can fill in the blanks?

So basically we pick a side (and our deck doesn't even have to be aligned that way) and then build a sealed deck (I'm assuming with just 6 booster packs like we would in a tournament) to play with? And then we're allowed to open up just one booster pack a week to add to it?

If that's so, is there any way to really regulate whether someone is following these rules with their deck? What happens when the chart is filled? Nothing? Are there any prizes or promo cards associated with this program? Or is it just a gimmicky way to create a new playing environment and get people to buy cards?
So my question is pretty straight forward. The ruling on Melira's Keepers is kinda screwy to me. If the critter deals it's damage in the form of -1/-1 counters then doesn't the Keepers ability give it a natural prevention sheild to the damage therefore it recives no damage. Just like bouncing a blocking critter the damage doesn't have anywhere to go so no deathtouch and no life gain. So might I ask whats the differance? because the abilities both say dealt damage but what damage is done? Damage dealt by a permanent with lifelink causes that permanent’s controller to gain that much life, in addition to behaving like normal damage.

Deathtouch is an ability that causes a creature to deal an exceptionally lethal form of damage to other creatures. A creature dealt any amount of damage by a creature with deathtouch is destroyed.
So how does this work?       Infect critter attacks, Keeper blocks then to the damage step infect deals it's damage to Keeper of three in the form of -1/-1 counters however when damage is assinged the counters do what dissapear? Any help on understading the mechanics at work here would be great and futher increase my knowlege of this game.

The damage is dealt, but has no effect on Melira's Keepers.  This is not the same as the damage being prevented.
I'm still baffled that they threw in a picture of Venser from back when he was apparently Prince of Space.

Also, Ken Nagle's poison deck looks like it was picked completely at random.
"This week's wallpaper features the last troll of all: Karl Kopinski's Distant Memories artwork from Mirrodin Besieged. Enjoy."

I don't think the artwork's that great but I wouldn't go as far as saying it was deliberately bad to annoy people.

Yeah, that looks like Karn, not Thrun.
If we were to get a wallpaper featuring Karn art, why not corrupted conscience? It's probably the best looking art in the set, and I'd love to have it was a wallpaper, even if it meant two weeks of Karn-based wallpapers. So... please?
OMG click HERE! OMG! How to autocard and use decklist format
--->
For autocarding, write [c][/c] with the name of the card inside it. [c]Island[/c] = Island For linking a card to Gatherer without writting the name of said card for readers, use the autocard brackets together with and equal sign and right the name of the real card. Then put the message you want inside the tags, like you would do with autocarding. Like this: [c=Curse of the Cabal]Captain Never-resolves[/c] = Captain Never-resolves For using the decklist format, follow this: [deck] 4* Terramorphic Expanse 4* Evolving Wilds ... Oh, it's a brilliant plan. You see, Bolas was travelling through shadowmoor, causing trouble, when he saw a Wickerbough Elder with its stylin' dead scarecrow hat. Now, Bolas being Bolas took the awesome hat and he put it on his head, but even with all his titanic powers of magic he couldn't make it fit. He grabbed some more scarecrows, but then a little kithkin girl asked if he was trying to build a toupee. "BY ALL THE POWERS IN THE MULTIVERSE!" he roared, "I WILL HAVE A HAT WORTHY OF MY GLORY." and so he went through his Dark Lore of Doom (tm) looking for something he could make into a hat that would look as stylish on him as a scarecrow does on a treefolk. He thought about the Phyrexians, but they were covered in goopy oil that would make his nonexistant hair greasy. He Tried out angels for a while but they didn't sit quite right. Then, he looked under "e" (because in the Elder Draconic alphabet, "e" for Eldrazi is right next to "h" for Hat) in his Dark Lore of Doom and saw depictions of the Eldrazi, and all their forms. "THIS SHALL BE MY HAT!" he declared, poking a picture of Emrakul, "AND WITH IT I WILL USHER IN A NEW AGE OF DARKNESS -- ER, I MEAN A NEW AGE OF FASHION!" And so Nicol Bolas masterminded the release of the Eldrazi.

Baron Sengir still on the reserved list?

Then I don't care.

Cool for Commander, though.
I'm interested in the line:

For some cards, it is their first time with a black border.

Wasn't the only white-bordered set with unique Legendary creatures Portal: Three Kingdoms?  Are we going to rock some Lu Bu or Guan Yu up in here?
I spy with my little eye Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir. Guess that's one card of fifteen accounted for.
Rules Nut Advisor
Why hello there Teferi.

This could be a cool source of shiny new EDH/Commander generals.  As always, withholding judgment until it's fully revealed, but it's certainly interesting.

"Go, then. There are other worlds than these." -- Stephen King, The Gunslinger

Please feel free to copy this message into your sig.

I'm more excited for Commander precons, but this is cool. Strangely, I like the original Teferi art more than this new one, but it's still good.

That black-border comment must refer to Three Kingdoms, I can't think of anything else it could be.
Please note: unless I'm trying to be sarcastic or humorous, most of my posts are very literal. Don't try to "read between the lines" because there is usually nothing there. I try not to imply anything when I write.
Is it just me or does the new Teferi art make him look like Lawrence Fishburne?

