This thread is for discussion of this week's Savor the Flavor, which goes live Wednesday on magicthegathering.com.
THAT WAS CRUEL

I am a great soft jelly thing. Smoothly rounded, with no mouth, with pulsing white holes filled by fog where my eyes used to be. Rubbery appendages that were once my arms; bulks rounding down into legless humps of soft slippery matter. I leave a moist trail when I move. Blotches of diseased, evil gray come and go on my surface, as though light is being beamed from within.

I have no mouth. And I must scream.

Yet it's still just a bad Control Magic.
Yet it's still just a bad Control Magic.

How is it a 'bad Control Magic'? Sure, it costs one more, but it effectively DOUBLES THE POWER OF WHAT YOU STEAL.
Now that I think about it, this is really good in Limited.

It's effectively "I win" if you steal a big flier or something along those lines.

How is it a 'bad Control Magic'? Sure, it costs one more, but it effectively DOUBLES THE POWER OF WHAT YOU STEAL.

Which is completly useful for blue infect decks that don't really exist.  It's either a switch in what life total the deck was chewing on, or merely a quicker mercy-killing after the board's been locked up.

Now if it was Bribery + Infect, that would be neat.

Okay, I was thinking it before, but it's official.

The Scars block is Final Crisis. With Karn as Dan Turpin.

That said: as disappointed as I am with the reveal of where the Karn art went, I must say, I love blue having infect and I love the flavor of a control aura that gives it even more. This card IS Phyrexia.

I'm also intrigued, though, by that Dan Scott preview art. I want to see what card it goes to.
Nice to see that the Fail Golem is still in as fine shape as ever.
Yet it's still just a bad Control Magic.

Who cares about the card? This was about that amazing painting and what may be one of the finest short stories I've ever seen posted on this site (at least since the Kamigawa vignettes).

…and in Limited, bad Control Magic is still pretty good.
Nice to see that the Fail Golem is still in as fine shape as ever.

Now, um, where the hell is Corrupted Squee?
I'm also intrigued, though, by that Dan Scott preview art. I want to see what card it goes to.

You really don't want to know.

If you thought this card was disappointing, hoo boy...

EDIT: Thought you meant Karl Kopinski.
NEWSFLASH: Comparing the power level of a card printed today to one last printed officially in Fourth Edition is insane troll logic.
I am simultaneously disappointed and relieved with this card. Disappointed that the art did not end up on KARN, FATHER OF MACHINES, but relieved by the fact that there's still hope for a colorless planeswalker card in the third set of Scars block. (Aside: before anyone tries arguing that Karn is not a planeswalker anymore, he lost his spark, no he had two sparks and still has one, blah blah blah, keep in mind I DON'T CARE, I just want to see a Karn planeswalker card. There's so much retconning going on here anyways that Wizards can decide which way they want to go on the issue.)

The card, ignoring the art, is actually pretty decent. U/B infect has been a thing, and this gives the blue side of that something to do aside from just the standard control stuff and proliferating. Taking someone's titan and giving it infect seems pretty good to me. At five mana, it's also surprisingly not overpriced. So I'll take it.
That was... disappointing.

I mean, a nice precursor to Beseiged, but it kinda sucks that that is the Karn card...
Great story (as good as Doug's awesome intro from Monday!). I'm not really disappointed by the card, because it means we'll get an epic Karn Father of Machines/Redeemed card in Action, where it belongs.

Agreed. That was awesome.

Thirded - excellent job
Karn is one of the most frustrating characters in magic. Power is thrust upon him and all he ever does is mope. You would think after thousands of years he might have learned something. Anything :/

It's very disappointing to see Phyrexia ret-conned into Mom's Old-Fashioned Robot Oil. Yawgmoth was everything and without him the Phyrexians lack interest. But if Karn destroyed Yawgmoth... after being created by Urza himself... I guess it was too tempting to place him in that role.

He's more like a "Loser-Uncle of Machines"

I was going to side with Phyrexia at the prerelease, but Karn represents weakness I just can't get behind.
The story was a nice read.
Karn doesn't work as the main antagonist, or better said, he is the "I'm forced to do evil but I don't want to be evil"-sort. How is that supposed to be threatening?

I love this description. Like the cows are sponges filled with milk. I can see it all Nick Parks claymation-style with the cow's eyes bugging out momentarily as a giant farmer squeezes it like a squeaky dog toy, and milk shoots out of it.

It's Venser, Shaper Savant

Blue seems to be getting a new control magic effect every block the way that white gets a new wipe spell every block.

I weep and mourn for Karn, the former embodiment of peace.

Oh, and Rosewater's list missed one vital characteristic of the Phyrexians: stupid

yes, just check the art of the original Venser and you'll see the helmet.

As for the article, it was awesome. I loved the story and the text was really well written. I didn't expect karn to still remain "good", though. I thought he'd be totally corrupted by now. Anyway, his orders weren't that bad. Sure, he made all the Phyrexians attack, but he created the plane, and there is no longer a single being there who was brought from other planes. So whatever. He's just playing with the toy he created.

Love the flavor of corrupted Karn. Completely saw it coming. he did have the oil in him after all. Also, Yawgmoth's spirit is what I assume is the voice Karn is hearing, so I assume that Yawgmoth will be back using Karn's body as a host.
Guess we've found pack 1, pick 1.
This is shaping up to be a very flavoriffic block... Glissa's betrayal of the Mirran's she fought to save years ago, Karn's tragic corruption, Tezzeret aparently showing up at some point looking almost as bat poo crazy as Sarkhan was...  I'll be curious to read the block novel when it comes out.

As for the preview card... cards like these are why I hate blue mages, especially in draft.  D-X

More like give the "glorious piece of art" to an actual Karn card instead of to some random control spell.  The art looked like we would have a Karn creature or planeswalker card, instead it turns out to be a control magic.