Also, the details they give are probably just copied/pasted from the other FTV announcements (with a few adjustments), which would explain the comment about the white borders.
Yuck, Teferi. One of the ultimate griefer cards. It'd be so much better if the two halves of his ability had been spread out, because an Orrery with Flash is awesome, but denying opponents the ability to do anything interactive at all is just... probably the single most un-fun ability printed in the past eight years.
Woo, shiny stuff! Fingers crossed for a new art Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker!

I'd love to see a reprint of Torsten Von Ursus, but I could see how they'd give him a miss...
Okay, there are 34 Legendary Creatures that have never been printed with a non-black border:
Cao Cao, Lord of Wei
Cao Ren, Wei Commander
Diaochan, Artful Beauty
Dong Zhou, the Tyrant
Frankie Peanuts
Guan Yu, Sainted Warrior
Hua Tuo, Honored Physician
Huang Zhong, Shu General
Johnny, Combo Player
Kongming, "Sleeping Dragon"
Lady Sun
Lady Zhurong, Warrior Queen
Liu Bei, Lord of Shu
Lu Bu, Master-at-Arms
Lu Meng, Wu General
Lu Wu, Wu Advisor
Lu Xun, Scholar General
Ma Chao, Western Warrior
Men Huo, Barbarian King
Pang Tong, "Young Phoenix"
Richard Garfield, Ph.D.
Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal
Sun Ce, Young Conqueror
Sun Quan, Lord of Wu
Timmy, Power Gamer
Xiahou Dun, The One-Eyed
Xun Yu, Wei Advisor
Yuan Sho, the Indecisive
Zhang Fei, Fierce Warrior
Zhang Hei, Wei General
Zhang Liao, Hero of Hefei
Zhao Zilong, Tiger General
Zhou Yu, Chief Commander
Zhuge Jin, Wu Strategist
Zuo Si, the Mocking Sage

Okay, that should be all of them. Based on the announcement, at least 2 of these will be in the new set. My guess is on Johnny & Timmy, with the preview card being Spike with the upcoming block being an Un block. (I might possibly be joking)

The other question is whether any Legendary non-creatures will be included. Based on the way the announcement is worded, I'd say no.
Immature College Student (Also a Rules Advisor)
Here's hoping for some cool three kingdom guys!
It says that for several it will be there first time in the CURRENT FRAME, not just black bordered, so it could be referring to a couple artifact legends, or anything else that's frame isn't exactly as it would be now.

EDIT: whoops, missed the very last part, but i guess it could be one of the portal legends and the preview, seeing as neither would have been printed before with a black border
I'm gonna be a vorthos dork, but...

Can someone clarify why teferi is holding two half-staffs, and not his one staff, broken in half, that he had on his original card?

(one end of the staff should be long and tapered, the other end is the signature "hook and eyes" - an then the last half should be broken - or maybe he had two half staffs the whole time? no? )

... what?

wasn't Ryo Ogura in the finals? I thought it was dragonstorm vs trisketron.
I hope this new From the Vault Legends set will also be available on MTGO like the last couple were.

I am just letting you guys @ wizards know that If the price shoots up to $100.00 like the last paper from the vault set I will not be buying one. I don't mind the price shooting up to $100.00 after the thing has been released. But last time the price shot up to $100.00 just to preorder the damn thing. THAT IS FRAUD! If the price is $35.00 retail then that is what the store should sell it for. The stores that did that which was like everybody who got them should have been held accountable.

I did buy one on mtgo however. I got it for $35.00 & there were no problems.

This is not true. It is called price gouging. You cannot do so with gasoline & neither can you with any other product. You can still sell it for less then suggested retail.

That is emphatically not what price gouging is.

I do wish Wizards had an online store. I guess they don't want to piss off their actual customers, which are the stores.
Price Gouging only exists within the context of disasters and panic, neither of which are likely to involve cardboard rectangles used for recreation.

Is this confirmation that Phyrexian Plaguelord will be a mythic in "Action"? If so, I'm underwhelmed.

Also, I was excited about this until I heard it was on MTGO.
Phyrexian Plaguelord is definitely not a mythic rare in Lights. (Lights was Scars of Mirrodin.)
Thanks for catching that, I really shouldn't post on the forums when I'm tired.

The new Phyrexian Rager would be more awesome if they kept the idea of the rager beating a "blue" creature. Only that this time, instead of a metathran, we'd see a vedalken getting killed.

Looks alright to me.

Is that Ish Sah in the background?  Looks kind of like the Vault of Whispers.

so, these legends what a great oppurtunity for the pictures from the old covers of duelist to be used, like selenia's on issue #20 mirri's on issue #17 and a near perfect one for maraxus on issue #18 not to mention greven in there somewhere.  and you know atleast if they aren't cards that are typically used they can still look pretty darn cool.

The current standings (where "current" means "when this was written") have Phyrexia slightly ahead:

Mirran vs Phyrexian: 8 wins
Mirran vs Mirran: 12 wins

Phyrexian vs Mirran: 28 wins
